Whose Game Is It? Re-Centering Athlete Voice In Interscholastic Sports: A Literature Review, Nick Pocius
Whose Game Is It? Re-Centering Athlete Voice In Interscholastic Sports: A Literature Review, Nick Pocius
Essays in Education
Interscholastic athletics have long been positioned as educational spaces that support the holistic development of young people. However, an increasing emphasis on outcomes such as winning, advancement, and visibility has shifted the experience away from its intended purpose. This article examines the growing disconnect between what athletes report valuing in their sport experience and the expectations imposed by adults and broader societal pressures. Drawing on motivational frameworks such as Self-Determination Theory and achievement goal theory, alongside practitioner experience, the article identifies four key elements that athletes consistently prioritize: belonging, growth, autonomy, and meaningful engagement. It then explores how external influences, …

Addressing Mental Health Issues And The Effectiveness Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy And Mindfulness-Based Interventions Among Athletes, Shelby Jones-Stachnik
Addressing Mental Health Issues And The Effectiveness Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy And Mindfulness-Based Interventions Among Athletes, Shelby Jones-Stachnik
Dissertations
This literature review identifies mental health concerns among competitive athletes and evaluates psychological interventions to address these challenges. Specifically, the review explores the mental health concerns experienced by athletes engaged in high-level sport. It examines whether cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based interventions are effective approaches for improving psychological outcomes in this population. A systematic review of peer-reviewed research was conducted, and findings were synthesized to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based interventions. The review included randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies, and meta-analyses examining psychological interventions in athletic populations. Findings across the literature indicate that both cognitive behavioral …
The Importance Of Career And Retirement Services For Student Athletes, Vincent R. Giuliano
The Importance Of Career And Retirement Services For Student Athletes, Vincent R. Giuliano
Masters Projects
There are hundreds of thousands of collegiate student-athletes competing in organized sports in the NCAA. Research shows the different resources that are available to them during their time competing, as well as how sports can open different opportunities for them during their competitive years. However, once this is over, an individual may realize they spent their time becoming an athlete and not enough time on their holistic well-being and professional development due to time constraints, identity engulfment, etc. While institutions do well in nurturing students during their competitive years, they lack in considering the retirement of these student-athletes. This project's …
¡Estamos Aqui!: The Underrepresentation Of Latinos In Professional Sports And Sports Media, Antonio Hernandez
¡Estamos Aqui!: The Underrepresentation Of Latinos In Professional Sports And Sports Media, Antonio Hernandez
University Honors Theses
The Latino population has had a long and complicated history within the United States. Since the turn of the 21st century, Latinos continue to become the largest minority group within the country. As the Latino population continues to rise, other industries have failed to properly represent the community. Within the world of professional sports, Latinos continue to be grossly underrepresented, with professional athletes from Latino backgrounds representing less than 6% of all professional athletes across all disciplines. This number is just under ¼ of the total percentage of Latinos within the United States. With Latino's influence of other cultural phenomena …
Conscientiousness And Collegiate Athletes: An Item Response Theory Analysis, Tyler Hall
Conscientiousness And Collegiate Athletes: An Item Response Theory Analysis, Tyler Hall
College Honors Program
The purpose of this study is to examine how the facets (Kitchenham, L. et al., 2019) and aspects (Roberts et al., 2005) of conscientiousness influence collegiate athletes and how this understanding can be applied to the development of athletes and coaches. Like everyone else, student-athletes face daily stressors that can hinder their performance both in the classroom and on the field. Personality traits play a significant role in an individual's ability to manage these stressors (Lopes Dos Santos, M., 2020). This study examined conscientiousness, one of the Big Five Personality Traits defined by McCrae and Costa (1986), which is characterized …
From Amateur To Influencer: The Nil Era Takes Over, Olivia J. Matulich
From Amateur To Influencer: The Nil Era Takes Over, Olivia J. Matulich
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the change of amateur athletics with the rise of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights. For many years, the NCAA followed an amateurism model that prevented student-athletes from earning money, even though their efforts generated major profits through media contracts, sponsorships, and branding. The arrival of NIL in 2021 marked a major shift, allowing athletes the chance to earn money from their personal brand, which redefined the role they play within the collegiate athletic system.
This study looks at NIL from several angles, including its legal background, financial impact, and cultural significance. By reviewing key legal cases …

Perceptions Of Fairness And Competitiveness Amongst Trans Athletes, Roxie Freifeld, Ryley Steggall, Norah Holder, Rebecca Totton
Research Symposium
Recent years have seen a rise in discourse concerning the participation of transgender athletes in collegiate sports. Since 2020, 23 US states enacted laws barring transgender athletes from competing in sports on teams aligned with their gender identity. In February of 2025, President Trump signed an executive order banning transgender women from competing in women’s collegiate sports. This policy was adopted by the NCAA. This study evaluated perceptions towards transgender women competing in collegiate athletics. In this 2x2 between participants’ design study, (n = 216) Prolific participants read a vignette about a college sprinter where the identity (transgender or cisgender …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the presence and extent of the relationship between athletic department success based on SBLive© All-Sports Award Scaled Scores and academic outcomes in Mississippi 4A high schools. Specifically, the study investigates whether SBLive© All-Sports Award Scaled Scores in 4A Mississippi high schools are associated with Mississippi School Accountability System (MSAS) Accountability Scale Scores, Chronic Absenteeism, Incidents of Violence, and Graduation Rates across four school years (2021–2022 through 2024–2025). A quasi-experimental quantitative design utilizing Pearson correlation coefficient (r) analyzes relationships among continuous variables and identifies trends across years, including the impact of Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) reclassification …
Success Or Setback: A Literature Review Of The Association Between Youth Athlete Sport Specialization And Injury Incidence From Adolescence To Adulthood., Kelis Adams
Honors College Theses
For a multitude of reasons, in the United States, present day society is a persistent witness and contributor to the adultification and professionalization of children alongside the activities they engage in. Single-sport specialization in youth sports is one of our most clear and poignant instances of the existence of this subcurrent. But, in recent years, following the uptick in single-sport specialization among youth athletes there has also been a marked increase in sports medicine professionals cautioning athletes and their families of premature commitment to a sole sport due to concerns of physical health risks. As sport typically involves forceful and …
