Interdisciplinary Clinical Teaching Of Child Welfare Practice To Law And Social Work Students When World Views Collide, Kathleen Coulborn Faller, Frank E. Vandervort
Articles
Because child welfare cases in the world of professional practice require interdisciplinary collaboration, it would seem to follow that graduate students, who will become child welfare professionals, should be trained together, both in the classroom and in clinical settings. However, the implementation of interdisciplinary training is far from straightforward. In this Article, we focus on law and social work students. First, we describe the roles of lawyers and social worker in child welfare work. Next we argue that interdisciplinary classroom teaching is easier than clinical teaching, proposing a series of topics to be covered in an interdisciplinary course. Finally, we …

Family Group Conferencing In Child Welfare: Responsive And Regulatory Interfaces, Joan Pennell
Family Group Conferencing In Child Welfare: Responsive And Regulatory Interfaces, Joan Pennell
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
A regulatory approach compels the child welfare worker to make decisions according to set procedures and prevents responding flexibly to families. Differential response is a way that child welfare is departing from legal formalism. One means is convening a family group conference (FGC) to develop a plan. John Braithwaite's regulatory pyramid assists in concep- tualizing differential response. This article reports a factor analysis of data on achievement of FGC objectives to elaborate three interfaces for fostering responsive regulation. Each interface keeps the family group at the center of planning while firmly maintaining their connections with community and government programs.

Developing A Comprehensive System Of Care For Children In Placement With Relatives: Collaboration, Organizational Culture And Family Roles In Local Service Development, Elan Welter Lewis
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to support the development of a comprehensive system of care for grandparents and other relatives raising children, noncustodial parents, and children in out of home placement. The family constellation was changing in the community were the applied dissertation was implemented. Many children were in out of home placement with relative caregivers; there were few resources and no formal system of care designed to respond to the needs of these at risk families. This left many grandparents and other relative caregivers, children, and noncustodial parents without support or access to services.
The problem identified to be …
Effective Use Of Multimodal Interventions With Adolescents In Residential Care, Brian J. Hawkins
Effective Use Of Multimodal Interventions With Adolescents In Residential Care, Brian J. Hawkins
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was written to study the use and effectiveness of behavioral intervention in residential child care facilities, serving adolescents from backgrounds of abuse and neglect. Direct care workers in these out-of-home settings have experienced significant difficulties in managing negative behaviors exhibited by adolescents in care. It was found that direct-care workers were insufficiently trained and lacked understanding in resident behavior, leading to frustration and failure in providing appropriate and effective behavior interventions.
The writer developed a training curriculum to instruct direct-care and social-service staff in multiple methods of management and intervention in negative, unproductive behaviors. Understanding behavior development, …

A Framework For Quality Assurance In Child Welfare, Mary O'Brien, Peter Watson
Faculty, Staff, and Alumni Books
This guide outlines a framework for implementing quality assurance programs for child welfare services. The components are based on federal requirements, national standards, and child welfare research. Five steps are described: select outcomes and standards, integrate quality assurance goals and procedures throughout the agency, collect data about outcomes, analyze data, and improve systems as indicated by evaluation findings. Specific topics include the role of the quality assurance system in the Child and Family Services Review process, communication of quality assurance practices, and staff participation in analysis. The manual describes each step of the quality assurance system and reviews the tasks.

Vicarious Traumatization And Its Impact On The Pennsylvania Child Welfare System, Jo Ann Jankoski
Vicarious Traumatization And Its Impact On The Pennsylvania Child Welfare System, Jo Ann Jankoski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although many studies have addressed burnout, secondary trauma, and job satisfaction among child welfare workers throughout the United States, a review of the current and available literature revealed limited research addressing the impact of vicarious trauma and its relationship to worker retention, recruitment, and job satisfaction. This study was conducted within the context of traumatology theory and examined how vicarious trauma affects child welfare workers and to what degree vicarious trauma has had an impact on their collective community, the child welfare system. The research question that guided this study was: How does vicarious trauma affect child welfare workers and …
