We have designed a collaborative scientific visualization package that will aid researchers from distant, diverse locations to work together in developing scientific codes, providing them with a system to analyze their scientific data. We have utilized Java to develop this infrastructure. Two important areas which we have concentrated on developing are 1) a collaborative framework from which the scientific data is interpreted and utilized, and 2) a framework, which is customizable to the suit the needs of a particular task and/or scientific group.

Marital Adjustment Across The Transition To Parenthood: The Role Of Communication And Personality, Brandon Mathew Larson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Past research on the transition to parenthood has consistently found that this life phase results in many changes in a couple's marital relationship, specifically declines in couples' marital adjustment. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between constructive communication, personality traits, and spouses' marital adjustment during the transition to parenthood; Participants were 70 married couples expecting their first child. Self-report measures were administered to all participants during the third trimester of pregnancy, three months postpartum, and nine months postpartum; Results showed that marital adjustment significantly declined during the transition to parenthood. Constructive communication consistently correlated significantly with marital adjustment …

Application Of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (Atm) Technology To Picture Archiving And Communication Systems (Pacs): A Survey, Sridharan R Madabhushanam
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (R-ISDN) provides a range of narrowband and broad-band services for voice, video, and multimedia. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) has been selected by the standards bodies as the transfer mode for implementing B-ISDN; The ability to digitize images has lead to the prospect of reducing the physical space requirements, material costs, and manual labor of traditional film handling tasks in hospitals. The system which handles the acquisition, storage, and transmission of medical images is called a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The transmission system will directly impact the speed of image transfer. Today the most …

Music And Interpersonal Communication: An In-Depth View Of Ani Difranco And Her Lyrics, Robyn Jana Ginsburg
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study provides an analysis of music as a form of interpersonal communication by examining how independent singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco's music lyrics provide her listeners with a foundation for relationship formation based on empathy and self disclosure. This study divides DiFranco's song lyrics into three categories of folk music, more specifically, message, protest, and propaganda songs which provide her audience with an ideology to which her fans can relate. Additionally, DiFranco's messages fall into the psychological categories of emotion, perception, cognition, motivation, needs, and memory as well as the sociological categories which demonstrate how her messages reach society--through the folk …

Benchmarking The Computation And Communication Performance Of The Cm-5, Kivanc Dincer, Zeki Bozkus, Sanjay Ranka, Geoffrey C. Fox
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
Thinking Machines' CM-5 machine is a distributed-memory, message-passing computer. In this paper we devise a performance benchmark for the base and vector units and the data communication networks of the CM-5 machine. We model the communication characteristics such as communication latency and bandwidths of point-to-point and global communication primitives. We show, on a simple Gaussian elimination code, that an accurate static performance estimation of parallel algorithms is possible by using those basic machine properties connected with computation, vectorization, communication, and synchronization. Furthermore, we describe the embedding of meshes or hypercubes on the CM-5 fat-tree topology and illustrate the performance results …
Discourse And Discharge: Linguistic Analysis And Abuse Of The "Exemption By Declaration" Process In Bankruptcy, Kenneth D. Ferguson
Discourse And Discharge: Linguistic Analysis And Abuse Of The "Exemption By Declaration" Process In Bankruptcy, Kenneth D. Ferguson
Faculty Works
In Taylor v. Freeland & Kronz, the United States Supreme Court interpreted section 522(1) of the Bankruptcy Code according to its "plain meaning" and permitted a debtor to exempt $110,000 that was ineligible for exemption under substantive exemption law. The decision of the Court was premised on the fact that there was no timely objection to the claim of exemption. Although conceding that its decision might tempt debtors to claim exemptions in property ineligible for exemption on the chance that the trustee and creditors would fail to object in time, the Court cataloged a number of other remedies, including denial …
An Object-Oriented Modeling Approach To Build Data Communication Model, Wuqing Xu
An Object-Oriented Modeling Approach To Build Data Communication Model, Wuqing Xu
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The problem of data communications between process units within a telecommunication network based on OSI's standard seven layer Reference Model is addressed. In this thesis, we expose the generic aspect of protocol implementation as an object-oriented conceptual model emphasizing on the dynamic aspects of the objects involved while we explore both aspects, namely, static and dynamic aspects. A data communication model is proposed; Through the development of the conceptual model, we can capture the crucial aspects of network system and omit others. In developing the conceptual model for data communication, we apply object-oriented modeling principles to explore the potential elements …

Electronic Commerce And The Communication Of Information, Donna Carroll Bigelow
Theses
Electronic Commerce is a relatively new phenomenon in today's market place. Commerce or the buying and selling of goods and services can take many forms. In the early years of computerization. commercial activities revolved around the exchange of financial data between businesses and banks (Electronic Funds Transfer). Then businesses began exploring the transfer of data in an electronic format between individual businesses in the form of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). Over time much broader types of business transactions began occurring. Data exchange included inventory items, marketing. sales materials, product design. Items which were sent via mail took on an electronic …
Norms Of Communication And Commodification, Wendy J. Gordon
Norms Of Communication And Commodification, Wendy J. Gordon
Faculty Scholarship
Around the laws that regulate information and communication swarm a host of related nonlegal norms: norms of secrecy, confidentiality, and privacy; of anonymity, source-identity, and citation; of quotation, paraphrase, and hyperbole; norms of free copying and norms of obtaining permission; norms of gossip and of blackmail. The articles by Saul Levmore and Richard McAdams provide useful windows on some of the ways these laws and norms interact. The two articles also provide insight into the comparative advantage possessed in some circumstances by law and by nonlegal norms, respectively, when information and communication are at issue. In my brief Comment I …

The Portrayal Of Older Adults In The New York Times And The Omaha World-Herald, 1982 And 1992, Robert V. Whitmore
Student Work
Images of older people in the news and entertainment media contribute to the way society learns about aging in our society. If the daily newspaper is considered a record of daily lives, then the portrayal of older people in newspaper can show us how we view the aging process and how that view changes over time. There has been little research into how newspapers portray older people, and that research has reached little consensus about the picture of aging we receive from our newspapers. This study seeks to add to the current literature about newspaper portrayal of people over 60 …
