The Effects Of Covid-19 On China’S Luxury Retail Market, Shirlysia D. Daniel Apr 2021

The Effects Of Covid-19 On China’S Luxury Retail Market, Shirlysia D. Daniel

Honors College Theses

The Coronavirus outbreak that occurred in 2020 negatively impacted the world globally. China handled the pandemic better than other countries due to their experience with prior virus outbreaks, SARS and MERS. It is important to research how the Coronavirus outbreak affected and is still affecting China’s economy, as it is a leading role in other countries’ economies as well. Before Covid-19, Chinese consumers made up one-third of global spending on luxury goods. Global luxury spending decreased drastically as many were impacted financially, emotionally, and physically. However, China’s success during the pandemic has been predicted to be the largest luxury retail …

Impact Of Covid-19 On Healthcare Labor Market In The United States: Lower Paid Workers Experienced Higher Vulnerability And Slower Recovery, Neeraj Bhandari, Kavita Batra, Soumya Upadhyay, Christopher Cochran

Healthcare Administration and Policy Faculty Research

The resilience of the healthcare industry, often considered recession-proof, is being tested by the COVID-19 induced reductions in physical mobility and restrictions on elective and non-emergent medical procedures. We assess early COVID-19 effects on the dynamics of decline and recovery in healthcare labor markets in the United States. Descriptive analyses with monthly cross-sectional data on unemployment rates, employment, labor market entry/exit, and weekly work hours among healthcare workers in each healthcare industry and occupation, using the Current Population Survey from July 2019−2020 were performed. We found that unemployment rates increased dramatically for all healthcare industries, with the strongest early impacts …

A Crisis Of Globalization: A Review Essay, Matthew Rochat Apr 2021

A Crisis Of Globalization: A Review Essay, Matthew Rochat

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

Ian Bremmer's book Us vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism focuses on the discontents of globalization and draws a link between economic insecurity and tides of political polarization that have swept across states, splintering segments of the population and leaving deep social fractures in their wake. In this review essay, I expand on Bremmer’s argument by incorporating two other recent works of global political economy that shed light on the current state of globalization, The Globalization Paradox: Democracy and the Future of the World Economy by Dani Rodrik and Global Capitalism and the Crisis of Humanity by William Robinson. Based …

Without A Map: An Examination Of District Leadership During The Covid-19 Crisis, Megan E. Welter Phd Apr 2021

Without A Map: An Examination Of District Leadership During The Covid-19 Crisis, Megan E. Welter Phd

Muskie School Dissertations

Achieving coherence and coordination in a complex system like a school district is complicated by the nested layers of the organization. This structure allows for teachers in classrooms and schools in a district to operate autonomously, as their organizational layers insulate those in the center from external demands and mandates. The COVID-19 pandemic represented an external demand that led district leaders to implement a series of situational reforms that affected nearly every aspect of the educational organization.

This qualitative study examines how the experiences and decision-making processes of district, school, and teacher leaders from a single district in Maine during …

Dietetics and Human Nutrition Faculty Publications

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, collaboration among faculty in the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition at the University of Kentucky yielded two, four-week virtual experiential learning opportunities with Cooperative Extension for 19 dietetic interns. Remote experiences focused on development of new programming regarding the role of nutrition in the prevention/management of the most prevalent chronic diseases affecting Kentuckians and translating an existing social marketing program that promotes quality family time through preparation of nutritious, affordable home-cooked meals. Weekly assignments took ~10 hours, included individual and groupwork, and came together to create program packages encompassing commonly used products (e.g., …

Other Specialties

Abstract

The current study evaluated the relationship between social participation and quality of life (QoL) for older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Community-dwelling adults (N = 230) age 65 or older completed an online survey providing demographic data to identify changes in lifestyle routine during the pandemic using the COVID-19 Quality of Life (COV19-QoL) scores. Analyses revealed significant differences in reported lifestyle routines in relation to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and significant differences in COV19-QoL scores across various demographic groups. Results demonstrated the close relationship between social participation and QOL, assisted with identifying individuals at increased risk, and …

Stay At Home: Flight-To-Safety And Home Bias In U.S. Etfs During Covid-19 Pandemic, Hamed Yousefi, Mohammad Najand Apr 2021

Stay At Home: Flight-To-Safety And Home Bias In U.S. Etfs During Covid-19 Pandemic, Hamed Yousefi, Mohammad Najand

College of Business (Strome) Posters

We examine the relations between dollar flows of U.S. traded ETFs with exposure to the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world during the COVID-19 crisis utilizing a Markov Switching Model (MSVAR). We find convincing evidence that investors use ETFs to gain exposure to foreign markets. This study differs from the new stream of research on the effects of COVID-19 on financial markets and investors’ reactions in two major ways. First, we follow the money by using actual dollars of fund flows, whereas previous studies use returns. Second, we investigate the existence of two distinct regimes during this …

Information Communication Technology And Emergency Management Communication: Lessons From The 2020 ‘Hurricane-Pandemic’ Wave, Ren-Neasha Blake, Juita-Elena (Wie) Yusuf

College of Business (Strome) Posters

The coronavirus pandemic [COVID-19] forged new roles, dynamics, and systems across the public administration and policy domain. The hurricane season approached just a few months after the COVID-19 outbreak and necessitated swift emergency management response. The usual planning for the hurricane season grappled with pandemic threats, clouds of fear, and the urgent need for reconfigured strategies. Policy practitioners, academicians, and non-government officials convened to construct and deconstruct cross-sector plans for navigating the hurricane-pandemic wave. These tweaked strategies were necessary for coastal communities like Hampton Roads that are prone to extreme weather events. Information communication technology (ICT) was at the forefront …

Business Law And Lawyering In The Wake Of Covid-19, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

The public arrival of COVID-19 (the novel coronavirus 2019) in the United States in early 2020 brought with it many social, political, and economic dislocations and pressures. These changes and stresses included and fostered adjustments in business law and the work of business lawyers. This article draws attention to these COVID-19 transformations as a socio-legal reflection on business lawyering, the provision of legal services in business settings, and professional responsibility in business law practice. While business law practitioners, like other lawyers, may have been ill-prepared for pandemic lawyering, we have seen them rise to the occasion to provide valuable services, …
