The Future Of Nuclear Security: A Medical Physicist’S Perspective, Katharine E. Thomson

International Journal of Nuclear Security

Planning for the future of nuclear security is a vital and complex task, requiring cooperation and contribution from many disciplines and industries. This diversity of expertise should include the medical sector, which faces many of the same challenges as the nuclear industry: controlling access to dangerous material, creating a strong security culture, cooperating with the wider world and engaging the public.

Medical physicists, of which the author is one, oversee all aspects of small-scale radiation use. This paper discusses three key areas increasingly important to both medical and nuclear uses of radioactive materials: public engagement, prevention of nuclear and radiological …

A Palimpsest Of Diné Voices, Frances Vitali, Brian C. O'Connor Dec 2017

A Palimpsest Of Diné Voices, Frances Vitali, Brian C. O'Connor

Proceedings from the Document Academy

We use the idea of a palimpsest to probe and illuminate Hayse's model of communication as a dance - not simply the erasure of a single manuscript but the scraping away of the communication system of an entire people.

Among Navajo (Dine’), oral tradition and oral language still operates within mediated print and digital technologies as a complementarity. There is still a commitment to honoring whose voice is telling the stories in American Indian literature, for colonialist attitudes may still be coded with unchallenged stereotypes, cultural inaccuracies for readers.

Modeling the intersection of Diné culture and Anglo culture – both …

Social Support Strategies In Online Forums Among Adult Offspring Of Parents With Harmful Alcohol Use, Marie Haverfield, John Leustek, Christine Timko

Faculty Publications

The authors categorized communication strategies employed to exchange social support (type and person centeredness) in three online forums about parents with harmful drinking. Data included discussion postreplies over 2 months; N = 1,644 units of analysis. Support type categories were identification, emotional, informational, network, and esteem. For person centeredness, most messages were moderate (expressed sympathy, provided distraction), followed by high (helped with feelings), and then low (minimized feelings). Adult offspring of parents with harmful drinking predominantly communicate self-interested forms of support in online forums. Based on principles of supportive communication, esteem support and high person centeredness may enhance social support …

Compassion And Communication Experiences Of Fourth-Year Veterinarians-In-Training, Chelsey Leigh Hess-Holden

Theses and Dissertations

Veterinary medicine is an intense profession that begins with rigorous and demanding veterinary training. Within veterinary training, technical competencies generally receive more attention and emphasis than non-technical competencies, leaving many veterinarians at increased risk for compassion fatigue and other forms of mental illness. Two non-technical competencies that need further empirical investigation are communication and the influence of compassion on veterinarians. Communication is central to veterinary success; communication style was measured using the Communication Styles Inventory. Compassion has been recognized as having both positive effects (satisfaction) and negative effects (fatigue); compassion experiences were measured using a version of the Professional Quality …

Esl And Ell Program Effectiveness: Providing Academic Success For Students, Maria Gonzalez-Herrera Dec 2017

Esl And Ell Program Effectiveness: Providing Academic Success For Students, Maria Gonzalez-Herrera

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of English as a Second Language and English Language Learners—ESL and ELL respectively—programs in helping students whose native language is not English achieve academic success in school. The general issue with these programs is that more often than not, students whose native language is not English are placed in separate classrooms from their peers, which leads to an academic disadvantage because the focus is on language acquisition. This does not provide other forms of long-term knowledge that will help the students. In other words, ESL and ELL programs are efficient …

Audialtext: Improving Communication Accessibility For The Deaf Through Automatic Voice-Recognition And Wearable Smart-Technology., Ernest Roszkowski

Theses

Whether you are ordering food at a restaurant, asking for directions, or receiving a phone call from a family member, it is apparent that human communication is an important part of everyday life. Those who are deaf have limited communication accessibility compared to their hearing counterparts, and by default, obtain less public information and face more obstacles during social interactions.

This thesis project will attempt to bridge this communication gap through the exploration of human interactions with user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design. The goal is to design and develop an application concept for wearable smart-technology that will …

Attitudes And Perceived Legitimacy Of Police: Crises, Responses, And How Race Influences Perceptions, Brigitte Bonaci

Theses and Dissertations

Public relations is a strategic field because an organization may need to structure a message with the intent of persuading the public and making it respond to a crisis and a message in a certain way. This study will help introduce the concept of a lingering crisis that is hardly present in research and could be put under the public relations umbrella. Using a survey of communications students, this study will compare the public attitudes and perceptions of perceived legitimacy of a police department after it experiences one of three crisis types, one of which being a lingering crisis. Attitudes …

Patient And Provider Experiences With Relationship, Information, And Management Continuity, Jeanette Jackson, Gail Mackean, Tim Cooke, Markus Lahtinen

Patient Experience Journal

From 2003 to 2014, the Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA) monitored patient experiences with healthcare services through a biennial Satisfaction and Experience with Healthcare Services (SEHCS) survey. The findings consistently showed a direct link between coordination of care, an aspect of continuity of care, and healthcare outcomes. Specifically, it showed that better coordination is linked to positive outcomes; the reverse is also true. Given the critical role continuity of care plays in the healthcare system, the HQCA conducted in-depth interviews, interactive feedback sessions and focus groups with patients and providers to explore factors that influence both seamless and fragmented …

Weather Communication On Twitter: Identifying Popular Content And Optimal Warning Format Via Case Studies And A Survey Analysis, Joshua D. Eachus Nov 2017

Weather Communication On Twitter: Identifying Popular Content And Optimal Warning Format Via Case Studies And A Survey Analysis, Joshua D. Eachus

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The use of Twitter as a channel for weather information inspires a deeper analysis of key information nodes during episodes of high impact weather, especially local meteorologists. To optimize communication on the channel, it is important to understand what kinds of messages produce exposure and attention among users—which translates to knowledge that could improve the reach of a warning. Literature identifies two key models that well describe the cognitive processing of tweets and warnings. The Protective Action Decision Model (PADM) describes risk perception and the factors that enable or disable one from acting on a warning. Particularly through environmental and …

Implementation Of A Patient-Centered Communication Model In The Emergency Department, Carrie Mull Nov 2017

Implementation Of A Patient-Centered Communication Model In The Emergency Department, Carrie Mull

Doctoral Projects

The objective of this scholarly project is to determine the impact of patient-centered communication education in an emergency department (ED) on the perception of workplace safety. The ED is a vulnerable setting and susceptible to workplace violence (WPV) due in part to increasing numbers of patients presenting to EDs with primary psychiatric complaints. High-quality patient-staff interactions correlate positively with better treatment outcomes. Patient-centered communication skills can be taught, and patients have similar expectations of what patient-centered communication means no matter their diagnoses. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to conduct patient-centered communication education with nurses, nursing assistants, and …

Facebook As A New Media - Cultural And Communication Phenomenon Of Globalization, Liljana Siljanovska Oct 2017

Facebook As A New Media - Cultural And Communication Phenomenon Of Globalization, Liljana Siljanovska

UBT International Conference

The Internet social communication is a supplement and extension of the traditional social behavior. It has been proven that the more individuals in communicative realities are connected, communicate tete-a-tete, they more commonly use other media for mutual communication, including Internet social communication. In fact, the new media, or social networks, upgrade traditional social behavior without having to increase or decrease it. The term "reality" is increasingly virtualized and falls under the influence of the media that is expressing the multifunctionality that gives dimension, shape and transforms the public. The theoretical reorganization of space and time generalizes the communication content and …

Kennan And The Neglected Variable In Post-Socialist Societies: The Loss Of Honest Dialogue And The Need For Empathy, Joan Davison

Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the symbolism of George Kennan’s famous “X” article relative to the challenges of contemporary post transitions. It unpacks recent political discourse, discussing the critical application of practices such as thinking with your heart, parrhesis of the significance of uncertainty and reflection for question is: What would Kennan write in an X Article to states in transition paper employs both the definition suggested by Michel Foucault who understood it as “fearless speech” and Eric Voegelin who closely follows Plato’s meaning linking it with “heart” (dis)order of representatives of a society.

Trolling Twitter, Eric Vorst Sep 2017

Trolling Twitter, Eric Vorst

Dissertations

Political polarization is a defining feature of the contemporary American political landscape. While there is little doubt that elite polarization levels have risen dramatically in recent decades, there is some debate over the existence of a corresponding rise in mass polarization. Recent scholarship on mass polarization has cited evidence related to citizens’ positions on public policy issues, party sorting, and geographic polarization; however, questions remain as to the nature and extent of mass polarization in online spaces. Specifically, more needs to be known regarding how expressions of elite polarization influence the formation of polarized communities within social media.

The Experience Of Parents Of Early-Returned Missionaries, Kristine J. Doty-Yells, Harmony Packer, Malisa M. Drake-Brooks, Russell T. Warne, Cameron R. John Sep 2017

The Experience Of Parents Of Early-Returned Missionaries, Kristine J. Doty-Yells, Harmony Packer, Malisa M. Drake-Brooks, Russell T. Warne, Cameron R. John

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This paper shares the results of a mixed methods study designed to understand the lived experiences of parents of early-returned LDS missionaries. Researchers conducted two focus groups of parents (n = 7) and developed and administered a survey (n = 199). The study considered the phenomenon through the theoretical lenses of Kübler-Ross’s model of grief and Boss’s model of ambiguous loss. The results suggested that parents struggle with the early-return process, the lack of communication with mission presidents, a perceived lack of support from some church leaders and ward members, and personal adjustment to their child’s early return. Clinical implications …

Variables Influencing Frequency Of Preschool Teachers’ Communication With Families About Children’S Learning And Development: Teacher Preparation, Structural Supports, And Self-Efficacy, Michelle Levy

Doctoral Dissertations

Both families and teachers play an important role in preschool children’s learning and development and research has shown that both high quality preschool and family engagement in children’s learning at home improve children’s social and academic outcomes. However, it is not clear that teachers are adequately prepared or supported to communicate with families about children’s learning and development. This survey research involving 143 preschool teachers working in state or federally funded preschool programs examined the relationship between teacher preparation specific to family engagement, structural supports that provide teachers with opportunities to communicate with families, teacher’s feelings of self-efficacy related to …

Song Rhythm Development In Zebra Finches, Julia Hyland Bruno Sep 2017

Song Rhythm Development In Zebra Finches, Julia Hyland Bruno

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation investigates song-rhythm learning in songbirds. Songbirds have been studied extensively in mechanistic investigations into the sensorimotor underpinnings of the cultural transmission of learned vocalizations. While several studies identified forebrain song-system neurons that generate rhythmic song patterns, we know little about how song rhythms are learned. The first part of the dissertation describes methods for detecting and analyzing birdsong rhythm patterns, and demonstrates their utility for identifying the role of song rhythms in social interactions. Results suggest that rhythm plasticity in zebra finch song may provide a potential vehicle for communication. Controlled song-learning experiments further found that developing zebra …

Writing For Strangers: Structural Transformations Of The Public Letter, 1640-1790, Shang-Yu Sheng Sep 2017

Writing For Strangers: Structural Transformations Of The Public Letter, 1640-1790, Shang-Yu Sheng

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines public letters in England during the period spanning the English Civil War to the French Revolution, showing how authors employed the printed epistolary form to imagine different relations with the “stranger readers” who constituted the nascent reading public. I employ a formalist approach to analyze the various rhetorics made possible through the public letter’s framed structure, focusing on the assemblages of the narrative positions of letter writer, addressee, and reader. Each chapter describes a mode of the public letter in socio-spatial terms: spectacle, network, community, and public. Building on studies in book history and print culture, this …

Communication In A Palliative Care Setting: The Use Of Shadow Box As A Strategy, Sufia Turner, Nicole Harder Aug 2017

Communication In A Palliative Care Setting: The Use Of Shadow Box As A Strategy, Sufia Turner, Nicole Harder

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Communicating with palliative patients and families is a fundamental yet difficult skill for nursing students to acquire. While many nursing programs didactically instruct palliative theory, actual hands on application comes with challenges. Gillett, O'Neill and Bloomfield (2016) found intrinsic and extrinsic factors were contributing to student's inability to communicate effectively with patients and families. Intrinsic factors were those such as a lack of self-confidence and discomfort with the emotional aspect of the communication. Whereas extrinsic issues could be nurses in the field barring students from caring for palliative patients as a way to mitigate how and what is said to …
