Implementation Of A Standardized, Multimodal Safe Sleep Education Policy For Newborns, Emma C. Cook, Anisa E. Toliver

Scholars Week

This evidence-based practice project proposes updating a regional hospital’s infant sleep policy to include standardized, multimodal safe sleep education. The goal is to improve adherence to safe sleep practices and reduce the risk of sleep-related infant death using interventions such as multiple forms of standardized parent education, consistent staff modeling of safe sleep practices, environmental modifications, and routine bassinet audits. This project uses Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory to strengthen parental understanding and promote safe sleep environments during hospitalization and at home.

Developing An Emergency Department-Specific C. Difficile Infection-Prevention Policy, Katelyn M. Wuest, Chris Bray

Scholars Week

Our evidence-based practice project focuses on the need for an Emergency Department (ED)- specific Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) infection-prevention policy that adapts the existing facility-wide guidelines to the unique workflow and environment of the ED. Using infection-prevention literature and environmental disinfection recommendations as a foundation, the project proposes the need for clearer guidance regarding applying precautions, managing shared equipment, and maintaining environmental cleanliness. Implementation and evaluation using a Plan-Do-Study-Act approach can help assess staff adherence and identify opportunities to improve consistency in infection-prevention practices.

Framing Ground-Up Urban Transformation: The Need For Neighbourhood-Scale Statutory Planning Frameworks, Anjali Karol Mohan, Justin Andrews Jeganathan Oct 2026

Framing Ground-Up Urban Transformation: The Need For Neighbourhood-Scale Statutory Planning Frameworks, Anjali Karol Mohan, Justin Andrews Jeganathan

Journal of Law and Public Policy

Urbanisation in the cities of the Global South is steered through high-level urban development plans and sector-specific policies, often premised on macro-scale processes and economic restructuring. Given the centralized and standardized approach, these plans and policies remain disconnected from the city-making processes that unfold incrementally at the sub-city or the neighbourhood scale through the everyday decisions of multiple stakeholders. The neighbourhood scale is significant as it allows for negotiation and participation, thus providing opportunities to exercise social, spatial, and economic agency. Yet this scale is often overlooked—at times completely missed—in macro plans and policies. Important questions thus remain on how …

Research Assessment As Aninstitutional Lever For Sustainabledevelopment: Aligning Researchincentives With Societal Goals, Seán Lacey Oct 2026

Research Assessment As Aninstitutional Lever For Sustainabledevelopment: Aligning Researchincentives With Societal Goals, Seán Lacey

Publications

Research assessment is often viewed as a technical process for evaluating research performance. However, assessment systems also function as institutional mechanisms that shape incentives, influence researcher behaviour and help determine which activities are recognized and rewarded within the research ecosystem. This opinion piece argues that research assessment should be understood as an institutional lever for sustainable development. While quantitative indicators such as publications, citations and grant income have facilitated large‑scale evaluation, an over‑reliance on such measures can narrow research agendas and under‑recognize activities that contribute to openness, collaboration, integrity and societal impact. Drawing on contemporary discussions surrounding research assessment reform, …

Paradoxes Of Customary Land Formalization: A Comparative Study Of Papua New Guinea And Indonesia From A Political Anthropology Perspective, Adi Prasetijo Oct 2026

Paradoxes Of Customary Land Formalization: A Comparative Study Of Papua New Guinea And Indonesia From A Political Anthropology Perspective, Adi Prasetijo

Antropologi Indonesia

This article studies the dynamics of customary land ownership in Papua New Guinea (PNG), where approximately 97 percent of land is collectively held by clans. Drawing on insights from political anthropology—particularly normative pluralism (Griffiths, 1986; von Benda-Beckmann, 2006), Polanyi's double movement (Filer, 2014), along with cosmological perspectives on land and identity (Weiner & Glaskin, 2007; Ingold, 2021), it analyzes how government efforts to formalize customary land through the Land Act 1996 and the Incorporated Land Groups (ILG) Act 2009 generate three principal paradoxes: (1) protection versus exclusion, (2) recognition versus commodification, and (3) negotiation versus rigidity. The study blends an …

Enhanced Minority Class For Oil Spill Detection By Integrating Weighted Data Class Into Mask R-Cnn Architecture (Wmask-Rcnn), Abubakar Salihu Abba, Noorfa Haszlinna Binti Mustaffa, Siti Zaiton Mohd Hashim, Musa Adamu Wakili, Nor Haizan Mohamed Radzi, Zuriahati Mohd Yunos

Baghdad Science Journal

Efficient detection and precise classification of oil spills in marine environments remain challenging, mainly due to the oil spill class imbalance within Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) datasets, which reduces deep learning model performance and often leads to false negatives. Moreover, traditional deep learning models have limited generalization efficiency, making their performance unreliable when tested on new oil spill patterns. Existing models, such as two-stage Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks (R-CNN), are inefficient in detecting small oil spill patterns because of class imbalance. In response, this study introduces WMask-RCNN, an improved oil spill detection framework based on satellite imagery that focuses on …

Data-Driven Discovery Of Canonical Models In Undergraduate Differential Equations Education, Devon L. Garls, Raina Majumder, Scott A. Strong

CODEE Journal

Roughly a decade ago, Brunton, Proctor, and Kutz built upon the re-

sults of classical control theory, compressed sensing, and symbolic regression

to create a method for Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy),

allowing one to infer a dynamical system from time series and bring mathe-

matical dynamics into the modern era of large data. This paper is designed for

a reader concurrently enrolled in a first course in ordinary differential equa-

tions and begins with a technical overview of least-squares regression and

finite-difference approximations to derivatives, which is enough to perform

an example hand-calculation on three data points. The …

Ai And Legal Malpractice: Are We Due For A Reckoning?, John Browning Oct 2026

Ai And Legal Malpractice: Are We Due For A Reckoning?, John Browning

Texas A&M Law Review

As the rate of AI adoption by lawyers steadily climbs, unfortunately so has the number of incidents of AI misuse by attorneys. For some time, courts satisfied themselves with giving offending lawyers warnings, ordering them to take additional CLE, and/or administering relatively nominal monetary sanctions. Lately, however, frustrated judges throughout the country have upped the ante by not only assessing increasingly higher sanctions but also imposing case dismissals and suspensions or disciplinary referrals for the lawyers involved. As this article discusses, with their negligence exposed to the public eye and the harsh gaze of their clients, lawyers who misuse AI …

Rethinking Remittitur In Texas Law, David M. Gunn Oct 2026

Rethinking Remittitur In Texas Law, David M. Gunn

Texas A&M Law Review

The Texas appellate rules say next to nothing about remittitur. About as far as they go is to state in Rule 46.3 that a court of appeals “may suggest a remittitur.” The text and history of this provision might raise more questions than they answer. Nineteenth-century courts across the country began resorting to remittitur, but they spent little time explaining remittitur’s origins. Texas courts followed a similar path, until an 1893 statute expressly told the courts what to do in instances of excessive damages: they had a “duty” to “indicate” to the damage claimant the amount of the excess, with …

Konstruksi Identitas Nasional Melalui Bahasa Visual Animasi Dalam Trailer Film Merah Putih: One For All, Deva Alviana, A. Syaifuddin Rohman

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

This study aims to analyze the application of the 12 principles of animation, the construction of national identity, and audience interpretations of the animated film trailer Merah Putih: One for All. A qualitative approach was employed through scene-by-scene audiovisual analysis of the 2-minute, 2-second trailer published on the YouTube channel @perfikitv and reception analysis of 15 comments purposively selected from X. The analytical framework combines Thomas and Johnston’s 12 principles of animation with Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding theory. The evaluation indicates that one principle was applied effectively, two were partially applied, four were inadequately applied, and five were not adequately …

The results revealed that the optimized lattice parameters and energy bandgap are in well agreement with the published results. Besides, the insertion of Ru atoms at Nb site of LiNbO3 leads to …

Risk-Aware Scheduling In Distributed Systems Using Reinforcement Learning And Mined Traffic Patterns, Donia Fadil Chalob, Jaber Karimpour, Zolfaghar Salmanian Oct 2026

Risk-Aware Scheduling In Distributed Systems Using Reinforcement Learning And Mined Traffic Patterns, Donia Fadil Chalob, Jaber Karimpour, Zolfaghar Salmanian

Baghdad Science Journal

Large-scale networked systems now face security threats that shift faster than fixed schedulers can follow. Conventional scheduling optimizes throughput and latency, and treats security as an afterthought. This paper takes a different approach: a reinforcement learning framework for risk-aware scheduling, with its risk signal drawn from multi-modal analysis of UNSW-NB15 traffic – statistical profiling, DBSCAN and Gaussian mixture clustering, and sequential pattern mining. The pipeline runs in two phases. First, preprocessing and feature engineering turn raw network data into usable scheduling features. Second, DQN and PPO agents learn scheduling policies under a dynamic, risk-weighted reward. The balance between security and …

“Zoned Communities”: Signage And The Culture Of Property, Noah M. Kazis Oct 2026

“Zoned Communities”: Signage And The Culture Of Property, Noah M. Kazis

Duke Law Journal Online

At the entrance to many small towns and counties can be found signs proclaiming "Zoning Enforced" or "Zoned Community, Permits Required." Such signage purports to be providing notice of local land use law. In the language used on these signs and in their visual cues, they appear to be official, instrumental communications, like a traffic or "no trespassing" sign. Moreover, when asked, that is what the local officials and residents who advocate for erecting such signs understand them to be.

This Essay, however, argues that such signage primarily functions in a subtler, cultural register. These signs' primary purpose is to …

Who Holds The Power: A Discourse Analysis Surrounding Human Trafficking, Maria Bernardo Oct 2026

Who Holds The Power: A Discourse Analysis Surrounding Human Trafficking, Maria Bernardo

The Compass

Narratives surrounding human trafficking in the United States have shaped public understanding through government, media, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Human trafficking is a complex global issue involving exploitation using force, fraud, or coercion for numerous purposes. Through the examination of intertextual relationships among government reports, victim narratives, and media coverage, this project aims to look at dominant narratives about human trafficking while comparing them to policy. While policy criteria describes indicators, literature argues how human trafficking is not clearly defined. A common issue in literature is the definition of a trafficked person. There is often a debate between what scholars …

Patriotism From The Past To The Present: Inclusive And Exclusive Pratriotism As Powerful Forces In American History And Trump’S Presidency, Nicole Burgon Oct 2026

Patriotism From The Past To The Present: Inclusive And Exclusive Pratriotism As Powerful Forces In American History And Trump’S Presidency, Nicole Burgon

The Compass

What is patriotism? Is it standing for the “Star-Spangled Banner” before every sports game? Is it displaying the American flag in front of a house? While Americans often associate patriotism with these symbolic gestures, American patriotism is an attitude that has been present since the start of our nation’s history. Patriotism can be defined as a feeling of devotion, attachment, commitment, or support for one’s country. It is, however, more than a single dictionary definition. In 1946, Merle Curti’s The Roots of American Loyalty traced American patriotism throughout history as “a pattern of emotions and ideas.” In a 1999 article …
