Development And Evaluation Of Corn-Cowpea Mixtures As Protein Sources For Nigerian Infants., Enoch Nwankwo T Akobundu
Development And Evaluation Of Corn-Cowpea Mixtures As Protein Sources For Nigerian Infants., Enoch Nwankwo T Akobundu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The feasibility of producing a low cost, easy to use, and flatulence-free product from corn and cowpeas for Nigerian children was investigated. Cowpea slurry was naturally fermented for 48 hours at room temperature. The pH dropped from 6.38 to 4.20. In fermentation with the yeast, pichia guilliermondii Y-2075, for 72 hours at room temperature, the pH dropped to only 5.60. Soaking and wet milling resulted in nutrient losses. Drum drying of the product did not significantly reduce lysine levels, 90% being biologically available in most samples. Products with good biological value as measured by PER in excess of 2.0 were …
Partial Purification Of Proteinase Inhibitors From Wounded And Phytophthora Infestans-Infected Tomato Plants., Thomas Edgar Cleveland Iii
Partial Purification Of Proteinase Inhibitors From Wounded And Phytophthora Infestans-Infected Tomato Plants., Thomas Edgar Cleveland Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Proteinase inhibitor activity was measured in the upper leaves of tomato plants, Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., 48 hr after wounding single lower leaves. Tomato selection 33 (TS 33) previously selected for its resistance to tomato race O of Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) deBary was used in this study. Spectrophotometric determination of total trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA) and chymotrypsin inhibitor activity (CTIA) in crude extracts and after affinity chromatography, showed that significantly higher levels of inhibitory activity were present in wounded plants than in unwounded controls. Seven inhibitor peaks designated A through G were resolved by isoelectric focusing of affinity column eluates on …
A Study Of Learning Modules And The Traditional Lecture Discussion Method For Teaching Weed Control Practices To Small Vegetable Farmers., Jesse Harness
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was conducted to develop and evaluate various uses of learning modules and to compare them with the traditional method of teaching weed control practices to small vegetable farmers. One hundred forty eight small farmers were selected for the study from St. Landry Parish in Louisiana and from Copiah, Simpson and Jefferson Davis Counties in Mississippi. They were divided into four treatment groups at random. Treatment I consisted of 63 farmers who were exposed to the modules in a group under professional supervision. Treatment II consisted to 48 farmers who participated in the same weed control program under the …

Energy In Agriculture: Grassland Renovation--Conserves Oil And Energy And Increases Returns From Grass Fields, Edward M. Smith, Larry W. Turner
Agricultural Engineering Energy Series
Fifty-four percent (1.2 billion acres) of land area in the 48 continental United States consists of grasslands, shrublands and open forests. For the most part, there is no alternative use of these land resources in production of food for man other than by way of ruminant animals. Sixty-nine percent (835 million acres) of these land resources is being utilized by grazing animals and forms the basis for a livestock industry which represents 43% of all agricultural receipts in the United States.

Energy In Agriculture: Energy For Swine Facilities Part I: Energy Conservation, Robert L. Fehr
Agricultural Engineering Energy Series
Recently, there has been some concern about energy utilization in agricultural production. Shortages of natural and LP gas have affected many livestock producers, especially swine producers utilizing LP gas as a supplemental heat source in farrowing facilities. These shortages, coupled with an ever*increasing price for fuel and electricity, have encouraged many producers to begin looking for ways to reduce energy consumption.
The Role Of Agriculture In The Nigerian Economy, A. O.G. Otiti
The Role Of Agriculture In The Nigerian Economy, A. O.G. Otiti
Bullion
Agriculture was the mainstay of the Nigerian economy before the so-called oil boom which has brought about a rapid decline in agricultural production, virtual stagnation in the rural economy, marked movement of population from the rural to urban centres and high cost of food items. The article examines some recent developments in the agricultural sector of the Nigerian economy. It also discusses some of the role of Central Bank of Nigeria in promoting agriculture through adequate funding.

Agricultural Development And Potential Markets In Singapore, Malaysia And Indonesia - Report Of A Study Tour, K R. Rutter
All other publications
The study tour of Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia was undertaken as part of the Government of Western Australia'a policy to broaden overseas markets for agricultural products. Preliminary examinations of these economies suggest that each represents a potentially large market given their large populations and levels of foreign reserves. Malaysia and Indonesia in particular have large reserves of petroleum, minerals and timber which provide their economies with the necessary foreign reserves to finance imports. Singapore relies on its strategic position as and entrepot port for its foreign reserves.
