Measuring The Efficiency Of The Arts And Culture Sector Relative To Gdp: A State-Level Analysis Of The United States, Ameerkhan Jaffar Khan Khader Khan

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Arts and cultural production contributed $1.17 trillion to United States gross domestic product in 2023, 4.2% of the national total, but that contribution is spread very unevenly across states, and the official statistics describe how large the sector is rather than how efficiently it operates (Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024). This study asks how efficiently each state convert growth in arts and culture employment into growth in value added, how many inputs the efficiency model can carry before it stops distinguishing 51 observations, and whether observable state characteristics explain the differences found. The analysis uses 2023 state-level data for all …

“Thou Hast Taught Me, Silent River, Many A Lesson, Deep And Long”: Metabolism, Development, And Evolution As Team Sports, Scott F. Gilbert

We recognize three great fluxes in nature. First there is the metabolic flow of molecules that pervades our cells and which creates organisms. Second, there is the developmental flow of cells that is our cycle of life. Third, there is the evolutionary flow of genes, organisms, and populations from the first single-celled prokaryotes to the extensive biodiversity present on earth today. Recent studies have shown that organisms are consortia of several species acting together. What we had thought of as metabolism based on a single genome is actually the co-metabolism of more than one species. What we had thought as …

Animals have evolved escape behaviors to survive. Freshwater planarians have many predators, including conspecifics in cannibalistic species such as Dugesia japonica. When agitated, planarians escape via a locomotory behavior called “scrunching”, whereby the planarian periodically elongates and contracts its whole body. Current understanding is that planarians move forward when they scrunch. However, when transversely cutting D. japonica, we observed that while head pieces scrunched forward, tail pieces scrunched backward instead. Previous work has shown that forward scrunching is a conserved planarian escape behavior in response to transection and adverse stimuli such as low pH, noxious heat, hydrogen peroxide, …

Using “Big Data” And Non-Linear Machine Learning To Infer Groundwater Contamination Mechanisms Across A Spatially Extensive, Geologically Heterogeneous Region, Ioan Petculescu, Anna Majury, R. Stephen Brown, Kevin Mcdermott, Paul Hynds Jan 2026

Using “Big Data” And Non-Linear Machine Learning To Infer Groundwater Contamination Mechanisms Across A Spatially Extensive, Geologically Heterogeneous Region, Ioan Petculescu, Anna Majury, R. Stephen Brown, Kevin Mcdermott, Paul Hynds

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Groundwater accounts for approximately 98% of available freshwater, with >2 billion people relying on it as a primary drinking water source. Notwithstanding its importance, specific groundwater quality parameters - namely microbial concentrations and non-Escherichia coli coliforms (NEC) - remain understudied. The current study sought to address this gap by modelling three distinct Contamination Indices (CI) corresponding to E. coli concentration, NEC concentration, and the NEC:E. coli concentration ratio. CIs were developed for south Ontario (115,693 km2) using ∼1 million samples from ∼290,000 wells collected between 2010 and 2021. To permit modelling, CIs were linked to 50 subregion-specific variables …

Segmentation Of Household Behavioural Types Associated With Food Waste Generation In The Republic Of Ireland, Courage Y. Krah, Paul Hynds, Anushree Priyadarshini Jan 2026

Segmentation Of Household Behavioural Types Associated With Food Waste Generation In The Republic Of Ireland, Courage Y. Krah, Paul Hynds, Anushree Priyadarshini

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Despite the growing number of interventions aimed at reducing household food waste (HFW), many remain overly generalised and fail to adequately account for the heterogeneous routines, motivations, and disposal contexts that shape waste generation. This study, therefore, aimed to identify behavioural types in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) based on HFW habits to inform more targeted and effective reduction strategies. Using survey data from 966 households, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering were applied to identify co-disposal patterns of food groups and to segment households into behaviour clusters. The PCA identified four co-disposal patterns, while clustering yielded four household …

Editorial: Antimicrobial Resistance In Aquatic Environments — Bridging Surveillance, Ecology, And One Health Action, Jean O'Dwyer, Paul D. Hynds, Brigid Hooban, Michael Ryan, Liam P. Burke

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is widely recognised as a majorglobal threat, with health and economic consequences extending acrossand overlapping with human, animal, and environmental systems [1].Perhaps the best example of a One Health challenge, the so-called AMR“silent pandemic” is a complex problem driven by anthropogenic activities, which must be tackled across the three realms [2]. Efforts toaddress AMR have historically focused on clinical and agricultural settings, however, there is increasing recognition that environmentalpathways play a critical role in the emergence, persistence, anddissemination of antimicrobial resistant organisms (AROs) and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) [3,4]. Aquatic environments are ofparticular importance as they receive …

A Glimpse Of Early Ellensburg, Washington From The 1980'S Excavations At 45kt800, Leah M. Shenyer

All Master's Theses

The Robber’s Roost site, located in the town of Ellensburg, Washington, was excavated in a partnership between Central Washington Archaeological Survey and Kittitas County Youth Services in the summers of 1986 and 1988. In 2023, the collection consisted of 110 boxes of artifacts including bottle glass, ceramics, leather, and faunal remains, with no significant prior analysis and little information on the dig itself. The purpose of this thesis is to document this poorly-known excavation project and gain a better understanding of Ellensburg’s history through analysis of the artifacts recovered. I compiled all the available paper records and communicated  with past …

Hybridization Of Genetic Algorithm, Principal Component Analysis And Deep-Learning For Networks Intrusion Detection Systems, Mostafa A. R. Eltokhy, Hend M. A. Mahmoud, Mohammad Sammany Jan 2026

Hybridization Of Genetic Algorithm, Principal Component Analysis And Deep-Learning For Networks Intrusion Detection Systems, Mostafa A. R. Eltokhy, Hend M. A. Mahmoud, Mohammad Sammany

Trends in advanced sciences and technology

With cyber-attacks on the rise, the demand for precise and efficient Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) is more critical than ever. Traditional machine learning methods struggle with high false alarm and poor detection rates. IDS are crucial for creating secure digital environments by classifying and responding to network intrusions. However, the large volume of inputs for classification often leads to reduced accuracy and misclassification errors. To address this problem, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to optimize the number of classifier inputs, enhancing simplicity without compromising accuracy. A significant challenge in PCA for feature selection lies in determining the best cutoff …

Chemical And Thermal Degradability Of Nano-Al2o3 And Mwcnt-Enhanced Jojoba And Castor Oils For Sustainable Machining Application, Basma Abdelmoniem, Abdelhay M. Abdelhay, Nariman E. Elbaly, Mohamed O. Helmy, Azza Barakat

Trends in advanced sciences and technology

In this work, castor and jojoba oils were used to prepare nanofluids. Medium molecular weight carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and 0.1 wt% Al2O₃ were used in two process steps. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used as a surfactant. Single and hybrid nanoparticle systems were developed to improve homogeneity. The chemical stability and interfacial interactions of the prepared nanofluids were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results showed that neither alumina (Al2O₃) nor multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) affected the chemical structure of the lubricant. To ensure the thermal stability of the modified oils at temperatures up …

Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste Components: Modeling Biogas Production, Opeyemi E. Adelegan Jan 2026

Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste Components: Modeling Biogas Production, Opeyemi E. Adelegan

Civil Engineering Dissertations

Food waste constitutes the single largest component of municipal solid waste landfilled in the United States — approximately 22% of 292.4 million tons generated in 2018 — and its anaerobic decomposition releases methane, a greenhouse gas with global warming potential approximately 27–30 times that of carbon dioxide over a 100-year horizon (IPCC, 2021). Anaerobic digestion (AD) offers an alternative management pathway that recovers energy and produces nutrient-rich digestate, but AD performance varies by as much as five-fold across food waste streams (130–630 m3 CH4 per Mg VS added), and existing predictive tools either treat food waste as a …
