Virtual Advocacy: Lived Experience Takes Center Stage During And After Pandemic, Gyasi Burks-Abbott, Amanda V. Gannaway, Amy Szarkowski, Jason M. Fogler, David T. Helm

Developmental Disabilities Network Journal

COVID-19 forced a significant change for participants of the Disability Policy Seminar (DPS) typically held annually in Washington, D.C. The DPS is a policy event that both informs its participants about current policy and supports attendees visiting Capitol Hill to meet with legislators. In 2020, the DPS event, which took place during the early phase of the pandemic, was shifted from “on the Hill” to “across the screen”. Through the various lenses of an autistic self-advocate, a mother of a child with a developmental disability, and faculty of a LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities) program, this paper …

Adapting Participatory Action Research To Include Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities During The Covid-19 Global Pandemic, Kaitlyn P. Ahlers, Kara B. Ayers, Suzannah Iadarola, Rosemary B. Hughes, Hyon Soo Lee, Heather J. Williamson

Developmental Disabilities Network Journal

Participatory action research (PAR), or the inclusion of those affected by the issues being studied, is a growing area of emphasis in disability research. The principles of PAR align with those of the disability rights movement, such that full inclusion and “nothing about us without us” extends as much to research as it does to any other area of life. Moreover, PAR allows for meaningful input from people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), which enhances the likelihood that research results are relevant and important to the disability community. As research activity resumes and is adapted to the context of …

Us Media’S Coverage Of China’S Handling Of Covid-19: Playing The Role Of The Fourth Branch Of Government Or The Fourth Estate?, Wenshan Jia, Fangzhu Lu

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

The present study is an analysis of a sample of reports on China’s handling of COVID-19 by several major US media with a focus on a controversial op-ed by the Wall Street Journal. It is found that instead of covering it objectively as a public health crisis, these media reports tend to adopt the strategy of naming, shaming, blaming, and taming against China. In other words, they seize the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan as an opportunity to serve Trump’s “America First” doctrine by a coordinated attempt to destroy the Chinese dream and arresting China’s ascendency. First, the naming/shaming …

Lockdowns, Quarantines, And Travel Restrictions, During Covid And Beyond: What’S The Law, And How Should We Decide?, Lawrence O. Gostin, Meryl Chertoff

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in vast deprivations of liberty previously unthinkable: lockdowns, business closures, travel restrictions, and quarantines. Even witnessing China’s January 2020 lockdown of 11 million people in Wuhan, it seemed wholly implausible that London, Rome, or New York would shut down. But they did, and much more. At the initial height of the pandemic in April 2020, more than 3.9 billion people, about half the world's population, were under stay-at-home orders. That same month, 43 US states were under stay-at-home orders.

What are the scientific, public health, and ethical justifications for various forms of liberty deprivations? Are they …

Nursing Instructors’ Experiences During Covid-19, Vonda Hammons Boone

Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration

Abstract

COVID-19 came with a vengeance to the southern U.S. and had a significant impact on higher education. Both students and faculty were greatly affected. There was a rush to transform on-campus classes to online formats. Many faculty and students who lived in rural areas or where internet speeds were slow or without internet, scrambled to obtain service. This made engaging in online classes difficult and in some cases impossible. Additionally, issues arose with the use of different programs and with trying to put classrooms into an electronic format such as moving classroom lectures to Kaltura™, learning how to load …

A Research Agenda For (Gender) Troubled Times: Striving For A Better Tomorrow, Catherine Coleman, Eileen Fischer, Linda Tuncay Zayer

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

As we gathered on Zoom to begin this editorial, a typical COVID-19 experience unfolded. Working from our living rooms, kitchens, or closets (Eileen) we checked in as to how each of us was coping, knowing that we were navigating multiple responsibilities and uncertainties. Having assured ourselves that we were all “fine, really, okay,” we proceeded to get down to work, only to have Linda’s kids start vying for her attention because—of course—she’s not just trying to write an editorial, she’s also overseeing the online learning they are supposed to be doing. If we needed it, our shared experience was living …

Introduction: government measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be effective without widespread compliance by the public. A greater understanding of citizens' perceptions of these measures can help government agencies adapt their strategies to boost compliance. We examined citizens' perceptions of government's measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and its implications on compliance using data from Onitsha city, Anambra State Nigeria.

Methods: data was obtained through in-person interviews of 140 consenting adults in March 2020. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to summarize the data.

Results: most participants (84.7%) doubted government's ability to manage the COVID-19 outbreak, raising concerns about …

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven the cruelty of the U.S. market-driven health care system that disproportionately affects the poor. It illuminates how much a well-funded public health care system is vital for the survival of all. However, amidst the ruins of the pandemic and economic crisis, digital capitalism is driving a new round of capitalist restructuring with the health care sector at the center of capital’s new digitization push. Tech companies are at the forefront of this capitalist endeavor. Long before the outbreak, these companies and others have been cultivating the health sector into their profit-making enterprise. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic where several comorbidities have been shown to have a significant effect on mortality. Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have a higher mortality rate than non-DM patients if they get COVID-19. Recent studies have indicated that patients with a history of diabetes can increase the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. Additionally, patients without any history of diabetes can acquire new-onset DM when infected with COVID-19. Thus, there is a need to explore the bidirectional link between these two conditions, confirming the vicious loop between "DM/COVID-19". This narrative review presents …
