Predicitive Modeling, Empowering Women, And Covid-19 In South Sumatra, Indonesia, Yeni Yeni, Najmah Najmah, Sharyn Graham Davies
ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to almost all provinces in Indonesia, including South Sumatra. Epidemiological models are required to provide evidence for public health policymakers to mitigate the virus. The aim of this study is: 1) to create a prediction model for COVID-19 cases in South Sumatra to help inform about public health policy and 2) to reflect on women’s experiences to provide solutions for mitigating the impact of COVID-19. This study uses quantitative and qualitative methods. A quantitative modeling approach called Susceptible–Infected–Recovered (SIR) model is used to predict COVID-19 cases in South Sumatra. The assumption used is that …

COVID-19 preventions have cut access to routine medical care, especially for many chronic neurological disease patients. This condition has especially promoted telemedicine use in providing healthcare. This study aimed to review telemedicine use catalyzed by several regulations of the Indonesian Government and review 20 cases from Bethesda Hospital in Yogyakarta providing online consultation services. Perceptions of experience on telemedicine were collected from neurological patients at the hospital who were asked about their impressions of consultations and pharmacy medication services, and their suggestions about the new system in outpatient consultations. The regulations for telemedicine use are relevant because of these patients’ …

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected every country. Currently, no suitable vaccine or treatment has been identified; therefore, each country has attempted to issue appropriate policies, designed to reduce and prevent increases in the numbers of extreme cases. Transmission can be prevented by implementing social restrictions, also known as social distancing. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued several methods for the prevention of transmission, including social distancing, washing hands with soap (or using hand sanitizer containing at least 70% alcohol), and using masks. Over time, the term social distance has changed to physical distance. Evaluating the impacts …

Investigating The Domestic Layers Adaptation During Pandemic, Afifah Karimah, Kristanti Dewi Paramita
Interiority
This paper expands the theoretical understanding of building layers proposed by Brand (1995) by investigating changes in the domestic environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Brand’s layer framework breaks a built environment into “shearing layers” to examine its adaptation processes. This paper argues that ways of managing the risk of virus transmission in the built environment redefine the understanding of these layers. This paper takes the perspective of interiority to address these layers as instruments with the spatial qualities required of a resilient domestic environment. The study unpacks the theory of Brand’s layer framework, proposing the principles by which layers adapt …

Interiority
This paper speculates on the potential long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the way we interact with each other in cities by focusing on the socio-spatial concept of the urban interior. How will our everyday life in cities change? What changes will be wrought on our informal encounters and our temporal occupation of places and spaces? What impact will future urban planning have on the way we move through, work and study in and act as individuals and collectives in our cities? In order to look ahead, it is worth reflecting on historical examples. Studying the ways diseases have …

The Charms Of An American Queen Anne: Rediscovered A-Lá Covid-19, David T. De Celis
Interiority
This moment, the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, has provided an opportunity—sometimes forced via crisis, or via moments of quiet reflection—to consider the inside, interior time and space, in new ways. In America, like other countries, architectural styles have come to us from foreign lands. Numerous domestic structures were influenced by British events from the 1700s–1800s. These styles—these architectures—were transformed by local/regional/national influences and events—events like this current international pandemic—that push the proverbial pause button, and cause us to re-think design. The author, who now resides and works (along with his family) in an 1886 Queen Anne style home, contemplates the various …

Responses to the COVID-19 pandemic may leave many people behind through a variety of exclusion processes as basic information about the virus and its spread is shared with the public. We conduct a rapid virtual audit of pandemic related press briefings and press conferences issued by governments and international organizations in order to assess if responses have been inclusive to the hearing-impaired communities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We analyze COVID-19 press conferences and press briefings issued during Feb–May 2020, for over 123 LMICs and for international organizations (e.g. the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Health …

A total of 754 adult respondents from the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) participated in a needs assessment survey conducted between May 25, 2020 and June 30, 2020. The survey aimed to reach out to specific populations: immigrants and refugees (N=246), non-immigrant racial/ethnic minority groups (N=163), and people with disabilities (N=93) each had a large enough sample size to include in this report. The survey also aimed to reach out to LGBTQ+ populations, however, we did not collect enough surveys from people who identified as LGBTQ+ to have reliable information. Key findings from the survey included: Understand Information from MOA • …

The COVID-19 pandemic has required people to take new measures to mitigate the spread of the communicable virus. Guidelines from health organizations, government offices, and universities have been disseminated. Adherence to these guidelines cannot be more critical for flight training. This study explored the effects face masks had on CO2, heart rate, respiration rate, and oxygen saturation while wearing a face mask at an oxygen level simulated to 5,000 feet. Thirty-two instructor pilots (IP) volunteered to participate in the study. IPs spent 90 minutes in a normobaric chamber while wearing a cloth face mask or a paper face mask. Participants …

A Few Things You Should Know This Week (2020-2023)
- The new CARES Center is now operational online, via phone and via the GS mobile app.
- Georgia Southern Health Services is ready and currently providing testing for students.
- We are aware that many parents of school-aged children are dealing with unique decisions and circumstances right now
- Face-coverings are to be worn inside and outside where six feet social distancing may not always be possible.
- If “enforcement” of the face-coverings requirement is necessary, it should be carried out with civility and respect
