Technology Use In A Virtual World To Build Organizational Culture And Identity, Tim Carroll
Technology Use In A Virtual World To Build Organizational Culture And Identity, Tim Carroll
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Organizations are embracing agile work environments for their employees more and more every day. This thesis explores the ability to create and maintain organizational culture in a virtual world through technology use. As more of these organizations move to a virtual workplace it is becoming more imperative to find ways to connect these virtual employees together as peers and to the organization as a whole. This communication audit is formed using the cultural approach to organizational theory, by Geertz and Pacanowsky, and uses surveys as well as interviews to assess how effectively organizational culture is expressed and maintained through the …

Tentang Kata Korupsi Yang Datang Silih Berganti, Muhammad Narsum
Antropologi Indonesia
This paper is intended to provide an overview of anthropological perspectives on corruption as political, social, and cultural phenomenon. The author attempted that anthropological concerns on corruption was driven by a number of epistemological reasons, institutionalized and embedded in the broader context of power relations both of globally and locally. The biggest challenge for anthropology, which deals with the complexity of corruption, lies in: how to explain or interpret such phenomenon without apprehensively will be going into ethical and moral pitfalls. On the one hand anthropologists should be described corruption as an inevitable part of wider power relations at the …
An Exploration Of Worship Practices At An African American Church Of Christ, Lamont Ali Francies
An Exploration Of Worship Practices At An African American Church Of Christ, Lamont Ali Francies
Doctoral Dissertations
The identity of the African American Churches of Christ is deeply rooted in the American struggle for racial equality. Without a formal governing body, the Churches of Christ have survived throughout the majority of the 20th century without making an official stance on racial relations. Many leaders in the religious movement have claimed racial immunity but have not addressed the evident division among ethnic lines. This study explored the extent of cultural influence that Caucasian Churches of Christ have on African American congregations.
This study observed these influences and how they shape religious culture and tradition in Black churches. The …
Toward A Redefinition Of Musical Learning In The Saxophone Studios Of Argentina, Mauricio Gabriel Aguero
Toward A Redefinition Of Musical Learning In The Saxophone Studios Of Argentina, Mauricio Gabriel Aguero
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The academic teaching of saxophone in Argentina is a recent activity compared with the teaching of others instruments. The curricula have been modeled in European schools, covering exclusively classical music and, therefore, setting aside the particularities Argentine society express through its own music. Composers have written several works for saxophone including local elements, such as folkloric rhythms and tango language; but the students in the academy are not able to learn them in a methodical manner. The aim of this research is to bring to the surface the gap between what is taught in the saxophone classrooms and what the …
Voices From The Coolest Corner Of Hell: A Content Analysis Of Slave Narratives In The Study Of Creolization In The Education Of 19th Century African American Slaves, Gina M. Rizzuto
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The general argument made by Southern historian, Ulrich Bonnell Phillips in 1918, is that the plantation functioned as a type of school for the slave. Similarly, in 1976, Anthony Gerald Albanese examined the plantation system as an institution that conditioned the behaviors of both slaves and slave owners. I maintain that the plantation system was not only an educative agency that conditioned behaviors, but also a conduit for the creolization process. The focus of this study is creolization in the education of African American slaves in the nineteenth century. This is a mixed methods content analysis of African American slave …
An Undergraduate Seminar On Irish Musical Culture In Ireland And The Irish Diaspora In America, Including The Influence Of Irish Music On Appalachian Folk Music Culture, Frieda Eakins
Masters Theses
The following project establishes a concise, yet multifaceted design for a seminar on Irish musical culture. While it was initially developed as a course for its author to teach in the undergraduate, on-ground classroom, this project provides a framework adaptable enough for use by other instructors and/or for additional music seminars. This project is unique in its two-fold purpose in that the design and resources are directed to assist the instructor with streamlining course curriculum preparation, while the course content specific to the project when utilized offers students in the undergraduate college classroom a better understanding of Irish musical culture …
Understanding The Culture Of Ahiska Turks In Wheaton, Illinois: A Case Study, Omer Avci
Understanding The Culture Of Ahiska Turks In Wheaton, Illinois: A Case Study, Omer Avci
The Qualitative Report
This study focuses on the cultural characteristics of Ahiska Turks in Wheaton, Illinois in the United States. By trying to understand the culture of the participants, I sought to shed light on how the Ahiska Turks managed to cope with the hardship they experienced and yet preserved their ethnic identities. In this multicase study, I interviewed six male Ahiska Turks. As a result of my analyses, eight themes emerged: family, religion (i.e., Islam), language (i.e., Turkish), communal life, endogamy, authoritarianism, oppression against the preservation of culture and identity, and education for upward mobility. The Ahiska Turks’ agrarian way of life, …

Looking At Me, Are You? Social Status And The Veil, Angelika Böck
Looking At Me, Are You? Social Status And The Veil, Angelika Böck
Journal of International Women's Studies
In this article I discuss the dialogical method which is used to study the idea of perception among individuals, especially to understand the question of perception toward the veil in Yemen in 2007. Furthermore I elaborate on my exploration of “portrayal” as an art form which lies at the basis of my approach. To be occupied with matters of the veil means to deal with questions of image and gaze. Therefore I also try to give a basic overview on this topic. The article ends with a short description of a corresponding experiment I carried out in Germany one year …
World Percussion Approaches In Collegiate Percussion Programs: A Mixed-Methods Study, Patrick Michael Hernly
World Percussion Approaches In Collegiate Percussion Programs: A Mixed-Methods Study, Patrick Michael Hernly
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As world percussion has grown in popularity in American colleges and universities, two main problems have emerged. The first problem is that no known source exists detailing how percussion instructors have incorporated world percussion into their collegiate teaching. A review of the literature has highlighted four main approaches to incorporating world percussion in collegiate percussion programs: applied study, group performance, travel experiences, and guest expert visits. The second problem is that systematic research on world percussion traditions has been carried out much more often by music education researchers, anthropologists, and ethnomusicologists than by percussionist-performers, so the relationship between theory and …
Contract And Dispossession, Deborah W. Post
Contract And Dispossession, Deborah W. Post
Scholarly Works
This Essay, part of a collection of essays on the same theme, argues that contract law has become an instrument of oppression and dispossession rather than liberation. Having offered a critique, the challenge then is to consider whether it is possible to restore the liberatory potential of contract. The symposium, Post-Marxism, Post-Racialism & Other Fables of the Dispossession, was an invitation to consider the contemporary relevance of Marxist theory.
There are two reference points in this cultural critique. One is the importance of social position in a jurisprudence that embraces objectivity; the uncritical and unreflective reliance on hegemonic social …

Coffee Culture In Dublin: A Brief History, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Coffee Culture In Dublin: A Brief History, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Articles
This paper discusses the history and development of coffee and coffee houses in Dublin from the 17th century, charting how coffee culture in Dublin appeared, evolved, and stagnated before re-emerging at the beginning of the 21st century, with a remarkable win in the World Barista Championships. The historical links between coffeehouses and media—ranging from print media to electronic and social media—are discussed. In this, the coffee house acts as an informal public gathering space, what urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg calls a “third place,” neither work nor home. These “third places” provide anchors for community life and facilitate and foster broader, …
They Were Framed! The Development And Validation Of Context-Specific Measures Of Individual Culture, Amber Schroeder
They Were Framed! The Development And Validation Of Context-Specific Measures Of Individual Culture, Amber Schroeder
All Dissertations
Early personality research often described behavior in terms of individual dispositions or stable behavioral tendencies (Allport, 1937; Cattell, 1957; Guilford, 1959), thus taking a context-independent view of personality. However, a recent review of thousands of empirical studies illustrated that even seemingly superficial changes to contextual variables can have a large impact on study results (Richard, Bond, & Stokes-Zoota, 2003). Yet, the use of non-contextualized measures of individual culture still remains the norm in cross-cultural research. Thus, utilizing a sample of more than 1,000 participants across two studies, work and nonwork measures of two cultural variables (i.e., individualism and collectivism) were …

This thesis opens by analyzing culture and animism and culminates with an ethnographic description of the Uriay tribe based on personal observation and information collected from missionaries who have lived among the Uriay people for over ten years. The purpose of this thesis is to provide research on this remote people group …
National Identity Through Prototypes And Metaphors: The Case Of "Romanianness", Razvan Sibii
National Identity Through Prototypes And Metaphors: The Case Of "Romanianness", Razvan Sibii
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
The last country God created was Romania. Realizing that he still had a lot of riches left over from the other countries, He let Romania have more natural treasures than anybody else. Seeing this, Saint Peter asked in surprise: "My Lord, why are you giving this country more riches than you've given to any other?" "Don't you worry," said the Lord, "Just wait 'till you see the people I will put in charge of those riches!..."
Whether Saint Peter was eventually satisfied with Romania's condition, we do not know. What this paper does investigate, however, is what God meant by …

Post-Conflict Cultural Revival And Social Restructuring In Northern Uganda, Erin Cagney
Post-Conflict Cultural Revival And Social Restructuring In Northern Uganda, Erin Cagney
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
In northern Uganda, cultural revival has become a major topic of concern after the decades-long civil conflict that displaced 1.9 million people. During that time, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) abducted an estimated 20,000 children and adults as mercenaries, porters, and sex slaves, and killed and mutilated thousands of others. The LRA wreaked general havoc on the entire northern population, contributing to the ensuing psychological and physical traumas that accompany such an experience. In the chaos and devastation of the protracted conflict, many cultural practices have fallen to the wayside, including dances, songs, folktales, marriage rites, social norms and rules, …

Divided, They Win? A Case Study Of The New Political Generation In Egypt Since 25th January 2011, Sanaa El-Banna
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the political culture of the new political generation in Egypt after 25th January 2011. It aims at examining the reasons behind generational conflicts on the new political landscape. It defines political generation as â a group of people who have been subject to common social and political (â ¦) influences and circumstances' that shape their political values, attitudes, and signify their sharing of an essential destiny' . Hence, generations are defined in terms of political culture, rather than age groups. The study examines six suggestive cases: The National Movement for Changeâ Kefayaâ , the 6th of April, …

A New Destination For “The Flying Bus”? The Implications Of Orlando-Rican Migration For Luis Rafael Sánchez’S “La Guagua Aérea”, Gabriel Ignacio Barreneche, Jane Lombardi, Héctor Ramos-Flores
Faculty Publications
Puerto Rican author Luis Rafael Sánchez’s “La guagua aérea” explores the duality, hybridity, and fluidity of US-Puerto Rican identity through the frequent travel of migrants between New York City (the traditional destination city for Puerto Rican migrants) and the island. In recent years, however, the “flying bus” has adopted a new number one destination: Central Florida. The Orlando metropolitan area has surpassed New York as the primary locus of Puerto Rican migration on the US mainland. Given that migrants on the “flying bus” have a new primary destination and now tend to remain settled in Central Florida versus returning to …
The Royal Presidio Of Monterey : A Socio-Cultural Analysis Based On Zooarchaeological Remains, Jennifer A. Lucido
The Royal Presidio Of Monterey : A Socio-Cultural Analysis Based On Zooarchaeological Remains, Jennifer A. Lucido
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The Royal Presidio of Monterey served as the focal institution of military power and government of Alta California from ca. 1770 to 1840 during the Spanish colonial missionization of the indigenous populations. Like the Franciscan missions, the Royal Presidio of Monterey was a multicultural settlement, home to Spanish soldiers, mestizo settlers, and Native Californians. During archaeological monitoring of the Royal Presidio of Monterrey, spanning from 2006 through 2008 which was conducted by Dr. Ruben Mendoza and his field crew of California State University, Monterey Bay students, significant Mission era architectural features were discovered and identified, in addition to the recovery …
Merit And Mobility: A Progressive View Of Class, Culture, And The Law, Lucille A. Jewel
Merit And Mobility: A Progressive View Of Class, Culture, And The Law, Lucille A. Jewel
Scholarly Works
Rising income inequality and financial trauma in the middle class beg the question of whether social mobility, long a part of America’s narrative identity, is truly available to Americans residing in the lower rungs of society. This paper addresses the connection between culture and social mobility, looking particularly at how culture impacts social outcomes in America’s meritocratic educational system. Analyzing culture and cultural capital from a progressive perspective, this paper concludes that culture operates subtly, helping some retain or improve their existing position but interfering with the mobility of others. The rhetoric of individual merit, however, obscures the role that …

Review Of Psychological Anthropology: A Reader On Self In Culture, Claudia Strauss
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Robert LeVine has not only conducted an important body of child development research and trained many students (of whom I was one). He has also written and edited several volumes that introduce students to psychological anthropology. His latest reader fills a real need: I am aware of no other collection of current work in psychological anthropology for undergraduates. Aside from a few quibbles and some annoying typesetting errors, Psychological Anthropology: A Reader on Self in Culture is a first-rate compilation that demonstrates the relevance and excitement of psychological anthropology.
