Michigan Tech Publications

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of global mortality, driving the need for non-invasive early detection methods. Analysis of specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath, such as acetone, hexane, hexanal, isoprene, and pentane, offers a promising diagnostic pathway. However, the selective detection of these low-concentration VOC biomarkers remains a significant challenge. This study employs a combination of theoretical approaches, such as density functional theory (DFT), STM-based tunnelling model aligned with the Tersoff-Hamann approximation, and thermodynamic analysis via the Langmuir adsorption model, to assess the sensing capabilities of two-dimensional (2D) MBenes (Mo2B2Tx) monolayers toward the targeted VOCs. The results …

The Role Of Parents In Shaping The Postsecondary Decisions For Their Students, Jihye Lee, Robert Toutkoushian, Jennifer Stephens Sep 2026

The Role Of Parents In Shaping The Postsecondary Decisions For Their Students, Jihye Lee, Robert Toutkoushian, Jennifer Stephens

Journal of College Access

Most research on college decision-making frames students as the primary decision-makers, often overlooking the role of parents. Using data from the 2009 High School Longitudinal Study (HSLS:09), this study examines how two dimensions of parental involvement, aspirational alignment between students and parents and family decision-making roles, are associated with students’ postsecondary trajectories. Results indicate that parental involvement operates in stage-sensitive ways: partial aspirational alignment is associated with a higher likelihood of college application, whereas enrollment is most strongly associated with shared aspirations and collaborative decision-making. Overall, the findings highlight college choice as a relational and staged process and underscore the …

A Game-Theoretic Approach To Customer Rating Of Hotels On Ota Platforms, George Lymperis, Lambros B. Drossos Sep 2026

A Game-Theoretic Approach To Customer Rating Of Hotels On Ota Platforms, George Lymperis, Lambros B. Drossos

Journal of Global Business Insights

This study develops a game-theoretic model of moral hazard in hotel–guest interactions on Online Travel Agency (OTA) platforms, addressing a question the reputation literature has largely overlooked: can customer reviews discipline hotel behavior even in genuinely one-shot transactions, where a guest and hotel never interact again? Standard repeated-game accounts of reputation rely on a shadow of the future that is absent in tourist-dependent markets dominated by one-time visitors. Drawing on principal–agent theory and community-enforcement models of reputation, we model the hotel–guest interaction as a static moral hazard game in which a neutral OTA verifies and enforces review-based penalties. Hotels choose …

Using cross-sectional survey data from 356 manufacturing and service firms engaged in international activities, partial least squares structural equation modeling was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. The results indicate that …

The Competence Architecture Of Nonprofit Organizations: A Conceptual Model Linking Leadership, Governance, And Human-Capital Systems To Institutional Credibility, Franklin Livingston Sep 2026

The Competence Architecture Of Nonprofit Organizations: A Conceptual Model Linking Leadership, Governance, And Human-Capital Systems To Institutional Credibility, Franklin Livingston

Journal of Global Business Insights

Nonprofit organizations are judged through the competence of visible leaders, yet organizational competence is not reducible to the capabilities of any single executive. Reviews of nonprofit capacity report inconsistent associations between organizational capacity and performance. This conceptual article proposes a theoretical explanation for that inconsistency, one that remains compatible with methodological explanations. It develops a model of nonprofit competence architecture in which competence is an output that organizational systems continuously produce, correct, retain, and make visible, not a stock organizations possess. A theory-synthesis design specifies four mechanisms: Leadership-formation systems generate managerial capability; governance systems detect and partially compensate for capability …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oxide dispersion strengthened alloys are promising structural materials for high temperature, irradiation, and mechanically demanding environments because their performance depends on fine and stable oxide dispersoids distributed within a metallic matrix. However, reliable fabrication remains challenging because precursor oxide nanoparticles or oxide forming species must be transformed into stable oxide dispersoids without excessive agglomeration, coarsening, contamination, or loss during processing. This review critically compares powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, and liquid metallurgy routes for ODS alloy fabrication, with emphasis on oxide evolution, microstructure control, mechanical performance, scalability, and industrial maturity. Powder metallurgy remains the most reliable route for producing fine and …
