On October 7, 2023, students from the EMU Archives and Oral History Program recorded the stories of EMU students past and present. Using the EMU Aerie, the Archives’ mobile oral history recording booth, student oral historians captured the formative experiences and perspectives of EMU alums from a variety of campus eras. Here, Early College Alliance student Maya Walker talks about her first day on campus and the initial shock of seeing such a large campus for the first time. She speaks on the importance of her Queer Literature class, and the usefulness of onsite testing during the pandemic.

After nearly vanishing from the Chinese literary world map for thirty years from 1949 to 1979, Eugene O’Neill’s works underwent a reevaluation and resurgence in the reform era of the 1980s. This decade witnessed a wide range of introductions to, research on, translations, and productions of O’Neill’s play in the Chinese theatrical and cultural landscape. Chinese theater practitioners staged some thirty adaptations of O’Neill’s works in both domains of spoken drama and traditional opera, including productions by colleges, state-owned troupes, and independent theater groups. This piece takes a look at Title IX history and policy and the potential impact that teacher educators can have on the athletic landscape, especially as it pertains to girls. History of Title IX and athletics is reviewed. The current situation is reviewed, showing a stagnation of growth of girls’ and women’s sports. New data, collated from coaching directories, is shared and clearly shows a need for improvement in gender representation in coaching. Finally, a path forward to recruit and prepare coaches to coach for gender equity is given.

Gardner-Webb Leads Big South Conference With 339 Students On The Big South Presidential Honor Roll, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb placed 339 student-athletes to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll, announced on Monday, July 31.

To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently completed academic year. GWU had the fourthhighest percentage of eligible student-athletes named to the Honor Roll, with 76.87 percent (339- of-441) student-athletes earning the accolades. The Runnin’ Bulldogs led the conference with its 339 student-athletes earning the award, as the closest school to Gardner-Webb was Campbell with 265 student-athletes being named to the list.

In the aftermath of the USA Gymnastics Scandal, Congress passed the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017 and Empowering Olympic, Paralympic, and Amateur Athletes Act of 2020 to protect athletes from abuse. This comment examines how years of unregulated Olympic Sport controlled by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) created systems that make young athletes vulnerable to abuse. Active foot contact (absence of a braking impulse) during the acceleration phase of athletic sprinting is associated with the motion of the foot before touchdown (TD). Since the identification of braking impulses through force plate measurements is cost-expensive, the aim of this study was to develop a machine learning algorithm to predict active foot contact occurrences based on ankle-mounted accelerometer measurements. Ten recreationally active athletes (three females, seven males) performed 30 sprint-block-starts each, which were used as input to the machine learning model. Quantification of performance is essential to understand performance determinants. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate different performance measures applied to the bobsleigh push start and to discuss the choice of an appropriate measure for research and coaching. Measures based on the change in kinetic energy and based on the change in momentum were calculated for the early acceleration phase during the push start and compared by means of correlation analyses. Both energy-based and momentum-based methods lead to similar results while it is important to consider the athlete and the bob as a system. Further clarification is required …

The purpose of this study was to compare joint kinematics of different active resisted loads upon different phases of the acceleration (similar velocity) of a normal sprint. Fifteen experienced male sprinters performed a 50-m sprint with maximal effort from a start block, followed by a 10, 20, 30m with resisted sprints provided by a robotic pully system that gave resp. 65, 50, 25 and 10% reduction of peak velocity, while joint kinematics were measured. The search for aspects of basketball shooting that characterize successful performance is an area of focus for sports biomechanists. However, the systematic evaluation of these key elements during shooting practice is limited due to the time it takes to collect and/or process the data. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between some of the key kinematic variables extracted from a markerless motion capture system on free-throw shot performance. This study assessed agility ladder drills for the purpose of comparing kinetic characteristics of these drills to one another, and to sprinting and shuffling. Subjects (N=30) performed six agility ladder drills as well as sprinted and shuffled to the left and right over two large force platforms. A repeated measure ANOVA was used to assess horizontal and vertical ground reaction force (GRF) and the ratio of horizontal to vertical GRF, averaged from three steps for each drill. The purposes of this study were to examine the differences in the peak impulses and ground reaction forces (GRF) of the lead and back legs as well as how energy flows (energy absorption, generation, and transfer) in the back hip, front hip, and L5S1 joints during the baseball swing phases between high school and collegiate baseball players. The findings indicate that the mechanical energy flows down the chain from the L5S1 joint to the pelvis into the lead leg during the bat acceleration phase of the swing in both participant groups.
