Health Physics and Diagnostic Sciences Faculty Research

With the continued transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) throughout the world, identification of highly suspected COVID-19 patients remains an urgent priority. In this study, we developed and validated COVID-19 risk scores to identify patients with COVID-19. In this study, for patient-wise analysis, three signatures, including the risk score using radiomic features only, the risk score using clinical factors only, and the risk score combining radiomic features and clinical variables, show an excellent performance in differentiating COVID-19 from other viral-induced pneumonias in the validation set. The intervention is a tiered organizational support program and resilience training to be implemented on a Medical-Surgical floor caring for COVID-19 patients. This research provides knowledge on how resilience and the ICU work environment impacts burnout among nurses working the COVID-19 pandemic. Novel evidence-informed guidance will address the physical, psychological, and organizational needs of ICU nurses as they are faced with challenges related to pandemic nursing. Surveys were collected during the onset of COVID-19 Pandemic, from February to May of 2020. This is the first known study to examine protective factors and burnout among US critical care nurses in the context of COVID-19 and significant for understanding the toll the pandemic is taking on ICU nurses.

Recent social distancing measures have changed how nurses are caring for their own mental wellbeing. With many gyms and yoga studios closed, virtual social networks paired with yoga and mindfulness education have helped nurses normalize their experiences, learn healthy coping skills and find social connection during the COVID pandemic. In recent months nurses have endured not just social isolation due to quarantine measures but also increased work-related stress. Technology has proven to be a powerful tool in creating a virtual community centered on yoga and mindfulness to help support the mental health of nurses during a global pandemic.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has increased the burnout rates experienced by nurses. This project used an evidence-based quality improvement approach to promote patient safety and increase professional well-being. Classes are now virtual. Students have returned home, missing friends and finding studying difficult. Whether a graduate student or an undergrad, they are probably feeling anxious, sad and uncertain. This poster will identify student stresses related to social isolation and ways educators can be proactive in helping students cope. Due to Covid-19 rates, educators are acknowledging that a permanent return to campus is unlikely. Some campuses have chosen to return to on-campus courses, others have not. Campuses are going back online due to increasing Covid-19 numbers. Educators need to be aware of student stresses and be equipped to help.
