Platelet Extravasation In The Microvasculature: An Under-Appreciated Role For Platelets, Justin A Courson, Vahid Afshar-Kharghan, Alan R Burns, Rolando E Rumbaut

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

In recent years, evidence has accumulated highlighting the presence and role of platelet extravasation - wherein platelets accumulate in tissue parenchyma - at a variety of sites throughout the body. While platelets are traditionally known for their roles in hemostasis and thrombosis, it is evident that platelets are potent mediators of inflammation across an array of physiological and pathological contexts. While anucleate and small in size, platelets contain a rich diversity of molecules in their granules capable of modulating cell proliferation, tissue repair, and a host of immune responses. There is growing evidence that platelet extravasation out of the vascular …

“What Am I Reading This Draft For?” Using Reading Filters To Enhance Your Peer Feedback, Kaitlin Clinnin, Mellisa Huffman, Benjamin Keating Jan 2026

“What Am I Reading This Draft For?” Using Reading Filters To Enhance Your Peer Feedback, Kaitlin Clinnin, Mellisa Huffman, Benjamin Keating

English Faculty Research

Reading is a key part of the peer feedback process, and yet how to read peer drafts often receives less attention than other stages of this process.1 As a result, students may ask, “What am I reading this draft for?” Within this question are student concerns about the rhetorical and pedagogical purposes of reading peer drafts as well as the students’ own credibility and ability to read peer work compared to other presumably more “expert” sources of feedback. The chapter helps students grasp the social and rhetorical purposes of reading for peer workshops. It then presents a set of reading …

School of Psychology

The idea that merely viewing nature can promote stress recovery has profound societal implications, driving the use of nature imagery in the design of environments where access to real nature is limited. Scientific support for this concept originates from a pioneering study by Ulrich et al. (1991), which demonstrated superior psycho-physiological stress recovery during exposure to nature videos compared to urban videos. Despite its influence, this foundational study has never been systematically replicated. To address this gap, ten research teams across the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Sweden, and the USA collaborated on a multisite replication. A final sample of 959 …

Integrating Neuroscience And Social Psychology In Researching Interprofessional Education: The Inspire Framework, Kimberley Schenke, Pamela Rae, Jaysan Charlesford, Phil Gee

School of Psychology

There is an increasing focus on the importance of interprofessional education as an integral part of health and social care training. However, the fundamental psychological processes underlying successful interprofessional education are not well understood. Here we propose a single framework, Integrating Neuroscience and Social Psychology In Researching Interprofessional Education (INSPIRE), grounded in evidence from social psychology and neuroscience that could be used to generate testable hypotheses to inform the design, development and evaluation of interprofessional education. The application of this framework offers a novel, scientifically grounded approach to improving the learning outcomes of interprofessional education and provides a foundation for …

Navigating Knowledge: Effects Of State Curiosity On Children's Word Learning And Information Seeking [Registered Report]: Effects Of State Curiosity On Children's Word Learning And Information Seeking, Anna Caunt, Shaun Dordoy, Rana Abu-Zhaya, Alastair Smith Jan 2026

Navigating Knowledge: Effects Of State Curiosity On Children's Word Learning And Information Seeking [Registered Report]: Effects Of State Curiosity On Children's Word Learning And Information Seeking, Anna Caunt, Shaun Dordoy, Rana Abu-Zhaya, Alastair Smith

School of Psychology

Early learning takes place within complex, multimodal environments where curiosity plays a critical role in guiding exploratory behaviors and supporting cognitive development. While trait curiosity shapes children’s early learning experiences, state curiosity is context-dependent fostering early learning, in-part, through information seeking behaviors. Here, we explore whether state-induced curiosity can influence exploratory behaviors and facilitate word learningwithin a multimodal search task that mirrors real-world learning environments.Children (2.5- to 4-year-olds) will be introduced to novel objects and labels via a storybook. After exposure to each novel object, participants will locate the target object (i.e., a sticker depicting the novel object), hidden within …

Mapping The Role Of Occupational Therapy Within Primary Care Services: A Scoping Review, Katie-Mai Davies, Alison Warren, Sam Wakley

School of Health Professions

Introduction:Occupational therapy is named a key profession within primary care, with growing demand due to an ageing population and increase of people living with long-term conditions. Despite this, occupational therapy within primary care remains an evolving, under researched area of practice. This scoping review explored the role of occupational therapy within primary care including the populations and interventions currently provided. Methods:The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews was followed with systematic searches conducted across CINAHL, PubMED and AMED databases with grey literature also sourced. The findings are presented in tabular format and analysed using descriptive statistics and frequency counts …

A Feasibility Randomised Controlled Trial Of An Exergaming Device Aimed At Improving Mobility In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Rachel Rapson, Bernie Carter, Harriet Hughes, Jos M. Latour, Wendy Ingram, Jonathan Marsden Jan 2026

A Feasibility Randomised Controlled Trial Of An Exergaming Device Aimed At Improving Mobility In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Rachel Rapson, Bernie Carter, Harriet Hughes, Jos M. Latour, Wendy Ingram, Jonathan Marsden

School of Health Professions

Aim: A novel interactive exergaming device enables children with cerebral palsy (CP) to exercise whilst standing. A small study showed gains in ankle motion after training with the device. This study explores the feasibility of a community-based randomised controlled trial (RCT) using this device to improve mobility in children with CP (Registered ISRCTN80878394). Method: Fifteen children with CP Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I-III were randomised 1:1 to either 10-weeks training with the device or usual care. Two potential primary outcome measures were assessed at 10-weeks with 20-week follow up: motion of the centre-of-mass estimate while stepping (Next …

Right Child In The Right Place: A Mixed-Method Case Study Of Plymouth City Council’S Placement Decision Systems, Leetice Taylor, Sheena Asthana, Oliver Beer, Cath Quinn Jan 2026

Right Child In The Right Place: A Mixed-Method Case Study Of Plymouth City Council’S Placement Decision Systems, Leetice Taylor, Sheena Asthana, Oliver Beer, Cath Quinn

School of Health Professions

This research aims to understand how to reduce the use, and cost of inappropriate placements for Plymouth’s children in care. The number of children in care in England is rising, and local authorities are under pressure to find a suitable home within their local area for children in care, where appropriate. Local authorities are paying unsustainable costs for placements where children are facing potential negative outcomes. This research will synthesise information from academic literature, financial and demographic data, council staff, children in care and carers to understand best practice in placing children in the right place and driving down costs. …

Connecting The Dots - Recognition Of Artificial And Natural Shapes Relies On Representing Points Of High Information, Gunnar Schmidtmann, Nicholas Baker, Kevin J. Lande, Filipp Schmidt Jan 2026

Connecting The Dots - Recognition Of Artificial And Natural Shapes Relies On Representing Points Of High Information, Gunnar Schmidtmann, Nicholas Baker, Kevin J. Lande, Filipp Schmidt

School of Health Professions

Physiological and psychophysical evidence suggests that the visual system represents object outlines using prominent curvature features, particularly regions of extreme curvature (convex maxima and concave minima). These curvature extrema often coincide with points of high informational content (“surprisal”), but this relationship is only correlational. It remains unclear whether the visual system explicitly encodes curvature extrema or instead prioritizes the most informative contour locations. To address this, we conducted two shape-matching experiments comparing the roles of curvature extrema and surprisal in shape representation. Observers performed match-to-sample tasks in which smooth reference shapes were matched to simplified polygonal versions created by connecting …

Self-Guided Functional Imagery Training To Reduce Anxiety, Jackie Andrade, Stephanie Hartgen-Walker, Caroline Morgan, Ayan, Idil Aytekin, Khadijah Sekoni, Kardelen Sengul, Jonathan Rhodes

School of Psychology

Objectives: Many university students experience high anxiety but have limited access to effective interventions. We evaluated a novel digital intervention for anxiety based on functional imagery training (FIT), designed to help individuals identify the impacts of anxiety, set engagement goals, and strengthen motivation for change. Functional Imagery for Keeping Anxiety low (FIKA) uses speak-aloud tasks, journalling, empathic questions, and personalised guided imagery for a person-centred approach. It builds motivation for engagement goals over safety goals through development and practice of vivid and emotionally laden multisensory imagery. Design: Study 1 used semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to explore user experiences of …

Dampened Social Motivation In Dysphoria: The Role Of Negative Social Expectancies And Internal Causal Attribution Style, Julie L Ji, Nilly Mor, Colin Macleod Jan 2026

Dampened Social Motivation In Dysphoria: The Role Of Negative Social Expectancies And Internal Causal Attribution Style, Julie L Ji, Nilly Mor, Colin Macleod

School of Psychology

Dysphoria is associated with dampening of social interaction intention, but the cognitive mechanisms that underpin this relationship are under-investigated. This study tested the hypothesis that heightened negative social expectancies mediate the association between dysphoria and dampened social motivation. Additionally, it tested the hypothesis that the association between dysphoria and negative social expectancies is mediated by an attribution style bias that attributes negative, but not positive, outcomes to internal causes. University students (N = 271) with varied levels of dysphoria read vignettes describing hypothetical situations where they initiate a social interaction that results in positive or negative outcomes. Participants rated their …
