Discourse And Discharge: Linguistic Analysis And Abuse Of The "Exemption By Declaration" Process In Bankruptcy, Kenneth D. Ferguson Jan 1996

Discourse And Discharge: Linguistic Analysis And Abuse Of The "Exemption By Declaration" Process In Bankruptcy, Kenneth D. Ferguson

Faculty Works

In Taylor v. Freeland & Kronz, the United States Supreme Court interpreted section 522(1) of the Bankruptcy Code according to its "plain meaning" and permitted a debtor to exempt $110,000 that was ineligible for exemption under substantive exemption law. The decision of the Court was premised on the fact that there was no timely objection to the claim of exemption. Although conceding that its decision might tempt debtors to claim exemptions in property ineligible for exemption on the chance that the trustee and creditors would fail to object in time, the Court cataloged a number of other remedies, including denial …

An Investigation Into Attitudes Surrounding Facilitated Communication, Jessica N. Peregoy

Theses & Honors Papers

This qualitative study investigated facilitators' opinions regarding facilitated communication (FC). Six individuals who have experience and/or training in the use of this method were interviewed. Issues discussed included FC's effectiveness for individuals other than those with autism, training prior to using the method, need for modifications in the method, and validity of the communication arising from the use of FC. Recurring themes were constructed from comments made during the course of the interviews. Each theme was supported by comments made by at least half of the facilitators. These themes were dissatisfaction with formal training, application to other populations, acknowledgement of …

Effects Of Therapist Gender On Client Communications In Marital Therapy, Laurel C. Agee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to explore how therapist and client gender are associated with communication behaviors of males and females in marital therapy. The majority of research on therapist gender issues has been conducted with individual clients. Few data exist on the effects of therapist gender within marital therapy. This study examined the communication patterns of couples within a marital therapy setting and the influence of therapist gender on those patterns. Forty-six 10-minute videotape segments of marital therapy were coded for communication patterns. Coded verbal statement categories included the verbal behaviors of agreement, supportive, solution of problems, and …

Wooing The Hispanic: A Study Of Marketing Communication Strategies Targeting The United States Hispanic Market, Olga I Delgado Jan 1995

Wooing The Hispanic: A Study Of Marketing Communication Strategies Targeting The United States Hispanic Market, Olga I Delgado

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Case studies of three national corporations examine their successful U.S. Hispanic marketing communication strategies. They are Ford Motor Company, Anheuser-Busch Companies, Incorporated, and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Similarities of strategies are an emphasis on community relations, reliance on Spanish-language messages, and a geographic concentration in the largest Hispanic markets. Differences are media mix and advertising style. Ford and Anheuser-Busch strive to meet regional needs and focus on electronic media. Metropolitan Life uses a general approach and emphasizes print media. Important trends for U.S. Hispanic marketing are the growing homogenization of Hispanic groups which permitted the introduction of pan-Hispanic strategies and …

On Lexical And Syntactic Processing Of Bangla Language By Computer., Probal Sengupta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A distinctive intelligent trait of human beings is the ability to carry out meaningful communication through language. The communication may be direct as in spoken conversation or indirect as in written form, through the audio-visual media, etc. Linguistic ability in humans have fascinated scholars ever since man first learnt to use language. Linguistics, the branch of study involved in studying the nature of human linguistic communication, is perhaps as old as language itself. The invention of the computer added a new dimension to linguistics. Making the computer emu- late human linguistic behaviour was taken up as a challenge by computer …

Indian Television: The State, Privatisation And The Struggle For Media Autonomy, Geoffrey W. Reeves Jan 1994

Indian Television: The State, Privatisation And The Struggle For Media Autonomy, Geoffrey W. Reeves

Research outputs pre 2011

India represents an example of immense complexity and diversity in cultural production and communications. Broadcasting, film, newspaper, magazine, and musical production have been characterised by regional and linguistic diversity, with non-Hindi and non-English media in the private sphere especially showing signs of remarkable growth over the last decade or more (Jeffrey 1993). While the basic role of the state and state regulatory framework was established under British colonial rule, it has undergone substantial modification in the post-colonial period. In concert with many countries in the 'third world', private rather than state cultural and media production has become increasingly dominant to …

Taking Charge: Second Graders Negotiate Ownership Of Their Expressive Writing, Susan Douglas Fleming Jan 1994

Taking Charge: Second Graders Negotiate Ownership Of Their Expressive Writing, Susan Douglas Fleming

Educational Studies Dissertations

This ethnographic study of a single, second grade, public school classroom explores students' ownership of their writing as they negotiate their dual roles of active writer and compliant student.

Writing process advocates such as Calkins (1987), Graves (1983), and Murray (1968, 1985) stress the need for student writers to assume ownership of their work by writing from personal experience and by making the decisions governing direction of the text. This involvement encourages awareness of self as learner and as person, and stimulates cognitive and identity development. Robert Brooke (1991), in a study of college students, points out that the power …

Scientific Text Structure Awareness: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Tertiary Students From Different Language Backgrounds, Catherine Mcloughlin Jan 1994

Scientific Text Structure Awareness: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Tertiary Students From Different Language Backgrounds, Catherine Mcloughlin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Research in both first and second language reading has shown that awareness of text structure, or rhetorical organisation is related to superior recall of main ideas from expository prose passages. The present study investigates awareness of scientific text structure among tertiary students from different language backgrounds. In this investigation, four reading passages containing two rhetorical text structures found in scientific discourse, comparison/contrast and problem/solution are employed. Meyer’s (1975) hierarchical content structure analysis was used to analyse the texts into top, high, mid and low level ideas corresponding to main and supporting ideas. The research questions were centred around three major …

Communication Principles In Pastoral Counseling, Dieter Joel Jagnow May 1993

Communication Principles In Pastoral Counseling, Dieter Joel Jagnow

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

There are many elements involved in a pastoral counseling process. A handbook would include all or some topics such as a definition of pastoral counseling, its distinctive nature, its objectives, counseling techniques, and the role of God's Word in the process. In this thesis we will touch some of the basic topics of pastoral counseling. However, the main purpose is to approach an important ingredient of pastoral counseling that usually is not included as a separate topic in counseling manuals, that is, communication, particularly interpersonal communication.

This study intends to explore the pastoral counseling process as an interpersonal communication process …

The following measurements and information were included in the portfolio: (1) home and literacy background information, (2) parent, teacher, and student attitude information, (3) …

The Status Of Speech Communication In The Clark County High Schools, Rheba C Washington-Lindsey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Clark County School District has implemented the communication strand within the high school English curriculum. Its objectives and activities provide instructional guidelines for teacher use within the classroom situation. This study surveyed high school English teachers and found that the majority of teachers did little or nothing to incorporate speech in their curriculum. The principal reasons given were lack of time, lack of materials, and inadequate university preparation. The study also found newer teachers were more receptive to changes that would allow them to include speech in the curriculum than are veteran teachers; Most teachers support speech education but …

Sound Symbolic Involvement, Janis B. Nuckolls Jun 1992

Sound Symbolic Involvement, Janis B. Nuckolls

Faculty Publications

This article examines an iconic form of communication, sound symbolism, which has been associated with oral cultures and implicated in paradigms of primitive mentality, I argue that Lowland Ecuadorean Quechua speakers use sound symbolic iconicity to create interlocutionary involvement. A speaker's performative foregrounding of a sound symbolic form simuhtes the salient qualities of an action, event, or process, and thereby invites a listener to project into an experience. This projected involvement, in turn, points the listener to deeper kinds of imaginative, intellectual, and emotional engagement with the narrative. The argument is based on an analysis of the formal and semantic …

Facilitating Acceptance Of Alternative Communication Devices In Classrooms By Teachers, Tracie Empey May 1992

Facilitating Acceptance Of Alternative Communication Devices In Classrooms By Teachers, Tracie Empey

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

There exists a number of persons who lack adequate speech for communicative purposes. Many of the non-vocal children and adults from these populations have benefitted from the development of various alternative communication devices. The non-vocal individual is one whose speech does not provide a functional means of meeting communication needs. However, this does not necessarily mean that the non-vocal individual has no speech or vocalization at all, nor does it mean that the individual may not develop fully functional speech in the future. (Vanderheiden, 1975). The devices used with these people allow an increase in the abilities to meet various …

Deep-Seated Culture: Understanding Sitting, Karen T. Keifer-Boyd Jan 1992

Deep-Seated Culture: Understanding Sitting, Karen T. Keifer-Boyd

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Similar to the way that our culture influences how we interpret the world, the way that we sit in a chair and the type of chair that we are in positions what we see and how we are seen. Environmental cues communicate information through which we establish context and define a situation (Rapoport, 1982, p. 56). In this paper I examined the ways in which chairs (defined as that which is underneath us when "sitting") and sitting (defined as the infinite ways that we sustain our bodies in a bent position ranging from squatting, kneeling, reclining, or the lotus position) …

The Progression Of Photographic Image Manipulation In Communication: An Argument Against The "Revolution" Of Technological Change, Cynthia Lynn Wood Jan 1992

The Progression Of Photographic Image Manipulation In Communication: An Argument Against The "Revolution" Of Technological Change, Cynthia Lynn Wood

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The technology of photographic image manipulation has evolved faster than our ability to consider its implications. This thesis looks at the recent evolution of image manipulation, which some regard as a "revolution." The various stages of technological progression are examined using examples according to Brian Winston's model of technological change. These stages include: scientific competence, ideation, prototypes, supervening necessity, invention, the 'law' of the suppression of radical potential, and technological performance. A review of literature on the topic of photography in communication is included as well as an examination of the early photographers who used image manipulation in their work. …

Communication And Socialization Skills At Ages 2 And 3 In "Late-Talking" Young Children, Rhea Paul, Shawn S. Looney, Pamela S. Dahm Aug 1991

Communication And Socialization Skills At Ages 2 And 3 In "Late-Talking" Young Children, Rhea Paul, Shawn S. Looney, Pamela S. Dahm

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Twenty-one apparently normal children between 18 and 34 months of age with slow expressive language acquisition were compared to a group of normally speaking children matched for age, SES, and sex ratio, on the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (Sparrow, Balla, & Cicchetti, 1984). The late talkers (LTs) scored significantly lower not only in expressive communication, but also in receptive communication and socialization. A follow-up study of the same subjects, seen at age 3, showed nearly half the 3-year-olds with a history of LT remained delayed in expressive communication and socialization, while one third remained behind in receptive language. The data …
