An Analysis Of The Amount Of Sleep And The Effects It Has On Athletic Capabilities And Routine Tasks In College Athletes, Carly Simonian, Kira Sheahan, Kylie Christensen, Darice Haywood Jan 2020

An Analysis Of The Amount Of Sleep And The Effects It Has On Athletic Capabilities And Routine Tasks In College Athletes, Carly Simonian, Kira Sheahan, Kylie Christensen, Darice Haywood

Concordia Journal of Communication Research

College student athletes are under a lot of pressure to accomplish all that is expected of them which may lead to other areas of their lives being neglected, including sleep. The amount of sleep a student athlete gets is crucial in their accomplishments both off and on the field. The researchers chose to investigate how the amount of sleep an athlete gets affects their day to day life. Specifically, the researchers explored the correlation between the amount of sleep an athlete got and how positively they rated their day through an online daily survey throughout a two week span of …

Between And Behind The Lines: The Life Of High School Coaches, Mary Davis Jan 2020

Between And Behind The Lines: The Life Of High School Coaches, Mary Davis

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this study, I write about the emotional journey of high school athletic coaches’ experiences as they move through their day as teachers, coaches, and spouses/parents. The examination of the emotions and transitions high school coaches experience has been largely unresearched. There have been examinations of teachers, the impact coaches have on athletes, and a coach as a parent, but there is not extensive research on all three roles experienced by one person. High school athletics is a tremendous part of high school, and coaches have a tremendous impact not only on their players, but on the students they teach …

Impact Of Progress Toward Degree On Major Selection For Division I Historically'€¯Black'€¯College'€¯And University Student-Athletes, April Alicia Chestnut

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I student-athletes select or may change their majors to maintain participation eligibility in sports rather than focus on their specific academic interests. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the impact of progress towards degree (PTD) on the degree choices and perceived academic value of the degree received by student-athletes attending HBCUs. The study used Sabatier's and Jenkins-Smith's advocacy coalition framework. The research questions focused on the perceptions and lived experiences of student-athletes, athletic advisors, and athletic administrators on the impact of PTD on major selection. A researcher-developed interview …

Implementation Of Employee Wellness Programming In Siuc Athletic Department, James Morrison Jan 2020

Implementation Of Employee Wellness Programming In Siuc Athletic Department, James Morrison

Research Papers

With longer workdays and the ever-growing technological base of society, inactivity and poor diet have become a staple in western civilization (Sharma & Majumdar, 2009). Between meeting the demands of work, family, and other responsibilities that may intrude on a day-to-day basis, maintaining one’s health can be a challenge. This struggle not only affects an individual’s health, but their external and social life as well, as decreased productivity and missed days of work may also be outcomes of poor health maintenance. The development of employee wellness programs has been an effective way to cope with the resultant health effects brought …

Balancing The Demands Of College And Athletics: First-Generation Female Student Athletes’ Perception Of The College Experience, Adrienne Rodriguez Dec 2019

Balancing The Demands Of College And Athletics: First-Generation Female Student Athletes’ Perception Of The College Experience, Adrienne Rodriguez

Theses & Dissertations

Research Focus. The launch of the 1972 Title IX regulation education amendment arrived at a pivotal time for women in sports. “Title IX recognized the uniqueness of intercollegiate athletics by permitting colleges and universities to have separate and equal athletic programs for women” (Hogshead-Makar, & Zimbalist, 2007, p. 2). As more women began to participate in sports, pressures to perform both competitively and academically presented different challenges for female athletes during their collegiate career. For a female student-athletes to be successful in both academics and athletics, the student-athlete must discover a means to sustain a reasonable balance academically and athletically …
