Attitudes And Barriers Toward Covid-19 Vaccination Among People Experiencing Homelessness In Detroit, Mi, Sanjna Ghanshani, Sophie Wittenberg, Richard Bryce
Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have a high risk of exposure to communicable diseases and limited access to health care services and treatment in their communities. Despite the availability of highly effective vaccines against COVID-19, the infection prevention practices and level of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among PEH in Detroit have not been well studied.
Methods: Medical students administered an electronic Qualtrics survey to consented participants during outreach visits to local homeless shelters and encampments organized by Street Medicine Detroit. The questionnaire comprised six topics, including hygiene and masking practices, experience with COVID-19 testing and vaccination, and attitudes toward …

INTRODUCTION:
Due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, healthcare systems were mandated to cancel elective procedures as a public health safety measure. This study aimed to evaluate subsequent rescheduling in relation to patients’ interpreted risks of receiving care and reported discrepancies of the COVID-19 pandemic’s direct impacts on minority populations.
METHODS:
An orthopedic surgery research consortium developed a clinical survey to assess the impact of elective surgery cancellations on patients. Topics included demographics, cancellation sentiments, and rescheduling preferences (“ASAP”, “within 3 months”, “6 months”, “12 months”, or “do not wish to reschedule”). The survey was administered for surgeries cancelled between March 15 …

Healthcare workers (HCWs) and public safety personnel (PSP) across the globe have continued to face ethically and morally challenging situations during the COVID-19 pandemic that increase their risk for the development of moral distress (MD) and moral injury (MI). To date, however, the global circumstances that confer risk for MD and MI in these cohorts have not been systematically explored, nor have the unique circumstances that may exist across countries been explored. Here, we sought to identify and compare, across the globe, potentially morally injurious or distressful events (PMIDEs) in HCWs and PSP during the COVID-19 pandemic. A scoping review …

BACKGROUND: Since March 2020, COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted communities of color within the United States. As schools have shifted from virtual to in-person learning, continual guidance is necessary to understand appropriate interventions to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Weekly testing of students and staff for SARS-CoV-2 within K-12 school setting could provide an additional barrier to school-based transmission, especially within schools unable to implement additional mitigation strategies and/or are in areas of high transmission. This study seeks to understand the role that weekly SARS-CoV-2 testing could play in K-12 schools. In addition, through qualitative interviews and listening sessions, this research hopes to …

EpiVax, Inc., a Rhode Island-based Biotechnology company, develops vaccines that exploit T cell immunity using the innovative iVAX vaccine antigen design platform. The premise of our strategy is the crucial role T cells play in development of protective antibody and cell-mediated immunity in natural infection. Because vaccines aim to recapitulate protective immune responses in infection, a vaccine should effectively harness T cell immunity to be protective. The significance of T cell immunity is underscored by COVID-19. Efficacy trial and real-world COVID-19 vaccine data for different vaccine modalities show a single vaccine dose is as much as 90% effective starting 14 …

Spike glycoprotein (S) and its Receptor Binding Domain region (RBD) are the main targets of neutralizing antibodies during an infection with SARS-CoV-2, the etiologic agent of COVID-19 pandemic viral disease. Thus, they are the chosen antigens for the development of diagnostic kits and vaccines candidates. Furthermore, Virus-like Particles (VLPs) constitute potent immunogens that have been engineered to obtain vaccine candidates through expression of SARS-CoV-2 S, M, E and N proteins. Although it might be a challenging platform, as multiple proteins must be expressed in order to assure VLP budding, they are able to induce stronger immune responses than soluble antigens …

BACKGROUND: Indirect cardiomyocyte damage-related hyperinflammatory response is one of the key mechanisms in COVID-19-induced fulminant myocarditis. In addition to the clinical benefit of using cytokines absorption hemofiltration, the effectiveness of instituting veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) support for cardiac compromise has been reported. However, current literature enunciates a paucity of available data on the effectiveness of these novel modalities.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a 9-year-old boy with recurrent COVID-19 infection-causing fulminant myocarditis, who was treated successfully by using novel modalities of
CONCLUSION: We conclude that the novel highly-absorptive hemofilter CVVH and VA-ECMO may be effective treatment modalities in managing SARS-CoV-2-induced …
