The Webb Magazine focuses on alumni news and campus events from Gardner-Webb College; now Gardner-Webb University. This issue highlights many of GWU's recent actions around campus, such as sending students on mission trips, hiring new faculty/staff, participating in Will Graham's Crusade and providing relief/aid to Hurricane Katrina victims. One article features Frank Page, a Gardner-Webb alum who was elected as President of the Southern Baptist Convention. This issue also provides sports updates and a list of distinguished graduates.

An Assessment Of The Perceived Benefits Of Extracurricular Activity On Academic Achievement At Paramount High School, Michael Zwart
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
One of the many problems facing today’s schools is the need to raise academic achievement while facing the continuing issue of budget limitations. Paramount High School is in a lower socioeconomic suburban community in southern CA. Eighty seven percent of the students in the district receive free or reduced lunch and 21.9% were below the poverty level. Forty percent of the high school students were foreign born, 71.8% speak a language other than English at home, 34% were identified as English Language Learners, 50% of the students’ parents never graduated from high school, and the 81% Hispanic population creates a …

Todd Hickman Named Cougar Head Football Coach, University Relations

Athletic Director Mark Fohl announces that Todd Hickman has been named head football coach at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Hickman, who was selected following a national search, replaces Ken Crandall who resigned his position in December. Hickman will begin his duties immediately.

Gender Equity In College Athletics: Women Coaches As A Case Study, Deborah L. Rhode, Christopher J. Walker

As Title IX celebrates its 35th anniversary, many have noted the positive impact it has had on women sports. But there is also an unintended (and oft-neglected) byproduct: as opportunities for female students have increased, opportunities for female professionals have declined. This Article focuses on the barriers that still confront women in college athletics, particularly those who seek professional positions in coaching and administration. Part I presents a brief overview of Title IX, which makes clear its limitations in securing gender equity. Part II.A discusses the declining representation and lower success rate of women coaches, while Part II.B explores the …
