The Effects Of Mild Hearing Loss On Academic Performance Among Elementary School Age Children, Donna White Massine May 1990

The Effects Of Mild Hearing Loss On Academic Performance Among Elementary School Age Children, Donna White Massine

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research endeavoring to determine the effect of a mild sensorineural hearing-impairment on academic performance has resulted in conflicting conclusions. To date, there has been limited research on the educational implications of a mild hearing loss in the elementary grades but very few studies have utilized a normal-hearing control group to compare with the hearing-impaired and none have examined whether a relationship exists beyond sixth grade. This study measured the academic performance of mildly hearing-impaired children by comparing them with their normal-hearing counterparts. The achievement scores of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills from twelve pairs of children in the 5th …

Encouraging Navajo Parents' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Wanda Benale May 1990

Encouraging Navajo Parents' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Wanda Benale

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The transition of Navajo Indian children from boarding schools to public schools has brought about the challenge of involving parents in their children's education. These people have previously been accustomed to having the education of their children left to the distant schools, with little opportunity for parental involvement. As a consequence, it is often difficult to get these parents to accept the schools' invitations to participate in conferences and other activities when parental involvement is important.

This study reviewed all of the reports that could be found of programs involving Indians and non-Indian parents in their children's education. These programs …

Development Of A Generic Model Aimed At Building Self-Love Among Para-Alcoholic Native American Children, Claralynn Merino May 1990

Development Of A Generic Model Aimed At Building Self-Love Among Para-Alcoholic Native American Children, Claralynn Merino

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes an alternative program for building self-love among Native American para-alcoholic, elementary school age children. There is a need to increase awareness of the para- alcoholic behaviors existing in young Native American students. The epidemic of alcoholism on the reservation affects all the children and increases the need for nurturing and love. In a culture where touch is limited, prevention strategies are important. The dysfunctional home and community environment should not interfere in a child's ability to learn. Co-dependent children deal daily with their public self and real self, and need outlets to relieve their tensions. The Love …

Stepparents, Biologic Parents, And The Law's Perception Of 'Family' After Divorce, David L. Chambers

Book Chapters

The drama of divorce always contains at least two characters, a woman and a man, and often a third, a child born to the woman and the man. If you have read the other chapters of this book, you have rarely encountered any of the other persons who may be affected by a divorce, such as the children of either person from a prior marriage, or later spouses or partners of either party, or later born children of either party-all the persons who are or become stepchildren or stepparents. You have not encountered them because, in this country, with minor …

Part I of this Note describes the court's use of temporary custody orders to determine whether an established custodial environment exists. Part II sets forth the Model Statute, which integrates current case law into statutory language designed specifically for temporary custody situations. Part II also analyzes each section of …

(1990) Fools, Young Children, And Philosophy, David K. Kennedy Jan 1990

(1990) Fools, Young Children, And Philosophy, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

Like the fool for the king, the modern child of the Romantics represents for the adult original human nature in all its ambiguity and ambivalence. The child's nature, like the fool's, is both fallen and innocent, amoral and beyond morality and what is even more confusing, alternately one or the other. The child's unsocialized presence reveals and exposes the imperfections of the socialized world of adult artifice and hypocrisy. The child's very simplicity seems perverse by reason of the corruption of the adults who so judge him or her. The child is a question put to the adult world, a …

Children's Attitudes Toward Play: An Investigation Of Their Context Specificity And Relationship To Organized Sport Experiences, Donald L. Greer, Michael J. Stewart Sep 1989

Children's Attitudes Toward Play: An Investigation Of Their Context Specificity And Relationship To Organized Sport Experiences, Donald L. Greer, Michael J. Stewart

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Beginning with the work of Webb (1969), a line of research has developed attempting to explain how the socialization experiences of children and adolescents help transform their attitudes toward play. In Webb's view, the transformation to a state of being "professionalized" has occurred when an emphasis on equity and fairness, which are pronounced at earlier stages of development, has been replaced by a focus on winning. The body of research that hasdeveloped from this original formulation has consistently identified age and gender differences (Loy , Birrell, & Rose, 1976; Maloney & Petrie, 1972; Mantel & VanderVelden, 1971) in play attitudes, …

The Effectiveness Of Constant Versus Rotating Buddy Dyads On The Social Interactions Of Handicapped Preschoolers, Connie Faye Nelke May 1989

The Effectiveness Of Constant Versus Rotating Buddy Dyads On The Social Interactions Of Handicapped Preschoolers, Connie Faye Nelke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Due to the passage of Public Law 94-142 (1975), widespread attempts have been made to integrate children who have handicaps into settings with their nonhandicapped peers. Although integrated settings may provide the opportunity for social interaction to occur between children with and without handicaps, often interaction does not occur. In order to address the issue of how to best facilitate appropriate interactions in integrated settings, specialized programs such as the FMS buddy system (Quintero, Phelps, Striefel, & Killoran, 1987) have been developed to promote positive social interactions between children with and without handicaps.

One important aspect programs such as the …

Hypothesis For Prediction Of Stimulant Drug Effectiveness Utilizing Sensory Integrative Diagnostic Methods, Judith Giencke Kimball Jun 1988

Hypothesis For Prediction Of Stimulant Drug Effectiveness Utilizing Sensory Integrative Diagnostic Methods, Judith Giencke Kimball

Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

Despite extensive research, there has been no way to predict before drug administration which children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will respond to medication intended to calm them. A drug trial is the current method used. This paper discusses the action of stimulant medications and presents a hypothesis as to why they work on some children and not others. Sensory integration theory, particularly on vestibular system measures, that involves differential diagnosis of certain types of ADHD children, is used to explain why some children respond to stimulant medications.
