Near-Field Scan Method For Radiated Susceptibility Analysis And The Design And Optimization Of A Miniaturized Spiral Antenna For Ultra-Wideband Applications, Mckennan Edward Starkey

Masters Theses

"The work presented in this thesis consists of two separate topics. The first topic is a new method for the characterization of radiated susceptibility of electronic devices, while the second topic is on antenna design. The first topic proposes an approach to experimentally determine locations within an electronic system that are well coupled to external far-field radiators. This method is performed by using a differential magnetic field probe to sweep across the target device while measuring the total radiated power (TRP) produced by the device in a mode stirred tent. Scan locations where the TRP is larger than the background …

Optical Fiber Eaf Refactory Lining Temperature Monitoring For Safety And Operating Efficiency, Manoj Kumar Pullagura Jan 2026

Optical Fiber Eaf Refactory Lining Temperature Monitoring For Safety And Operating Efficiency, Manoj Kumar Pullagura

Masters Theses

"Electric arc furnace (EAF) sidewalls experience severe thermal, chemical, and mechanical loading, especially near burner and injector regions where refractory wear and water ingress from damaged cooling components pose safety risks. Conventional thermocouples and resistance temperature detectors provide reliable point measurements but lack the spatial resolution needed to capture steep gradients and localized anomalies. This research investigates embedded optical fiber sensors for high-resolution temperature monitoring of EAF refractory safety linings to support early water-leak detection and assessment of refractory thermal behavior. A combined Rayleigh backscattering-based optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) approach was evaluated through laboratory …

The Occurence Of Expansive Clay Soils In Illinois And Their Effects On Shallow Lightly Loaded Foundations, Greg James Gollaher Jan 2026

The Occurence Of Expansive Clay Soils In Illinois And Their Effects On Shallow Lightly Loaded Foundations, Greg James Gollaher

Masters Theses

"The damage caused to shallow foundations and slabs on grade by the shrink-swell activity of clay soils is well documented across the United States. There are local and national resources available that delineate areas that are problematic and areas that are not. These resources paint Illinois as an undemanding foundation environment. However, our experience differs from this. Our experience tells us that damage related to the shrink-swell activity of clay soils is widespread, and commonly severe causing not only cosmetic damage to structures and hard improvements but also affecting the serviceability and longevity of structures. My goal is to accurately …

General Approach To Determining The Embodied Energy Of Refractory Products, Jacob A. Kerr Jan 2026

The Influence Of Scale In Modeling Social Vulnerability And Disaster Assistance, Sina Razzaghi Asl, Oronde Drakes, Eric Tate, Samuel Brody, Wesley Highfield, Kayode Atoba

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Understanding how social vulnerability relates to disaster impacts is critical for addressing social equity, yet the role of spatial scale in this relationship is often overlooked. Most studies use aggregated data, risking ecological fallacy-misinterpreting individual outcomes from group-level data. This study examines how spatial scale influences the relationship between social vulnerability and federal disaster assistance after Hurricane Harvey. Using spatial econometric models at both household and census tract levels, we assessed the strength of key vulnerability indicators in explaining disaster assistance. Results show that disability, housing tenure, household size, and income predict assistance at the household level, but their influence …

Beyond Discrete Indicators: Modeling Intersectional Flood Vulnerability, Sina Razzaghi Asl, Eric Tate, Christopher T. Emrich, Md Asif Rahman, Kaeleb Royster

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Social vulnerability to flooding is shaped by intersectional social marginalization, yet most quantitative assessments employ indicators of single populations. This study applies spatial machine learning to examine how the intersectional social vulnerability indicators of poverty-race, poverty-housing tenure, and race-housing tenure compare with traditional discrete indicators of single populations in predicting flood exposure in California. Using geographically weighted random forests and partial dependence plots, we model spatial heterogeneity and non-linear relationships between social vulnerability and exposure. We quantified flood exposure using a population-adjusted measure derived from building footprints and modeled 500-year fluvial and pluvial flood hazard. The results reveal distinct explanatory …

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

This paper will evaluate how security governance contributes to both the development of democracy and the establishment of stable institutions within newly independent post-colonial states in Africa. Security governance is examined here as it relates to the long-term influence of colonial legacy, military presence, and the politicization of the security services. The authors have based their analysis of this issue on qualitative data gathered from Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya. The findings of the research suggest that unless security sectors are subject to civilian oversight and adhere to democratic principles, they tend to serve the …

Hybrid Threats And Deterrence Effectiveness In Europe, Chick Edmond Jan 2026

Hybrid Threats And Deterrence Effectiveness In Europe, Chick Edmond

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Objectives:
The current European security landscape is characterized by the growing intersection of historical security challenges (i.e., "traditional" security issues) and new forms of hybrid threats. These changes call for a significant re-evaluation of the role of deterrence in today's world. Traditional deterrence approaches have focused on the use of military capability as well as credible retaliatory threats. However, the recent development of hybrid warfare, including cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, economic coercion, and clandestine sabotage has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish between times of war and times of peace. This research argues that existing frameworks for deterring adversaries will increasingly …

The Evolving Beijing Consensus: Chinese Communist Party Political Control And Economic Trade Offs, Ian Murphy Jan 2026

The Evolving Beijing Consensus: Chinese Communist Party Political Control And Economic Trade Offs, Ian Murphy

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

China’s rapid economic rise and unique development trajectory have long been the subject of scholarly debate, often framed through the concept of the “Beijing Consensus” as an alternative to the Washington Consensus. While initial conceptualizations highlight innovation, sustainability, and national sovereignty, later analyses highlighted elements like state capitalism and authoritarianism, particularly in the wake of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. This paper argues that the Beijing Consensus is undergoing a significant evolution under Chairman Xi Jinping, increasingly prioritizing the Chinese Communist Party’s political security, regime stability, and ideological control at the expense of economic growth. This marks a notable departure …

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Transnational challenges, such as climate change, global inequality, pandemics, digital governance, and institutional legitimacy crises, are becoming increasingly complex, therefore, the demand for evidence-based decision-making has become an important developing normative and practical issue in the area of global governance. The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the principal organ of the UN responsible for coordinating policy processes across all areas of economic, social and development issues. However, despite ECOSOC’s ability to make decisions concerning how the world addresses these problems, it has been widely criticized for being unable to translate expert knowledge into tangible policy outcomes. Therefore, this paper …

Revisiting Dependency In The Twenty-First Century: A Critical Analysis Of Africa-China Relations, Chick Edmond Jan 2026

Revisiting Dependency In The Twenty-First Century: A Critical Analysis Of Africa-China Relations, Chick Edmond

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

This research assesses the characteristics of today’s Africa–China relations using dependency theory, world systems theory, neocolonialism, and South-South cooperation, using comparisons between historical African dependence on European colonial powers and recent reliance on China in terms of trade, infrastructure, debt, and technology. This research identifies how contemporary cooperations either continue previous patterns of economic and political subordination or create a transformation of those relationships or provide a challenge to them. Using qualitative comparative historical analysis, along with specific case studies and secondary sources (academic journals, speeches, government publications, etc.), the research demonstrates that while Africa-China relations exhibit fewer structural features …

Autonomous Weapons And Strategic Stability, Chick Edmond

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

The increasing number of artificial intelligence (AI) elements within military systems has introduced new forms of security dilemmas related to speed, level of secrecy, and transfer of responsibility from humans to machines. This article addresses the question of whether or how AI enabled autonomous weapons can lead to greater levels of strategic instability. Three causal mechanisms were determined by this study to potentially create destabilizing effects due to the introduction of autonomy; the first mechanism is a reduction in time available for decision making. The second mechanism involves the creation of multiple pathways of escalation. The third mechanism is the …

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has transformed dramatically since the end of the Cold War. As a collective defense alliance, it was primarily focused on defending itself against the Soviet Union. NATO is now focused on addressing multiple types of threats: traditional, hybrid, and non-traditional. This study uses a qualitative methodological approach that includes a systematic content review of NATO’s Strategic Concepts from to 1991–2022; NATO Summit Communiques; NATO Defense Planning Guidance and Elite Speeches. This allows us to analyse the causes and effects of NATO’s transformation over time. Our results suggest that because of Russia’s actions as a …

Global Evidence On Scaling Nature-Based Solutions For Compound Hazards, Sina Razzaghi Asl, Anahita Azadgar Jan 2026

Global Evidence On Scaling Nature-Based Solutions For Compound Hazards, Sina Razzaghi Asl, Anahita Azadgar

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are increasingly promoted for climate adaptation to compound hazards, but systematic evidence of their effectiveness is still scarce. We address this gap with a systematic review of 38 studies. Each study was sorted by what its measurement design can support, not by what its authors claim. This produced four groups. Direct studies attribute a measured hazard reduction to the intervention, proxy studies infer protection from ecosystem condition, prioritization studies map suitable locations without estimating performance, and qualitative studies describe effectiveness without measuring it. We detect trends in geographic distribution, hazard combinations, intervention types, methodological approaches, and strength …

Strategic Mineral Competition And Democratic Governance In Africa, Chick Edmund Jan 2026

Strategic Mineral Competition And Democratic Governance In Africa, Chick Edmund

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

African countries have become focal points of a new round of competition among global powers to access key minerals required for an emerging green transition, as well as for advanced digital infrastructure and modern weaponry. In addition to their relatively high level of reserves of such minerals, which include cobalt, lithium, graphite and several types of rare earths, Africa is also home to many of the world’s most important deposits. These mineral riches present, however, a contradictory situation: on one hand, they represent the critical resources needed to achieve a low-carbon future; but on the other hand, these same resources …

The Contested Kinmen Model, Ian Murphy Jan 2026

The Contested Kinmen Model, Ian Murphy

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

[Introduction] Kinmen County, Taiwan, stands as an anomaly in East Asia- it is an archipelago administered by Taipei but visually and geographically tethered to the coastline of the People's Republic of China (PRC). For over seven decades, these islands have served as the physical frontline of the unfinished Chinese Civil War, functioning first as a kinetic battleground and later as a laboratory for cross-strait engagement. Yet, to view Kinmen as a relic of the Cold War is to miss it's contemporary strategic significance. The region has now become the primary theater for the PRC's "Kinmen Model" (Jinmen Moshi, symbols redacted), …

This thesis examines how Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) are interpreted and utilized in the context of Brownfield redevelopment, with particular attention to the relationship between historical context, contamination, health risk, and future redevelopment possibilities. While ESAs are widely used to inform redevelopment decisions, there remains a gap in understanding how reported environmental data translates into meaningful assessments. To address this, this study analyzes historical and environmental data from six Brownfield sites, identifying documented contaminants, their associated carcinogenic group, and redevelopment potential. Central to this research is the development of a relational framework designed to function as a more approachable interpretive …

Echoes Of The Nation: Janáček, Bartók, And The Articulation Of Central European Identity In Opera, Elyse Morris Jan 2026

Echoes Of The Nation: Janáček, Bartók, And The Articulation Of Central European Identity In Opera, Elyse Morris

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis examines how opera functioned as a medium for articulating and negotiating national identity in the final decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Focusing on Leoš Janáček’s Jenůfa (1904) and Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle (1911), it explores how composers employed dramatic structure, linguistic choice, and musical language to construct culturally specific forms of expression within a rapidly shifting political and social landscape. Drawing on approaches from musicology and cultural history, the study considers how operatic works not only reflect national identity but actively participate in its formation.

Through analysis of libretto, language, and musical style, this thesis demonstrates that both …

When Does Sexual Image Exposure Constitute Child Sexual Abuse?: Definitional Inconsistencies, Paige B. Kenny

Honors Theses and Capstones

The following review examines how youth exposure to sexual images online is conceptualized and measured as abusive within epidemiological research on online child sexual abuse (OCSA). As digital environments reshape sexual socialization, scholars debate whether and when exposure to sexual content constitutes abuse. To address this issue, this study conducts a qualitative content analysis of 27 survey items drawn from 20 empirical studies of youth online experiences. Survey questions about sexual image exposure were coded across four dimensions: volition, personalization, image or text, and explicitness. Findings reveal significant definitional inconsistency. Many studies rely on ambiguous terms such as “sexual” or …
