The Simultaneous Presentation Procedure: Use In Selecting Reinforcers For Behavioral Intervention, Daniel Houlihan, Robert Bates-Purple, Robert N. Jones, Howard N. Sloane
The Simultaneous Presentation Procedure: Use In Selecting Reinforcers For Behavioral Intervention, Daniel Houlihan, Robert Bates-Purple, Robert N. Jones, Howard N. Sloane
Psychology Department Publications
Used a simultaneous presentation procedure to select quality reinforcers for 2 identical twin boys (aged 4 yrs) in a summer school program, who were developmentally delayed, noncompliant, and mute. Use of the simultaneous presentation procedure quickly and efficiently helped determine each boy's preferred reinforcer. This preferred reinforcer was then used in an instructional task. For both Ss, the percentage of compliance increased over baseline levels during both the simultaneous presentation and preferred reinforcer phases. However, increased compliance was associated almost exclusively with the selection of each S's preferred reinforcer. The simultaneous presentation procedure may enable trainers to use positive reinforcement …
Religion And Child Custody, Carl E. Schneider
Religion And Child Custody, Carl E. Schneider
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
In this Essay, I want to reflect on some problems at the intersection of religion, law, and the family. Specifically, I will explore the ways courts may consider a parent's religiously motivated behavior in making decisions about the custody of children. More precisely still, I will ask two questions. First, may a court refuse to award custody because of a parent's religiously motivated behavior in a dispute between a natural mother and a natural father? Second, when should a court agree to resolve a dispute between divorced parents over the religious upbringing of their children? These are topics of quiet …
Crisis Intervention: An Evaluation Of Services Provided To Families Of Sexually Abused Children In Davis County, Utah, Karen Louise Letts
Crisis Intervention: An Evaluation Of Services Provided To Families Of Sexually Abused Children In Davis County, Utah, Karen Louise Letts
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study assessed the extent to which victim families are or are not helped by the support services in Davis County, Utah. A sample of 29 mothers of sexually abused children indicated that existing intervention services were greatly underutilized and hard to locate. Seventeen of these mothers reported that they were either ignored by their caseworkers or, conversely, told not to get counseling until their case was adjudicated because of the investigator's belief that any exposure to therapy might erode the child's credibility as a witness. Only 48% of the families were informed of their Victim Rights as required by …

Reinforcement Of Compliance With Postitive And Negative Commands And Its Effect On Inappropriate Behavior In Children, Mary Jacobs Zielinski, Howard Levine, Daniel Houlihan
Psychology Department Publications
This study examined reinforcement of compliance with positive (''do'') and negative ("don't") commands, along with its effects on inappropriate behavior in children. The design of the study was A-B· A-C-B-C counterbalanced across two subjects. In both subjects, reinforcement of compliance to .. do" commands resulted in increased compliance to this type of command. Similarly, reinforcement of compliance with "don't" commands resulted in increased compliance to "don't" commands. In addition, a tendency for compliance with the reinforced type of command to generalize to the nonreinforced type was observed in some phases. Response covariation was.also observed in some phases. Response covariation was …
Direct And Indirect Testing Of Memory In Children With Learning Disabilities, Janette L. Sodoro
Direct And Indirect Testing Of Memory In Children With Learning Disabilities, Janette L. Sodoro
Student Work
This study examined the relation between performance on direct and indirect measures of memory for pictures and words in children with learning disabilities. Recognition memory provided the direct measure and the magnitude of naming facilitation provided the indirect measure. Fourth grade learning disabled and nonlearning disabled children were asked to study a mixed list of pictures and words. A naming/recognition task was administered immediately following the study phase, as well as the following day. In addition, source memory was measured immediately following each recognition decision. For each item recognized as "old", subjects were required to render a decision about the …
The Channelling Function In Family Law, Carl E. Schneider
The Channelling Function In Family Law, Carl E. Schneider
Articles
On an occasion such as this, we are called to step back from our daily work to seek what Justice Holmes called a "liberal view" of our subject. Today, I propose to do so by exploring a function of family law that I believe is basic, that underlies much of family law, that resonates with the deepest purposes of culture but that is rarely addressed expressly-namely, what I call the "channelling function." As I will soon explain at length, in the channelling function the law recruits, builds, shapes, sustains; and promotes social institutions. My exploration of this topic will have …

Minor Changes: Emancipating Children In Modem Times, Carol Sanger, Eleanor Willemsen
Minor Changes: Emancipating Children In Modem Times, Carol Sanger, Eleanor Willemsen
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Article reports on the use of still another mechanism for removing children in conflict with their parents: statutory emancipation, the process by which minors attain legal adulthood before reaching the age of majority. Statutorily emancipated minors can sign binding contracts, own property, keep their earnings, and disobey their parents. Although under eighteen, they are "considered as being over the age of majority" in most of their dealings with parents and third parties. Thus, while emancipated minors can sign contracts and stay out late, their adult status also means that their parents are no longer responsible for the minors' support. …
Children And Their Art, Stacey Nicol
Children And Their Art, Stacey Nicol
Honors Capstones
Art is an important facet of children's development and can aid disturbed children in the form of therapy, if needed. It is necessary to consider the development of art in normal young children before the topic of art therapy can be broached. The importance of art and the different stages of art that children go through are touched upon in the following pages to provide necessary background information. The last section of this paper discusses the role of art therapy by defining art therapy and looking at how evaluations based on art should be made. The purpose of this paper …

Creating Informal Play Opportunities: Are Parents' And Preschoolers' Initiations Related To Children's Competence With Peers?, Gary W. Ladd, Craig H. Hart
Faculty Publications
Preschoolers' social competence may depend on the frequency with which informal play activities are initiated by parents', children, and playmates. In this study, measures ofchildren's peer relations in informal and school contexts and the frequency of parents', children's, and peers' play initiations were obtained with 83 preschool children and their families on 2 occasions. Frequent parent initiations were associated with higher levels of prosocial behavior, lower levels of nonsocial behavior and, among boys, greater peer acceptance in preschool. Children who were more initiating of informal peer contacts displayed less anxious behavior in school and were better liked by their classmates. …

The Probative Weight Of The "Mainstreaming" Requirement Under The Eha, Linda S. Abrahamson
The Probative Weight Of The "Mainstreaming" Requirement Under The Eha, Linda S. Abrahamson
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This comment examines the case law which has developed around the "mainstreaming" provision of the EHA. It focuses on the fact that placement decisions made by school districts are nearly always upheld, regardless of the desires of parents or handicapped students. The author contends that this inequity does not properly respect the role of parents under the EHA, as advocates for their handicapped children. The author concludes by developing a factor test to determine the appropriate placement for a handicapped student when the degree of mainstreaming is the only issue before a reviewing court.

Body Image Dissatisfaction And Eating Behavior In Survivors Of Child Sex Abuse, Ellen S. Dorfman
Theses
A review of the literature suggests a relationship between child sexual abuse and the development of eating disorders in female subjects . Additionally, body image dissatisfaction and distortion are well documented among eating disordered individuals and women in general. This study found a relationship between body image dissatisfaction and some eating disordered behaviors . Women who are in out-patient therapy for treatment of child sexual abuse were surveyed. Secretiveness about the sexual abuse at the time of the abuse was compared to both body image dissatisfaction and eating disorder attitudes and behaviors . Secretiveness was significantly related to body image …

Parent Indicators Of Quality Care In Out Of School Hours Care In Western Australia, Vicki Banham, Allison Picton-King
Parent Indicators Of Quality Care In Out Of School Hours Care In Western Australia, Vicki Banham, Allison Picton-King
Research outputs pre 2011
An Investigation into the identification of indicators of quality care for outside school hours was undertaken.
Data was derived from a survey of 252 parents with children currently attending after school care in W.A., and compared with the indicators of quality developed by the Joint Review of the Commonwealth Department of Community Services and Commonwealth Public Service Board on Outside School Hours Care, Vacation Care and Adventure Playgrounds. Although parents identified specific indicators of quality care, the findings were consistent with those of the Review.
Comparing these findings with the extensive current research on pre-school care indicators of quality, suggested …

(1991) The Community Of Inquiry And Educational Structure., David K. Kennedy
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
Young people engaged in philosophical dialogue sometimes exhibit resistance to the program, expressed in boredom, impatience, and sometimes even rejection. My theory is that, in addition to a lot of reasons like the ones just cited, the problem has to do with the way schools and classrooms are structured, which in turn is the result of an overall educational model--what Matthew Lipman has referred to as "tribal" or "information-acquisition" education. I want to argue that there is a "new" educational model—in fact it is already about 200 years old—and that it has the strucmral characteristics which provide place for what …

Amusement Centres And Social Risk : A Survey Into The Social Risks That Amusement Centres Pose For Young People Who Use Them, Howard Sercombe
Research outputs pre 2011
This report summarises the indings of a survey amongst respondents connected with the amusement and leisure centre industry in the inner city area of Perth in April 1988.
The survey canvassed perception of the social composition of users of the amusement centres and the pattern of centre usage. It asked questions concerning a number of areas of social concern that are sometimes raised in connection with centres, and canvassed opinion regarding the need for regulation or licensing of centres.
Briefly, the survey found that:
There is no evidence to suggest that amusement centres are in any way connected with drug …

Helping Dysfunctional Recovering Drug-Addicted Mothers To Build Healthy Families By Enhancing Parenting Skills And Providing Opportunities For Bonding, Nan Kelly Wilson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to enhance the parenting skills of drug-addicted recovering women and to give opportunities for successful family experiences in a half-way house setting.
The writer developed a curriculum, led weekly group meetings, arranged for guest speakers, assisted mothers with individual problems, and administered an evaluation. The Walker Problem Behavior Identification Checklist (1983) and the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting Workshop (Dinkmeyer & McKay, 1989) were used.
Results were positive. Recovering mothers completed parenting course activities, participated in weekly family experiences to develop bonding, and reported feelings of higher value as parents. Children’s scores on the Walker Problem …

Plans, Protections, And Professional Intervention: Innovations In Divorce Custody Reform And The Role Of Legal Professionals, Jane W. Ellis
Plans, Protections, And Professional Intervention: Innovations In Divorce Custody Reform And The Role Of Legal Professionals, Jane W. Ellis
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Beginning with an overview of the "law in theory" in Part II, this Article describes the Parenting Act's political origins and the aspirations on which the Act was based. These aspirations reflect common contemporary national themes and are based on common (and often unexamined) assumptions about the purposes of custody law and, indeed, the nature and capacity of law itself. They are described in conjunction with major theoretical arguments about custody reform. Part II then sets out the specific regulations embodying the drafters' goals. The Article next looks at this ambitious new "law in practice" in Part III. It describes …

The Relationship Between Raw Scores On The Kaufman Assessment Battery For Children And School Attendance For Sioux Children Ages 8-12, Mike Cummings
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A study was conducted to examine one aspect of construct validity for the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC). Forty-eight Sioux children at five age levels (8 to 12.5) were used in this study. Relying on theories of child development, most tests of mental abilities have been constructed so that raw scores will increase with age. Pearson r correlation coefficients between age and raw scores were calculated across five age levels for this sample of Sioux children. The Simultaneous-, Sequential-, and Achievement-scale raw scores significantly correlate with age at the .05 level for a one-tailed test of significance. Number Recall …
