Cultural Considerations In Patient Communication, April E. Birkmire
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Sunday, September 18, 2016: The Cultural Considerations in Patient Communication study is a prospective study that utilizes a tool containing phrases frequently used during health assessments. The health assessment tool was translated into Haitian Creole for use by Chamberlain College of Nursing students and volunteers in mobile clinics around Leogane, Haiti. It is essential for the health care team to show respect for cultural differences and to acknowledge values, beliefs, and language of the host country (Byrne, Collins, & Martelly, 2014). The health assessment tool incorporates the language of the host country while respecting cultural differences in …

Palliative Care: Improving Eligible Patient Identification To Encourage Early Intervention, Norma H. Clark
Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers
Palliative care (PC) encompasses a holistic way of caring for patients and families with chronic disease or life-limiting illness through optimal symptom management. Individuals in need of PC has reached 20 million annually world-wide. Many patients in need of this service never receive a consultation, or if they do, it comes late in the disease process. Some health care specialists see PC as incongruent with treatment, while others have a lack of understanding of what this service provides. Additionally, many providers have few or no resources to guide in the recognition of PC needs. This practice improvement project emphasized identification …

Clinical Instructor And Student Reports Of Affective Behavior Issues During A Clinical Experience, Bruce N. Elliott, Jon J. Rizzo
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Clinical Instructors (CIs) have optimal opportunity to support non-cognitive attributes while observing and assessing student interactions with staff and patients because of the time spent with their students. There is a dearth of literature related to how items in the professional practice section of the Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI) are truly addressed during a clinical affiliation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to record the occasions when lapses occur with respect to a student’s accountability, communication, or professional behavior, as well as assessing student and CI interpretations of how these instances were addressed, and subsequently corrected within …

Arranging And Communication Techniques For The Studio Music Producer: A Curriculum, Elizabeth A. Rajcok
Arranging And Communication Techniques For The Studio Music Producer: A Curriculum, Elizabeth A. Rajcok
Masters Theses
College music students who desire to pursue careers in the commercial music industry would benefit from learning all aspects of music production, including the techniques of rhythm section instruments and the intricacies of various genres. However, courses that provide students with hands-on training in communicating and arranging within a recording studio are lacking in residential collegiate contemporary and commercial music degrees. Students lacking in multi- instrument knowledge and immersion in contemporary genres may find their insufficiency is an impediment when functioning in their desired profession as a music producer post-college. The curriculum project detailed in this study is designed to …

BACKGROUND: Individuals on the autism spectrum commonly have differences from non-autistic people in expressing their emotions using communicative behaviors, such as facial expressions. However, it is not yet clear if this reduced expressivity stems from reduced physiological reactivity in emotional contexts or if individuals react internally, but do not show these reactions externally to others. We hypothesized that autism is characterized by a discordance between in-the-moment internal psychophysiological arousal and external communicative expressions of emotion.
METHODS: Forty-one children on the autism spectrum and 39 non-autistic, typically developing (TD) children of two age groups (2-4 and 8-12 years) participated in a …
Leadership Strategies And Behaviors That Support Career Advancement For Teleworkers, Glory A. Sanders
Leadership Strategies And Behaviors That Support Career Advancement For Teleworkers, Glory A. Sanders
Journal of Fundamental & Applied Business Research
Research in telework has primarily focused on the study of teleworkers or the comparison between teleworkers and non-teleworkers. For this reason, leader behavior in the telework context has been a relatively neglected area of study. This study emphasized the need for more career advancement within the telework arena, contributing to higher turnover intentions and a reluctance to participate in telework programs. This research explored explicitly leader behaviors and strategies that support career advancement for teleworkers within Denver, Colorado. The findings indicate that leaders are more intentional about communication with teleworkers than non-teleworkers. Physical distance creates many challenges, which effective and …

Using Mock On-Call Patient Encounters To Assess Ophthalmology Resident Peer Communication And Clinical Readiness: A Pilot Study, Shravika L. Chennupati, Jonathan Barnett, Jennifer L. Lindsey, Amy S. Chomsky, John B. Bond, Edward F. Cherney, Janice C. Law
Journal of Academic Ophthalmology
Introduction
Communication between co-residents is a crucial component of success among ophthalmology resident physicians who are part of the same on-call team. However, opportunities to assess and hone communication skills during residency training are limited. We developed a novel pilot workshop to improve and assess communication and collaboration between ophthalmology trainees.
Methods
Two standardized patient scenarios were developed in which residents collaborated in a mock on-call team. Encounters took place in a simulated clinic space. Team members consisted of a PGY-2 resident, PGY-3 resident, and a faculty evaluator. A critical action checklist was used to assess learners during the encounters. …

The New Professional: Tips For Dealing With Unpleasant Patients, Amrita Patel Dds
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This article emphasizes the importance of managing unpleasant patients in dentistry through empathy, effective communication, and tailored care. Dentists should understand that patient anxiety often stems from fear or past trauma. Building trust through clear explanations, personalized comfort measures, and pain management is crucial. Techniques like guided imagery and gradual exposure can help reduce anxiety. Consistency in care and follow-up support strengthens patient relationships, making even the most challenging patients more comfortable and cooperative.

Children Sustain Cooperation In A Threshold Public-Goods Game Even When Seeing Others’ Outcomes, Patricia Kanngiesser, Jahnavi Sunderarajan, Sebastian Hafenbrädl, Jan K. Woike
School of Psychology
Many societal challenges are threshold dilemmas requiring people to cooperate to reach a threshold before group benefits can be reaped. Yet receiving feedback about others’ outcomes relative to one’s own (relative feedback) can undermine cooperation by focusing group members’ attention on outperforming each other. We investigated the impact of relative feedback compared to individual feedback (only seeing one’s own outcome) on cooperation in children from Germany and India (6- to 10-year-olds, N = 240). Using a threshold public-goods game with real water as a resource, we show that, although feedback had an effect, most groups sustained cooperation at high levels …
Placebos, Rhetoric, And The Power Of Expectation, Jennifer M. Reeher
Placebos, Rhetoric, And The Power Of Expectation, Jennifer M. Reeher
Theses and Dissertations
Placebos, Rhetoric, and the Power of Expectation examines the relationship between persuasion and health to determine what interventions rhetoric could make in the interdisciplinary field of placebo studies. This exploration of the relationship between rhetoric and placebo responses relies on non-anthropocentric definitions and theories of rhetoric as well as a multifaceted archive that includes patient narratives, clinical intake forms, and peer-reviewed scientific studies of condition-specific placebo responses. The impact of this investigation spans the practical and the theoretical. First, rhetorical study highlights the importance of a patient’s perception of care in patient recovery. To this end, rhetoric offers audience-focused methods …
