The Association Of Spirituality, Religiosity, Depression, Anxiety, And Drug Use Among Persons Undergoing Methadone Maintenance Therapy, Linda B. Piacentine
Dissertations (1934 -)
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimated 22.2 million (9.1 %) of Americans ages 12 and older abused or were dependent on an illicit substance or alcohol in 2005. Substance abuse often leads to addiction, and is damaging to the health of persons, families, and society.
Using Neuman's System Model as the conceptual framework, it was proposed that addiction weakens person's defenses with resultant loss of health. The person with addiction often also suffers from anxiety, depression, or both, increasing the risk for continued substance abuse and its concomitant negative consequences, such as loss of employment, poor finances, …

Anxiety And Depression : Exploring Associations With Suicidality : A Thesis Based Upon An Investigation In The Burlingame Center For Psychiatric Research And Education At The Institute Of Living (Hartford, Ct) In Collaboration With Dr. Stephen Woolley, Monica Marie Tronsky
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine if anxiety diagnoses were associated with increased risk for suicidality and to examine if comorbid anxiety and depression diagnoses have a synergistic effect on suicidality. In a sub-analysis, we assessed associations between anxiety and/or depression symptoms (versus diagnoses) with suicidality in order to inform a future study. Completed at the Burlingame Center for Psychiatric Research and Education at the Institute of Living (IOL) in Hartford, CT, this quantitative, cross-sectional study involved 20,823 adult inpatients admitted for psychiatric care from 2000-2009. Estimates of effects calculated were odds ratios (ORs) qualified at 95% confidence …

Associations Between Mindfulness And Symptoms Of Anxiety., Leisa L. Wells
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This cross-sectional exploratory study considered the associations between mindfulness and symptoms of anxiety. The participants in this study were 183 undergraduate students at a regional university in the southeastern United States. The general hypothesis was that higher levels of mindfulness would be associated with lower levels of anxiety. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to examine the association between a variety of aspects of mindfulness and symptoms of anxiety while controlling for a variety of demographic and historical variables, including previous experience with meditation. Results suggest that not all aspects of mindfulness were related to anxiety. Of the 12 specific …
Mechanisms Of Anxiety-Depression Co-Occurrence, Lisa Starr
Mechanisms Of Anxiety-Depression Co-Occurrence, Lisa Starr
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Anxiety and depression are highly comorbid, and mechanisms of their co-occurrence remain largely unclear. Several longitudinal studies suggest that anxiety disorders tend to temporally precede depression, but few comorbidity theories integrate this information. Furthermore, it is unclear whether this temporal pattern replicates when examining symptoms on a daily basis (potentially the time frame over which comorbidity mechanisms unfold). In addition, little research has attempted to identify mechanisms through which anxiety leads to later depressive symptoms. For example, anxiety may prompt rumination about one's anxiety symptoms, or may lead individuals to feel hopeless, in turn prompting depressive symptoms. The current study …
Effectiveness Of Counseling For Anxiety And Depression In Mothers Of Children Ages 0-30 Months By Community Workers In Karachi, Pakistan: A Quasi Experimental Study, Niloufer Sultan Ali, Badar S. Ali, Iqbal Azam Syed, Ali Khan Khuwaja
Department of Family Medicine
Background: The prevalence of anxiety/depression is quite high during the perinatal period but unfortunately its detection and treatment have been less than satisfactory. Moreover, many women are reluctant to take pharmacotherapy for fear of excretion of drugs into their breast milk. This study assesses the effectiveness of counseling from minimally trained community health workers in reducing anxiety/depression, the rate of recurrence and the interval preceding recurrence in women during first two and a half years after childbirth.
Methods: In a quasi-experimental study, community women from two under-privileged communities were trained in data gathering, teaching healthy child-rearing practices, basic counseling skills, …
Experience And Regulation Of Positive Emotions As Predictors Of Anxiety And Depression In Adolescents And Children, Ann Schlegelmilch
Experience And Regulation Of Positive Emotions As Predictors Of Anxiety And Depression In Adolescents And Children, Ann Schlegelmilch
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The high rate of comorbidity between anxiety and depression in children and adults raises questions concerning whether these disorders are two distinct disorders or a broad, but unitary construct. Clark and Watson's (1991) tripartite model purports that these disorders can be differentiated by two factors, positive affect (PA) and physiological hyperarousal (PH), in which low PA is unique to depression and PH is specific to anxiety. However, little is known about how specific positive emotions or their various facets may be related to depression and anxiety in children. Using 162 elementary and 148 middle school children (49% male, 66% Caucasian), …

Subjective Anxiety And Behavioral Avoidance: Gender, Gender Role, And Perceived Confirmability Of Self-Report, Carmen P. Mclean, Debra A. Hope
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Commonly reported gender effects for differential vulnerability for anxiety may relate to gender socialization processes. The present study examined the relationship between gender role and fear under experimental conditions designed to elicit accurate fear reporting. Undergraduate students (N = 119) completed several self-report measures and a behavioral avoidance task (BAT) with a tarantula while wearing a heart rate monitor. Gender roles were operationalized as instrumentality and expressiveness, as measured by the Personal Attributes Questionnaire (Spence, Helmreich, & Stapp, 1975). As expected, women reported greater subjective anxiety and were more avoidant of the tarantula than men. Regardless of gender, low …
The Role Of Culture In The Somatic Response Of Peer-Victimized Latino Youth, William Martinez
The Role Of Culture In The Somatic Response Of Peer-Victimized Latino Youth, William Martinez
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
There is emerging evidence that Latino youth report a higher prevalence of somatic complaints than children from other ethnic groups. Although culture has been implicated to explain these somatization differences, few studies have investigated the extent to which cultural factors actually influence the way Latino youth respo0nd to stressful events. The present study employed the problem suppression-facilitation model to posit that a Latino cultural orientation plays a moderational role in the relationship between peer victimization and physical symptoms. The present sample consisted of 134 Latino youth ranging in age from 10 to 14 years old. Analyses were conducted using structural …

Relationships Between Substance Use, Mental Health Problems, And Involvement In School-Based Extracurricular Activities Among High School Students, Kristelle Malval
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Substance use during adolescence is associated with numerous undesirable short term and long term consequences. This study examined rates of substance use, as well as rates of elevated anxiety and depressive symptomalogy, among 138 students attending a predominantly Hispanic, low-SES high school. The current study also examined the complex relationships between adolescent substance use, mental health problems, and involvement in school-based extracurricular activities, among this ethnically diverse sample. Results included that a significant proportion of adolescents in the sample fell in the "at-risk" category for a clinical diagnosis of depression and/or anxiety disorder. Further, those students who reported smoking cigarettes …

Cognitive Biases In Childhood Anxiety Disorders: Do Interpretive And Judgment Biases Distinguish Anxious Youth From Their Non-Anxious Peers?, Melinda Cannon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine cognitive biases in clinically anxious children compared to normal children and to determine if cognitive biases could discriminate anxious youth from non-anxious youth. Two specific cognitive biases were the focus of the present study—interpretive biases (i.e., the tendency to interpret neutral stimuli in a negative way) and judgment biases (i.e., a lowered estimate of one's ability to cope with a threatening situation). Twenty-four youth comprised the anxiety disordered sample and were each matched to two normal youth on four demographic variables (gender, age, ethnicity, and family income level), thus the matched comparison …

Enhanced Psychosocial Well-Being Following Participation In A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program Is Associated With Increased Natural Killer Cell Activity., Carolyn Y Fang, Diane K Reibel, Margaret L Longacre, Steven Rosenzweig, Donald E Campbell, Steven D Douglas
Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs have consistently been shown to enhance the psychosocial well-being of participants. Given the well-established association between psychosocial factors and immunologic functioning, it has been hypothesized that enhanced psychosocial well-being among MBSR participants would be associated with corresponding changes in markers of immune activity.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to examine changes in psychosocial and immunologic measures in a heterogeneous patient sample following participation in a MBSR program.
DESIGN: A single-group, pretest/post-test design was utilized.
SETTING: The intervention was conducted at an academic health center.
SUBJECTS: This pilot study involved 24 participants (aged …

Spiritual Bypass: A Preliminary Investigation, Harriet L. Glosoff, Craig S. Cashwell, Chereé Hammond
Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works
The phenomenon of spiritual bypass has received limited attention in the transpersonal psychology and counseling literature and has not been subjected to empirical inquiry. This study examines the phenomenon of spiritual bypass by considering how spirituality, mindfulness, alexithymia (emotional restrictiveness), and narcissism work together to influence depression and anxiety among college students. Results suggested that mindfulness and alexithymia accounted for variance in depression beyond what is accounted for by spirituality and that all 3 factors (mindfulness, alexithymia, and narcissism) accounted for variance in anxiety beyond what is accounted for by spirituality. Implications for counselors are provided.

The Effect Of Anxiety On The Measurement Of Reading Fluency And Comprehension, Jeffrey A. Tysinger, P. Dawn Tysinger, Terry D. Diamanduros
Georgia Educational Researcher
The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between anxiety and performance on measures of reading fluency and reading comprehension in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. The study found that there is a significant negative correlation between social anxiety and reading comprehension but no significant correlation between social anxiety and reading fluency. These findings further demonstrate the distinction between the cognitive processes that underlie reading fluency and reading comprehension. The results also align with the tenets of Processing Efficiency Theory in that more complex tasks that significantly tax working memory (like reading comprehension) are more likely …

In this study, we compared the effects of using neutral face masks vs non-face pattern masks on amygdala activity to masked fearful faces. Twenty-seven subjects viewed 18 s blocks of either fearful or happy faces masked with either neutral faces or patterns, while their brain activity was measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Results replicated increased amygdala activation to face-masked fearful vs happy faces. In the pattern mask condition, the amygdala discriminated between masked fearful and happy faces, but this effect manifested as a decrease in activation to fearful faces compared to happy faces. This interactive effect between facial expression …

The extent to which a non-sedative dose of chlordiazepoxide (CDP) is able to modify the behavioral responses toward a predator odor was assessed in juvenile rats. Play behavior was suppressed and defensive behaviors were enhanced in the presence of a collar previously worn by a cat, when tested 24 hours later in the same context as that where the exposure occurred, and when tested in a context different than that in which the exposure occurred for up to 3 hours after exposure. CDP had no effect on the ability of cat odor to suppress play when rats were tested in …
Test Anxiety, Stephanie Bemboom, Stephanie France
Test Anxiety, Stephanie Bemboom, Stephanie France
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many children suffer from severe test anxiety that inhibits their performance throughout many years of their education. Personal and parental pressures, a bad testing experience, as well as high-stake testing formats are just some of the causes of student anxiety. We looked at anxiety on two levels: student stresses and teacher prevention. To help students cope with their anxiety, we made a flipbook of fun and engaging physical and mental activities that help lower student stress levels before a test. We interviewed students about their stresses to see if the activities we implemented helped to calm student stresses. We then …

Agt M235t Genotype/Anxiety Interaction And Gender In The Hypergen Study, Sarah S. Knox, Xinxin Guo, Yuqing Zhang, G Weidner, Scott Williams, R Curtis Ellison
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Background
Both anxiety and elevated heart rate (HR) have been implicated in the development of hypertension. The HyperGen cohort, consisting of siblings with severe and mild hypertension, an age-matched random sample of persons from the same base populations, and unmedicated adult offspring of the hypertensive siblings (N = 1,002 men and 987 women), was analyzed for an association of the angiotenisinogen AGTM235T genotype (TT, MT, MM) with an endophenotype, heart rate (HR) in high and low anxious groups.
Methodology
The interaction of AGTM genotype with anxiety, which has been independently associated with hypertension, was investigated adjusting for age, hypertension status, …

Perceived Efficacy Of Marriage Counseling In Tertiary Institutions: A Case Study Of Tai Solarin University Of Education, Ijebu Ode, J.T.B. Oluwatimilehin
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
It has long been recognized that the major causes of difficulties of students are anxieties and psychological stresses (Adeyemo, 2000; Owuamanam, 2000; and Akinleye, 2003). According to Adeyemo (2000), concern over studies, unusual physical complaint and difficulties with interpersonal relationship have often led to successful or attempted suicide among students. Students in Nigeria tertiary institutions have a great need for guidance and counseling. This assertion is largely informed by the cultural conflict between the Western and African values whereby students are engaged in developing both occupational and social identities. This seems to support the view of Owuamanam (2000)who reported that …

This study examines anxiety and level of alcohol consumption among college freshman and sophomore student's to determine if state and trait anxiety are significant factors in high risk alcohol consumption or binge drinking. The State Trait Personality Inventory (STPI) and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) were administered to gather data on anxiety and alcohol consumption level. The investigation seeks to identify specific personality factors in college students' that impact high risk alcohol consumption and binge drinking in the undergraduate population. Specifically, state and trait anxiety are examined to determine their effect upon college freshmen and sophomores drinking practices. …
Shared Anxiety, Shared Identity Exploring The Crisis Of Subjectivity In The Art Object, Misha Wyllie
Shared Anxiety, Shared Identity Exploring The Crisis Of Subjectivity In The Art Object, Misha Wyllie
Theses & ETDs
A poststructuralist notion of subjectivity characterizes the self as inherently decentered and discordant, problematizing the illusion of an autonomous, whole self. Such internal crisis is an apparent flaw in any foreign meaning-making system such as language, or for the sake of this project, the visual language of pop culture. This thesis project explores this crisis of identity through a series of mixed-media sculptures and installations that appropriate elements of pop and consumer culture. Each sculpture conveys this crisis of subjectivity and its conditions, such as anxiety, depression and futility, through narrative and formal paradox. Like Claus Oldenburg and Dana Schutz, …
Structural And Molecular Correlates Of Individual Differences In Anxiety Behavior And The Stress Response, Melinda Miller
Structural And Molecular Correlates Of Individual Differences In Anxiety Behavior And The Stress Response, Melinda Miller
Student Theses and Dissertations
Although many people are exposed to stressful experiences during their lifetime, only 5-35% will be diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). While most animal models of stress are effective at producing behavioral changes in an entire group of animals, they fail to account for individual differences in the human stress response or for the variability in baseline anxiety. Animal models of acute and chronic stress increase anxiety behavior and induce structural and neurochemical changes in brain regions necessary for learning, memory, fear responses, and executive function; the hippocampus, amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). In the following experiments, we measured …

Priming God-Related Concepts Increases Anxiety And Task Persistence, Tina M. Toburen, Brian P. Meier
Psychology Faculty Publications
Research on the relationship between religiosity and anxiety has been mixed, with some studies revealing a positive relation and other studies revealing a negative relation. The current research used an experimental design, perhaps for the first time, to examine anxiety and task persistence during a stressful situation. Christians and Atheists/Agnostics/Others were primed with God-related or neutral (non-God related) concepts before completing an unsolvable anagram task described as a measure of verbal intelligence. The results revealed that the God-related primes increased both task persistence and anxiousness, which suggests that experimentally induced God-related thoughts caused participants to persist longer on a stressful …

Most mammals play, but they do so in a dangerous world. The dynamic relationship between the stresses created by their world and the activity of play helps to explain the evolution of play in mammals, as the author demonstrates in evidence garnered from experiments that introduce elements of fear to rats at play. The author describes the resulting fearful behavior and quantifies the fluctuation in play that results, and then he investigates how these are modified by increased maternal care or the use of benzodiazepines. In conclusion, he discusses how such research can help shed light on the neurobiology underlying …

This study explored the long term impact of white collar environmental crime, i.e., illegal disposal of toxins by ALCOA and GM foundry, on Akwesasne Mohawk Territory. Specifically this study focused on whether toxic contamination was perceived by Akwesasne residents as a chronic stressor, and how residents appraised and coped with the long term consequences of contamination. Data were collected from retrospective interviews using a non random targeted snow ball method. Lazarus's theory of stress and emotion was used to analyze the responses of 47 residents of Akwesasne about environmental contamination. Respondents who were aware of the contamination appraised it as …

Test-Retest Reliability Of Self-Reports Of Depression And Anxiety Among Students With High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jill Williams
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Anxiety and depression are more prevalent in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) than in the general population. Due to their cognitive impairments, and questions concerning the validity and reliability of their responses, it is unknown whether these individuals can accurately self-report their internalizing disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability of self-reports of depression and anxiety amongst children and adolescents with ASDs. The study used a convenience sample of 31 subjects aged 8 to 17 with a diagnosis of high-functioning autism. Self-reports were administered using the Child Depression …

Out-of-school time constitutes a major context of social and emotional development for children across cultures. Because it is not constrained by school attendance, weekend time allows cultural and gender differences in time usage to emerge. In this study, children's weekend activities, choice, and some of the related emotional outcomes were examined for fourth-grade students in four countries. A total of 1,265 children of families from middle socioeconomic status in Bulgaria, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United States completed an activity survey asking them to state their typical activity for each of 12 hours on Saturday, their enjoyment of the activity, and …

To determine the psychosocial and demographic factors related to marital adjustment and emotional symptoms in infertile couples according to gender differences. Materials and methods: The study sample, consisting of 60 primary infertile couples, was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Dyadic Adjustment Scale. The scores derived from men and women were compared according to infertility factor. Multiple regression analysis models were used to explore the linkages between emotional symptoms and marital adjustment. Results: Statistically significant gender differences were noted in affectional expression and sexual satisfaction domains of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (P < 0.05). Our analyses showed that various aspects of marital adjustment have predictive power on anxiety and depressive symptoms of infertile men, especially when the infertility is due to male factor. Conclusion: Results of this study emphasize the importance of psychological and sexual counseling in the course of infertility treatment.
