Evaluation Of Two-Group Iate Coupling With Pbe For Beyond Bubbly Flows In A Large Diameter Pipe, Sungje Hong, Joshua P. Schlegel, Subash L. Sharma
Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study evaluates the two-group interfacial area transport equation (2G IATE) coupled with the S-Gamma (Sγ) population balance equation (PBE) model for beyond bubbly flow regimes in a vertical large-diameter pipe. The 2G IATE framework incorporates intergroup mass transfer mechanisms and is implemented within the Sγ model, which assumes a log-normal bubble size distribution. The numerical approach is validated against experimental data from Schlegel et al. (2012), with a focus on the void fraction and interfacial area concentration (IAC) distributions. The results show that 2G IATE improves the predictions of the void fraction and IAC, although its accuracy varies with …

Impact Of Bubble-Induced Turbulence On Two-Phase Flow Dynamics At High Void Fraction In A Large Diameter Channel, Sungje Hong, Joshua P. Schlegel, Subash L. Sharma
Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study represents the first investigation into the influence of bubble-induced turbulence (BIT) on interfacial area transport mechanisms in gas–liquid two-phase flows under conditions of high void fraction and high velocity in a large diameter channel. Given the unique characteristics of bubble flow in larger channels, the turbulent effects induced by bubbles differ from those observed in smaller channels. However, limited research exists regarding the impact of BIT beyond bubbly flows in large-diameter channels. To address this gap, two approaches for implementing the BIT model are explored: a direct method and an indirect method. This paper assesses both the general …
Comparing Three Different Pot Volumes Simulating Drought Stress In Wheat At Field- Equivalent Density, Tanzeela Akhtar
Comparing Three Different Pot Volumes Simulating Drought Stress In Wheat At Field- Equivalent Density, Tanzeela Akhtar
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Climate variability is increasing the frequency and intensity of drought events, posing a major challenge for wheat production worldwide. Controlled-environment studies are widely used to study drought responses and identify drought-adaptive traits; however, limited rooting volume may limit the ability to replicate open-ground conditions and impede the transferability of experimental findings. This study evaluated the suitability of three pot depths, 25, 35, and 50 cm, corresponding to 5,7 and 10L pot volume for simulating open ground responses of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) in well-watered, gradual drought, and terminal drought conditions. Growth, physiological, and yield traits were compared in pot grown …

Large-Scale Coastal Dynamics: New Incites From Lidar And Satellite Remote Sensing, Aikaterini Konstantinou
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
This thesis leverages remote sensing methods to advance understanding of shoreline morphodynamics from storm to decadal timescales, focusing on three interrelated objectives. First, regional patterns and timescales of beach recovery following the extreme 2013/14 winter were quantified using bi-annual LiDAR and RTK-GNSS surveys of 23 south-west England sites. Recovery trajectories exhibited consistent patterns aligned with pre-existing storm response classifications, demonstrating that both storm response and post-storm recovery can be classified into four groups governed by intrinsic geomorphological and hydrodynamic controls. Almost 90% of sites had recovered at least 75% of lost sediment within three years, while some fully exposed beaches …
Application Of Coastal Change Management Areas (Ccmas) For Coastal Adaptation To Climate Change Impacts In Sw England, Josie-Alice Kirby
Application Of Coastal Change Management Areas (Ccmas) For Coastal Adaptation To Climate Change Impacts In Sw England, Josie-Alice Kirby
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Coastal Change Management Areas (CCMAs) were introduced into the English planning system in 2012 to enable anticipatory management of long-term coastal change. However, their implementation has been limited and inconsistent, reflecting uncertainty in how future shoreline change should be defined and translated into statutory planning boundaries. This thesis addresses the gap between national coastal adaptation policy and the scientific evidence required to support its practical application. The research combines policy analysis, geomorphological classification and probabilistic modelling to develop a structured framework for delineating areas of future coastal change. Chapter 2 evaluates the national implementation of CCMAs and demonstrates substantial variability in …
Coping With Climate Change: The Role Of Plasticity Within And Across Generations, Caitlin Mcandry
Coping With Climate Change: The Role Of Plasticity Within And Across Generations, Caitlin Mcandry
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Climate change is leading to increased mean temperatures and more frequent and severe temperature anomalies, threatening organisms globally. Phenotypic plasticity, the ability of a given genotype to express different phenotypes in different environments, may offer a mechanism that allows organisms to temporarily persist in a rapidly changing environment, ultimately buying time for genetically based adaptations to evolve. Plasticity has been demonstrated both within and across generations, in response to different environmental stressors. However, our understanding of the interactive effects of plastic responses across levels of biological organisation, and over temporal scales from hours to generations, is still limited. Additionally, we …
Impacts Of Microplastics In A Changing Agri-Environment, Riley Kent
Impacts Of Microplastics In A Changing Agri-Environment, Riley Kent
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Microplastics are increasingly recognized as persistent contaminants in terrestrial ecosystems, yet their impacts on plant performance remain poorly understood under realistic environmental conditions. In natural and agricultural systems, plants rarely encounter contaminants in isolation, instead experiencing multiple interacting stressors. The work presented in this thesis investigated how soil microplastics influence plant growth and physiology both independently and in combination with freshwater flooding, a climate-relevant stressor associated with increased storm activity and shifts in precipitation patterns. Using white clover (Trifolium repens) as a model agronomic legume across multiple cultivars, the study examined how polymer identity, plant genotype, and environmental context interact …

Taking Snaps Of Plant Life Conditions: Designing A New Crop Autonomous Micro-Environmental Recording Array, Sohail Saeed
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Accurate measurement of plant microclimate is essential for understanding how local environmental conditions influence plant growth and response. In many experimental setups, environmental monitoring is performed using a single measurement point, which may fail to capture spatial variability across a plant array. This thesis presents the design, validation, and deployment of a compact distributed sensing system, referred to as C.A.M.E.R.A. (Crop Autonomous Micro-Environment Recording Array), developed to measure plant microclimate conditions at multiple locations simultaneously. The system integrates air temperature and relative humidity sensing using the SHT85, multi-point soil temperature measurement using DS18B20 probes, and relative light monitoring using the SEN0390 …

Hard-Wired For Success? Unravelling Genomic Signatures In Pollinators, Saam Hasan
Hard-Wired For Success? Unravelling Genomic Signatures In Pollinators, Saam Hasan
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Global decline among bumblebees shows strong evidence of phylogenetic structure, with the subgenus Pyrobombus over-represented among stable/range-expanding species. Based on this striking pattern, a hypothesis was drawn up suggesting that Pyrobombus species have acquired advantageous traits that enhance their survivability and dispersal compared to other subgenera. This hypothesis explores the possibility that these advantageous traits were acquired via the evolutionary process and are detectable as genomic signatures unique to the subgenus when compared with other subgenera.Twenty-four bumblebee species, representing all 15 subgenera and including 6 Pyrobombus species, were compared. The first study investigated genomic inversions and duplications. Pyrobombus was characterized …
Intertidal Seagrass Meadows In South West England: The Ecology Of Expansion, Oliver Thomas
Intertidal Seagrass Meadows In South West England: The Ecology Of Expansion, Oliver Thomas
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Within the space of a decade, intertidal sediments in the Tamar estuary, South West England, have undergone a shift from unvegetated mudflats to dense perennial seagrass habitat. Yet despite the increasing prevalence of intertidal seagrass meadows in the South West, there are large knowledge gaps relating to intertidal meadow biodiversity, function and ecosystem service provision, particularly within the context of the estuarine meadows of the South West: as such we do not fully understand the implications of this recent colonisation within the Tamar. This study aims to characterise the spatial expansion of these newly-established Zostera marina meadows using Earth observation …
Investigating The Determinants Of Fight Dynamics In The Minotaur Beetle Typhaeus Typhoeus, Amy Bromley
Investigating The Determinants Of Fight Dynamics In The Minotaur Beetle Typhaeus Typhoeus, Amy Bromley
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
It is widely accepted that the main determinants of contest outcome are resource value, residency status, and resource holding potential, with each of these playing an important role in determining contest behaviour. Examples of resource holding potential are morphological traits such as body size and weaponry. Animals that possess weaponry can exhibit different morphotypes, such as size difference in horns, which can lead to differences in contest behaviour, with larger morphotypes engaging in head-to-head combat, while smaller morphotypes can avoid combat altogether. One such species that possess weapons in the form of horns and engages in physical combat, is the …
Assessing The Ecological Vulnerability Of Natural Flood Defences And Risks To Agricultural Land Following Seawater Flooding, Cally Barratt
Assessing The Ecological Vulnerability Of Natural Flood Defences And Risks To Agricultural Land Following Seawater Flooding, Cally Barratt
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Anthropogenic climate change is intensifying extreme weather events, affecting the natural environment by altering ecosystems, and leading to habitat loss. Pressingly, the frequency and severity of storm surge flooding in low-lying coastal regions is projected to increase under future climate scenarios. There is a growing need to understand how these events will impact coastal ecosystems, and the measures that can be taken to mitigate against these effects and protect natural resources. Furthermore, with increased pressures placed on agriculture to meet food demand, protecting arable land resources in coastal regions from the rising threat of flooding is imperative. This thesis explores …
Physiological And Morphological Responses To Drought Stress In Different Cultivation Environments In Wild Type And Aba-Deficient Barley, Chloe Betts
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Global food security is increasingly threatened by the effects of climate change. Of the environmental factors affected by climate change, drought is one of the most critical for plant survival and reproduction, shaping plant morphology and physiology and therefore crop productivity. Although the effects of drought on plants are widely studied, studies are often conducted in controlled greenhouse or laboratory conditions rather than more realistic field-like conditions. This is justified by the lower costs, convenience, and ability to disentangle the effects of different factors in more controlled conditions. This thesis explores the effect of the same watering limitations in different …
Plastic Pollution: Investigating Environmental Pathways And Critically Evaluating Interventions, Florence Parker-Jurd
Plastic Pollution: Investigating Environmental Pathways And Critically Evaluating Interventions, Florence Parker-Jurd
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Plastics are lightweight, versatile, and durable materials used in the manufacture of a wide range of products. Innovation in the early 1950’s facilitated a dramatic reduction in production costs with the potential to mass produce inexpensive convenience items intended for single use applications. As a consequence, plastic production has grown exponentially over the last 75 years, and a throw away culture of single use has become deeply engrained in modern society. Plastic production exceeds 450 million tonne/yr, substantially exceeding our capacity to manage associated waste resulting in pollution accumulating in every compartment of the natural environment. While plastic pollution has …
Coral Reef Fishes In Different Hard And Soft Coral-Dominated Reef Habitats, Ana Coelho
Coral Reef Fishes In Different Hard And Soft Coral-Dominated Reef Habitats, Ana Coelho
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Understanding how fish communities respond to different coral habitats is essential for predicting the future resilience of coral reef ecosystems. This study tested whether fish assemblages differ between hard and soft coral–dominated reef plots and among coral genera. We predicted higher fish abundance and more frequent benthic interactions in hard coral plots, and genus-specific differences in community composition, behaviour, and time spent within plots. This study examined fish species diversity, richness, abundance, behaviour, and the time spent in coral habitats. The analysis encompassed seven coral genera in an Indo-Pacific reef system. Twenty 2 × 2 m reef areas, each dominated …
Effects Of Salinity, Region, Site, And Cohort On Growth Traits Of The Black Mangrove, Avicennia Germinans, Bekki Foster
Effects Of Salinity, Region, Site, And Cohort On Growth Traits Of The Black Mangrove, Avicennia Germinans, Bekki Foster
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Mangroves are trees that are adapted to grow in saline or brackish environments, typically, in estuarine and coastal zones in tropical and subtropical areas. Their root complexity supports marine biodiversity by providing habitat and nursery grounds for fishes and their canopies serve as roosting and breeding sites for avian species. Additionally, roots facilitate nutrient capture through epibiont communities and trap suspended sediments, enhancing stability against high-energy weather and contributing to vertical accretion, potentially mitigating sea level rise. This study aimed to investigate how such factors as salinity, provenance, and genetic background, affect the above and below ground morphological traits of …
Influence Of Ecological Transitions On The Evolution Of Circadian And Light Detection Genes In Squamates, Isobel Sleep
Influence Of Ecological Transitions On The Evolution Of Circadian And Light Detection Genes In Squamates, Isobel Sleep
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Circadian rhythms are self-sustaining, endogenous processes that align behaviour and physiology with daily environmental cycles. Rhythms are regulated by conserved genes forming transcriptional feedback loops and are entrained by environmental cues (e.g., light). Circadian systems are well studied in model organisms, their molecular evolution in squamates (lizards and snakes) remains less understood. Squamates represent the most species-rich reptile group with extensive ecological and sensory diversity, exhibiting multiple independent transitions across ecological niches, including repeated shifts into low-light environments (e.g., nocturnality, fossoriality), making them ideal for examining circadian and light-associated gene evolution. This study investigates how ecological transitions have influenced the …

Use Of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation As An Assessment Of Corticospinal Excitability In Individuals With Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness, Elizabeth Cornforth
Theses and Dissertations
Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a common, disabling, chronic vestibular disorder whereby individuals experience symptoms of non-vertiginous dizziness, unsteadiness, and sway or rocking that are present most hours of the day, most days of the week. Individuals with PPPD have been noted to have an increased burden of dizziness and reduced quality of life compared to other dizziness diagnoses. The cause of PPPD is not well understood which can lead to years of diagnostic testing, failed therapies, and poor symptom management. It is important to understand PPPD pathophysiology so that optimal treatment interventions can be developed for this disorder to …

To mitigate limitations in self-reported mood assessments, we introduce a novel affective bias task (ABT). The task quantifies instantaneous emotional state by leveraging the phenomenon of affective bias, in which people interpret external emotional stimuli in a manner consistent with their current emotional state. This study establishes task stability in measuring and tracking depressive symptoms in clinical and non-clinical populations. Initial assessment in a large non-clinical sample established normative ratings. Depressive symptoms were tracked relative to task performance in a non-clinical sample, as well as in a clinical cohort undergoing surgical evaluation for severe epilepsy. In both cohorts, a stronger …

Microwave ablation is an effective treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma, but tumors adjacent to extrahepatic organs carry a higher risk for thermal injury. Thermoprotective techniques such as hydrodissection and gallbladder decompression can reduce this risk and expand the range of lesions amenable to percutaneous treatment. We present a case of a 68-year-old woman with hepatocellular carcinoma in hepatic segment V, with partial treatment response from prior transarterial chemoembolization. Due to the lesion's proximity to the gallbladder and transverse colon, microwave ablation was performed with concurrent ultrasound- and CT-guided gallbladder decompression and hydrodissection. The ablation was technically successful without post-procedural complications. At …
Autonomous Navigation Development And On-Ground Validation For Satellite Rendezvous And Proximity Operations, Logan Banker
Autonomous Navigation Development And On-Ground Validation For Satellite Rendezvous And Proximity Operations, Logan Banker
Masters Theses
Spacecraft rendezvous and docking are critical mission phases for various applications of spaceflight, including active debris removal (ADR) and in-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing (ISAM). While previous missions utilized humans to perform rendezvous and docking, this style of mission greatly increases safety risks and cannot be implemented on a large scale. Autonomous servicing satellites provide a path towards scalable rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) because these autonomous agents do not require human intervention. This work presents a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) for the navigation system of an agent which analyzes monocular images and predicts the target's position and orientation …
Wattage- And Composition-Dependent Ocular Surface Toxicity: An In Vitro Study On E-Cigarette Aerosol Exposure In Human Corneal Epithelial Cells, Tzu-Ling Lin
Masters Theses
As electronic cigarette consumption continues to escalate globally, its impact on non-respiratory mucosal surfaces, particularly the ocular surface, remains largely understudied. This study investigated the toxicological effects of e-cigarette aerosols using a human corneal epithelial cell (HCE-2) model. Our findings reveal that aerosol exposure induces a significant, dose-dependent reduction in cell viability, exacerbated by higher device wattage and specific flavor agents such as watermelon. Exposure was found to trigger intracellular oxidative stress and the activation of apoptotic pathways, leading to programmed cell death. Furthermore, the upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines suggests that vaping may predispose users to chronic inflammatory conditions of …
Developing Discharge Estimation Algorithm Using Low-Cost Velocity Sensor And Machine Learning, Barkha Gautam
Developing Discharge Estimation Algorithm Using Low-Cost Velocity Sensor And Machine Learning, Barkha Gautam
Masters Theses
Accurate river discharge estimation is essential for flood forecasting, water resources management, and hydraulic decision-making; however, continuous discharge records are unavailable at many river locations. Traditional stage-discharge rating curves are widely used but their reliability may decrease when channel conditions change or flow conditions vary rapidly. This study develops and evaluates Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models for discharge prediction using 15-minute time-series data from river monitoring stations in Missouri. Two model configurations, a baseline stage-only model and an enhanced stage-plus-velocity model, are developed and evaluated independently at two river sites to determine whether the inclusion of surface velocity improves discharge …
Examination Of Laser Microwelding As A Technique For The Repair Of Steel Castings, Allan John Woldow
Examination Of Laser Microwelding As A Technique For The Repair Of Steel Castings, Allan John Woldow
Masters Theses
"Metal castings have long been plagued with minor defects caused by various process and design conditions. Commonly, minor defects are not seen until after machining operations have been completed, and by the time they are identified, they cannot be salvaged in a manner that is structurally sound and does not have other detrimental effects on the product. Detrimental effects may include warping from high heat input in traditional welding, warping from reheat treatment, oxidation of machined surfaces, microstructural anomalies, and reduced mechanical properties. Micro laser welding has the potential to provide a solution to these issues by providing a low …

Aura-Visionpose: Creating Datasets For Vision-Based Pose Estimation, Mohanad Alameer
Masters Theses
"Spacecraft rendezvous is an integral part of many orbital missions, including active space debris removal (ADR) and in-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing (ISAM). Traditionally, rendezvous missions rely mainly on manual ground-based control to perform rendezvous and docking. While this can be effective on an individual basis, it becomes less practical at scale. Autonomous vision-based methods can reduce reliance on human control, and may improve scalability, response time, and reduce the possibility of human error for both ADR and ISAM. This work lays the necessary groundwork for developing a machine learning (ML) model for autonomous rendezvous by creating a labeled image …
