Large-scale events for over 100 people were canceled, and professors had to rapidly adapt their teaching and class structure to an online format, which presented different obstacles across departments. Louisville Coronavirus Surveillance Program, Julio A. Ramirez, Kenneth E. Palmer, Ruth Carrico, Forest W. Arnold, Donghoon Chung, Leslie A Wolf

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections

An important feature of COVID-19, the disease produced by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, is the high number of health care workers (HCWs) that acquire the disease. In an initial report of 138 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia in China, 40 patients (29%) were HCWs. One reason why HCWs are at higher risk of acquiring COVID-19 is that some patients with COVID-19 are admitted to the hospital without the classical presentation and are therefore not tested for the disease early during hospitalization. Presently in the US, it is recommended to test for COVID-19 when physicians suspect the disease. This subjective approach …

Love In The Time Of The Coronavirus: Do You Turn Your Back When Someone Offers You A Hand, A Kiss Or A Hug?, Brian Labus

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

We are exposed to numerous viruses from our day-to-day interactions with other people all the time. However, our risk of being infected by a simple greeting usually isn’t in the forefront of our minds. The spread of COVID-19 has changed that. Conferences have banned handshakes, churches have changed their worship services, and even politicians have changed the way they greet each other. But what’s the risk in a simple hug or a handshake?

Proposals For Coping With "Psychological Typhoon Eye" Effect Detected In Covid-19, Xu Mingxing, Zheng Rui, Rao Lilin, Kuang Yi, Yang Shuwen, Ding Yang, Li Jianglong, Li Shu

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Psychological typhoon eye (PTE) effect describes the public's irrational panic and response to major emergencies. This phenomenon is reported and named by LI Shu and his colleagues after the Wenchuan earthquake. During the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, we conducted a worldwide survey to investigate the safety concerns and risk perception of the COVID-19 epidemic from participants staying in five areas of different levels of risk (high-risk, moderate and high-risk, moderate-risk, low-risk, and very lowrisk areas). This effect appears to hold for COVID-19. Specifically, participants staying abroad showed more safety concerns or fears of the COVID-19 epidemic than participants staying …
