Food For Thought: Analyzing The Impacts Of Livestock Factory Farming In The United States, Mallory Russo
Food For Thought: Analyzing The Impacts Of Livestock Factory Farming In The United States, Mallory Russo
Student Theses 2015-Present
The practice of large scale factory farming in the United States has raised moral and ethical questions since its establishment in the mid twentieth century. Though a relatively modern development in the field of agribusiness, factory farming has already accounted for drastic damage to both public and environmental health. Factory farming requires the unsustainable use of resources, gives off toxic waste, and poses a serious threat to public health. This paper aims the further analyze those damages, as well as investigate the lack of transparency and political corruption carried out by factory farm industry leaders. Major factory farming companies have …
Molecular Analysis Of Β-Lactamase Genes In Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria, Neisha Medina Candelaria
Molecular Analysis Of Β-Lactamase Genes In Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria, Neisha Medina Candelaria
Honors Projects
The wide overuse of antibiotics in both the medicine as well as agricultural has lead to a problem with antibiotic resistance. This present research experiment aims to identify various environmental bacterial samples to find antibiotic resistant strains. By looking at these strains we are then able to develop a system to monitor how antibiotic resistance spreads and develops over time. We can then compare different bacteria species to identify any similarities and the prevalence of the resistant strains.
The Development, Design, And Testing Of A Remote Sensing System To Measure Cattle Hip Height, Reid Mckie Miller
The Development, Design, And Testing Of A Remote Sensing System To Measure Cattle Hip Height, Reid Mckie Miller
All Theses
The development of a cattle hip height sensor arose from the need to increase the efficiency, accuracy, and precision with which hip height measurements are taken. Eight infrared sensors were used to measure the hip height of cattle in a commercially available chute system. Stationary testing was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the technology without the variability animals naturally impose. A repetition test was conducted as a part of the stationary tests that indicated there was no significant difference found in measured height with movement of the target forward, backward, and center. However, there was a 0.16 inch average …
Genetic Polymorphisms Of The Glucocorticoid Receptor And Interleukin-8 Receptor Genes Are Related To Production Traits And Hair Coat Score In Crossbred Cattle, Avery Deaton
Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The objective of this thesis was to identify polymorphisms in the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and interleukin-8 receptor (CXCR2) genes and to associate genotypes between the above mentioned polymorphisms and production traits in crossbred cattle. The hypothesis was that polymorphisms will exist for GR and CXCR2 genes and will be linked to production traits. Glucocorticoid receptors have been positively associated with higher milk yields, lactose content, feed intake, and feed conversion rates. Interleukin-8 genes are part of the innate immune response and help with many aspects of female reproduction health, such as protecting the embryo from the maternal immune system during …

Farm Food Safety Laws: Fsma Vs. Gap, Shawn Olsen, Karin Allen
All Current Publications
This fact sheet describes the differences in the farm food safety laws, FSMA and GAP. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) includes a Produce Safety Rule that became final in November, 2015 (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2015). The rule establishes minimum standards for the safe growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of fruits and vegetables grown for human consumption. All covered growers will need to comply with FSMA as it is a federal law. GAP is a voluntary audit program designed to verify that produce is grown, packed, handled, and stored as safely as possible.
Agriculture, Climate, And Capitalist World-Economy: Rethinking The Global Crisis, Dayne Feehan
Agriculture, Climate, And Capitalist World-Economy: Rethinking The Global Crisis, Dayne Feehan
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
Our relationship with nature has been constantly changing throughout modern history. The ways in which we interact with extra-human natures in order to grow food and build empires has radically and successively transformed since the sixteenth century. With these transformations, the perception of our interactions with extra-human natures has changed as well. The modern perception of Humans versus Nature is challenged with a new ideological framework. This paper introduces the world-ecological framework, which recognizes the relationships of human and extra-human natures as deeply intertwined and dialectical histories. The world-ecological framework is contrasted with the modernist ontology in the debate of …
Water Quality Of The Cache River Watershed, Arkansas: Contributions Of Agricultural Activity In Sub-Watersheds To Nutrient, Sediment And Lead (Pb) Contamination And Potential Toxicity Implications To Aquatic Organisms, Mary Katherine Kilmer
Student Theses and Dissertations
As the world population grows and agricultural production expands, increased stress is placed on many waterways. Water quality is often degraded and can serve as a source for areas of downstream environmental impacts. Of particular concern is the Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone, a result of agricultural inputs from the Mississippi River Basin. One watershed identified as a potential source for this hypoxic zone is the Cache River Watershed in northeastern Arkansas. This watershed has approximately 67% of its land in row-crop production. Waterways within this watershed have poor water quality because of excessive turbidity, nutrients, pathogens and metals. In …

The Relationship Between Urbanization And Eutrophication In Lake Dianchi Watershed In Kunming, China, Xiaoyu Yin
The Relationship Between Urbanization And Eutrophication In Lake Dianchi Watershed In Kunming, China, Xiaoyu Yin
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Due to the rapid economic growth in China, urban area in the City of Kunming has expanded overwhelmingly since 1970s along with dramatic population growth in Kunming. However, the source of drinking water that people of Kunming has depended on, Lake Dianchi, has been seriously polluted since 1990s. I looked at peer-reviewed literature and categorized them based on type of research method. After collecting and analyzing data from literature, the reverse relationship between urbanization and water quality in Lake Dianchi was concluded; the sources of phosphorus load to Lake Dianchi were mainly from human and agricultural activities.
Bioaerosol Exposures From Three Utah Cattle Operations, Clark Evans
Bioaerosol Exposures From Three Utah Cattle Operations, Clark Evans
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Bioaerosol is a generic term used to describe dusts that are produced by and or contain biological material. These dusts can potentially contain the following hazardous agents; bacteria, viruses, bacterial endotoxins, and/or mycotoxins from mold spores. Respiratory inflammation, allergies, cancers, and infectious diseases can occur from exposure to a variety of bioaerosol agents. Controlling bioaerosol exposures is very complicated due to the limited amount of research available and because there are no established regulatory or authoritative exposure limits.
Three cattle operations, two beef and one Dairy, in Utah were investigated to establish exposure profiles of the full-time employees that directly …
Towards A Cost-Effective Biorefinery : Production Of Activated Carbons From Residual Biomass For Energy Storage Devices., Zachary Dean Herde
Towards A Cost-Effective Biorefinery : Production Of Activated Carbons From Residual Biomass For Energy Storage Devices., Zachary Dean Herde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biomass processing for industrial products and biofuels has gained an increasing presence as society looks to using sustainable resources for manufacturing and renewable fuels for energy. However, these sustainably produced materials and products cannot gain a competitive edge because of the manufacturing expenses that are a result of high process temperatures and pressures. In order to lower these costs, theoretical modeling has described a value-added co-product strategy as one of the best ways to combat high bioprocessing prices. Biomass has been shown to make effective carbons for energy storage devices such as supercapacitors and batteries. These carbons, with the right …
Dynamics Of Nitrate, Phosphorus, And Suspended Sediment Transport In Two Agricultural Streams In Central Illinois, Luke W. Lampo
Dynamics Of Nitrate, Phosphorus, And Suspended Sediment Transport In Two Agricultural Streams In Central Illinois, Luke W. Lampo
Theses and Dissertations
Nutrients such as nitrate and phosphorus are necessary for life, but excessive amounts can be detrimental. Large amounts of nutrients entering bodies of water can lead to hypoxic zones such as the one in the Gulf of Mexico. Nutrients are also problematic in drinking water reservoirs, as high concentrations of nitrate in drinking water can cause health conditions such as blue baby syndrome and high phosphorus concentrations can lead to algal blooms. Suspended sediment leads to reservoir sedimentation, habitat degradation, and is able to transport particulate nutrients. High nutrient and sediment concentrations are a recurring problem in the drinking water …

Does Landscape Connectivity Shape Local And Global Social Network Structure In White-Tailed Deer?, Erin L. Koen, Marie I. Tosa, Clayton K. Nielsen, Eric M. Schauber
Publications
Intraspecific social behavior can be influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. While much research has focused on how characteristics of individuals influence their roles in social networks, we were interested in the role that landscape structure plays in animal sociality at both individual (local) and population (global) levels. We used female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Illinois, USA, to investigate the potential effect of landscape on social network structure by weighting the edges of seasonal social networks with association rate (based on proximity inferred from GPS collar data). At the local level, we found that sociality among …

Nutrient Contamination From Non-Point Sources: Dissolved Phosphate In Surface And Subsurface Waters At Eku Meadowbrook Farm, Madison County, Kentucky, Hunter R. Evans, Reid E. Buskirk, Walter S. Borowski, Jonathan M. Malzone
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Farms are non-point sources for nutrient contaminants that drain into watersheds and contribute to eutrophication and other environmental problems. Eastern Kentucky University’s Meadowbrook Farm raises both crops and livestock, causing dissolved phosphorus in the form of orthophosphate (PO43-) from fertilizer and animal manure to enter surface and subsurface waters, eventually flowing into Muddy Creek, a tributary of the Kentucky River.
We sampled surface water, springs, and water from French drains that emanate from the farm, and also sampled Muddy Creek waters from May through August 2016. Typically, 1 to 2 days after sampling, we colorimetrically measured dissolved …

Aquaponics As A Sustainable Alternative To New Land Reclamation And Conventional Agriculture In Egypt, Hisham Ahmed Samy El Essawy
Theses and Dissertations
Agriculture in Egypt is facing dramatic changes that affect its productivity, and accordingly the Egyptian economy. Egypt started in the 1930s, expanding agricultural land through land reclamation projects. Many of these projects did not perform as expected or planned due to lack of water and other challenges. While land reclamation and conventional agriculture techniques have a lot of technical, social, and economical problems in Egypt; soilless agriculture and aquaponics are being successfully used in other regions for urban food production as a sustainable solution. Aquaponics is a technique that integrates fish and crop productions by bringing aquaculture with hydroponics (soilless …

Temporal Migration Shifts In The Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population Of Whooping Cranes (Grus Americana) Across North America, Joel G. Jorgensen, Mary Bomberger Brown
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Birds are altering the phenology of critical life history events, including migration, in response to the effects of global climate change. Whooping Cranes (Grus americana) are one of the most critically endangered birds in the world. Their remnant population, referred to as the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population, numbers between 300-400 individuals and migrates between the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast and north-central Canada twice each year. Previous analyses suggested Whooping Crane migration was temporally constant in spring and fall. New analyses of observations spanning 1942-2016 show Whooping Crane migration is now occurring earlier in spring by approximately 22 days …
