"Leadership On Steroids" Inpatient Nurse Managers' Experiences And Roles During Covid-19, Sue Bookey-Bassett, Nancy Purdy Mar 2021

"Leadership On Steroids" Inpatient Nurse Managers' Experiences And Roles During Covid-19, Sue Bookey-Bassett, Nancy Purdy

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

This paper describes leadership at one Canadian academic health sciences centre where we sought to understand how the pandemic impacted nurse managers' roles, strategies that were used to navigate organizational and patient care challenges, supports that were available and overall key learnings about these leadership roles during a pandemic. This paper presents novel findings regarding the leadership experiences and roles of inpatient nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. To date most studies report how COVID-19 has impacted front-line staff. This work highlights the key roles that managers play in leading "behind the scenes" to support their staff and patients.

Leadership Crisis Communication During The Pandemic Of 2020, Daryl Watkins, Steven Walker Mar 2021

Leadership Crisis Communication During The Pandemic Of 2020, Daryl Watkins, Steven Walker

Publications

COVID-19 provided a unique opportunity to examine leadership communication strategies during an extended crisis. The authors used political discourse analysis to review the crisis communication of President Donald Trump and seven U.S. governors using the U.S. Center for Disease Control crisis communication framework. The findings demonstrated that U.S. governors typically used effective communication strategies during their press briefings. President Trump often did not use effective crisis communication. The governors’ crisis communication styles were consistent with the CDC’s guidelines. The governors’ communication styles demonstrate that they are “in the arena,” while President Trump has attempted to remove himself from the arena.

Did Spending Cuts During The Great Recession Really Cause Student Outcomes To Decline?, Jessica Goldstein, Josh B. Mcgee

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Jackson, Wigger, and Xiong (2020a, JWX) provide evidence that education spending reductions following the Great Recession had widespread negative impacts on student achievement and attainment. This paper describes our process of duplicating JWX and highlights a variety of tests we employ to investigate the nature and robustness of the relationship between school spending reductions and student outcomes. Though per-pupil expenditures undoubtedly shifted downward due to the Great Recession, contrary to JWX, our findings indicate there is not a clear and compelling story about the impact of those reductions on student achievement. Moreover, we find that the relationship between K-12 spending …

The Battle For Covid-19 Vaccines Highlights The Need For A New Global Governance Mechanism, Anna Mia Ekström, Camilla Berggren, Göran Tomson, Lawrence O. Gostin, Peter Friberg, Ole Petter Ottersen

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

To the Editor—Although the rapid development of several vaccines against COVID-19 is an unparalleled scientific accomplishment, one made possible through the collaboration of researchers, industry and funding bodies, the absence of a system that secures equitable access to vaccines has uncovered deep fissures in the global governance systems for health, as noted in a recent Nature Medicine Editorial.

For example, advance purchase agreements for vaccines against COVID-19 have favored affluent countries, allowing them to secure 150–500% of their predicted needs, while many citizens of low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) will remain unvaccinated until 2024.

Additionally, the power of patent-holders and …

Covid-19 Modifications To A Service-Learning Project Designed To Prepare Special Education Students To Be Effective Participants In Transdisciplinary Collaborations, Kathy R. Doody, Katrina Fulcher-Rood, Pamela Schuetze

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

This research study examined the impact of COVID-19 on university students’ perceptions about the effectiveness of a community-based service-learning project designed to prepare graduate students in special education and undergraduate students in psychology and speech-language pathology to work in transdisciplinary teams in early childhood settings. Students were placed into transdisciplinary teams and assigned to one of two community-based early childhood programs to administer a universal screening tool that assessed young children in several domains. The project was in its sixth year when the country stood still because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The project was re-envisioned, mid-course, to provide an equitable …

Addressing Teacher Shortages In The Covid-19 Landscape: Viewing Teacher Candidates As Assets, Michael S. Rosenberg, Loretta Mason-Williams, Lois Kimmel, Paul T. Sindelar

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

COVID-19 continues to impose dire consequences on all sectors of our public education system. Many students, particularly those from vulnerable populations, are receiving reduced amounts of direct instruction and are experiencing significant losses in learning. At the same time, educator preparation programs (EPPs) are struggling to ensure that teacher candidates have ample opportunities to apply their newly acquired pedagogical skills in high quality clinical placements. In this article we describe and provide exemplars as to how teacher candidates can serve as assets to school districts as they complete their field placements. We also offer specific strategies and practices for EPPs …

Original Antigenic Sin: The Downside Of Immunological Memory And Implications For Covid-19, Eric L Brown, Heather T Essigmann Mar 2021

Original Antigenic Sin: The Downside Of Immunological Memory And Implications For Covid-19, Eric L Brown, Heather T Essigmann

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The concept of original antigenic sin (OAS) was put forth many years ago to explain how humoral memory responses generated against one set of antigens can affect the nature of antibody responses elicited to challenge infections or vaccinations containing a similar but not identical array of antigens. Here, we highlight the link between OAS and the germinal center reaction (GCR), a process unique to activated B cells undergoing somatic hypermutation and class switch recombination. It is the powerful response of activated memory B cells and the accompanying GCR that establish the foundations of OAS. We apply these concepts to the …

A Framework For Managing Innovation In Higher Education: Lessons Learnt From The Uae Ipad Initiative, Kenesha Wilson, Jobila Sy

All Works

Purpose: Managing educational innovation in higher education institutions is a complex process that requires specific strategies based on research and proven frameworks. The aim of this paper was to examine how Bolman and Deal’s (2003) theoretical framework can be used to analyse organisational change processes and to evaluate the progress and outcomes of an educational innovation initiative at a university in the Gulf. This educational innovation involved the use of iPads in curricular practices to enhance pedagogical strategies and student learning outcomes. Design/methodology/approach: An ethnographic case study methodology was used to make an empirical inquiry that investigated data obtained from …
