Project Planning, Margaret Florey
CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
This workshop provides a sound foundation in project planning and development. It is aimed primarily at those people who are relatively new to planning language projects. Over four sessions, participants will identify the project goals and objectives, proposed outcomes, the target audience, and the project team members and their skills and roles. They will map out the activities and projected timeline together with a preliminary implementation plan. We will explore strategic plans and look at how each step of a project fits strategically into wider goals for the language. We consider ethical issues, community protocols and regulations that need to …

Ethnography In Language Documentation And Revitalization, Sarah Shulist, Faun Rice
CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
This workshop will focus on training participants to use ethnographic methodologies in the development and implementation of projects for both language documentation and revitalization. The target audience includes community linguists and academic linguists with an intermediate to advanced level of knowledge about language programs, but without any extensive training in anthropology and ethnography. The goal is to provide this group of language activists with an additional set of tools for use in enhancing the efficacy and comprehensiveness of their documentary and revitalization work.
Documentation Of Orature, Imelda Udoh, Uwemedimo Iwoketok
Documentation Of Orature, Imelda Udoh, Uwemedimo Iwoketok
CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
Orature is an amalgamation of two words: oral and literature. It depicts the creative impulse of the society it evolves from. This artistic expression includes proverbs, riddles, extemporized poems/songs, folktales, childlore, etc. The general observation is that attention has been given to aspects of Orature by adults almost to the exclusion of children’s artistic expression. There is no doubt that some aspects of our collective Orature has been put in print. However, much more is yet to be documented. It is also often not considered that both adults and children draw their experiences from the same setting, they employ the …

Life In Communities, Spike Gildea, Jorge Emilio Labrada
CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
Given the widely recognized danger the world’s languages face at the present time, there has been a major expansion of language documentation and linguistic description, which requires what has been traditionally referred to as linguistic fieldwork. We generally prepare our students to undertake this work through field methods courses but “[w]hile we generally do a very thorough job of teaching how to elicit and analyze data, we often forget to tell them that there is a personal and practical side to fieldwork that can very well derail their research if they are not prepared for it.” (Macauley, 2004:194). The overall …

Spatial Visualization And Language Documentation, Kristine Hildebrandt
Spatial Visualization And Language Documentation, Kristine Hildebrandt
CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
Maps and atlases (collections of maps) can be an important and extremely useful part of the toolkit for examining and interpreting variation and change in language documentation and in projects aimed at maintenance, promotion or revitalization. They allow for orderly and illuminating generalizations to be drawn from often unruly distributions of patterns. They also allow for a birds-eye view of patterns across large populations or large geographic and temporal spaces. Although maps cannot tell the whole story behind languages and varieties, they are one way in which we can provide context or approach explanation for interesting or unexpected patterns or …
Integrating Experimental Methods, Language Documentation, And (Linguistic) Theory, Seunghun Lee, Michal Temkin Martínez
Integrating Experimental Methods, Language Documentation, And (Linguistic) Theory, Seunghun Lee, Michal Temkin Martínez
CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
Language documentation and linguistic theories mutually benefit from cooperation - data from documentation propels linguistic theories, and different theories can inform the collection of language materials. A wide array of rich, naturally occurring data collected in language documentation settings has long informed and been used for the basis for typological assertions and to further linguistic inquiry (Palosaari and Campbell 2011, Himmelmann 2012). On the other hand, O’Grady et al. (2009) use psycholinguistic theory and methods to aid in the documentation and assessment of language fluency that can be used for revitalization efforts. Additionally, the integration of experimental methods in language …

CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
Transcription, the written representation of spoken human language, is vital to any language documentation and revitalization project. This hands-on workshop introduces participants to a variety of different transcription methodologies for various purposes. The workshop primarily focuses two types of transcription: (i) phonetic transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet and (ii) discourse transcription where elements of well-known transcription systems are introduced (Conversation Analysis – developed at UC Santa Barbara). The workshop emphasizes the nuts and bolts of these transcription systems and how to apply transcription practices to documentation and revitalization projects.

The 'Look Of Tibet' Without Religion: A Case Study In Contemporary Tibetan Art In Lhasa, Leigh Miller
The 'Look Of Tibet' Without Religion: A Case Study In Contemporary Tibetan Art In Lhasa, Leigh Miller
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
The artworks and career phases of the Lhasa contemporary artist Gadé illustrate the complex entanglement of religion and the secular in modern Lhasa, while illuminating broader trends in contemporary Tibetan art as a cultural formation of local mediation of modernity’s strong influences. While the past is vital to Gadé, he is driven to “locate traditional Tibetan art in a contemporary context” where it can also be “detached from religion,” raising questions about representations of Tibet and the cultural future. He takes a secular approach to the role of artists in society that, along with his cohorts in the emergent contemporary …

Narratives On Wheels: Mobility, Language, And Representation On Egyptian Roads, Noha Ezz El-Din Firky
Narratives On Wheels: Mobility, Language, And Representation On Egyptian Roads, Noha Ezz El-Din Firky
The Undergraduate Research Journal
In this brief exploration, I try to look at a form of popular expression which is microbuses bumper stickers and to look more specifically at the statements printed on these stickers as a form of public expression, representation, and possibly resistance on the part of their agential producers--the vehicles' drivers. I provide a preliminary content analysis for some of the statements I gathered, as well as look at the context of production and dissemination of these stickers. Finally, I try to argue for regarding these statements as a conscious mode of self-expression and self-representation for people otherwise thought of as …
Abuse And Discrimination Towards Indigenous People In Public Health Care Facilities: Experiences From Rural Guatemala, Alejandro Cerón, Ana Lorena Ruano, Silvia Sánchez, Aiken S. Chew, Diego Díaz, Alison Hernández, Walter G. Flores
Abuse And Discrimination Towards Indigenous People In Public Health Care Facilities: Experiences From Rural Guatemala, Alejandro Cerón, Ana Lorena Ruano, Silvia Sánchez, Aiken S. Chew, Diego Díaz, Alison Hernández, Walter G. Flores
Anthropology: Faculty Scholarship
Background
Health inequalities disproportionally affect indigenous people in Guatemala. Previous studies have noted that the disadvantageous situation of indigenous people is the result of complex and structural elements such as social exclusion, racism and discrimination. These elements need to be addressed in order to tackle the social determinants of health. This research was part of a larger participatory collaboration between Centro de Estudios para la Equidad y Gobernanza en los Servicios de Salud (CEGSS) and community based organizations aiming to implement social accountability in rural indigenous municipalities of Guatemala. Discrimination while seeking health care services in public facilities was ranked …

Eco-Spirituality: Case Studies On Hinduism And Environmentalism In Contemporary India, Vikram Vishnu Shenoy
Eco-Spirituality: Case Studies On Hinduism And Environmentalism In Contemporary India, Vikram Vishnu Shenoy
Honors Theses
India, with its population of 1.3 billion people, is one of the world's fastest growing countries both in terms of population and economy. One consequence of such rapid growth is that India now has levels of environmental pollution that are unprecedented in scale. Hinduism, India's majority religion, is the primary focus of this research. Hinduism is a religious tradition whose roots lie in the ancient Sanskrit Vedas. The Vedas, along with the Upanishads and Puranas, hold teachings of nurturing, caring, and protecting all aspects of the natural world. The cultural dynamics of India have drastically changed over the past two …
Beyond Traditional Ecological Knowledge: Learned Information In Forodhani Park, Jaimie Lynn Mulligan
Beyond Traditional Ecological Knowledge: Learned Information In Forodhani Park, Jaimie Lynn Mulligan
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This ethnographic study examines Traditional Ecological Knowledge in Mji Mkongwe (Stone Town), Zanzibar, and how ecological knowledge shared by locals on the island is formed and is shared among locals in a park setting. Using a framework of political ecology, this study specifically highlights ecological pressures of local population growth, global climate change on a local scale, and local economic changes as the key drivers for the creation and cultural importance of Traditional Ecological Knowledge. To discover both the ecological pressures and the examples of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, I conducted semi-structured, open-ended interviews in Forodhani Park, a public park on …
The Role Of Healing Within A Pacific Northwest Native American Canoe Pilgrimage, Gabriela Gonzalez
The Role Of Healing Within A Pacific Northwest Native American Canoe Pilgrimage, Gabriela Gonzalez
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Building on Jill Dubisch’s identification of pilgrimages as a means for the expression and resolution of a community’s history of suffering (2005) this study examines the Native American Canoe Journey as a venue in which Pacific Northwest Native Americans create and voice community healing. This study emphasizes the profound symbolic role of the pilgrimage as a venue for individual and community healing in which tribes journey up the West Coast for nearly a month, reconnecting with their ancestral ways.

In conjunction with the Minority Health & Health Disparities International Research Training program at San Diego State University, three Linfield students contributed to the ongoing Peru Ethnomedical Project in Trujillo, Peru by:
- Conducting surveys in two neighborhoods on the edge of the city;
- Creating a medicinal plant garden in the Chan Chan archaeological site museum.
Surveys conducted in Moche, Trujillo were part of a larger study supervised by anthropologists Douglas Sharon and Thomas Love. The research aims to evaluate the usage of medicinal plants in rural and urban Peruvian communities. Linfield’s contribution focused on the creation of the medicinal garden …
Effects Of Celiac Disease On Religion And Language, Elizabeth L. Stoeger, Solveig L. Gustafson
Effects Of Celiac Disease On Religion And Language, Elizabeth L. Stoeger, Solveig L. Gustafson
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that prevents people from digesting gluten. The diagnosis of Celiac impacts more than physical health, it irrevocably alters a person’s conception of self. Ordinary activities like airport travel, staying in hotels, and worship become complicated. For example, receiving Communion in the Roman Catholic faith is one of the ways people maintain their close relationship to God. Because the wafers used are made of gluten, those with Celiac are prevented from partaking in this sacred ritual. This leads to increased feelings of isolation and alienation from both the religious community and God. Another way it …
