Closing Communication Gaps For Unplanned Surgical Patients: One Pre-Op Checklist At A Time, Seda L. Vash
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Unplanned, inpatient surgical patients were experiencing poor outcomes and dissatisfaction with their overall care. This surgical patient population also lacked communication from their healthcare teams with regard to plans of care throughout their hospital stays.
Context: This was a quality improvement project for the unplanned, inpatient surgical patient population in the Central Valley of California. Approximately 13% of this hospital’s surgical patients required post-surgical care in the inpatient units. These patients, according to unfavorable HCAHPS scores, experienced unsatisfying care and insufficient communication from their healthcare teams, including physicians and nurses.
Intervention: This project implemented an Add-On Communication Tool for …
Nurse Perception Of Technology Integration, Adrian D. Hordon
Nurse Perception Of Technology Integration, Adrian D. Hordon
Dissertations
With the increase in technological advancements integrated into hospitals, physician offices, and nursing programs, there is concern regarding the imposition on the clinical foundation of nursing as a human improvement profession during the implementation of technology advancements. Technology can potentially serve as a distraction and even a false feedback loop for improved care, causing an impact on the fundamental quality of patient care. Mobile technology advancement such as Electronic Health Record (EHR) charting and smartphone use in the clinical nurse setting provides both prospects and challenges that have not been widely researched. This dissertation proposal examines registered nurse survey results, …

The Construction Of Identity Through Tattoos: A Semiotic And Performative Exploration Of Trauma, Erin Lionberger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this current historical moment, tattoos and tattooing have become a glorified cultural phenomenon that has been thousands of years in the making. The idea that tattoos can be used to express one’s identity is not a new concept — various fields, such as anthropology, cultural studies, and sociology, have studied the relationship between tattoos and identity. In this dissertation, I explore the signification and performative aspects of Auschwitz concentration camp tattoos and 9/11 memorial tattoos, while also considering the changes in meaning and interpretation that occur within and throughout space and time. Chapter one introduces the topic and provides …

Automatic Change Of Sdr Parameters' Values During Runtime In Gnuradio For Satellite Communication Subsystem, Yasir M. O. Abbas, Kenichi Asami
Small Satellite Conference
Shifting from traditional hardware radios to the Software-Defined Radio (SDR) is becoming reality, and SDRs are going rapidly to dominate the satellite communication subsystems. For testing designs, researchers use many tools such as the popular GNURADIO software which programs and controls SDR devices by providing signal processing blocks implementing the desired signals as well as hardware interface blocks. It is user-friendly and simple to beginners. Moreover, it has powerful and advanced capabilities for more complex missions. In some cases, we need to modify communication parameters such as frequency, data rate or modulation scheme without relaunching the program. Many times, the …

Decolonial Lessons From Historical African American Community Leaders: Reconstructing African American Identity As Resistance In Praxis, Rhejean King-Johnson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study analyzes the communication praxis for the purposes of decolonization of four community leaders, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, Ida B. Wells and Malcolm X in efforts to reconstruct African American (AA) identity by exposing the inhumane speech, behavior and thought of white supremacy. Their work employs specific communication strategies such as descriptive narrative, allegory, two-ness, anaphora, and metaphors to address the oppressive white-centric representation of AA identity and provide a decolonial shift in U.S. Eurocentric ideology. Through a close reading and textual analysis of representative works such as, Frederick Douglass’s book, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” (2005), …

Communication And Learning: The Bilateral Information Transmission In The Cobweb Model, Eran Guse, M. C. Sunny Wong
Communication And Learning: The Bilateral Information Transmission In The Cobweb Model, Eran Guse, M. C. Sunny Wong
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
Communication is a natural activity to gain information and exchange ideas for making proper economic decisions. The mechanism of social interaction remains inadequately understood. Previous studies have investigated the consequences of communication under a one-way information transmission mechanism from moreinformed leaders to less-informed followers. This mechanism leads to the ‘‘boomerang effect’’—a reduction in leaders’ forecasting efficiency due to the information transmission. However, communication should be interactive. This paper devises a two-stage interactive cobweb model with a generalized information diffusion process called the bi-directional information diffusion (BID) process, which allows both information transmission and feedback mechanisms. Numerical analysis and simulations show …

Exploring Racial Injustice Conversations In Intergenerational Asian American Households Following The Death Of George Floyd: A Case Study, Jasmine Nicole Lopez Itliong
Master's Theses
This study explores intergenerational racial injustice conversations in Asian American households by focusing on conversations that occurred following the death of George Floyd. Asian American historical oppression, Eastern versus Western ideologies, and intergenerational communication conflict present several challenges for navigating conversations about racial injustice among family members. Given the important role of family in facilitating identity and fostering support, this study also considers the implications of mental health and well-being of Asian Americans associated with their ability to communicate about racial injustice. Informed by Racial Triangulation Theory and Family Communication Patterns Theory, four in-depth interviews were conducted, along with a …

Empowering Hope-Based Climate Change Communication Techniques For The Gulf Of Maine, Aimee Bonanno, Megan Ennes, Jennifer A. Hoey, Emily Moberg, Sarah-Mae Nelson, Nette Pletcher, Richelle L. Tanner
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
The Gulf of Maine is one of the fastest warming marine areas on the planet: The industries and creatures that call it home face an unprecedented shift in their interactions and existence. Scientists, policy makers, and practitioners often want to communicate to the public about the seriousness of the situation to encourage mitigation and adaptation. Many standard communication strategies that rely on fear and scientific authority alone—rather than comprehensive explanations that include solutions—can leave audiences feeling overwhelmed and disengaged, instead of hopeful and motivated to act. In this practice bridge, we showcase a social science research-based climate change communication “tool-kit” …

Sight and sound is a type of correspondence that joins distinctive substance structures like content, sound, pictures, liveliness, or video into a solitary show, rather than customary broad communications, like written word or sound chronicles. Famous instances of interactive media incorporate video web recordings, sound slideshows and animated videos. Multimedia can be recorded for playback on PCs, workstations, cell phones, and other electronic gadgets, either on request or progressively (streaming). In the early long stretches of sight and sound, the expression "rich media" was inseparable from intuitive mixed media. Over the long run. Improved degrees of intuitiveness are made conceivable …

This study explores the vernacular discourse of unionized Mexican immigrants living and working in Orange County in California. Given the current political climate and the historical roots of the construction of "race" in the United States, I explore how the current sociopolitical conditions of organized Latina/o affect their understanding of race and their experiences with racism. It is also important to address the everyday racism the Latina/o community faces that continue to marginalize them. This study focuses on the vernacular discourses on race and racism of organized working-class Latinas/os who are members of labor unions. Through intentional conversations about racial …

It Is. It Isn't. It Is., Chad Kuyper
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
This piece was written in late July 2020. Stay-at-home orders had been lifted a couple months prior in Minnesota, but both the state and the country were seeing a steep rise in COVID-19 infections. No viable vaccine was on the horizon.
I wanted to play with chronology in this piece. Spending fourteen months inside the same set of walls makes both time – and memory – slippery. Hard to wrestle into a recognizable shape. So the events of these two days are told in a chronological jumble that more closely resembles how I recall events of the last year. And …
