Michigan COVID-19 Syndromic Surveillance System Data
The Syndromic Surveillance System Data report was obtained from Michigan's COVID-19 dashboard, from under the link "Coronavirus Symptoms": https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus. Data was compiled by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The information was updated daily.

Ophthalmology Education In Covid-19: A Remote Elective For Medical Students, Sarah N. Devaro, Ogul E. Uner, Yousuf M. Khalifa, Emily B. Graubart
Journal of Academic Ophthalmology
Abstract
Background The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has created obstacles for medical student education, as clinical rotations were temporarily halted. Recent literature shows online electives may provide an alternative learning platform. We developed a teleophthalmology student elective for rising third-year medical student (MS3) and fourth-year medical student (MS4) to continue teaching and exposure to the field.
Methods A 4-week remote elective was approved by Emory University School of Medicine and offered between April 18, 2020, and May 15, 2020, for rising MS3s and MS4s. The curriculum consisted of online self-study materials, student presentations, chart review assignments, case-based discussions with faculty, …

Developing A Common Language Of Ethical Engagement In Teaching: Lessons For And From A Time Of Crisis, Richard D. Sawyer
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
This article explores how educators may develop and contribute to a common language of ethical engagement, a language that rises above specific actions but is grounded in ethical practice and scholarship. Questions are raised about how online education may further the patterns educational inequities in the United States. An ethics framework is explored through a comparison. The author explores the educational principles--not standards—that educators can surface in their teaching practice. A discussion is included of recent dilemmas and problems with online teaching environments, underscoring the need for ethical principles helping to frame practice.

A Mathematical Model For The Effect Of Social Distancing On The Spread Of Covid-19, Anna Singley, Hannah Callender Highlander
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
Social distancing is an effective method of impeding the spread of a novel disease such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), but is dependent on public involvement and is susceptible to failure when sectors of the population fail to participate. A standard SIR model is largely incapable of modeling differences in a population due to the broad generalizations it makes such as uniform mixing and homogeneity of hosts, which results in lost detail and accuracy when modeling heterogeneous populations. By further compartmentalizing an SIR model, via the separation of people within susceptible and infected groups, we can more …

Ethical Aspects Of Covid-19 Antibody Testing, Stephen S. Hanson, Demetra Antimisiaris
Ethical Aspects Of Covid-19 Antibody Testing, Stephen S. Hanson, Demetra Antimisiaris
The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
One common COVID-19 test is the test for one or more of the antibodies that the body creates when it encounters the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Because these tests are often point-of-care, rapid tests that require only a blood sample, they may appear to patients to be an easily accessible and useful tool to guide their actions in the pandemic. However, serologic antibody tests should not be offered to patients in normal practice under nearly any circumstances. They are useful in narrow diagnostic settings in later stage infections, and they serve an important public health function, but they are not of benefit …

The Battle Between Politics And Science Is Costing Us A Timely Victory Over The Covid-19 Pandemic, Marc Hahn
Faculty and Staff Publications
Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, the author discusses what he views as a persistent tension between the nature and aims of politics vs science. He outlines a call to action for osteopathic physicians to stand with science, advocate for best practices, undertake dialogue with local and state health authorities, and act as role models for colleagues and patients alike.
