Cutting Sex-Performance Differences Down To Size: Are Females Closer To Males In Shorter Sprint Races?, Emily Mcclelland, Peter Weyand
Cutting Sex-Performance Differences Down To Size: Are Females Closer To Males In Shorter Sprint Races?, Emily Mcclelland, Peter Weyand
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The body size and composition differences between men and women are set by genetic factors with relatively constant offsets, particularly in homogeneous athletic populations. However, performance differences between the sexes appear to be more variable, potentially due to the mechanical demands of different events. Here, we set out to analyse the sex performance differences across sprint running events that differ in mechanical demands due to race length. Based on the scaling of tissue areas in relation to body mass, shorter, smaller athletes should be more forceful per kg body mass than larger ones. Greater force per kg body mass capabilities …
Changes In 800 Meter Personal Records For Competitive Female Runners From High School To College, Harper E. Stewart, Nathan Phillips, Jill L. Mcnittgray
Changes In 800 Meter Personal Records For Competitive Female Runners From High School To College, Harper E. Stewart, Nathan Phillips, Jill L. Mcnittgray
ISBS Proceedings Archive
TTo advance understanding of improvements in running performance, changes in personal records (PR) from high school to college were compared. It was hypothesized that females competing in the 800m in college would improve PR times from high school to college, improvements would be different between athletic conferences, and modern statistical methods could differentiate trends in the relationship between high school and college PR. Data from female athletes competing in the 800m from three different athletic conferences (n=73) were gathered from published race results and 79.4% improved by at least 1s with no significant differences between conferences. A positive relationship exists …
Influence Of Landing Quadrant On Elliptical Orbit And Its Realtion To Release Parameters Of The Hammer Throw, Annabelle Treacy, Suzanne Konz, Steven Leigh
Influence Of Landing Quadrant On Elliptical Orbit And Its Realtion To Release Parameters Of The Hammer Throw, Annabelle Treacy, Suzanne Konz, Steven Leigh
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Hammer throw official distance is determined by the velocity, angle, and height of the hammer at release, which is regulated by the acceleration arc of the hammer during the turns. This study aimed to examine the influence of position variables describing the elliptical orbit during each turn on the official distance and the release parameters. Competitive hammer throws from 35 athletes (17 men and 18 women) were digitized to obtain 3-D coordinates of the thrower and the hammer throughout the throw. Multiple regression models indicate that hammer positioning during turns 1 and 2 accounts for the greatest variance in the …
The Roles And Mechanisms Of Linear And Angular Impulse Generation For Both Legs In Baseball Pitching: A Whole-Body Perspective, Jun M. Liu, Christopher Knowlton, Matthew Gauthier, Zach Tropp, Nikhil Verma, Gregory Nicholson, Anthony Romeo, Antonia Zaferiou
The Roles And Mechanisms Of Linear And Angular Impulse Generation For Both Legs In Baseball Pitching: A Whole-Body Perspective, Jun M. Liu, Christopher Knowlton, Matthew Gauthier, Zach Tropp, Nikhil Verma, Gregory Nicholson, Anthony Romeo, Antonia Zaferiou
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study compared the role of each leg in generating linear and angular impulse during fastball pitches performed by professional pitchers (n=4). Participants were asked to pitch from an instrumented mound and 6-11 successful fastball pitches were used for the analysis. The results indicate that back leg generated forward linear impulse and the front leg generated backward linear impulse for all pitchers. Back leg ground reaction forces generated significantly larger angular impulse about a horizontal axis passing through the body center of mass from the mound to first base than the front leg in three of four pitchers. Additionally, the …
Linearity Of The Ratio Of Forces-Velocity Relationship Is Not Related To Initial Acceleration Performance In Sprinting, Daniel King, Louise Burnie, Ryu Nagahara, Neil Bezodis
Linearity Of The Ratio Of Forces-Velocity Relationship Is Not Related To Initial Acceleration Performance In Sprinting, Daniel King, Louise Burnie, Ryu Nagahara, Neil Bezodis
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The relationship between the linearity of the ratio of forces (RF)-horizontal velocity (vH) profile and initial acceleration (IA) performance was investigated in trained sprinters. Ground reaction force data from the IA phase of a maximal sprint from a block start were analysed. The coefficient of determination of the linear trendline fitted to four step-averaged values of RF and vH provided a measure of linearity. Semi-partial correlations (sr) accounting for block phase performance revealed a weak negative relationship between linearity of the RF-vH profile and performance over the first four steps (sr = -0.11), while mean RF …
The Three-Dimentional Pelvic Motion In The Acceleration And Maximum Phases, Kazuki Ota, Takuya Yoshida, Hirohiko Maemura, Satoru Tanigawa
The Three-Dimentional Pelvic Motion In The Acceleration And Maximum Phases, Kazuki Ota, Takuya Yoshida, Hirohiko Maemura, Satoru Tanigawa
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of pelvic motion in the acceleration and maximum velocity phases. Eleven male sprinters performed 30 m and 60 m sprints at maximal effort and captured sprint movement at 15 m and 50 m. The contact time was significantly longer, and the angular displacement of pelvic elevation on the frontal plane was significantly greater in the acceleration phase than in the maximum velocity phase. Additionally, the angular displacement of pelvic elevation on the frontal plane showed a significantly positive correlation with the contact time and the stance length in the acceleration …
Differences Between Control And Suppressed Arm Sprint Running During The Maximum Velocity Phase, Sam Gleadhill, Ryu Nagahara
Differences Between Control And Suppressed Arm Sprint Running During The Maximum Velocity Phase, Sam Gleadhill, Ryu Nagahara
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to clarify sprint characteristic differences between control and suppressed arm sprint running during the maximum velocity phase. Baseball players (n=15) completed a 50 m control and suppressed arm trial, and ground reaction force was measured with force platforms. Sprint characteristics were calculated during the stride that maximum velocity was reached. Cohen’s d effect size with 95% confidence intervals and paired T-tests elucidated differences between trials. The maximum velocity decreased by 7.06% during the suppressed arm trial, compared to the control, probably caused by the suppressed arm condition. There were further decreases in propulsive (12.67%), …
Relationship Between Hip Range Of Motion And Pitching Kinematics In High School Baseball Pitchers, Nicole Bordelon, Hillary Plummer, Gretchen D. Oliver
Relationship Between Hip Range Of Motion And Pitching Kinematics In High School Baseball Pitchers, Nicole Bordelon, Hillary Plummer, Gretchen D. Oliver
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to examine the association of hip rotational range of motion (ROM) with lower extremity and trunk kinematics in high school baseball pitchers. Twenty-five healthy high school baseball pitchers volunteered (15.9 ± 1.1 years). Passive hip internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) ROM was measured with the pitchers seated using a digital inclinometer. Total hip ROM (IR + ER) was calculated for the stride leg and drive leg. Biomechanical data were collected with a 3-D electromagnetic tracking system while pitchers threw three fastballs. Simple linear regression analysis determined drive and stride leg hip IR, …
An Investigation Into The Release Factor Effects Of Hammer Throw, Suzanne M. Konz
An Investigation Into The Release Factor Effects Of Hammer Throw, Suzanne M. Konz
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study aimed to determine the relationship of release factors on the final hammer throw distance of American throwers as well to determine where differences in release factors between the years and throw distance groups (TDG). The video from 94 hammer throws (52 female throws and 42 male throws) were analyzed using 2-D to 3-D coordinates via DLT procedures. Analysis of the release factors of a throw revealed correlations with release velocity but not height and angle. Further analysis revealed that release height has decreased while vertical velocity and release angle have increased since 2016.
Explosive Plantar Flexor Performance: A Comparison Of Elite Sprinters Versus Physically Active Individuals, Evan D. Crotty, Laura-Anne Furlong, Andrew J. Harrison
Explosive Plantar Flexor Performance: A Comparison Of Elite Sprinters Versus Physically Active Individuals, Evan D. Crotty, Laura-Anne Furlong, Andrew J. Harrison
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study examined differences in explosive muscular torque production of the plantar flexors of participants with differing training backgrounds. Explosive performance of a group of elite sprinters (n = 14) and physically active individuals (n = 14) were examined during explosive and maximal isometric contractions across different muscle-tendon unit (MTU) lengths. The rate of torque development (RTD) across time windows (0-50, 50-100, 100-150 ms) and maximal voluntary torque (MVT) was measured. Sprinters exhibited greater early phase RTD (0-50, 50-100 ms) across MTU lengths. Relative MVT was greater for sprinters at the dorsiflexed MTU length only. The results suggest …
An Investigation Into The Effect Of Lane Radius On Step Characterisitcs In Indoor Bend Sprinting, Jonathan White, Hans Von Lieres Und Wilkau, Timothy Exell, Gareth Irwin, Cassie Wilson, Hannah Wyatt, Gillian Weir, Joseph Hamill
An Investigation Into The Effect Of Lane Radius On Step Characterisitcs In Indoor Bend Sprinting, Jonathan White, Hans Von Lieres Und Wilkau, Timothy Exell, Gareth Irwin, Cassie Wilson, Hannah Wyatt, Gillian Weir, Joseph Hamill
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The study aimed to identify the effect of radius on step characteristics during bend sprinting. Eight sprinters undertook two ~80 m sprints in two different conditions through two capture areas (straight and bend) collecting whole-body kinematic data. Step Velocity on the straight was lower than Lane 2 on the bend for the left-to-right step, brought about by a greater Step frequency (SF). Right-to-left SF was significantly lower in Lane 4 in comparison to the straight due to a greater step time. Step time was greater in Lane 4 for the right step compared to Lane 2. A greater …
