Newall Glacier Nucleic Acid Analysis, Shannon Turner Apr 2018

Newall Glacier Nucleic Acid Analysis, Shannon Turner

Honors Projects

The Newall Glacier is located in Antarctica between Mount Newall and Mount Weyant, at approximately 77°30′S, 162°50′E. Having existed for millions of years, and being rarely touched by human populations, glaciers are a major source of information on climate and life in the past. During the past 5 decades, a multi-country team of scientists have collaborated to drill into many of Antarctica’s glaciers and ice fields, removing ice cores for scientific investigation. The ice core section chosen for this project was drilled from the Newall Glacier in 1988 and its depth was from 100.670 to 101.000 m. The purpose of …

Evaluating Effects Of Gene Mutations And Light Intensity On Arabidopsis Thaliana Development, Carolanne Bekus Apr 2018

Evaluating Effects Of Gene Mutations And Light Intensity On Arabidopsis Thaliana Development, Carolanne Bekus

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Arabidopsis thaliana is a model organism often compared to commercial crops. The completion of sequencing A. thaliana’s genome has led to the next crucial challenge of determining gene function in these plants. The discovery of gene function within these plants will provide insights on how gene function can affect commercial crop production. This work compared wild-type Columbia (Col-O) A. thaliana to single gene mutants VPI/ABI3-like 1 (VAL1) and basic region/leucine zipper motif (bZIP). These single gene mutations may affect several traits that, in turn, can result in morphological changes and/or time of development in seedlings. Wild-type and …

Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Dissolved Oxygen Concentrations And Bioactivity In The Hyporheic Zone, W. Jeffery Reeder, Annika M. Quick, Tiffany B. Farrell, Shawn G. Benner, Kevin P. Feris, Daniele Tonina Mar 2018

Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Dissolved Oxygen Concentrations And Bioactivity In The Hyporheic Zone, W. Jeffery Reeder, Annika M. Quick, Tiffany B. Farrell, Shawn G. Benner, Kevin P. Feris, Daniele Tonina

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations and consumption rates are primary indicators of heterotrophic respiration and redox conditions in the hyporheic zone (HZ). Due to the complexity of hyporheic flow and interactions between hyporheic hydraulics and the biogeochemical processes, a detailed, mechanistic, and predictive understanding of the biogeochemical activity in the HZ has not yet been developed. Previous studies of microbial activity in the HZ have treated the metabolic DO consumption rate constant (KDO) as a temporally fixed and spatially homogeneous property that is determined primarily by the concentration of bioavailable carbon. These studies have generally treated bioactivity as temporally …

The problem that is often faced by students is the lack of high-level thinking ability of students especially on the material of human digestive system, causing many students who do not reach the target of graduation so that this research will be related to the problem of high-level thinking ability of junior high school students. The type of this research is quantitative with descriptive approach for data collection using questionnaire and accompanied by unstructured interview. Data analysis techniques with percentages and described. The results showed that 50% of the students were not interested, the digestive system material presented by the …

Hard-Sphere-Like Dynamics In Highly Concentrated Alpha-Crystallin Suspensions, Preeti Vodnala, Laurence Lurio, Michael C. Vega, Elizabeth Gaillard Feb 2018

Hard-Sphere-Like Dynamics In Highly Concentrated Alpha-Crystallin Suspensions, Preeti Vodnala, Laurence Lurio, Michael C. Vega, Elizabeth Gaillard

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The dynamics of concentrated suspensions of the eye-lens protein alpha crystallin have been measured using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. Measurements were made at wave vectors corresponding to the first peak in the hard-sphere structure factor and volume fractions close to the critical volume fraction for the glass transition. Langevin dynamics simulations were also performed in parallel to the experiments. The intermediate scattering function f(q,τ) could be fit using a stretched exponential decay for both experiments and numerical simulations. The measured relaxation times show good agreement with simulations for polydisperse hard-sphere colloids.
