Experimental Demonstration Of A Laboratory Scale Packed Bed Reactor For Thermochemical Energy Storage Using Embedded Heating Elements, Zachary Monem
Experimental Demonstration Of A Laboratory Scale Packed Bed Reactor For Thermochemical Energy Storage Using Embedded Heating Elements, Zachary Monem
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Thermochemical energy storage (TCES) is an emerging technology that is being studied as a carbon-neutral renewable alternative to conventional methods of large-scale power generation, such as the utilization of fossil fuels. TCES makes use of thermochemical materials to store and discharge energy in two-step reversible chemical reactions. Among the most promising TCES materials are metal oxides, which possess significantly higher energy storage densities compared to other TCES materials; consequently, thermochemical reactors are used to store and discharge large amounts of energy during reduction-oxidation cycles using metal oxide materials. The current work focuses on the design and experimental demonstration of a …

Coastal urban areas are increasingly exposed to flooding driven by more frequent and intense rainfall events, rising sea levels, and expanding impervious surfaces. Norfolk, Virginia, a low-lying coastal city with aging stormwater infrastructure, faces heightened vulnerability to these hydrologic pressures. This study evaluates the hydraulic performance of an existing urban detention basin within the Edgewater–Larchmont catchment under 10-, 50-, and 100-year, 2-h design storms using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). Simulations were conducted for both pre- and post-development conditions to assess changes in peak discharge, storage capacity, and water level dynamics. Results show that urbanization, …

A strong consensus has taken hold in the legal academy. Criminal Justice Localism, espoused by scholars of every stripe, promotes greater local control of every facet of the criminal justice system. But Criminal Justice Localism largely overlooks an institution that plays a critical role in the criminal justice system, and which has been the subject of intense public criticism: the police. That oversight is remarkable for two reasons. First, calls for increased local control of the police seem to ignore that America operates one of the most—if not the most—decentralized policing models in the world, with its thousands of local, …
Federated Learning In The Era Of Foundation Models, Guangyu Sun
Federated Learning In The Era Of Foundation Models, Guangyu Sun
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The emergence of large-scale foundation models has reshaped computer vision and multi-modal learning, but their substantial computational and communication demands pose significant challenges for deployment in federated learning (FL) systems. Federated learning enables collaborative model training across decentralized clients without sharing raw data, offering strong privacy guarantees. However, adapting foundation models in FL remains difficult due to communication bottlenecks, heterogeneous data distributions, limited device resources, and scarce labeled data. This dissertation presents a unified line of research that addresses these challenges through four complementary frameworks, progressively advancing the efficiency, personalization, and practicality of foundation model adaptation in federated settings.

Between The Living And The Dead, Leona Strong
Between The Living And The Dead, Leona Strong
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Between the Living and the Dead is a collection of short stories and flash fiction that explores loss, generational abuse, abandonment, the sometimes brutal power of familial ties, and love in its many forms—both good and evil. This thesis aims to tease out, in the reader, moments of reflection, compassion and revelation. “Falling,” centers on a mother’s grief after her son dies by suicide and her attempt to move beyond perceived culpability and shame. She does this by jumping from a plane to embody his last moments and make the same decision…to live or to die. “And Baby Makes One,” …

The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness to training intervention of a pain-anchored capacity threshold, the Physical Working Capacity at the Pain Intensity Threshold (PWCPIT), as a practical submaximal marker of endurance-related exercise tolerance. Study one examined the test-retest reliability of pain-based, perceptual, and physiological physical working capacity measures in recreationally active men using a standardized multi-bout cycling protocol, with pain intensity responses demonstrating strong reproducibility and low measurement error, supporting the stability of pain-anchored thresholds when standardized procedures are applied. Study two evaluated the validity of PWCPIT by examining pain …
Threads Of The Past: Exploration Of Banal Medievalisms In Russia's Invasion Of Ukraine, Evan Garrett Wallace
Threads Of The Past: Exploration Of Banal Medievalisms In Russia's Invasion Of Ukraine, Evan Garrett Wallace
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
This dissertation examines how medieval historical narratives circulate within contemporary Western digital discourse surrounding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russian political rhetoric has frequently invoked the medieval polity of Kyivan Rus’ to assert civilizational continuity between the medieval past and the modern Russian state. While these claims have been widely discussed in political and media contexts, less attention has been given to how such narratives appear within everyday online discourse. This study investigates how medieval references are mobilized, circulated, and interpreted within social media environments during the early conflict.
The research draws on a dataset of approximately 160,000 tweets collected from …
Unmasking Pentastomes: Generating Genomic Resources For Enigmatic Parasites, Stephanie Lyn Villella
Unmasking Pentastomes: Generating Genomic Resources For Enigmatic Parasites, Stephanie Lyn Villella
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The introduction of invasive species can disrupt ecosystems not only through competition and predation but also by introducing novel pathogens to naïve host populations. In the southeastern United States, the invasive Burmese python (Python bivittatus) has been implicated in the introduction of the pentastome parasite Raillietiella orientalis, which has been associated with increased parasite burdens and mortality in native snakes. Despite their ecological significance and ancient evolutionary history, pentastomes remain poorly represented in genomic databases, limiting efforts to understand their evolutionary origins, host–parasite interactions, and mechanisms underlying parasite emergence. This study addresses these gaps by generating the …

The Lifecycle Of The Educator: Bridging Fragmented Pathways Across Writing Center And Composition Pedagogy, Emma S. Weis
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Graduate students are frequently positioned as instructors of record in foundational writing courses, yet preparation for these roles is often distributed across institutional sites, including writing centers, pedagogy courses, and mentorship opportunities. This thesis examines educator development across successive institutional roles, tracing how instructional responsibility is encountered and negotiated within writing center and composition studies. Through autoethnographic tracing, this research considers how progression is experienced in practice, with attention to the influence of institutional design on the movement between stages.
Paired with this narrative approach, a rhetorical analysis of institutional artifacts draws upon experiences at Stetson University and the University …
Dynamics Of Household Food Insecurity Vulnerability: Examining Health, Functional Limitations, And Income Stability, Renita Washburn
Dynamics Of Household Food Insecurity Vulnerability: Examining Health, Functional Limitations, And Income Stability, Renita Washburn
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Household food insecurity is a multidimensional issue affecting millions of households in the United States. While research has established that low income and poor health or functional limitations can increase the risk of food insecurity, current approaches do not fully capture these dynamic processes to identify long-term vulnerability. Specifically, income-based measures rely on static thresholds that miss instability, potentially underestimating risk. Gaps also remain in understanding persistent food insecurity, including how functional limitations (difficulties with activities like bathing, shopping, or managing finances) are associated with insecurity over time. These functional limitations can impact both economic factors (such as the ability …

and site fidelity, making mortality difficult to distinguish from redistribution. We developed a behaviorally explicit framework to separate true mortality from changes in availability caused by movement and redistribution. We evaluated this problem for juvenile green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) captured at the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant intake canal on Florida’s Atlantic coast using a multi-decade capture–mark–recapture record spanning 1977 - 2023. Hidden Markov Models classified individuals into latent habitat-use strategies (Nomadic, Resident, and Transient) based on capture timing and body size. Across both species, these strategies captured consistent differences in site fidelity and recapture …
Resources And Coping Strategies In Adverse Work Situations: A Person-Centered Approach, Chad Yagey
Resources And Coping Strategies In Adverse Work Situations: A Person-Centered Approach, Chad Yagey
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The resilience process model highlights an approach to how people mobilize their resources to cope and positively adapt in the face of adversity. Leveraging Conservation of Resources (COR) theory and the Work Home Resources Model (WHRM), I aim to uncover the extent to which resilience capacity (resources) and resilience enactment (coping) influence outcomes of resilience, offering one of the first empirical tests of the resilience process model. Specifically, COR theory posits that the more psychological resources someone has, the more successful they are in coping. I challenge this notion by examining whether specific profiles of the combination of resources available …
Ecological And Evolutionary Responses To Environmental Change In Two Large North American Mammals, George Zaragoza
Ecological And Evolutionary Responses To Environmental Change In Two Large North American Mammals, George Zaragoza
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Climate change and urbanization are resulting in rapid shifts in ecosystems. The effects of these changes are complex, and understanding how species respond is critical for predicting their impacts on genetic diversity and evolution, as well as changes in habitat suitability. Species can respond to these changes in two major ways: through behavioral or genetic adaptation, or by moving to more suitable habitat as conditions change. Adaptive genetic change, in particular, can support behavioral and physiological responses that enable species to persist in novel or changing environments, and understanding these changes can help predict how species will respond to anthropogenic …
Cfd Analysis Of A Full Heat Exchanger Between Ammonia And Supercritical Co2 In Aviation Application, Mairah Ahmed
Cfd Analysis Of A Full Heat Exchanger Between Ammonia And Supercritical Co2 In Aviation Application, Mairah Ahmed
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The aviation industry’s transition toward lower-carbon propulsion systems has accelerated interest in alternative fuels, including ammonia–hydrogen fuel blends. In this work, a supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle is integrated with the exhaust stream of a turbofan engine to recover waste heat and utilize it for ammonia preheating and cracking. The recovered thermal energy raises the ammonia temperature to the level required for catalytic decomposition, enabling onboard hydrogen production. The proposed architecture combines ammonia cracking with a high-bypass, two-shaft turbofan engine representative of the propulsion system employed on the Boeing 737 MAX 8. This approach addresses the challenges associated with onboard hydrogen …

Survivors Of Historical Intergenerational And Familial Trauma Scale For Black American Descendants Of Enslaved People: A Development And Initial Validation Study, Loryn Chás Kimbrough
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Despite extensive research documenting cultural and racialized trauma, no validated assessment tool had previously captured the intrafamilial mechanisms of trauma transmission specific to the BADEP population, whose trauma lineage is rooted in slavery. The present study addresses this gap through the development and initial validation of the Survivors of Historical Intergenerational and Familial Trauma Scale (SHIFTS), a culturally grounded instrument designed to measure the transmission of historical trauma (HT) and ongoing intergenerational trauma (IGT) among Black American Descendants of Enslaved People (BADEPs). The SHIFTS examines how HT gives rise to the continued transmission of two interrelated legacies: survival-based and trauma-rooted …
Utilizing Coal For Mesophase Pitch-Based Carbon Fiber Production: Precursors, Processes, And Progress, Christina M. Thompson
Utilizing Coal For Mesophase Pitch-Based Carbon Fiber Production: Precursors, Processes, And Progress, Christina M. Thompson
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Graphitic materials possess unique properties due to the unique combination of layered crystalline structure and carbon’s low atomic weight. High performance carbon fiber is one such example, displaying exceptional strength-to-weight ratios, stiffness, and thermal and chemical resistance. These properties render high performance carbon fiber a critical structural reinforcement material in the manufacture of composites across various industries, such as for automotive and aerospace applications. However, balancing fiber performance with precursor and processing costs remains a challenge. As alternative carbonaceous feedstocks are explored, coal has gained interest for utilization in graphitic products as a relatively abundant and low-cost source of aromatic …

Elucidating The Impacts Of Non-Covalent Interactions In Organic Materials Through A Multiscale Computational Approach, Sashen A. Ruhunage
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Noncovalent interactions (NCIs) in π-conjugated organic materials serve as tunable levers that influence molecular structure and intermolecular interactions in the condensed phase and, in turn, impact the electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of these materials. NCIs include attractive dispersion, electrostatic, and induction interactions, as well as repulsive exchange interactions. However, how to design materials with NCI considerations remains an open question across many fields. Here, we seek to provide an electronic and atomistic perspective on these interactions through multiscale simulations to aid materials design, processing, and performance optimization. In this study, we investigate NCIs and their effects across various systems …

Student Familiarity With The Periodic Table Of The Elements: Results From Cued-Recall And Eye-Tracking Assessments On Memory, Victor A. Okuo
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Learning element symbol–name associations and the spatial organization of elements on the periodic table is a foundational step in learning chemistry, supporting later understanding of chemical formulas, equations, bonding, and stoichiometry. Although students often rely on memorization strategies to learn periodic table content, this task is challenging due to the large number of elements and the apparent ambiguity in matching some element symbols to their names.
This study explores students’ recall of element names when given element symbols as cues and their knowledge of element locations on the periodic table when given element names as cues. The study also examines …

Introduction: Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment modality for individuals with morbid obesity, providing significant and durable weight loss and comorbidity resolution. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor agonists have shown promise as weight loss drugs, in addition to their use in the treatment of metabolic disorders. While multimodal weight management is the standard of care for individuals with morbid obesity, the benefit of antecedent GLP-1 therapy prior to bariatric surgery has not been well-studied. The objective of this study is to conduct a clinical trial testing the hypothesis that preoperative treatment with a dual GLP-1/glucose-dependent insulinotropic …

Background: The ReCePI randomized, controlled trial compared amustaline/glutathione pathogen-reduced (PR) and conventional red blood cell (RBC) transfusions in cardiac surgery. Study design and methods: We performed a post-hoc analysis of hemoglobin (Hb) utilization and safety outcomes. Hb content of study RBCs was measured at manufacture. Subject Hb levels, estimated blood loss and blood product use were recorded during and for 7 days post-surgery. Acute kidney injury (AKI) incidence was graded over 7 days, and adverse events were assessed for 28 days. Results: PR-RBCs contained 5.2% less Hb (mean [SD] Test 58.1 [6.5] g; Control 61.5 [6.8] g Hb, p <.001) due to manufacturing volume losses. Four hundred fifty-six PR- and 524 conventional RBCs were transfused to 159 Test and 162 Control subjects, respectively. Mean subject baseline and post-surgery Hb levels, and blood loss were not different between groups. Test subjects tended to require fewer total RBCs (3.5 [2.7] Test vs. 4.0 [3.5] Control, p =.08) resulting in 17.6% significantly less mean total Hb transfused (Test 203.2 g; Control 246.8 g Hb, p =.01). The proportions of subjects transfused with, and the number of platelet and cryoprecipitate units transfused were not different. Test subjects received less plasma (2.3 [1.8] units Test vs. 3.5 [3.8] Control, p =.03). Overall incidence of adverse events and AKI were not clinically different. Imbalances in AKI severity (Grade III Test 15/159 [9.4%]; Control 7/162 [4.3%], p =.07) may suggest under-transfusion in the highest-risk Test subjects. Discussion: Test patients required less transfused Hb than control subjects to maintain equivalent daily hemoglobin levels following similar blood loss.

Introduction: Prolonged invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) after lung transplantation is an appealing early prognostic outcome as it can be reproducibly assessed both prospectively and retrospectively. Whether use of IMV at 72 h after lung transplantation is associated with post-transplant graft survival is unknown. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 1511 participants in the multi-center Lung Transplant Outcomes Group cohort (2011–2018). Using Cox proportional hazards models and restricted mean survival time, we investigated whether IMV at 72 h was associated with post-transplant graft survival. We secondarily evaluated whether IMV at 72 h was concordant with severe primary graft dysfunction …

Background – Sepsis survivors commonly suffer from chronic Post-Sepsis Syndrome (PSS). To understand the mechanisms of PSS, it is critical to utilize appropriate animal models. While cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) is a widely used model of sepsis, a concern exists regarding its suitability for studying long-term outcomes. Alternatively, we previously optimized a highly reproducible murine cecal slurry (CS)-injection model of sepsis. The objective of this study was to compare the suitability of CS and CLP models for investigating PSS. Methods – Male 4-month-old C57BL/6 mice were divided into 7 groups: (1) Naïve control; (2) Sham: laparotomy control; (3) CL: …
The Federalism Canons As Ordinary Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia, Bradford R. Clark
The Federalism Canons As Ordinary Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia, Bradford R. Clark
Journal Articles
From the article
Scholars remain generally skeptical of substantive canons of statutory interpretation even as courts continue to employ such canons in important cases. Unlike semantic canons, which help judges discern the best meaning of statutory text in context, substantive canons provide tiebreakers when the text is unclear or require special clarity in order for the text to perform certain functions. Among the substantive canons, the so-called “federalism canons” have been singled out for special scrutiny. The federalism canons are a family of canons that require courts to avoid interpreting an act of Congress to divest states of certain sovereign …
Faces Of Formalism, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski
Faces Of Formalism, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski
Journal Articles
Formalist approaches to legal interpretation, such as textualism and originalism, are ascendant in federal statutory and constitutional law. Yet with success have come uncertainty and dissatisfaction. Formalists and their critics observe that textualism and originalism can seem as open-ended as the purposive and dynamic methods they were supposed to replace. This Article tries to diagnose the source of this discontent. It does so by identifying two different faces of formalist interpretation: the formalism of authority—adherence to original sources of law—and the formalism of method—constraint through predictable, rule-bound interpretation. Defenses of formalism often assume these two paths to constraint run together, …
