Social Relationships And Self-Directed Behavior In Hamadryas Baboons (Papio Hamadryas Hamadryas), Melissa C. Painter
Social Relationships And Self-Directed Behavior In Hamadryas Baboons (Papio Hamadryas Hamadryas), Melissa C. Painter
Master’s Theses
Self-directed behavior, such as self-scratching and self-grooming, is a behavioral indicator of anxiety in nonhuman primates. Patterns of self-directed behavior are used to identify social and environmental factors related to primate anxiety. This study explored the social context in which individuals in a captive group of hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) exhibited self-directed behavior. Self-directed behavior in a partner’s presence was predicted to increase with relationship insecurity. More than 130 hours of behavioral observations were conducted on 12 baboons. Self-directed and social behavior were recorded with focal sampling to determine each animal’s self-directed behavior rate in the presence …
Fourth Amendment Anxiety, Kiel Brennan-Marquez, Stephen E. Henderson
Fourth Amendment Anxiety, Kiel Brennan-Marquez, Stephen E. Henderson
Faculty Articles
In Birchfield v. North Dakota (2016), the Supreme Court broke new Fourth Amendment ground by establishing that law enforcement’s collection of information can be cause for “anxiety,” meriting constitutional protection, even if subsequent uses of the information are tightly restricted. This change is significant. While the Court has long recognized the reality that police cannot always be trusted to follow constitutional rules, Birchfield changes how that concern is implemented in Fourth Amendment law, and importantly, in a manner that acknowledges the new realities of data-driven policing. Beyond offering a careful reading of Birchfield, this Article has two goals. First, …
Mental Health In Commercial Aviation - Depression & Anxiety Of Pilots, Maurice C. Dehoff, Stephen K. Cusick
Mental Health In Commercial Aviation - Depression & Anxiety Of Pilots, Maurice C. Dehoff, Stephen K. Cusick
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Two landmark accidents invigorated the discussion regarding pilot mental health. Other incidents may also have a mental health component that is related to, but not the direct cause of, the event. It is suspected that these “other incidents” are much more commonplace and while not catastrophic, erode safety. Depression and anxiety are two commonly occurring mental health concerns. Research indicates that a considerable portion of the U. S. population suffers from some form of mental health issue. Most go undiagnosed and untreated. A similar rate of occurrence appears to be found within the airline pilot population. The stigma of mental …
Modeling The Psychiatric Aspects Of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome And Induced Stress, Danielle Peecher
Modeling The Psychiatric Aspects Of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome And Induced Stress, Danielle Peecher
All Master's Theses
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder in women that is characterized by excess testosterone and is associated with increased risk of infertility. Women with PCOS also show higher rates of depression and anxiety. Modeling PCOS in mice via administration of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) results in physiological alterations that are consistent with the physiological symptoms of PCOS in women. While some studies have investigated behavioral changes in PCOS mouse models, findings have varied. Thus, the current research examined whether a PCOS model with an additional stress factor resulted in behavioral changes. To create a stress condition, subjects were implanted with …

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the effects of a peer-assisted, self-selected physical activity program on depression and anxiety in students at a four-year university, and to explore the various possible mechanisms by which depression and anxiety were affected. These mechanisms included physical activity, self-efficacy, relatedness, competence, and autonomy. A secondary purpose was to examine the benefits of participation for the physical activity buddies who provided the peer-support. In-depth interviews were conducted with three program participants with depression and/or anxiety, six physical activity buddies who supported the participants, and three referring professional healthcare providers. A qualitative data …
Considerations In The Classification Of Orthorexia Nervosa, Bethany Garcia
Considerations In The Classification Of Orthorexia Nervosa, Bethany Garcia
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Orthorexia nervosa has been suggested as a new psychological phenomenon in which an individual restricts their diet to consume only biologically pure and healthy foods. Some have suggested that orthorexia nervosa should be considered a new eating disorder. However, it is unclear at this time if orthorexia nervosa is a new psychological disorder, a variant of an existing psychological disorder (such as anorexia nervosa or obsessive-compulsive disorder), or a sub-threshold disordered eating behavior. The present study examined and compared measures of orthorexia nervosa behavior, explored its relationship to other psychological conditions, and assessed how demographic features are related to the …

Metacognition As A Mental Health Support Strategy For Elementary Students With Anxiety, Kathi Weight
Metacognition As A Mental Health Support Strategy For Elementary Students With Anxiety, Kathi Weight
Education Dissertations
Mental health issues affect learning and performance in profound ways. Schools tend to lack a comprehensive approach to address the needs of students with anxiety, due to the limited training staff receive in mental health identification and support. As teachers work to address barriers to learning, schools must develop a system to fully address the growing needs of students with anxiety. Metacognition plays a significant role in clinical psychology and is used as a mental health intervention and support in clinical settings. The possibility of the application of a specific cognitive strategy to classroom settings in order to support elementary …
Anxious?: Re-Designing Women’S Jewelry To Help Manage Symptoms Of Anxiety Disorders, Nourbanu Feras Hijazi
Anxious?: Re-Designing Women’S Jewelry To Help Manage Symptoms Of Anxiety Disorders, Nourbanu Feras Hijazi
Theses and Dissertations
Anxiety is a common and often stigmatized condition. Destigmatizing mental disorders can positively impact people’s interaction and communication with others and can prompt conversations in which people share their experiences with mental health, leading to improved societal understanding and perception.
My design solution tackles behavioral symptoms of anxiety, specifically two conditions that fall under obsessive-compulsive behavior: Dermatillomania and Trichotillomania. By redesigning women’s jewelry to specialized accessories, my intention is for these objects to help destigmatize these conditions and relieve symptoms of maladaptive behaviors and hurtful impulses. By redirecting these irresistible urges to an external artifact, the objects are designed to …

Examining The Moderating Role Of Anxiety Symptoms On Insistence On Sameness In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Wayne Eric Mason Jr
Examining The Moderating Role Of Anxiety Symptoms On Insistence On Sameness In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Wayne Eric Mason Jr
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) have been a core symptom of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) since discovered in the 1940’s (Kanner, 1943). More specifically, insistence on sameness, which is considered a subtype of RRBs, has been shown to affect children with considered higher verbal skills in this population. In addition, it is well documented that anxiety symptoms commonly co-occur with ASD, and anxiety symptoms (AS) and IS have been linked through previous research. Using archival data, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the conditional effect on anxiety symptoms on the relation between developmental status (DS) and insistence …
What Lies Beneath, Meg Wachs
What Lies Beneath, Meg Wachs
Theses and Dissertations
What is the very first thing you notice about a person? Appearance? What if the first thing you saw was everything that they were trying to hide? We would see every flaw but we would also see every truth. What Lies Beneath is an exploration of interior and exterior and an exposure to the dark and abject inside all of us; the parts we keep hidden and the things that build up until they have no place else to go. Rooted in an examination of the human psyche, my thesis explores the difference between the facade we project to the …
Confidence In Academic Testing: The Effect Of Induced Checking And Anxiety On University Students' Emotional Responses To, And Performance In, Academic Challenge, Elijah Bruner
All Master's Theses
Academic tests such as the American College Testing (ACT), Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), and National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP) have been used to assess academic aptitude. Research suggests that both test anxiety and test emotions (positive and negative) influence academic performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of test anxiety and uncertainty (i.e., re-checking items) on performance and test emotions. It was hypothesized that induced checking and participant anxiety would negatively predict performance and positive testing emotions, and positively predict negative testing emotions. It was also hypothesized that induced checking and anxiety would interact, with …

Food For Thought: The Effects Of Past And Present Food Insecurity On Subjective Well-Being And Child Behavior, Jena C. Styka
Senior Independent Study Theses
Food insecurity arises when one does not have physical, social, or economic access to safe, sufficient, and nutritious food. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (2016), food insecurity affects 15.6 million U.S. households. Its effects go beyond the physical consequences that might arise from not having adequate nutrition, influencing subjective well-being and behavior in both adults and children. This 2 x 2 quasi-experiment investigated how current and prior food insecurity influenced depression, anxiety, stress, life satisfaction, and happiness in parents, as well as how it influenced child behavior. Results indicated that prior experiences of food insecurity resulted in …

Psychometric Properties Of A Modified Moral Injury Questionnaire In A Military Population, Abby L. Braitman, Allison R. Battles, Michelle L. Kelley, Hannah C. Hamrick, Robert J. Cramer, Sarah Ehlke, Adrian J. Bravo
Psychology Faculty Publications
Moral injury (MI) results from perpetration of or exposure to distressing events, known as morally injurious events (MIEs), that challenge moral beliefs and values. Due to the type of involvement in recent military conflicts, many veterans report MIEs that may cause dissonance and, in turn, MI. Although 2 existing measures assess MIEs, neither currently assesses the defining characteristics of MI (i.e., guilt, shame, difficulty forgiving self and others, and withdrawal). The present study reports the initial psychometric test of a modified version (Robbins, Kelley, Hamrick, Bravo, & White, 2017) of the Moral Injury Questionnaire—Military version (MIQ-M; Currier, Holland, Drescher, & …

An Examination Of The Transdiagnostic Role Of Delay Discounting In Psychological Inflexibility And Mental Health Problems, Michael E. Levin, Jack Haegar, Clarissa W. Ong, Michael P. Twohig
Psychology Faculty Publications
Delay discounting is a basic behavioral process that has been found to predict addictive behaviors, and more recently, other mental health problems. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), is a transdiagnostic treatment that appears to alter delay discounting, possibly through reducing psychological inflexibility. The current study sought to further bridge research on delay discounting and ACT by examining the relation of delay discounting to a broad range of selfreported mental health problems and measures of psychological inflexibility. A cross sectional online survey was conducted with 389 college students. Small negative correlations ranging between .09 and .15 were statistically significant between delay …
Anxiety In Menopause: A Qualitative Inquiry, Eleanor Bremer
Anxiety In Menopause: A Qualitative Inquiry, Eleanor Bremer
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Anxiety is one of the mood symptoms experienced by menopausal women; however, anxiety symptoms during menopause have received little attention in the literature despite the potential impact on quality of life. Many of the tools used to evaluate and measure anxiety associated with menopause assume that menopausal anxiety shares similar criteria as anxiety disorders and this may not be entirely true. There are very few studies that have assessed anxiety in the context of menopause leaving the concept of menopausal anxiety not well defined and raising the question: Is menopausal anxiety a unique and distinctly different syndrome? The purpose …

Arachidonoyl Serotonin (Aa-5-Ht) Modulates Exploratory Anxiety-Related Behavior And Tunes Mesolimbic Dopamine Transmission, Timothy Glenn Freels
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Cannabinergic and vanilloidergic signaling are mechanisms of interest for the treatment of anxiety symptoms due to the anxiolytic properties of cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) activation and transient potential vanilloid type 1 channel (TRPV1) inhibition. Arachidonoyl serotonin (AA-5-HT), a dual fatty acid amide hydrolase and TRPV1 inhibitor provides an efficient means of modulating these systems. We therefore examined the effects of AA-5-HT on anxiety- and fear-like behaviors in male low (C57BL/6J; [B6]) and high (BALB/cJ; [BCJ]) anxiety mice in light/dark box (LDB), open-field (OF), and fear extinction (FE) paradigms. AA-5-HT (1 mg/kg) administration did not affect anxiety-related behaviors in the …

A Generative Model Of The Mutual Escalation Of Anxiety Between Religious Groups, F. Leron Shults, Ross Gore, Wesley J. Wildman, Christopher J. Lynch, Justin E. Lane, Monica D. Toft
VMASC Publications
We propose a generative agent-based model of the emergence and escalation of xenophobic anxiety in which individuals from two different religious groups encounter various hazards within an artificial society. The architecture of the model is informed by several empirically validated theories about the role of religion in intergroup conflict. Our results identify some of the conditions and mechanisms that engender the intensification of anxiety within and between religious groups. We define mutually escalating xenophobic anxiety as the increase of the average level of anxiety of the agents in both groups overtime. Trace validation techniques show that the most common conditions …

Exploring Relationships Of Meaning, Co-Occurring Diagnoses, And Attitudes About Substances, Misty Grant
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
It is increasingly important to understand the factors associated with individuals struggling with addiction and their quality of life, especially with those struggling with co-occurring diagnoses (CODs). The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which meaning, and CODs of anxiety and depression predict an individual's attitudes and beliefs about addiction among persons receiving treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs). The theoretical foundation used to guide this study was logotherapy, which emphasizes the importance of increasing meaning in life through choices, while also centering on being able to find meaning in all situations. A cross-sectional correlation design …
The Impact Of Performance Anxiety On Student Nurses In Simulation Settings, Vanessa Nichols
The Impact Of Performance Anxiety On Student Nurses In Simulation Settings, Vanessa Nichols
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The benefits of simulation in nursing education are well established. Yet, there is a paucity of literature on the psychological effects of the performance aspect of a student demonstrating skills in the simulation setting. Vocational nursing students may experience anxiety in the simulation setting that is distinctly different than in other testing settings and it can contribute to withdrawal from a nursing. The purpose of this study, guided by Lazarus' transactional model of stress and coping, was to understand if vocational nursing students experience performance anxiety while demonstrating clinical skills in the simulation setting versus other settings such as the …
Educating Oncology Nurses About The Emotional Impact Of Cancer Diagnosis, Jonnell Ortiz Zayas
Educating Oncology Nurses About The Emotional Impact Of Cancer Diagnosis, Jonnell Ortiz Zayas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Anxiety and depression are common mood disorders in cancer patients, regardless of mental state prior to diagnosis. A gap in the education of oncology nurses in an eastern Caribbean island was discovered regarding their ability to identify anxiety and depression symptoms and to help patients who suffered from these disorders. The purpose of this project was to improve oncology nurses' assessment skills by reviewing appropriate use of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) tool and familiarizing nurses with resources to help patients who score high on the HADS. The Levine conservation model was the theoretical framework for this project. …
The Experiential Effects And Relationships Between Student Anxiety In Music Performance And Classroom Assessment, Jordan Diego Chua
The Experiential Effects And Relationships Between Student Anxiety In Music Performance And Classroom Assessment, Jordan Diego Chua
Dissertations
Both as an art and assessment, music demonstration and performance in test-taking are closely related. Particular traits are shared between performance in test-taking in the classroom and musical performance "on stage." Tests and performances are normally considered a "high-stakes" setting when the quality and perception of one's skill are under critical scrutiny. Since undergraduate and graduate music students experience assessments in both performance and academic areas, this study allowed consideration for the connections where these two areas overlap, and the possible interventions students may have initiated that are effective in stemming or reducing anxiety. Students' experiences regarding Music Performance Anxiety …
The Impacts Of Religious Discrimination Towards Anxiety In Diverse Populations, Sharlaine Marie Ortiz-Diaz
The Impacts Of Religious Discrimination Towards Anxiety In Diverse Populations, Sharlaine Marie Ortiz-Diaz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Previous research has indicated that outcomes of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation could stem from religious discrimination (RLGD). However, there remains an important gap in the current literature regarding RLGD impacts with non-Muslim populations. Further, the moderating effects of sex, race, and national origin (moderating variables [MVs]) have yielded mixed findings concerning anxiety (dependent variable). The intergroup anxiety theory and the integrated threat theory elaborate on perceived threats and potential anxiety of intergroup dynamics. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the role of religious preferences (independent variable), the MVs, and the RLGD-anxiety relationship. The sample consisted of …
