Luther’S Preaching Of Good Works, Robert Heckmann
Luther’S Preaching Of Good Works, Robert Heckmann
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this thesis is to examine Luther's preaching of good works and evaluate his work somewhat on the basis of the standard layed down in the next section. It will include a short study of his preaching style and habits in general, an examination of his definition of good works and his description and use of the power of the Gospel to enable the people to live the life in Christ.
A Critical-Exegetical Study Of Hebrews 6:4-8, Herbert Hohenstein
A Critical-Exegetical Study Of Hebrews 6:4-8, Herbert Hohenstein
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this paper is an investigation of Hebrews 6:4-8, especially in the light of the problem posed by the text, the impossibility of a second repentance.
The Great Physician, Frederic Niedner
The Great Physician, Frederic Niedner
Concordia Theological Monthly
When God made man, He used the humblest material and made a supreme creature. Great artists have dipped their brushes into pigments and have painted upon canvas figures that seemed to live. God took the dust of the ground and made of it a body that really lived. And when the Creator had breathed into this body's nostrils the breath of life, man became a living soul. This man's body was fearfully and wonderfully made, perfect in its form and consummate in its functions. Man was possessed of health from head to foot, in mind and body. There was no …

An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler
An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler
Bachelor of Divinity
Working with adults has proved to me an enjoyable and rewarding experience. This thesis is written with a desire to help give adults that which has proved to be a blessing to me and to fulfill in their lives this same joy which they may have never known.
The author does not pretend to be an authority on this subject matter, but is writing on adult confirmation materials merely because of his love in this field. Neither does he intend to exhaust all the material related to this paper, but merely to present an overview in order to evaluate some …
Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger
Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger
Bachelor of Divinity
The present thesis cannot do full justice to that comprehensive title for the simple reason that the field of form-criticism is far too broad and complex for the writer to treat it exhaustively in one paper. This thesis will attempt in part to delineate for the reader what form-criticism is and how it works.

An Examination Of The Passages In The New Testament Which Speak Of The Royal Priesthood Of Believers, Norman Brauer
An Examination Of The Passages In The New Testament Which Speak Of The Royal Priesthood Of Believers, Norman Brauer
Bachelor of Divinity
It is the purpose of this thesis to examine the passages of the New Testament which speak of the Royal Priesthood of Believers. Actually, there are only five instances where the Christian priesthood is specifically mentioned. They are I Peter 2:5; I Peter 2:9; Revelation. 1:6; Revelation 5:10; and Revelation 20:6. All other references to priests or priesthood are either to the priestly office of Christ or to Jewish and pagan priests.

God's Grace The Preacher's Tool. A Homiletical Study Of Titus 2:11-14, Richard R. Caemmerer

Most pastors read the Christmas Epistle during the holidays. Many preached on it as a text for a Christmas message. As they prepared that sermon, they probably realized that this text speaks only secondarily to congregations. Primarily it is addressed to a pastor, a pastor who is training other pastors. It does not speak specifically of Christmas, but of the redemption of Jesus Christ in general; not specifically of the moods and joys of Christmas, but of the objective of good works in Christian people. Hence the text speaks to pastors about their own ministry to people, especially the ministry …
The Message Of The First Epistle Of Peter For Our Day, Eric R. Malte
The Message Of The First Epistle Of Peter For Our Day, Eric R. Malte
Concordia Theological Monthly
The purpose of this essay is to interpret and illuminate one of the New Testament Epistles which focuses to a rare degree the interests, needs, and problems of the Church of the first century, and gives classical expression to the teachings of Christ and His Apostles in regard to them. These interests, needs, and problems are not greatly different from those which confront thoughtful Christian men and women the world over today. Of this First Epistle of Peter, Luther once said: “It is one of the noblest books of the New Testament, and the true, pure Gospel."
An Outline Of The First Epistle Of John, Martin J. Hasz
An Outline Of The First Epistle Of John, Martin J. Hasz
Concordia Theological Monthly
The chief isagogical problem of the Epistle is its structure. Dr. R. C.H. Lenski states: “A curious circumstance about the letter is the fact that it seems to have no divisions. Commentators divide it in one way or in another, and state their reasons for such a division; but when one reads the letter, the proposed divisions do not satisfy. They are upset by the series of repetitions and reiterations that occur throughout the letter. That fact makes some interpreters complain about the lack of logic; but this letter has no formal parts, such as we commonly use and expect. …
Epicurean Catchwords In The Letters Of Saint Paul, Eugene Walter Nissen
Epicurean Catchwords In The Letters Of Saint Paul, Eugene Walter Nissen
Bachelor of Divinity
By way of an historical survey of Hellenistic Greece and of Epicurean expansion, coupled with a comparison of Epicurean and Pauline teaching, this thesis will attempt to show that it is not only possible but very probable that Epicurean catchwords do exist in the writings of St. Paul, and that such terminology was emptied of its former connotation, refilled with Christian meaning, and redirected against the Epicureans.

Sermonic Study On Isaiah 26:19, Theo. Laetsch
Sermonic Study On Isaiah 26:19, Theo. Laetsch
Concordia Theological Monthly
The resurrection of Christ is the foundation on which the faith and hope, the very life of every Christian, is built (1 Cor. 15:14-20). The fact of Easter pertains to the New Testament. But the promise of a future Easter dates back to that day on which sin and death entered into the world and on which the Lord gave to sinful Adam and Eve the blessed assurance of the coming of a Deliverer (Gen. 3:15). This promise served as the basis of Adam's hope and faith, expressed in the name he gave to his wife, Eve, the living, because …
Hebrews- An Exegetical Study, James W. Mayer
Hebrews- An Exegetical Study, James W. Mayer
Bachelor of Divinity
In my sketch of the conception of the Christian High-Priest found in Hebrews. I shall consider in the first part the person of Christ as suited to His High-priesthood, and in the second part Christ as performing the work of a High-priest. I shall stress the special emphasis of Christ as OFFERER and the OFFERING which He Brings. A comparison of the Christian High-priest with the high-priests under the Old Dispensation will not be dealt with in a separate chapter, but will be drawn incidentally as the argument progresses.
The Concepts Of Pistis And Elpis And, Agapee In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Karl L. Barth
The Concepts Of Pistis And Elpis And, Agapee In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Karl L. Barth
Bachelor of Divinity
We shall not attempt to solve the problem of authorship, nor, will the content and purpose of the epistle be treated beyond their relation to pistis, elpis, and agapee. Our problem is to determine: 1. what these words mean in the various passages in which they are used; 2. the role that these concepts play where they are present merely by implication. e. g., "tha abiding city" as part of the hope concept; 3. their relation to one another.
Conference Paper On Romans 4:5, H. J. Bouman
Conference Paper On Romans 4:5, H. J. Bouman
Concordia Theological Monthly
A very personal reason prompts the selection of my topic. In my senior year at the Seminary, I had not yet really learned what Christianity really is. To be sure, I was not a scoffer. Far from it. I yearned for the honor of being a Christian, but I did not dare. The sainted Dr. Bente had succeeded in crushing all my pride in human wisdom. In his lectures on the philosophical systems, ancient, medieval, and modern, he had shown us that human reason the moment it tried to explain transcendental problems disregards its own rules of logic in its …
A Comparison Of Peter's Discourses In The Acts Of The Apostles With Peter's First Epistle, Willard Lewis Burce
A Comparison Of Peter's Discourses In The Acts Of The Apostles With Peter's First Epistle, Willard Lewis Burce
Bachelor of Divinity
In criticism of the authorship, genuineness, integrity, and historical accuracy of the book of Acts, the discourses and sayings of the apostles which are recorded in that book have come repeatedly under close scrutiny.
The Interpretation Of Difficult Bible Passages, W. Arndt
The Interpretation Of Difficult Bible Passages, W. Arndt
Concordia Theological Monthly
What a grand book we have in the Bible! While we are said to live in a new age since scientists 'have learned how to split the atom and there is preached to us the philosophy of collective action in national and international affairs in the · labor world and politics - a philosophy which is definitely in the saddle and riding fast and furiously-we Lutherans cling to the old Book. We say it comes from God and it leads to God.
The Concept Of Love In The Johannine Writings, Omar Stuenkel
The Concept Of Love In The Johannine Writings, Omar Stuenkel
Bachelor of Divinity
In the present study I have given emphasis to the Johannine writings because John provides all points necessary for consideration. It is my hope that I can in the future expand and extend the consideration of the love-concept in the New Testament to include especially the magnificent Pauline passages and the Synoptic implications. I reserve the liberty however, in this paper, to adduce passages from any part of the New Testament where these will add a unique thought to the understanding of the Johannine concept of love.
The Means Of Grace From The Administrative Angle, P. E. Kretzmann
The Means Of Grace From The Administrative Angle, P. E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
The topic which is here to be briefly treated, chiefly on the basis of a problem which has recently been suggested for discussion, has been broached in the columns of this journal before, although not in an exhaustive manner. It is clearly not a mere academic question, nor may it be placed in the category of the adiaphora or a priori included in the field of casuistry, although certain situations may cause it to be placed under that heading. The problem, as it is before us, involves chiefly three loci in dogmatics, namely, De Ecclesia, De Ministerio Ecclesiastico, and De …
Chargis A Study On The Word For Grace In The New Testament, Robert Zorn
Chargis A Study On The Word For Grace In The New Testament, Robert Zorn
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The scope of this present study is not to be distinctly Doctrinal, or historical, tracing the doctrine of grace and its various aberrations, through history, much as such a study would be interesting and instructive. That would take us too far afield. It is our purpose to confine ourself to an examination of the word χ͔χ́ρ͔ις itself, and to trace its use in the New Testament. Seeing the importance of the Doctrine of Grace, it is essential that we study the divinely revealed record, to see how the word is used. This must ever be the basis for all doctrine, …
The Work Of The Holy Ghost In The Pauline Epistles With Special Reference To Enthusism, Norbert Mueller
The Work Of The Holy Ghost In The Pauline Epistles With Special Reference To Enthusism, Norbert Mueller
Bachelor of Divinity
Ever since the beginning of the Christian Church, Satan has tried to corrupt also this precious doctrine. In this treatise we shall consider, above all, one perversion of the doctrine of the work of the Holy Ghost, namely, the error of Enthusiasm, which our Confessions describe as the folly of "fanatical men, who dream that the Holy Ghost is given not through the Word, but because of certain preparation of their own, if they sit unoccupied and silent in obscure places, waiting for illumination, as the Enthusiasts formerly taught and the Anabaptists now teach.”
A Few Remarks On Col. 2, 18. 19 A, L. T. Wohfeil
A Few Remarks On Col. 2, 18. 19 A, L. T. Wohfeil
Concordia Theological Monthly
This verse has tried the patience of commentators, both ancient and modern, quite consistently. While many have been content to give what seemed to them the most plausible interpretation, a by no means negligible number of others have unwittingly admitted finding their "Waterloo" at this very verse by resorting to conjectures on account of a supposedly corrupt text, though there are, with only one unimportant exception, no variant readings. Like the suicide they consider conjecture the "man's way out,” but seem to forget that tampering with the MS. record may lead to equally serious consequences.

The Use Of ΧάΡιε In The Pauline Epistles, Walter W. Stuenkel
The Use Of ΧάΡιε In The Pauline Epistles, Walter W. Stuenkel
Bachelor of Divinity
The word χάριδ, under consideration in this thesis, holds a peculiar prestige in Lutheran theology. Our Lutheran Church is distinctly proud when it unfurls the banner of salvation by grace alone, and thereby distinguishes itself from all heterodox and unchristian bodies which corrupt this doctrine taught by χάριδ in Scripture and especially clarified in the Pauline Epistles.

Sermon Study On 1 Tim. 2, 1-6, Theo. Laetsch

Timothy, to whom this letter is addressed, had been left by Paul in charge of the large and influential congregation at Ephesus. Though still a young man, 1 Tim. 4, 12, Timothy was by no means a novice. Ho had been n "work-fellow'' of the apostle, Rom. 16, 21, for a number of years, had been entrusted with a number of important missions, and was one of the most trustworthy associates of Paul, Phil. 51, 20.
The Resurrection Of The Body In The Old Testament - An Exegetical Study, Allen Schuldheisz
The Resurrection Of The Body In The Old Testament - An Exegetical Study, Allen Schuldheisz
Bachelor of Divinity
It will be the object of the following treatise to present, in a brief way, some of the Scriptural evidence from the O.T., showing that the believers of the Old Covenant held fast to the hope or a resurrection as a cardinal article of their faith.
The Old Testament At Gettysburg, W. A. Maier
The Old Testament At Gettysburg, W. A. Maier
Concordia Theological Monthly
In Paragraph VI of the resolutions adopted by the United Lutheran Church at its last convention, at Savannah, Georgia, and claimed to bring that Church into closer relationships with other Lutheran bodies, we find a splendid appeal for a united front against Modernism and unbelief in Christian groups. The indictment against the tendency "to abbreviate or dilute the Christian message in the effort to make it acceptable to the modern age and adapt it to modern thought" is clear and emphatic. We in the Missouri Synod gratefully recognize every resolution or action designed to protest against infidelity in Protestant circles, …

Sermon Study On 1 Tim. 4, 4-11, T. Laetsch

In the opening verses of the fourth chapter the apostle had stated that in the latter times errorists would arise setting aside the norm of God's Word both as to doctrine and life.
