Phylogeny Of Acridocarpus-Brachylophon (Malpighiaceae): Implications For Tertiary Tropical Floras And Afroasian Biogeography, Charles C. Davis, Charles D. Bell, Peter W. Fritsch, Sarah Mathews

Faculty Publications

A major tenet of African Tertiary biogeography posits that lowland rainforest dominated much of Africa in the late Cretaceous and was replaced by xeric vegetation as a response to continental uplift and consequent widespread aridification beginning in the late Paleogene. The aridification of Africa is thought to have been a major factor in the extinction of many African humid-tropical lineages, and in the present-day disparity of species diversity between Africa and other tropical regions. This primarily geologically based model can be tested with independent phylogenetic evidence from widespread African plant groups containing both humid- and xeric-adapted species. We estimated the …

Why Redraw The Map Of Africa: A Moral And Legal Inquiry, Makau Wa Mutua Jan 1995

Why Redraw The Map Of Africa: A Moral And Legal Inquiry, Makau Wa Mutua

Michigan Journal of International Law

The author argues in this Article that the post-colonial state, the uncritical successor of the colonial state, is doomed because it lacks basic moral legitimacy. Its normative and territorial construction on the African colonial state, itself a legal and moral nullity, is the fundamental reason for its failure. The author argues that, at independence, the West decolonized the colonial state, not the African peoples subject to it. In other words, the right to self-determination was exercised not by the victims of colonization but their victimizers, the elites who control the international state system.

Perestroika African Style: One-Party Government And Human Rights In Tanzania, John Quigley Jan 1992

Perestroika African Style: One-Party Government And Human Rights In Tanzania, John Quigley

Michigan Journal of International Law

The one-party systems in Africa have drawn negative reactions from Western States that provide economic aid. The article assesses the one-party system in light of international human rights law and asks whether aid-giving States must consider whether one-party rule in recipient States violates international standards. In this connection, the article asks whether the rights of association and political freedom as developed in Europe can fairly be applied to Africa, given its historical experience.

Selected Sources Of Funding For The Third World Educational Projects, Joseph M. Ndisya Jan 1984

Selected Sources Of Funding For The Third World Educational Projects, Joseph M. Ndisya

All Master's Theses

A hundred philanthropic foundations were surveyed with an aim to find out their attitudes toward the educational growth in the developing countries. This was done in order to have an idea of the percentage that would reply positively that they would consider project proposals seeking funds for continuous educational growth in such countries. Of those that replied to the questionnaires, about 50% replied positively thereby agreeing that they would consider such proposals. Hence those developing countries of Latin America, Asia Minor, and Africa could seek more funds to keep their educational development growing a bit faster.

Refugees, Law, And Development In Africa, Peter Nobel Jan 1982

Refugees, Law, And Development In Africa, Peter Nobel

Michigan Journal of International Law

This article concerns those large movements of people in Africa, which have been called the "African refugee problem." However, large and intriguing migrations of populations have occurred in Africa for centuries. The earliest migrations reflected the spread of culture, the growth of trade and the development of roving early kingdoms. The unique history behind the refugee dilemma, however, begins with the instability spawned by slave trading and colonialism. Sensitivity to these eras heightens an understanding of why today's Africa is wrought with economic crises, territorial disputes, unnatural frontiers, misfit ethnic combinations, and more refugees than any other continent. Against this …

From Tokyo To Oslo, Won Yong Ji Dec 1971

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran World Federation's Commission on Church Cooperation sponsored an international consultation in Tokyo with some 150 people, from April 29 to May 4, 1971, under the theme "The Role of Lutheranism in an Ecumenical Age." It was the first sizeable gathering of such a nature since the recent restructuring of the Lutheran World Federation at its Evian Assembly in 1970. That it was held in Asia was also noteworthy.

From June 6 to 12, 1971, the LWF Executive meeting occurred in Oslo. It was also the first enlarged meeting (more than 100 participants) of the top governing body of …
