Protomix: Unified Prototype Learning For Semantic Change Detection In Remote Sensing, Hengzhi Chen, Kun Hu, Patrick Filippi, Wei Xiang, Thomas Francis Bishop, Zhiyong Wang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

As an emerging topic, semantic change detection (SCD) in remote sensing aims to both identify the locations of changes before and after events and determine the land cover (LC) classes of changed regions. While deep learning has demonstrated its great potential for SCD, the following two fundamental challenges remain: large variations among the same LC class as well as close similarity between different LC classes, and the severe underutilization of massive unchanged regions, which dominate remote sensing scenes but lack detailed semantic annotations. To address these issues, we propose a novel prototype learning framework for SCD, namely ProtoMix, by leveraging …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Deploying Machine Learning (ML) applications on resource-constrained mobile devices remains challenging due to limited computational resources and poor platform compatibility. While Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) offers an offloading-based inference paradigm using GPU servers, existing approaches can be divided into non-transparent and transparent methods, with the former necessitating source-code modifications. Non-transparent offloading achieves high performance but requires intrusive code changes, limiting compatibility with diverse applications. Transparent offloading, in contrast, offers wide compatibility but introduces two challenges: performance degradation under MEC's low and fluctuating bandwidth, where per-operator remote procedure calls (RPCs) inflate end-to-end latency and energy consumption; and black-box logic reconstruction, which …

The Ecology Of Hope: Building Rainbows In Education Systems, Jennifer Achari Jan 2026

The Ecology Of Hope: Building Rainbows In Education Systems, Jennifer Achari

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hope is frequently invoked in education, yet rarely theorised. Where it has been theorised, it has been understood in two largely separate ways: as an individual psychological capacity, in the positive-psychology tradition and as a critical-emancipatory stance, in the pedagogy of hope. This article proposes a third: a theory, the ecology of hope, that locates hope not in the individual alone but in the relationship between a person and the systems that surround them. Bringing the cognitive psychology of hope into dialogue with ecological systems theory, the social-ecological account of resilience, and utopian methodology, in which a better society is …

When Does The Peak Countermovement Jump Performance Occur? Mapping Peak-Trial Timing Across Six Clustered Repetitions, Karol Kruczek, Szymon Karpęcki, Tim Gabbett, Jason Lake, Michał Nowak

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Force-plate countermovement jump (CMJ) testing is widely used to assess neuromuscular status, yet monitoring interpretation often relies on best-trial values from abbreviated protocols, potentially biasing conclusions when the session maximum occurs beyond the sampled attempts. We mapped peak-trial timing across a six-trial clustered (3 + 3) CMJ protocol for seven outcome and strategy force–time metrics, and tested whether this peak-trial pattern was preserved between personal best (PB) and typical state (TS) monitoring sessions, both defined using modified reactive strength index (mRSI) as the primary selection variable. Retrospective dual-force-plate data (1000 Hz; August 2020–December 2025) were analysed from 314 athletes who …

When The Panic Sets In: Ai-Proofing As Pedagogical Violence In Social Work Education, Norah Hosken, Susan Bailey Jan 2026

When The Panic Sets In: Ai-Proofing As Pedagogical Violence In Social Work Education, Norah Hosken, Susan Bailey

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Universities’ rushed responses to generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) constitute pedagogical violence against students and educators in social work programs. Drawing on Matusov and Sullivan’s pedagogical violence framework and Bourdieu’s symbolic violence, we examine how institutional mandates to ‘AI-proof’ assessments contradict core social work values while inflicting systematic harm. AI-proofing policies impose time-limited assessments disadvantaging disabled students and those with caring responsibilities, deploy surveillance technologies that discriminate against non-native English speakers, demand unsustainable workload increases from burned-out educators, and dismantle scaffolded pedagogy aligned with how social workers learn to practise. Using collaborative autoethnography, we document our experiences across Australian universities and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Vaccination elicits systemic immune responses that extend beyond antibody and lymphocyte activation, engaging coordinated metabolic and lipid pathways that modulate immune function. Nevertheless, how systemic molecular responses differ across COVID-19 vaccine platforms, including closely related mRNA platforms, remains poorly understood. Here, we performed integrated plasma proteomic, lipidomic, and metabolomic profiling of 53 SARS-CoV-2–naïve adults vaccinated with Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines. Samples were analysed across multiple timepoints using differential analysis and DIABLO-based multi-omics integration. Our findings reveal distinct platform-associated multi-omic molecular signatures not captured by unsupervised analyses alone. Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination was associated with widespread increases in immunoglobulin and complement …

Regional Arts Network 2019–2025. Case Study 1: Outcome: Strong Inter-Regional Connection, Vahri G. Mckenzie, Jo Pickup

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

A striking achievement of the RAN over its first five-year period is the large number of inter-regional relationships and statewide collaborations that formed between Hub organisations, which have been established or strengthened because of RAWA’s focus on fostering connections and trust. One of the most challenging features of WA’s regional arts sector is its wide geographical spread, which places many WA regional arts organisations at great physical distance from one another. Part of the RAN’s mission in its first five years sought to provide these organisations with readier access to a robust peer network through which they could “stand stronger …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In its first five years, the RAN has proven effective in bolstering the arts leadership skills of many Hub organisation staff working in leadership and coordination roles. In particular, the RAN Advocacy and Leadership Group, established and led by RAWA, has allowed “a strong fellowship of colleagues” to emerge, where previously no such solid and united network for regional arts leaders existed. Many RAN organisations mentioned RAWA’s Network Coordinator as a key element to the success of the RAN, with the role facilitating increased communications between organisation Hub Coordinators as well as executives across WA. RAWA invested in and established …

Regional Arts Network 2019-2025. Case Study 3: Outcome: Trust Built For Regional Community Benefit, Vahri G. Mckenzie, Jo Pickup

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The RAN’s first five years has stimulated increased arts and cultural activity for WA regional artists, communities and audiences. Many of these activities can be directly attributed to the RAN initiative and the reputational value and connections RAWA has generated for its members. In essence, the RAN has proven to be an extremely effective leveraging mechanism, and numerous RAN organisations described how RAN incentives encouraged them to strengthen their ties with local stakeholders, leading to the delivery of important new arts activities in their communities. As observed by Margaret River community environmental educator and volunteer organiser of community events Tracey …

A Delicate Balance: Experiences And Wellbeing Of Pre-Service Teachers Navigating Demands And Benefits Of Studying While Working As A Teacher, Caroline F. Mansfield, Jane Kirkham, Narelle Lemon, Lisa Papatraianou

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In the face of a global teacher shortage various strategies are being used to bolster the teaching workforce. In Australia, one such strategy has been to employ pre-service teachers under alternative permission to teach contracts. Given the recency of this phenomenon, there is little empirical evidence about the impact of this strategy on pre-service teachers, specifically how this experience may influence their wellbeing and retention in the profession. Utilising the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) framework, this study explores the benefits and demands of alternative permission to teach arrangements on pre-service teachers, and in particular the impact on their wellbeing and career …
