Changes In Health Behaviors By Gender During A Global Pandemic, Anthony Costarella
Changes In Health Behaviors By Gender During A Global Pandemic, Anthony Costarella
Celebration of Scholarship 2022
As we emerge from Covid-19 pandemic, many people struggle to return to normal, leading us to ask what changes have occurred as a result of the virus and social distancing. We have observed 471 million people suffer with Covid-19, lost 6.08 million lives to the virus, and learned how the virus works as well as how to fight it, yet very little is known about the impact of the virus and its countermeasures on our health habits. PURPOSE: To examine the effect of gender on changes in health behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Eight hundred and sixty-six subjects (70.8% …

Preventing Occupational Imbalance With Seniors Living In The Community During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Carrieanne Allegri
Preventing Occupational Imbalance With Seniors Living In The Community During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Carrieanne Allegri
MOT Student Capstones
When COVID-19 shut down the world in March of 2020, nobody knew what to expect. What we discovered was seniors no longer had the opportunities to engage in social events, attend classes, or participate in the community. Understanding that engagement in leisure and social activities are important in preventing depression and isolation amongst seniors, finding alternative activities via virtual delivery and socially distanced were identified as a need. 3 An in-service was provided to senior citizens at a community center to address areas identified as a need by community center staff and members. The main objective of the in-service included …
Exploring Commons Governance, Nonprofit Commons Governance, And Convening Leadership In Nonprofit Organizations To Solve Complex Societal And Global Issues: A Qualitative Study, Patricia A. Clary
PhD in Organizational Leadership
Nonprofit organizations that operate independently without knowledge of effective governance principles and convening leadership through collective-action collaboration have less shared resources and philanthropic value to fulfill their organization’s mission. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic accentuated awareness of the need for nonprofit organizations and voluntary action associations to collaborate, leading to increased shared resources and philanthropic value through governance and convening leadership. The purpose of this study was to examine four design principles of commons governance (Ostrom, 1990), five nonprofit commons governance principles and assumptions (Lohmann, 1992), and five convening leadership dimensions (Clary, 2021) to understand how governance and convening leadership contribute …
Pandemics And Housing Insecurity: A Blueprint For Land Use Law Reform, John R. Nolon
Pandemics And Housing Insecurity: A Blueprint For Land Use Law Reform, John R. Nolon
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
COVID-19, racial inequity, housing insecurity, and climate change have come together to create widespread, large-scale crises. This Article introduces these four pandemics and describes in detail what local governments are doing to combat one of them: housing insecurity. It reviews recent progress with traditional inclusionary zoning requirements, discusses the move toward greater density in single-family zoning, lists strategies being used to remediate distressed housing, and notes the importance of affordable housing as a necessary strategy for preventing lower-income household displacement caused by gentrification. The reciprocal impacts of these four pandemics are clear; local land use leaders should examine how mitigating …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe elementary public school teachers’ experiences coping with stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using Lazarus and Folkman’s transactional model of stress and coping theory, the study answered the central research question: How do elementary public school teachers describe their experiences coping with stress during the COVID-19 pandemic? The sub-questions addressed: What psychological, physical, and emotional mechanisms are elementary public school teachers using to cope with stress during the COVID-19 pandemic? Purposeful sampling and maximum variation sampling were used to select 14 elementary public school teachers’ who experienced teaching during the COVID-19 …

Work–Life Balance In Parent Teachers During Covid-19, Allyson Leigh Owens-Horton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Working parents engage in multiple roles. Often, the responsibilities of one role conflicts with the expectations of another role, creating a sense of imbalance. Because of this, working parents often find value in achieving a degree of work-life balance that aligns with their needs and values. Parents employed as teachers may face unique challenges around balancing work and family roles, due to the nature of their jobs. This challenge was heightened by the worldwide change in education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to examine the work-life balance of parent teachers during COVID-19. The present study …
Evangelical Mental Health During A Pandemic: A Three-Way Interaction Analysis, Michael Sean Williams
Evangelical Mental Health During A Pandemic: A Three-Way Interaction Analysis, Michael Sean Williams
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
COVID-19 quickly became a global pandemic and a biological disaster. Mental health deteriorated due to fear, stress, isolation, and loneliness. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, and disturbed sleep have been associated with COVID-19. There is limited research on mental health and well-being among evangelical Christians. A primary concern is that church congregants and leaders are tired and struggle with mental health issues. Thus, care for the congregation and community is limited. The rate of distress and depression among the religious is on the rise. The purpose of this quantitative research is to evaluate the interaction of perceived stress and emotional …

Back To School: Changes In Elementary General Music Curriculum Design After Covid-19, David Christian Moniz
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this project is to identify how elementary general music curriculum can address the negative impacts of the sense of isolation felt by elementary music students because of COVID-19. When designed appropriately, components of the elementary music curriculum can help recover the sense of belonging lost during the implementation of forced remote and hybrid learning platforms. With the use of large-group surveys, this qualitative research study investigates the sense of isolation felt by elementary general music students after remote school attendance, hybrid school attendance, and non-attendance. These perspectives did not exist until recently, as the effects of the …

Nowhere To Run. Impact Of Family Violence Incidents During Covid-19 Lockdown In Texas, Edidiong Mendie, Abiodun Raufu, Emmanuel Ben Edet, Oludayo Famakin-Johnson
Journal of Family Strengths
The prevalence of family violence incidents experienced an exponential rise during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The pandemic ushered in a new threat to life which was complicated by the restriction on mobility. Given the stay-at-home order enacted by different States, victims of family violence were compelled to face their abusers with no escape route, particularly intimate partners. This work is an exploratory study that analyzed the trends of family violence cases in selected Texas counties pre covid-19 and during covid-19. The data revealed an increase in family violence incidents from 12 out of the 15 counties studied. This work offers …
Insuring Contraceptive Equity, Jennifer Hickey
Insuring Contraceptive Equity, Jennifer Hickey
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
The United States is in the midst of a family planning crisis. Approximately half of all pregnancies nationwide are unintended. In recognition of the social importance of family planning, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) includes a “contraceptive mandate” that requires insurers to cover contraception at no cost. Yet, a decade after its enactment, the ACA’s promise of universal contraceptive access for insured women remains unfulfilled, with as many as one-third of U.S. women unable to access their preferred contraceptive without cost.
While much attention has been focused on religious exemptions granted to employers, the primary barrier to no-cost contraception is …

Exercise As A Moderator Of Persistent Neuroendocrine Symptoms Of Covid-19, Candida J. Rebello, Christopher L. Axelrod, Charles F. Reynolds, Frank L. Greenway, John P. Kirwan
Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications
Precipitated by chronic psychological stress, immune system dysregulation, and a hyperinflammatory state, the sequelae of postacute COVID-19 (long COVID) include depression and new-onset diabetes. We hypothesize that exercise counters the neuropsychiatric and endocrine sequelae of long COVID by inducing the release of circulating factors that mediate the anti-inflammatory response, support brain homeostasis, and increase insulin sensitivity.

Journal of Family Strengths
Abstract
The paper was entitled: “The Influence of the COVID-19 Pandemic on At-Risk Populations Experiencing stress and Family Violence: The Importance of An Action Model.”
As the title of the paper indicates, the paper had an ambitious task of showing how vulnerable populations, such as African Americans, because of racism, discrimination and subsequent inequities in their life experiences (such as inadequate health care, poor working conditions, a host of underlying health conditions, and potentially greater amounts of stress) are likely to become sicker with COVID-19 (higher morbidity and mortality) and, subsequently, more likely to experience higher than normal rates of …

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Facemask use is associated with reduced transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Most surveys assessing perceptions and practices of mask use miss the most vulnerable racial, ethnic, and socio-economic populations. These same populations have suffered disproportionate impacts from the pandemic. The purpose of this study was to assess beliefs, access, and practices of mask wearing across 15 urban emergency department (ED) populations.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study of ED patients from December 2020 to March 2021 at 15 geographically diverse, safety net EDs across the US. The primary outcome was frequency of mask use outside the …

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic and other social dynamics created a myriad of challenges and changes for individuals, groups, and societies. The impacts on youth are particularly noteworthy given developmental processes of adolescence and emerging adulthood. As psychologists, we have much to offer in studying how 2020 influenced their development and in shaping effective supports. To be useful, the work must be nuanced, iterative, and attentive to their lived realities. We argue for a dynamic research framework to study these developmental processes. Through such an approach, psychological science can provide insight into diverse young people’s experiences of COVID-19 with a …

These main themes described the lived phenomenon that …
Mental Health Mobile Apps And The Need To Update Federal Regulations To Protect Users, Kewa Jiang
Mental Health Mobile Apps And The Need To Update Federal Regulations To Protect Users, Kewa Jiang
Michigan Technology Law Review
With greater societal emphasis on the need for better mental health services coupled with COVID-19 limits, mental health mobile applications have significantly risen in variety, availability, and accessibility. As more consumers use mental health mobile applications, more data is generated and collected by mobile application companies. However, consumers may have the false assumption that the data collected is protected under HIPAA or have an expectation of privacy protection higher than current regulations afford. This Note examines HIPAA, Health Breach Notification Rule, and section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act, as well as how these regulations fall short of protecting …

Vaccine Hesitancy In The Post-Covid-19 Era: An Interdisciplinary Approach For A Trust-And-Risk Paradigm With Governmental And Intergovernmental Implications, Laurent Cleenewerck De Kiev, Danny A. Schieffler
Healthcare Informatics Faculty Publications
Vaccine hesitancy was described as a major global health challenge by the World Health Organization before the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic (Ten Health Issues WHO Will Tackle This Year, 2019).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the introduction of several new vaccines (notably Pfizer, Moderna, J&J) and with them new vaccine technologies (mRNA) under emergency use authorization (EUA), combined with the political context of these vaccines’ accelerated development, triggered a heightened level of vaccine hesitancy and refusal in the United States and around the world (FDA, 2021).
This paper study undertakes to investigate the foundations and recent evolution of this phenomenon …

Understanding Food Insecurity As A Multidimensional Construct: A Mixed Methods Approach To Assess Changes In Food Insecurity Status Among People Seeking Emergency Food Assistance, Whitney M. Fung Uy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: In the United States, 13.8 million households were food insecure in 2020, or 10.5% of the country’s population. Although the annual food insecurity rates remained stable between 2019 and 2020, largely due to increased COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts, many households experienced food insecurity and hardship at unprecedented rates. Food assistance provided by the largest government nutrition and food program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and emergency food providers (EFPs) such as food banks and pantries intended to provide short-term solutions have ended up as chronic, long-term methods of survival for many of these families, especially during COVID-19 and the …

In-depth interviews were conducted with 27 food supply stakeholders working in food production, distribution, retail, hospitality, institutions (i.e., childcare), logistics/freight and local government. Pre-COVID-19, farmer-direct distribution options and hospitality businesses comprised a substantial proportion of local food producer businesses. During the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers favoured local food supply options, farmers collaborated, and produce usually destined for export was redirected into local markets. Critical food supply actions included …
