Rapid Classification And Quality Assessment Of Citrus Essential Oils Via Machine-Learning-Assisted Raman Spectroscopy, Yong Xuan Hong, Jia Wei Tang, Jie Chen, Yun Yun Xie, Zhang Wen Ma, Qing Hua Liu, Liang Wang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Citrus essential oils (EOs) require accurate identification and assessment to ensure authenticity and consistency. However, conventional techniques such as gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS) are time-consuming and expensive, highlighting the need for novel analytical methods. This study proposes an approach for EOs detection using Raman spectroscopy (RS) combined with machine learning (ML) algorithms. Six citrus EOs underwent an evaporation experiment, with Raman spectra collected at five time points and GC-MS was used to analyze compositional changes at the starting and ending points of evaporation as a standard reference. Five ML algorithms were developed to identify differences among EOs …

Clinical liquid biopsy (e.g., blood or urine) specimens, as a minimally invasive source of crucial molecular information, continue to grow in importance for efficacious targeted cancer treatment. Yet, current molecular profiling technologies are still confined to centralized laboratory testing, which escalates testing costs, result turnaround time, and patient anxiety. Crucially, there is also a scarcity of purposeful clinical validation studies to rigorously evaluate emerging liquid biopsy technologies from research settings to facilitate clinical translation. Here, we report liquid biopsy biosensor advancements in achieving rapid, accurate, and decentralized molecular profiling of a clinically accredited prostate cancer (PCa) urinary circulating RNA biomarker …

Sparse Gradient Training For Recommender Systems, Yunke Qu, Liang Qu, Tong Chen, Xiangyu Zhao, Jianxin Li, Hongzhi Yin
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Recommender systems are widely applied in numerous online platforms such as shopping and social media platforms. They typically utilize large embedding tables that map users and items to dense vectors of uniform sizes. As the number of users and items continues to grow, this design leads to significant memory consumption and computational inefficiencies. This challenge is particularly pronounced in scenarios such as federated learning, where model parameters are updated locally on edge devices with limited computational resources before being transmitted to a central server for aggregation. Numerous approaches have been proposed to address this issue, among which embedding pruning methods …

Translation And Transformation Of Class Through Migration: Rethinking Social And Spatial Mobility Across Contexts, Jamie Coates, Catriona Turnbull, Maja Cederberg
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This issue of Current Sociology Monographs explores new conceptual opportunities at the intersection of migration studies and the sociology of class. The contributions examine migration as a distinct site where class is translated and transformed, using rich, empirically specific cases to show how social class is experienced and produced relationally, transnationally and temporally through the lives of migrants. Through this focus, the papers conceptualise class as a mobile process that travels with migrants, links different contexts and is translated through movement. Distinct from paradigms that tend to universalise a particular narrative or definition of class, this issue adopts a comparative …

A Social And Cognitive Psychological Perspective On The Assumptions Underlying The Rorschach Inkblot Test, Igor Areh, Fanny Verkampt, Alfred Allan, Christian N.L. Olivers
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Introduction/literature findings: The century-old Rorschach test is as controversial as it is well-known, and the subject of an ongoing, but still inconclusive debate about its validity and reliability. This debate is not inconsequential, as the test is still frequently used in clinical and forensic work. In addition to the psychometric aspects, there are social and cognitive psychological assumptions that underlie the test and that have hitherto been underexposed. We identify some of these assumptions and examine them with reference to contemporary social and cognitive psychological research. Discussion: Despite empirical evidence for some of the assumptions underlying the Rorschach test, most …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Children with cerebral palsy (CP) are at increased risk of impaired somatosensation and cognition. Among children with hemiplegia, approximately three-quarters have impaired somatosensation and one-third have intellectual impairment. While somatosensation may relate to cognitive functioning in CP, this relationship has not previously been investigated. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between somatosensation and cognition in children with hemiplegic CP, and whether the pattern of brain injury, classified using an established MRI classification system, moderates this relationship. Forty-seven children (26 females) with hemiplegic CP participated (mean age = 11.0 years; SD = 3.6; range: 6–16 years). Parent questionnaires provided demographic, educational, …

Considerable operational and financial costs are associated with musculoskeletal injury (MSKI) across military organisations. Following an MSKI, reaching ‘medically fully deployable’ status is often contingent on meeting physical employment standards. Strength training has a critical role to play in military physical preparation, injury mitigation and guiding rehabilitation practice. Low levels of muscle strength are associated with increased MSKI risk, and previous MSKI is a leading risk factor for re-injury. When an MSKI does occur, it is essential that all attempts to mitigate the risk of secondary MSKI are met. Maximal force (muscle strength) and rapid force (rate of force development …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a cofactor for NAD+-dependent enzymes that regulate DNA repair, cellular metabolism, and immune function. Supplementation with NAD+ and its precursors is commonly used to prevent age-related disease and extend healthspan. Commercial clinical and wellness settings increasingly provide intravenous (IV) NAD+ and nicotinamide riboside (NR) despite limited evaluation of safety and effectiveness. These considerations are important, as NAD+ and its precursors differ in reported side effects, cellular uptake, and metabolism. This study sought to compare commercially administered NAD+ IV and NR IV in humans by evaluating infusion …
Leading Against The Odds: School Leadership In Under-Resourced Community Schools In Nepal, Shankar Dhakal, Chet Nath Panta
Leading Against The Odds: School Leadership In Under-Resourced Community Schools In Nepal, Shankar Dhakal, Chet Nath Panta
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Community schools in Nepal, particularly in remote areas, face persistent challenges in managing human, financial, and physical resources, which hinder educational quality and equity. Through a multiple case study design guided by Ecological Systems Theory, this research conducted semi-structured interviews with six headteachers from diverse geographical contexts, revealing critical issues including teacher shortages, financial instability, and inadequate infrastructure. Despite these barriers, headteachers demonstrate remarkable resilience through community engagement, strategic resource mobilization, and adaptive leadership strategies that paradoxically become more sophisticated under severe constraints. Positioning Nepal as a critical case for understanding educational leadership in resource-constrained environments globally, the study advances …

Numerically Evaluating The Effect Of Extrusion Angle On Material Flow And Thermal Behaviour During Additive Friction Extrusion Deposition (Afed), Numan Habib, Ferdinando Guzzomi, Ana Vafadar
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Additive Friction Extrusion Deposition (AFED), also known as “SoftTouch”, is an emerging friction-based Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology allowing material to soften before the deposition, increasing the printing speed and reducing cost [1]. However, high power is required during the process, as excessive force is needed to extrude enough material through the printing head. This study investigates how extrusion angle and tool rotational speed affect thermal distribution and material flow in AFED to minimise power consumption. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is proposed, and ANSYS ® Workbench CFD code (Fluent) is used to discretise the CFD model. A User-Defined …

Perceived Realism, Place Attachment, And Residents' Support And Involvement: Towards Resident-Centric Film Tourism Development, Deborah Castro, Sangkyun Kim, S. Mostafa Rasoolimanesh, Songshan Huang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study introduces the concept of perceived realism to (film) tourism studies and examines its effect in combination with place attachment on residents' support for and involvement in film tourism development. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) were applied to a sample of 401 Barcelona residents to explore both symmetrical and asymmetrical relationships among the research constructs. The PLS-SEM revealed that events-focused external realism affects residents' support for film tourism development, while narrative realism affects their involvement in film tourism development. In addition, place attachment directly affects residents' support for and involvement in …
