Sport At The Service Of Human Development: Distinctly Jesuit Athletics, Matthew L. Davidson Ph.D., Robert W. Davis Jr., Ed.D.

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This article describes the underlying theory and practice of a Distinctly Jesuit Approach to Athletics, which was represented at the 2016 Vatican Conference, Sport at the Service of Humanity. The approach has been developed and implemented in a collaboration between the Institute for Excellence & Ethics (IEE) and the athletics departments at Le Moyne College and The University of Scranton. The article recounts the context that was the foundation for the work, the process for developing this distinct type of Athletics Department, and the early results of the ongoing work. The steps included here represent a rigorous and replicable …

Force-Velocity-Power Profiles Of Elite Sprinters: Inter-And Intra-Individual Determinants Of Performance, Helen Bayne

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Elite athletes are underrepresented in scientific research and evidence from group-based studies may not be applicable to individual elite athletes. The purpose of this study was to investigate mechanical determinants of sprint performance in elite sprinters using inter- and intra-individual approaches. Six elite and six sub-elite sprinters performed maximal effort sprint acceleration trials and their force-velocity-power profiles were computed. Theoretical maximum velocity, power and the ratio of force were greater in the elite than the sub-elite athletes. Within the elite group, individuals achieved their fastest times through greater theoretical maximum horizontal force with only small differences in theoretical maximum velocity …

Frontal Plane Take-Off Step Mechanics Of Long Jumpers With And Without A Below The Knee Amputation, Johannes Funken, Steffen Willwacher, Kai Heinrich, Ralf Müller, Hiroaki Hobara, Alena M. Grabowski, Wolfgang Potthast

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Frontal plane mechanics during the long jump take-off step are unknown for athletes with and without a transtibial amputation. This is an issue due to the importance of the knowledge for training and rehabilitation protocols or prosthetic design. In this study the take-off step of three long jumpers with and seven without a below the knee amputation (BKA) were analysed with regard to frontal plane mechanics. Three-dimensional motion capture (Vicon) and a force plate (Kistler) were used to capture kinematic and kinetic data. Inverse dynamic calculations (Dynamicus, Alaska) revealed differences in frontal plane center of mass kinematics and joint kinetics …

Comparison Of World Elite And Japanese Elite Throwers In The Discus Throw, Kei Maeda, Keigo Byun Ohyama, Jun Mizushima, Daisuke Yamamoto, Kenichi Hirose, Ryosuke Kajitani, Mitsugi Ogata

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The aim of this study is to clarify the differences between world elite and Japanese elite throwers in the discus throw by comparing their hip-shoulder and shoulder-arm separation angles. The performances of 12 male world elite discus throwers (the World group) and 12 male Japanese elite discus throwers (the National group) were analysed. The hip-shoulder and shoulder-arm separation through the throwing motion were greater in the World group than in the National group. In the World group, the hip-shoulder separation reached its local maximum at the middle of 2nd single support phase, and the shoulder-arm separation reached its local maximum …
