The Authenticity Of The Seven Words From The Cross, John Junke May 1969

The Authenticity Of The Seven Words From The Cross, John Junke

Bachelor of Divinity

In this paper I intend to give a critical analysis of the "Seven Words" which Christ spoke while on the cross. I will attempt through research chiefly to challenge or support the authenticity of each “Word" (hereafter the term "Word" will be used without quotation marks. When it is capitalized, it refers to one of the utterances which Christ made while on the cross. In some cases it will actually refer to only one word, as in John 19:30. In other cases it will refer to more than one word, as in Matthew 27:46.).

Henotẽs:Pauls Term For Christian Unityin Ephesians 4:3 And 4:13, John Edward Helmke

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We believe that in this light the almost casual treatment that henotẽs has received is a distressing situation, commanding our attention and challenging our best efforts. The purpose of this study paper is to help the church continue in its mission to the world by- seeking to better understand that mission in the light of henotẽs.

The Covenant Comes Of Age: A Study Of Jeremiah 31:31-34, Thomas Decker Nov 1968

The Covenant Comes Of Age: A Study Of Jeremiah 31:31-34, Thomas Decker

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper purposes to determine the historical and theological context into which Jeremiah introduced the concept of the new covenant found only in Jeremiah 31131-34. The Old Testament was acquainted with many covenants at various times; each held a place of importance with subsequent generations in understanding the relationship of Israel to the Kingdom of God. Integral to the thought of this paper is the question, “How was this once-mentioned new covenant of Jeremiah understood by God's people?" The scope of the problem spans the history of the Old Testament and the Christian Church. But this paper limits itself to …

The Plight Of Man: A Study In Contemporary Preaching, Lary Misner Jun 1968

The Plight Of Man: A Study In Contemporary Preaching, Lary Misner

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study comprises an examination of sermonic material for clues to the plight of man. Initially the research involves an assessment of the signs of man's plight and places these signs into significant categories of man's existence. After locating and classifying the plight of man, the analysis shifts to the meaning of the plight of man in all of the plight's dimensions. After summarizing various aspects of man's plight and its meaning, the analysis moves to detect the implications of plight and meaning for man and for the preaching task. Finally, several areas for further study are suggested on the …

The Revelation Of God In The Revelation To St John, Williard Mueller May 1968

The Revelation Of God In The Revelation To St John, Williard Mueller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The question to which this present paper addresses itself is that concerning the nature of revelation as this is reflected in the Revelation to John. It asks whether God's revelation in that writing is of Himself or of facts concerning Himself; what the source of the revelation is and in what manner it takes place; and whether revelation is an event of the past, the present, or the future. The Apocalypse is examined first to determine if its message can be clearly enough understood today to provide evidence for this investigation. The investigation then turns to the language describing revelation …

Principles For The Development Of Adult Premembership Instruction, Robert L. Conrad Feb 1968

Principles For The Development Of Adult Premembership Instruction, Robert L. Conrad

Concordia Theological Monthly

The need for a study was brought forcibly to the author's attention by his membership on a subcommittee of the Board of Parish Education of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The responsibility of the subcommittee is to formulate principles for adult premembership instruction in The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. The subcommittee could find no existing statement of principles, so it was forced to make a beginning on such a formulation.

Laurentius Valla (1407-1457): Renaissance Critic And Biblical Theologian, Marvin W. Anderson Jan 1968

Laurentius Valla (1407-1457): Renaissance Critic And Biblical Theologian, Marvin W. Anderson

Concordia Theological Monthly

When Laurentius Valla penned those words, he was writing the fuse scientific treatise on Latin grammar since John Duns Scotus. Leonardo Bruni died in the same year Valla’s treatise appeared. The year 1444 marks the return of Renaissance scholars to a philological analysis of classical texts. This method, which Valla soon applied to Biblical study, revolutionized medieval Biblical scholarship in the century before Trent. Valla's purpose was to revitalize Catholic faith. Protestants and Catholics still owe their fresh awareness of Scripture to the labors of Valla.

Principles For The Development Of Adult Premembership Instruction, Robert Conrad May 1967

Principles For The Development Of Adult Premembership Instruction, Robert Conrad

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The responsibility of preparing interested persons for membership in the congregation is a task that faces every parish pastor. In carrying out that responsibility, he needs to make decisions as to what his goals for such instruction shall be and how those goals shall be attained. There is nothing in writing in The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod that will help a pastor think through what the goals of the premembership process should be and what is the best way of attaining those goals. There are manuals available for the instruction of adults but there are no studies which investigate the underlying …

The Christian Under Grace, According To Romans 6:1-14, Walter Maier May 1967

The Christian Under Grace, According To Romans 6:1-14, Walter Maier

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis proposes to discuss one of the basic New Testament passages dealing with baptism and its significance for baptized believers, Romans 6:1-14. In this section the Apostle Paul speaks of one of the mighty, saving effects of the sacrament, the fact that it establishes spiritual union of the baptized with Christ. This is sometimes referred to as the "mystical union" of the believer and his Lord. Because of the union with Jesus, the child of God participates spiritually in Christ's crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection, and continuing life. As a result, the Christian is a new creation in Christ and, …

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper deals with the Healer Asklepios of Golden Age Greece and the healing miracles preserved in the early Christian Gospel. This present study was motivated by a preliminary exegetical consideration of the healing of the blind man in John 9:1-12. At the time of that initial, study in May, 1964, the author became interested in parallels to this pericope in the healings of Asklepios. Thought was given to the possibility that the writer of the Gospel of John composed his record with the healings of Asklepios in mind, and that certain emphases in the Gospel, traditions concerning the Healer …

Preaching And The Recovery Of The Church, Richard R. Caemmerer Mar 1966

Preaching And The Recovery Of The Church, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the first section, we dealt with the language of preaching. Can it be understood? Does God speak and act in it? In the second we dealt with the method of finding and conveying Biblical truth in preaching. Have current Biblical studies a contribution to make to the pastor as he sets about on his task of preparing and delivering sermons? The third article does not turn away from these questions and processes, but it locates them in their setting: the Christian church. Ours is a time of rediscovery of the meaning of the church.

The New Hermeneutic And Preaching, Richard R. Caemmerer Feb 1966

The New Hermeneutic And Preaching, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The first unit in this series discussed the implications for Christian preaching of current studies in the philosophy and theology of language, studies which are usually identified by some such term as linguistic analysis and connected with names like Ian Ramsey and Frederick Ferré As we now turn to the contemporary study of the Sacred Scriptures, we do not make a clean break with the preceding discussion. The Biblical studies reveal the dominant question: What is the language of faith? The purpose of this review, however, is not to analyze the field of Biblical studies in general but to assess …

During recent years the Christian church has been living with a collective sense of guilt which has been sapping its spiritual vitality. Voices are raised in the church which assume full responsibility for the plight of modern man and which castigate the church because it has not been "relevant." The racial crisis, the rising rate of alcoholism, declining standards of public and private morality, deterioration of family life-for these and a thousand other problems the church has been urged to accept at least partial responsibility. The church has frequently forgotten to offer the message of God's forgiveness to itself. The …

Opportunities In The Field Of Bible Translating, Eugene A. Nida Jun 1963

Opportunities In The Field Of Bible Translating, Eugene A. Nida

Concordia Theological Monthly

Ever since World War II an increasingly larger number of persons have become interested in and concerned for the field of Bible translating; the strategy of the printed page and the crucial necessity of wider distribution of the Scriptures have forced Christians to pay greater attention to the translation and revision of the Holy Scriptures. In our rapidly shrinking world, those with even a limited knowledge of the problems of communication on the mission field, have not failed to be impressed with the significant contribution which can be made by the relatively new emphases on structural linguistics and cultural anthropology. …

Developing A Ministry On Mission Fields In The Light Of The New Testament Concepts Of Church And Ministry, Maynard Dorow May 1963

Developing A Ministry On Mission Fields In The Light Of The New Testament Concepts Of Church And Ministry, Maynard Dorow

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study concerns the ministry of the church. To phrase the question in this way already demonstrates that ministry cannot be understood by itself but that it is to be studied in the context of the church. When we look at ministry in the New Testament we find that it is always involved with serving the purposes of the church. In this chapter, therefore, we will set forth in brief outline the concept of the church as presented in the New Testament in order that our study of ministry might be seen in proper perspective.

Investment For Eternity A Study Of Luke 16:1-13, Richard R. Caemmerer Feb 1963

Investment For Eternity A Study Of Luke 16:1-13, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Pastors are sometimes dismayed at the multiplicity of their duties. The burden lies not in their number but in the difficulty with which many of them seem to relate to the ministry of the Word and the one thing needful. The task which threatens this relevance most seriously is the fostering of Christian giving, or as it is called secularly, fund raising. The effort to supply Christian motivation through familiar terms like "stewardship" and "liberality" becomes wearing to pastors and people the kingdom of God, or of the Holy Spirit alike. Yet the need of "raising money" does not slacken.

The Devotional Use Of The Bible, James G. Manz Jul 1962

The Devotional Use Of The Bible, James G. Manz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Our topic suggests that there is another use of the Holy Bible. This is the study of Holy Scripture which is traditionally associated with the discipline of theological seminaries and the work of Biblical scholars and ministers. Its technical term is exegesis and has as its task to get out of the sacred text what God put into it. To achieve its purpose an exegetical study of Scripture involves knowledge of the ancient tongues. Martin Luther had a high regard for that language study which had as its aim the understanding of the meaning of the Scripture. He said, "As …

He Who Came By Water And By Blood - A Summary And Critique Of The Majo Interpretations Of 1 John 5:6, F Peter Brinkman

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It has been said that 1 John 5:6 is "the most perplexing passage in the Epistle and one of the most perplexing in the New Testament." It is perplexing, if for no other reason, for the variety of interpretations that have been offered. This variety, in turn, hinges on many factors beyond the text itself.

The Doctrine Of Christian Cross-Bearing In The New Testament, Carl Lutz Jun 1960

The Doctrine Of Christian Cross-Bearing In The New Testament, Carl Lutz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

He suffers, he witnesses suffering all around him, and yet he is at a loss to define it. In church he hears a definition, but in daily life the Christian's “cross” does not seem to be any different from the afflictions experienced by the godless. The purpose of this study shall be to attempt to clarify the situation and as far as possible to define the limits and contents of the Christian's "cross."

Structuring A Youth-To-Youth Visitation Program, Marvin Bergman Jun 1959

Structuring A Youth-To-Youth Visitation Program, Marvin Bergman

Master of Divinity Thesis

This interest in youth evangelism is due to several factors. The number of unchurched youth in the United States is a factor. Though it is difficult to obtain reliable figures on the youth population, Ellis reports that the difference between the number of youth enrolled in church activities and the youth population of America amounts to 19,328,000 teen-agers. This means that three out of four young people are outside the church.

The Biblical Teaching Of The Visio Dei- A General Overview Of Its Scope And Its Implications For The Christian, Richard William Baldes

Bachelor of Divinity

While Greek and similar systems oftheo1ogy are fascinating, we want to examine briefly some that were a bit more connected and invo1ved with Christianity, and note their stress or lack of stress on the visio Dei. These will not necessarily be contemporary with New Testament times nor is it the purpose of this examination to revea1 their influence on, or their being influenced by the Christian teaching. The purpose of this examination is merely to give the reader an idea of the various strains of thought that were rampant in the people to whom the Christian teaching of the visio …

A Study Of Hebrews 6:4-8, Herbert H. Hohenstein Jun 1956

A Study Of Hebrews 6:4-8, Herbert H. Hohenstein

Concordia Theological Monthly

Any effort to determine the relationship of this passage to the entire epistle must necessarily consider both the occasion and the purpose of the letter. There is one outstanding theme, the finality and perfection of the Christian religion. Christ, God's Son, has come down to give the climactic and clearest revelation of the God in whose bosom He has lain and to redeem mankind to this God whom He reveals. He who would hear this final Word of God must hear it in the Son. Not to listen is to die. Yes, to grow cold in attention to that Word …

The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg Aug 1955

The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

Archaeology is, furthermore, of great value because it relates exegesis to historical facts. Christianity is a historical religion, based upon events and experiences which transpired in history. Allegorical and symbolical interpretations often ignore the historical background of the Christian religion and lead to aberrations in religious thought. While the New Testament as a supernatural revelation harbors many elements transcending historical verification, it does nevertheless contain much material which can be determined by historical study. Thus Dana asserts: "There is no feature of the process of interpretation more important than the reconstruction of the historical situation out of which a given …

The pastor, the missionary, the parochial school teacher, the Sunday school and weekday school teachers, the Christian youth leaders, and others use the Bible in their respective fields of labor in the Lord's vineyard. If these Christian workers and leaders are to fulfill the intention of the divinely appointed ministry of reconciliation and accomplish the perfecting of the saints through the Word of Truth, a correct and adequate understanding of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, together with their proper application, is essential. The explanation and the application of the Word of God must rest upon a sound and self …

The Spanish Erasmian Movement Of The Sixteenth Century, Hector Lazos Jun 1955

The Spanish Erasmian Movement Of The Sixteenth Century, Hector Lazos

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to familiarize the readers, at least in part, with the Spanish Erasmian movement of the sixteenth century. Lutheran historical research has given much attention and study to the historical events of the sixteenth century. But when Lutheran historians study one of the movements of that century, they are prone to connect it with the German Lutheran Reformation. This might be because, as Lutherans, they are especially interested in seeing the influence that Luther and Lutheranism might have had on the religious conscience of other nations. For this reason the figure of Erasmus has been …
