Utilization Of Research In Combating Violence In Alaska: An Ecological Perspective, Johnson W. N/A
Utilization Of Research In Combating Violence In Alaska: An Ecological Perspective, Johnson W. N/A
Conference papers
Research diffusion and use has increasingly become an interest of social scientists and policymakers. This interest on the part of policymakers is evidenced by the results of this study. In particular, high level administrators in 268 human service agencies of Alaska reported moderate to high use of statistics, evaluation studies and other social science research in making pol icy decisions about combating violence. Findings are also presented that point to specific facilitators and inhibitors of research use. The conclusions and policy implications highlight how the results of this research utilization study can direct the formulation of a research and development …

The Limits Of Law Enforcement, Hans Zeisel
The Limits Of Law Enforcement, Hans Zeisel
Vanderbilt Law Review
Society will not be able to solve the crime problem before it has solved the problems of the ghettos. Such an undertaking is a big task, on which society thus far has worked with little diligence.Even if efforts are increased beyond their present level, the task will take a long time. Nevertheless, the question must be ad-dressed, and the statistics point precisely to where the endeavor must begin. Crime typically starts early in life, therefore, radical efforts should be made to reach these crime-prone youths before their life style is fixed. One particular statistic illuminates the problem and suggests a …

How Serious Is Serious Crime?, Albert J. Reiss, Jr.
Vanderbilt Law Review
This Article examines the information systems that are available to the American public. Parts III and IV of the Article focus on the information and methods that American society depends upon to determine the amount and seriousness of"serious" crime. These parts of the Article criticize society's present modes of crime assessment by evaluating public perceptions of crime under several standards for determining the amount of harm that results from different criminal acts. In part V, the Article examines …

Women's Liberation: Is It Smashing The Hothouse?, Wendy Tarnoff
Honors Papers
Since this paper has concentrated on the cultural and societal influences on women's roles, and how these affect their criminal behavior, these variables rather than exclusively economic ones, will be presented now in relatively economic homogeneous contexts. The remaining discussion will, therefore, compare the patterns and trends of female criminal behavior in England-Wales and Japan with those in the United States. A final note will be made on some research done by Safilios-Rothschild in Greece concerning socio-cultural changes which have occurred in Greece, and how they have affected the commission of "honor crimes."

The January 1979 issue of the Alaska Justice Forum opens with a summary of Anchorage Superior Court Judge Victor D. Carlson's decision in the case of Sundberg v. State, in which he ruled AS 12.15.080, 'Means to Effect Arrest,' unconstitutional to the extent that it permits a peace officer to use deadly force to apprehend a suspect who is not a threat to anyone's life. Carlson declared Russel Sundberg's arrest for burglary unlawful due to use of excessive force and suppressed the evidence resulting from the arrest. The executive director of the Alaska Parole Board describes the importance of parole …

Review Of Crime In England, 1550-1800, Thomas A. Green
Reviews
Crime in England, 1550-1800, is the second collection of essays on the social history of crime and the criminal law in early modern England to appear in recent years. Together with the essays in Albion's Fatal Tree (1975),' these offerings advance our knowledge of the subject considerably. To be sure, as G. R. Elton cautions, there are methodological problems in a field so new, and Elton's "Introduction" will serve as an excellent starting point for readers concerned with such matters. We must nevertheless recognize the accomplishments of the new school of socio-legal historians. The essays in this volume deal with …

Articles
In the 65 years since the Supreme Court adopted the exclusionary rule, few critics have attacked it with as much vigor and on as many fronts as did Judge Malcolm Wilkey in his recent Judicature article, "The exclusionary rule: why suppress valid evidence?" (November 1978).

Vols 01-10 (1977-1994)
The June 1978 issue of the Alaska Justice Forum presents a subjective analysis of future criminal justice trends in Alaska; based on population shifts, increases in property ownership, and increased reporting, the author predicts that crime will rise in rural areas and decrease in urban areas in upcoming years. Preliminary results of a two-year evaluation by the Alaska Judicial Council of the effects of Alaska's plea bargaining ban are reported. A study prepared for the Governor's Commission on the Administration of Justice determined that the pretrial detention rate for juveniles in Fairbanks was eight times higher than nationally recommended standards. …

In 1913 Eugene Ehrlich spoke of the living law when he stated that "[a]t the present as well as at any other time, the center of gravity of legal development lies not in legislation, nor in juristic science, nor in judicial decision, but in society itself.' This article is premised on the belief that Ehrlich's perception is as valid today as it was then. If you want to know the law relating to public intoxication you cannot be content with the statutes and ordinances, in the court decisions nor even the administrative rules and regulations of those charged with enforcing …

The Complexity Of Crime, John E. Angell

Although fictional representations of crime depicted in TV shows, movies, and other popular media tend to be simplistic and unrealistic, these portrayals shape much of the American conventional wisdom about crime. This article contrasts fictional depictions of crime and criminals with how criminality actually is seen in society, what causes it, and how it can be addressed.
Central Problems Of American Criminal Justice, Francis A. Allen
Central Problems Of American Criminal Justice, Francis A. Allen
Michigan Law Review
At periodic intervals during the present century the American "crime problem" has aroused agitated public discussion. At these times both publicists and ordinary citizens are likely to assume that the disturbing conditions have suddenly arisen and are wholly unlike anything experienced before. In considering the crime problem, the beginning of wisdom may lie in the discovery that this is a problem with a history. Crime and its control did not suddenly become significant in the late 1960s, at the end of World War II, or even with the launching of the prohibition experiment at the conclusion of the first great …

Suppose that by some mysterious process the police in your town received each Monday a list of all the robberies and burglaries committed during the preceding week and the names of the persons who committed them. Suppose further that the list itself was admissible in evidence at trial and generally led to conviction. And suppose finally that persons considering committing offenses knew that the police had such a list and used it, relentlessly tracking down the miscreants named on it. Under such circumstances, one would probably expect that many potential offenders in the town with the magical list would resist …
