Characteristics Of Children Attending Asthma Camp In Nevada, Priyank Shetty, Sheniz Moonie, Amy Beaulieu, Christopher M. Aquino
Nevada Journal of Public Health
The purpose of this study was to assess asthma trigger knowledge of camp attendees and the measure of agreement between physician and parent assessment of the children’s asthma severity. This study is based on cross-sectional data provided by the American Lung Association (ALA) and those children participating in summer asthma camps in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada. Fifty-six children participated in the camp in August of 2008. The study results suggest a significant positive correlation between physician and parent assessment of asthma severity. With increasing asthma severity there was a relative increase in the number of school days missed among …

This secondary data analysis used data mining methods to develop predictive models of child risk for distress during a healthcare procedure. Data used came from a study that predicted factors associated with children's responses to an intravenous catheter insertion while parents provided distraction coaching. From the 255 items used in the primary study, 44 predictive items were identified through automatic feature selection and used to build support vector machine regression models. Models were validated using multiple cross-validation tests and by comparing variables identified as explanatory in the traditional versus support vector machine regression. Rule-based approaches were applied to the model …
Standing In The Footprints Of The Contemporary Urban Child: Constructing A Sense Of Place Along The Everyday Urban Routes Children Walk Through Public Space., Jackie Bourke
Doctoral
This study investigates children’s perspectives on how they experience their everyday walks through a city neighbourhood in Dublin, Ireland. Of particular interest in this research are the children’s views on the urban public realm which they traverse daily on their walks to school and various other destinations. Having once been considered the domain of children (Karsten 2005) public space is now socially constructed as adult space (Aitken 2001) and there is a concern that children are disappearing from the city (Ward 1990; Valentine 2004). The focus of this research is the children who still access the public realm regularly, and …

This integrative review aims to describe parents' perspectives on end-of-life care for their children. Fifteen publications from a literature search of the Cochrane databases, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and PSYCHinfo were included in the review. Recurring themes included poor communication/lack of information, strained relationships/inadequate emotional support, parental need to maintain parent/child relationships in life and death, quality of care continues after the death of the child, influence of services/planning on parent/child impacts quality of life, and the difficult decision to terminate life support. No studies were identified that focused on parents' perspectives on the care their child received at the end of …
Debriefing Pediatric End-Of-Life Care Through Personal Reflection, Rebecca L. Meyer
Debriefing Pediatric End-Of-Life Care Through Personal Reflection, Rebecca L. Meyer
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Scope: Education for nursing professionals is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Institute of Medicine about caring for dying children. Improving education and support for nurses is important so they can then educate and support families and patients. Utilizing experiential learning about the types of patients experiencing palliative treatment/therapies and end of life care needs to start in nursing schools so that newly graduating nurses have an increased awareness of how to care for dying children. Didactic education should include ways to facilitate integration of spirituality, culture, communication, and how to establish caring relationships during a difficult …
Put The Town On Notice: School District Liability And Lgbt Bullying Notification Laws, Yariv Pierce
Put The Town On Notice: School District Liability And Lgbt Bullying Notification Laws, Yariv Pierce
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Congress could mitigate the problem of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) student bullying by requiring that teachers and school officials report all bullying incidents to their school district administrators. Many school districts are not aware of the prevalence of LGBT bullying and the extent to which each school protects, or fails to protect, its LGBT students compared to other harassed students. LGBT students often encounter difficulty demonstrating that their school district has a policy or custom of deliberate indifference toward their equal treatment when a school does not equally protect an LGBT student from peer-to-peer bullying because of the …

Conceptualizing Mental Health: A Qualitative Study On Mexican Immigrant Mothers' Definition Of Their Children's Mental Health In New Mexico, Cirila Estela Vasquez Guzman
Sociology ETDs
Parents play a significant role in many areas of their childrens mental health, including understanding the concept, detection, utilization, and treatment options. Despite the importance of parents' role, there is relatively little research in the United States on Latino parents' conceptualization of the term mental health. This study focuses on understanding conceptualization patterns of children's mental health among low-income Mexican immigrant mothers. I utilize the social construction framework to investigate the social nature of the construct mental health. I also engage with the medicalization literature to shed light on the biomedical model's perspective on mental health. Nine focus groups were …
Depression And Anxiety As Predictors Of Obesity In Children, Cortney J. Taylor
Depression And Anxiety As Predictors Of Obesity In Children, Cortney J. Taylor
Open Access Dissertations
Objectives: Prior research indicates that minority youth are more at risk for developing obesity, and that obesity is associated with several health complications as well as significant healthcare costs. The current study addressed the role of symptoms of internalizing disorders with regards to obesity in primarily ethnic minority fourth and fifth graders. In addition, this study was the first to expand upon prior research by determining whether symptoms of depression, anxiety, and social anxiety were associated with BMI at six month follow up in this age group, and whether gender moderated the relationship of internalizing symptoms and BMI. Finally, the …

Planning Phase Of Population-Specific Healthy Lifestyle Program, Mary M. Moore
Planning Phase Of Population-Specific Healthy Lifestyle Program, Mary M. Moore
DNP and Student Works
Childhood overweight and obesity in the United States are significant health problems that have a negative impact on a child's physical and psychological well-being and that generate an extra financial burden for those affected due to health care costs. The current evidence-base for treatment of childhood overweight and obesity recommends a moderate- to high-intensity healthy lifestyle program of physical activity, healthy diet, and behavioral modification. The purpose of this descriptive, multi-method inquiry was to identify the perceived barriers to a healthy lifestyle for a population of elementary school students, ages 6 to 13 years, as the basis for the development …
An Acoustic Analysis Of Elements Of Contrastive Stress Produced By 8 To 10-Year-Old Children, Nicole Michelle Clover
An Acoustic Analysis Of Elements Of Contrastive Stress Produced By 8 To 10-Year-Old Children, Nicole Michelle Clover
Theses and Dissertations
Contrastive stress is an aspect of communication that can be used to highlight information, de-accent redundant information, and create distinctions between new and previously-provided information. Previous research has documented that adult speakers use relative changes in their vocal intensity, fundamental frequency (F0), and duration to mark contrastive stress in a sentence. However, less is understood about how and when children mark contrastive stress in their communication, thus the current study aims to examine a number of acoustic elements of contrastive stress in 8 to 10-year-old children. Speech samples were elicited from 20 children and analyzed to determine if the acoustic …

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Objectives—The effects of sleep-disordered breathing, sleep restriction, dyssomnias, and parasomnias on daytime behavior in children have been previously assessed. However, the potential relationship(s) between sleep hygiene and children’s daytime behavior remain to be explored. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep hygiene and problematic behaviors in non-snoring and habitually snoring children.
Methods—Parents of 100 5- to 8-year-old children who were reported to snore “frequently” to “almost always,” and of 71 age-, gender-, and ethnicity-matched children who were reported to never snore participated in this study. As part of a larger, ongoing study, …
Epic Families: Equipping Parents To Reclaim Their Biblical Mandate While Inspiring Children To Know And Love The God Who Made Them, Marybeth Meltzer
Epic Families: Equipping Parents To Reclaim Their Biblical Mandate While Inspiring Children To Know And Love The God Who Made Them, Marybeth Meltzer
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A review of current literature demonstrates that there is a fundamental problem in the church today: the church has taken on the primary role of discipling children, while many parents have abrogated their biblical mandate as outlined in Deuteronomy 6:6-9. Surveys of parents as well as practical ministry experience confirm that great confusion exists among parents as to the scope of their biblical responsibilities. This project reviews historical perspectives and the present situation in the church and offers guidance to both parents and ministry professionals to help parents reclaim their God-given responsibilities.
The Portrayals Of Family In Advertising: Children's Perspectives, Elise J. Johansen
The Portrayals Of Family In Advertising: Children's Perspectives, Elise J. Johansen
College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Children are exposed to over 25,000 advertisements each year just on television. Research has demonstrated advertising’s effect on children’s preferences and perceptions including gender roles. With the changing structure of family now including diverse family types such as same-sex parents, childfree couples, single-persons, and transracial adoptive families, we do not yet know if advertising is changing with the times and how children perceive these family groups. This study seeks to determine how children perceive family in advertising and its effect on their concept of family through a content analysis of children’s television advertisements and data collection from children in the …
Behavioral And Emotional Correlates Of The Cbcl-Pediatric Bipolar Disorder Profile In Preschool Children, Jiyon Kim
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A growing body of literature indicates that the CBCL-Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (CBCL-PBD) profile identifies a distinctive group of youths at heightened risk for severe psychopathology, comorbidity, and marked impairment in functioning. However, no clear consensus has been reached yet on how best to conceptualize this group of children. Existing studies have focused on diagnostic variables associated with the CBCL-PBD profile in school-age children and adolescents. Thus, little is known about psychosocial correlates of the profile and characteristics of the profile in young children. Therefore, the current study seeks to examine early developmental correlates of preschool children with and without the …

An Exploration Of African Folktales Among The Gullah Community Of The South Carolina Sea Islands : History, Culture, And Identity., Tytianna Nikia Maria Wells Smith 1987-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an exploration of Black cultural space and its influence on the retention, adaptation, and transmission of African folktales during and after the antebellum era. During slavery, the survival of kinship and family helped to create an environment that existed through which African folktales were used to educate and socialize children on South Carolina Sea Islands plantations. This research conducted a literary and cultural analysis of the historical and current function of ten folktales that impart moral lessons and cultural values that encourage children in Gullah communities to appreciate their African heritage and challenge the world in which …
Physical Activity Behaviour Of Paediatric Patients With Type 1 Diabetes, Freya Macmillan, Alison Kirk, Nanette Mutrie
Physical Activity Behaviour Of Paediatric Patients With Type 1 Diabetes, Freya Macmillan, Alison Kirk, Nanette Mutrie
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Type 1 diabetes is a common chronic condition in children and young people and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. Paediatric patients with Type 1 diabetes can have poorer health and overall quality of life than their non-diabetic peers and some studies suggest that they may be less active than their non-diabetic peers. Regular physical activity has many potential health benefits for any young person but can also benefit areas of health specifically important for those with Type 1 diabetes. In addition being regularly active can reduce the risk of developing diabetic complications. Promoting physical activity participation in this population is …

Anxiety Symptoms, Parent Anxiety And Functional Impairment In Pediatric Cardiology Patients With Noncardiac Chest Pain And Benign Cardiac Complaints, Cassandra Jo Mcdonnell
Dissertations
Chest pain is regularly encountered in pediatric medical settings. Because of the popular association of chest pain with coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction adults, it is often frightening for both patients and parents. However, up to 88% of pediatric chest pain patients receive no medical explanation for their pain. Chest discomfort in the absence of medical explanation that is characterized by no more than one typical angina symptom is classified as non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP). This study examined parent anxiety, child anxiety and chest pain related functional impairment in a sample of pediatric patients with NCCP in comparison to …

Child Sex Abuse In Institutional Settings: What Is Next, Marci A. Hamilton
Child Sex Abuse In Institutional Settings: What Is Next, Marci A. Hamilton
Articles
Reinforcing taboos have kept the topic of child sex abuse in institutions from public discussion in the United States until recently. Those walls are now crumbling, and we are entering an era of better public information and discourse, which, in turn, is fueling a movement for the improvement of the legal system's protection of children. In this Article, I will examine the taboos and the impact of their fall, and then chart the legal reforms that are flowing from their downfall.
Is Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy A Causal Environmental Risk Factor For Adolescent Antisocial Behavior? Testing Etiological Theories And Assumptions, Brian M. D'Onofrio, Carol A. Van Hulle, Jackson A. Goodnight, Paul J. Rathouz, Benjamin B. Lahey
Is Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy A Causal Environmental Risk Factor For Adolescent Antisocial Behavior? Testing Etiological Theories And Assumptions, Brian M. D'Onofrio, Carol A. Van Hulle, Jackson A. Goodnight, Paul J. Rathouz, Benjamin B. Lahey
Psychology Faculty Publications
Background—Although many studies indicate that maternal smoking during pregnancy (SDP) is correlated with later offspring antisocial behavior (ASB), recent quasi-experimental studies suggest that background familial factors confound the association. The present study sought to test alternative etiological hypotheses using multiple indices of adolescent ASB, comparing differentially exposed siblings, and testing assumptions in the sibling-comparison design.
Tailoring Snack Food Package Design To Children As A Health Communication Strategy, Sunghyun R. Kang, Debra Satterfield, Joanne Lasrado, Richard Gonzalez, Nora Ladjahasan, Gregory Welk, Cynthia Wiley
Tailoring Snack Food Package Design To Children As A Health Communication Strategy, Sunghyun R. Kang, Debra Satterfield, Joanne Lasrado, Richard Gonzalez, Nora Ladjahasan, Gregory Welk, Cynthia Wiley
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The excess consumption of unhealthy snack foods by children and young adults has been shown to increase their rate of development of obesity, as well as decrease their likelihood of meeting current U.S. nutritional recommendations. Nutritional messages on snack food product labels have been traditionally evaluated almost exclusively from the perspective of the verbal content of the message. While such messages are important for communicating factual information, they do not address the potential significance of the visual qualities of that message in appropriately communicating with the target audience. The visual properties of the nutritional messages are critical in their ability …
Analysis Of Bar Deformation Under Sternum Forces During Surgical Correction Of Pectus Excavatum In Children, Rohit N. Nikam
Analysis Of Bar Deformation Under Sternum Forces During Surgical Correction Of Pectus Excavatum In Children, Rohit N. Nikam
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Pectus excavatum (PE) also known as sunken or funnel chest is the most common chest wall deformity and affects 1 in every 1,000 children. In PE patients, the middle lower portion of the sternum is depressed producing concave appearance of the anterior part of the chest wall. This problem can be corrected with minimally invasive surgery developed by Dr. Donald Nuss in 1986. A specially made steel bar is implanted to lift the sternum to its normal position. This technique has been modified several times to improve safety and effectiveness of the bar placement and removal. One of the significant …
The Mediating Role Of Emotion Regulation In The Relations Of Between Somatization And Internalizing Disorders In Children, Priscilla A. Khuanghlawn
The Mediating Role Of Emotion Regulation In The Relations Of Between Somatization And Internalizing Disorders In Children, Priscilla A. Khuanghlawn
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Somatic symptoms are a common experience of childhood and research suggests that specific populations, including girls and children who are African-American, may be more likely to experience and report somatic complaints. Although seen in developmentally typical populations, somatic symptoms are also often strongly linked with general psychopathology, especially internalizing disorders. The etiology of somatic symptoms is unclear, with the current literature suggesting various contributing causes. One such contributing factor includes emotional factors such as the management of emotional arousal through emotion inhibition, coping, and dysregulation. Using an African-American sample of 136 elementary school-aged children (47% boys) and their parents (86% …
Deconstructing Children's Expectations For Psychotherapy: Understanding How Parents Prepare Their Children For Mental Health Treatment, Heather Nix
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Little research has investigated the effects of stigma on child psychotherapy. Because parents are a primary factor in determining whether children receive psychotherapy and how therapy progresses, understanding how parental perceptions of psychopathology and psychotherapy are associated with children’s mental health treatment seems to be an important step in investigating how stigma impacts child psychotherapy. Researchers have not closely examined, however, how parents might influence children’s experiences of psychotherapy. To address this topic, the current study examined how parents’ views of psychotherapy were related to how they prepared their children for psychotherapy and how this preparation was related to children’s …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
In an unprecedented effort to address the epidemic of diabetes in tribal communities, the Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools project brought together a group of individuals from eight tribal colleges and three federal agencies to develop a diabetes prevention curriculum for American Indian and Alaska Native school children. The curriculum incorporates Western and Native science with culturally responsive teaching techniques. Both the project and its evaluation process have reached beyond conventional bounds to acknowledge fundamental issues of tribal culture, history and health and the integration of science, culture, and community. This article will discuss the challenges and rewards of the …
Assets For Independence: Asset Building For And By Young People, Sondra G. Beverly
Assets For Independence: Asset Building For And By Young People, Sondra G. Beverly
Center for Social Development Research
Young people need assets to make the transition to adulthood. This article summarizes the four preceding articles on youth and saving, identifies policy and program implications, and suggests directions for future research. It is clear that saving is difficult for many people and throughout the life course. Efforts to help young people accumulate assets might encourage saving by parents, encourage saving by youth, or provide subsidies. The latter strategy is most likely to reduce inequities associated with socioeconomic status. These strategies do not have to be pursued in isolation, and ongoing conversations across disciplines and between scholars and practitioners could …
