This study focused attention on these lay caregivers and the effectiveness of community resources, from their perspective. With assistance from Southern Nevada Alzheimer's Association staff, a survey was conducted. The results showed agencies rated as "satisfactory" in their efforts to provide information, with the Alzheimer's Association newsletter ranked as the primary source of information for caregivers. The Effect Of Biofeedback Training On Marital Communication And Physiological Arousal, Kent E. Nabers May 1998

The Effect Of Biofeedback Training On Marital Communication And Physiological Arousal, Kent E. Nabers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is well documented that the communication patterns of distressed couples are characterized by more negative and fewer positive behaviors. It has also been postulated that there is an association between physiological arousal and negative behaviors. According to this theory, as individuals become increasingly aroused, the number of negative behaviors also increases. This study explored the relationship between physiological arousal and marital communication. The three couples participating in the study received intensive biofeedback training with the hypothesis that an ability to control physiological arousal would result in improved marital communications. The Rapid Couples Interaction Scoring System was employed as a …

The Effect Of Automation On Helicopter Crew Communication: A Low-Fidelity Investigation, Margaret A. Maclsaac Apr 1998

The Effect Of Automation On Helicopter Crew Communication: A Low-Fidelity Investigation, Margaret A. Maclsaac

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Increasing levels of technology have changed the task of flying modern helicopter cockpits by allowing many crew functions to be performed automatically. This study attempted to understand the relation between automation and helicopter crew coordination. Twenty-eight helicopter pilots were assigned to two-person crews and asked to fly a simulated mission in either automated or manual conditions using a low-fidelity helicopter simulator. Communication was transcribed and coded into a nine-category content classification system by two trained raters. The inter-rater reliability was +.84. Results indicated that a higher frequency of total communications was demonstrated during manual flights.

"Dilbert": A Rhetorical Reflection Of Contemporary Organizational Communication, Beverly Ann Jedlinski Jan 1998

"Dilbert": A Rhetorical Reflection Of Contemporary Organizational Communication, Beverly Ann Jedlinski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The comic strip "Dilbert," created by Scott Adams, was analyzed to evaluate its accuracy and effectiveness in mirroring contemporary organizational communication. This historical case study utilized the methods proposed by Kathleen J. Turner (1977) to provide a rhetorical perspective of "Dilbert" and to demonstrate the reciprocal relationship between the comic and society. A three-pronged approach was applied to examine: (1) Precedents in comic strips and organizational communication; (2) Subject matter and dialogue; and (3) Character composition and artistic style. Conclusions indicate that Adams has astutely captured the dysfunctional nature of workplace communication in a unique form of discourse embraced by …

Sewing The Seeds Of Passion: A Study On Effectively Communicating Vision In A Volunteer Based Non Profit Organization, John R. Miller

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of modem nonprofit organization and the crucial role which leader hip and vision play in fueling these organizations.

Recent literature. written both specifically about nonprofit and about corporate culture in the general business world. suggests that there is a direct correlation between the strength of leadership al the executive and board levels, and the degree to which volunteers and paid staff will "buy-in" to the philosophy and work of the nonprofit . And because of the nature of the nonprofit business, that is, that it exists "for the public good" as opposed to …

The Social Construction Of Unique Caring Relationships: Metaphors And Descriptors Of Aids And Mutuality In Buddy Dyads, Renee Maday

Communication

This study explores how acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is socially constructed in buddy dyads as revealed by the written metaphors and descriptors supplied by cultural members through a survey instrument. A buddy dyad consists of a volunteer caregiver and a person with AIDS (PWA). The metaphors and descriptors that the buddies recounted provide an understanding of these special relationships and the social construction of AIDS in this uniquely affected population.

Analysis revealed that AIDS is most often constructed as integral to community and activism in the AIDS Culture. The buddy relationship is most often constructed as a friendship rather …
