Determination Of Microplastic Compounds In Some Species Of Freshwater Snails In Brantas River, East Java, Indonesia, R Adharyan Islamy, Yuni Kilawati, Veryl Hasan, Fitri Sil Valen, Noorhidayah Mamat, Ahmad Syazni Kamarudin, Yunita Maimunah Aug 2025

Determination Of Microplastic Compounds In Some Species Of Freshwater Snails In Brantas River, East Java, Indonesia, R Adharyan Islamy, Yuni Kilawati, Veryl Hasan, Fitri Sil Valen, Noorhidayah Mamat, Ahmad Syazni Kamarudin, Yunita Maimunah

Baghdad Science Journal

This research examines microplastic contamination patterns in three ecologically significant freshwater gastropods—Pomacea canaliculata, Filopaludina javanica, and Sulcospira testudinaria—in Indonesia's Brantas River system. Through systematic sampling at three downstream locations, we quantified and characterized microplastics within the digestive tracts of these molluscan species. The results demonstrate universal microplastic ingestion across all taxa, though with notable interspecific variation. The invasive P. canaliculata showed the highest contamination levels (4.5 microplastic particles per individual, average weight 15.2g), predominantly comprising textile fibers and plastic fragments. In contrast, F. javanica specimens (average 10.8g) contained primarily cosmetic microbeads and packaging films (2.7 particles/individual), …

Molecular Identification Of Acinetobacter Baumannii Isolated From Clinical Samples In Iraq By Using Multiplex Pcr, Yaseen Ismael Mamoori, Ibrahim Abdulla Ahmed, May Ridha Jaafer, Ayat Muneam Ali, Sabreen Ali Hadi Aug 2025

Molecular Identification Of Acinetobacter Baumannii Isolated From Clinical Samples In Iraq By Using Multiplex Pcr, Yaseen Ismael Mamoori, Ibrahim Abdulla Ahmed, May Ridha Jaafer, Ayat Muneam Ali, Sabreen Ali Hadi

Baghdad Science Journal

Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most clinically significant pathogens that cause severe nosocomial infections. Rapid identification of this bacterial species is essential so that proper treatment can be provided and outbreaks can be controlled. In this study, a multiplex PCR was used to identify A. baumannii. Twenty clinical isolates of A. baumannii and three each of Gram+ve (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus licheniformis, Micrococcus yunnanensis) and Gram−ve (Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacterial isolates were subjected to singleplex and multiplex PCR reactions using three sets of species-specific primers (P-Ab-ITS-F, P-Ab-ITS-R; …

Ability Of Staphylococcus Epidermidis And Escherichia Coli To Eliminate Cadmium, Lead And Copper From Tigris River In Mosul City, May A. Abdul Kader, Ghada A. Mohammad Aug 2025

Ability Of Staphylococcus Epidermidis And Escherichia Coli To Eliminate Cadmium, Lead And Copper From Tigris River In Mosul City, May A. Abdul Kader, Ghada A. Mohammad

Baghdad Science Journal

The heavy metals are non-biodegradable and could be toxic and carcinogenic, thus, their improper concentration in water could result in critical health issues for living organisms. Therefore, this study aimed to remove three heavy metals (Cadmium, lead and copper) by biological treatment especially using environmental nonpathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli. Eight samples were collected from Tigris River from different regions of Mosul city. Two containers were used for each sample to measure the concentration of minerals before and after treatment by bacteria. The results showed that E. coli was more efficient in removing two heavy …

Morphological And Transcriptional Responses Of Mammalian Cells To Glucose Stress, Cassandra Burke Aug 2025

Morphological And Transcriptional Responses Of Mammalian Cells To Glucose Stress, Cassandra Burke

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Organismal cells encounter varying conditions, including daily and potentially seasonal fluctuations in available glucose. While some species tightly regulate circulating glucose levels, others tolerate extreme fluctuations, such as frugivorous bats experiencing post-prandial hyperglycemia and hibernating mammals maintaining stable glucose through torpor and hibernation. To investigate how these species-specific strategies influence cellular responses to glucose perturbation, primary dermal fibroblasts from nine mammals – humans, rats, Egyptian fruit bats, brown bear, 13-lined ground squirrel, little brown bat, gelada, honey badger, and Bactrian camel – were exposed to hypoglycemic (2.5mM), baseline (8mM), or hyperglycemic (30mM) treatment. Cell morphology was evaluated using Cell Painting, …

Histochemical Demonstrations Of The Lens Of The Sailfin Molly (Poecilia Latipinna) With Retinal Adaptation, Shaimaa Awad Abid, Mukhtar Khamis Haba Aug 2025

Histochemical Demonstrations Of The Lens Of The Sailfin Molly (Poecilia Latipinna) With Retinal Adaptation, Shaimaa Awad Abid, Mukhtar Khamis Haba

Baghdad Science Journal

The study revealed that histochemical examination of the lens and retina in the fish Poecilia latipinna reflects adaptation and acclimation to dark and light conditions. The tissue sections of the lens and retina were stained with different stains and examined by a light microscope. The lens was found to be spherical in shape, transparent, hard, and avascular. The lens was surrounded by a cellular homogeneous capsule and followed by cuboidal epithelial cell layer, which was situated beneath the capsule. The epithelial cells elongated into lens fibers that were arranged in concentric rings, and the lens fiber membranes took a serrated …

Exploring Biblical Foundations In Biology, Keith Snyder Phd Jul 2025

Exploring Biblical Foundations In Biology, Keith Snyder Phd

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

Biologists have one of the most challenging areas of study due to the breadth of topics. Biology literally encompasses all life. Since life is based on chemical principles, which in turn are based on physical laws, we need to understand this panorama of science. Because academia in the US has pigeon-holed so much of our education, students are often unable to see the true integration of all aspects of life, resulting in a warped understanding of the interrelated complexity of our God’s creation. It is our duty to show how this intertwining of science and faith more fully represents God’s …

Antibacterial Effect Of Acetylsalicylic Acid On The Efficiency Of Azithromycin Against Resistant Salmonella Enterica: An In Vitro Study, Sawsan M. Amin, Ihsan M. Ahmed, Ahmed N. Abed Jul 2025

Antibacterial Effect Of Acetylsalicylic Acid On The Efficiency Of Azithromycin Against Resistant Salmonella Enterica: An In Vitro Study, Sawsan M. Amin, Ihsan M. Ahmed, Ahmed N. Abed

Baghdad Science Journal

This study aimed to determine the antibacterial effect of combined acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and azithromycin (AZM) against resistant Salmonella enterica. For this, the MIC and MBC of both drugs were determined, and a checkerboard test, a time-killing assay, and scanning electron microscopy were performed. The results showed that ASA had an antibacterial effect with MIC value of 16000 μg/ml and MBC value of 32000 μg/ml. Also, the combination of ASA with AZM has an additive effect with FICI interaction value 1.5 at 8000 μg/ml of ASA and 16 μg/ml of AZM, and this has a direct effect on preventing …
