Effects Of A Context-Based Intervention On Sidelining Teacher Bias Toward Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Marisa Kortright Jan 2026

Effects Of A Context-Based Intervention On Sidelining Teacher Bias Toward Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Marisa Kortright

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Students with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often display behaviors such as inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity that may be perceived as disruptive in classroom settings. These behaviors can influence teachers’ responses and disciplinary decisions, which may be shaped by stereotypes or biases associated with ADHD diagnoses. This study examined whether a context-based intervention could reduce bias in teachers’ disciplinary decisions. Participants were 112 current or former elementary school teachers living in the United States who were recruited through the online recruitment platform Cloud Research. Using an experimental design, participants were randomly assigned to a neutral or empathetic intervention condition and evaluated student …

Formalizing Asymmetric Control-Telemetry Separation In Distributed Industrial Control Systems, Andrew Manison Jan 2026

Formalizing Asymmetric Control-Telemetry Separation In Distributed Industrial Control Systems, Andrew Manison

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Distributed industrial control systems often place control and telemetry traffic on the same communication substrate even though the two workloads impose different requirements. Control paths need bounded request-response latency and predictable acknowledgement semantics, whereas telemetry paths benefit from scalable publish-subscribe fanout and tolerance for consumer-side delay. This thesis argues that, for the tested class of mixed workloads on shared commodity infrastructure, these communication roles should be separated architecturally rather than forced through a single protocol. To evaluate that claim, the thesis formalizes an asymmetric control- telemetry pattern and instantiates it in the Asymtra framework using gRPC for synchronous control and …

Infant Sensory Gating And A Developmental Cascade To Autistic Traits And Anxiety, Rebecca F Schwarzlose Jan 2026

Infant Sensory Gating And A Developmental Cascade To Autistic Traits And Anxiety, Rebecca F Schwarzlose

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Disruptions to the infant sensory environment can have lasting effects on neural response properties and behavior in both humans and animals. Recent work has begun to highlight an additional factor in infant sensory experience: differences in inhibitory signaling and sensory gating. Converging work from human and animal studies has begun to implicate a developmental cascade by which impaired sensory gating during a sensitive period of neonatal neurodevelopment promotes a phenotype of sensory over-responsivity, autistic traits, anxiety, and other psychiatric challenges. In this Review, I propose a model for this developmental cascade and highlight how differences in infant sensory responsivity represent …

UNLABELLED: Molecular signatures predict prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma, but their relevance to transarterial radioembolization (TARE) with yttrium-90 (90Y) is unknown. We aimed to identify baseline and treatment-induced pathways associated with response and nominate biomarkers. Ten transcriptomically diverse human liver cancer cell lines were exposed to escalating activities of glass 90Y microspheres for 10 days. Normalized AUC values quantified sensitivity. Whole-transcriptome RNA sequencing at baseline and after treatment was analyzed with elastic net regression and gene set enrichment. Findings were corroborated by qRT-qPCR and exploratory analysis of pretreatment tumor samples from patients undergoing TARE. Liver cancer cell line responses to 90Y …

The Cognitive-Affective Social Processing And Emotion Regulation (Casper) Model, M Catalina Camacho, Elina Deshpande, Michael T Perino Jan 2026

The Cognitive-Affective Social Processing And Emotion Regulation (Casper) Model, M Catalina Camacho, Elina Deshpande, Michael T Perino

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Humans are intensely social creatures. It is therefore not surprising that many psychiatric disorder criteria include social dysfunctions; however, overlapping presentations and diverse, complex etiologies make treating social dysfunctions difficult. Here, we introduce the Cognitive Affective Social Processing and Emotion Regulation (CASPER) model. CASPER integrates research from social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and developmental science to describe how real-world social processing unfolds and is associated with differing psychiatric social cognitive neurophenotypes. Briefly, social processing can be broken down into the following cognitive steps: identifying relevant social cues, attending to related cues, interpreting cues, and adjusting behavior appropriately. Each of these steps …

The antigenic landscape of autoimmune diabetes reflects a failure to preserve self-tolerance, yet how novel neoantigens emerge in humans remains incompletely understood. Here we designed an immunopeptidomics-based approach to probe HLA-II-bound, islet-derived neoepitopes in patients with type 1 diabetes. We uncovered a Cys→Ser transformation, conserved between mice and humans, that reshapes autoreactivity to insulin at the single-residue level. This transformation, which we call C19S, arises from oxidative remodeling of insulin in stressed pancreatic islets and also occurs in cytokine-activated antigen-presenting cells, contributing to a feed-forward loop of neoepitope formation and presentation. Despite involving just one amino acid, C19S is recognized …

Propionibacteriaceae appear to have adapted to life on humans during the domestication of cattle. These microbial immigrants formed the genus Cutibacterium, and a descendent of those microbial trailblazers (C acnes) now dominates 25% of human skin. C acnes colonization of human skin requires the protein RoxP. Although all Cutibacteria encode this adaptation to life on humans, nothing like RoxP has been found in any other organism. In this study, we report an extensive assessment of 21 RoxP orthologs, which identified conserved molecular surfaces linked to heme-dependent oligomerization and low pH stability. Our investigation suggests how RoxP helps C acnes dominate …

Coordinated Regulation Of Capping Protein By Carmil And V-1/Myotrophin, John A Hammer, John A Cooper Jan 2026

Coordinated Regulation Of Capping Protein By Carmil And V-1/Myotrophin, John A Hammer, John A Cooper

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Capping Protein (CP) plays a central role in controlling actin filament dynamics in almost all eukaryotic cell types by virtue of its ability to block monomer addition and loss at the barbed end of the actin filament. Like other proteins that control actin assembly, CP is subject to regulation. Here we focus on two direct regulators of CP-CARMIL and V-1/Myotrophin. Specifically, we review recent biochemical, structural, imaging, and cell biological data that argue these two proteins cooperate to create a regulatory cycle for CP that controls its availability, activity, and site of action in the cell. Finally, we discuss unresolved …

Airway Management In Emergency Department Thoracotomy: A Narrative Review, Aaron J Lacy, Adam Liebendorfer, Sarah M Guess, Rami S Al-Aref, Anthony P Kronfli, Rachel E Armstrong, Amelia W Maiga, Alexander Bracey, Ryan N Barnicle Jan 2026

Airway Management In Emergency Department Thoracotomy: A Narrative Review, Aaron J Lacy, Adam Liebendorfer, Sarah M Guess, Rami S Al-Aref, Anthony P Kronfli, Rachel E Armstrong, Amelia W Maiga, Alexander Bracey, Ryan N Barnicle

2020-Current year OA Pubs

INTRODUCTION: Emergency department thoracotomy (EDT) is a high-risk, life-saving intervention for patients in traumatic cardiac arrest. A critical component of EDT is airway management, typically performed by emergency physicians, yet formal guidance regarding optimal strategies remains limited. Airway management in this setting is uniquely complex due to concurrent anatomic injury, physiologic instability, and the procedural demands of thoracotomy.

DISCUSSION: Endotracheal intubation (ETI) during EDT presents multiple challenges. Anatomic difficulties may arise from facial or cervical trauma, restricted positioning, and the presence of cervical collars. Cognitive load is heightened by the chaotic, multidisciplinary environment, requiring strategies such as pre-briefing, checklists, and …

Identification Of Distinct Subtypes In Immune Tolerance After Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Using The Prospective Able1.0 Pediatric Study Cohort, Bernard Ng, Shalini Shenoy, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The lack of immune tolerance after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) can result in chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD), which is the primary nonrelapse limitation of successful HCT. To date, immune tolerance has been considered a single biological entity, but we hypothesized that post-HCT immune tolerance could develop through multiple pathways. Using the ABLE network database, which comprises measurements of 75 cell populations, 10 cytokines and chemokines, lymphocyte population telomere length, KRECs and TRECs, and 132 metabolites from the largest pediatric cGvHD cohort (n = 241), we applied clustering analysis to patients with primary immune tolerance (PIT; no acute GvHD [aGvHD] or …

Excellent Outcomes In Feasibility Study Of Radiation-Free Conditioning And Transplant In Pediatric Severe Aplastic Anemia, Mithra Lakshmi Narasimhan, Irem Eldem, Jeffrey J Bednarski, Ginny L Schulz, Robert J Hayashi, Shalini Shenoy

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Severe aplastic anemia (SAA) is treated with a hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) in the presence of an HLA-matched sibling donor (MSD) with disease-free survival (DFS) of >90%. In the absence of an MSD, immunosuppressive therapy (IST) can induce remission but concerns for relapsed/refractory disease and clonal hematopoiesis persist. IST failure is an indication for HCT. Modern HCT approaches target barriers such as graft rejection (GR), graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and transplant-related toxicities. Traditionally, total body irradiation (TBI) inclusive HCT conditioning helps decrease GR, but the use of TBI in children increases concerns for late effects such as malignancies. To describe outcomes …

Multiple myeloma (MM) remains incurable despite advances in treatment options. Although tumor subtypes and specific DNA abnormalities are linked to worse prognosis, the impact of immune dysfunction on disease emergence and/or treatment sensitivity remains unclear. We developed an Immune Atlas of MM by generating profiles of 1,397,272 single cells from the bone marrow (BM) of 337 newly diagnosed participants and characterized immune and hematopoietic cell populations. Cytogenetic risk-based analysis revealed heterogeneous associations with T cells of BM, with 17p13 deletion showing distinct enrichment of a type 1 interferon signature. The disease progression-based analysis revealed the presence of a proinflammatory immune …

Apicomplexan parasites, responsible for toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis and malaria, invade host cells through a unique gliding motility mechanism powered by actomyosin motors and a dynamic organelle called the conoid. Here, using cryo-electron microscopy, we determined structures of four essential complexes of the Toxoplasma gondii conoid: the preconoidal P2 ring, tubulin-based conoid fibers, and the subpellicular and intraconoidal microtubules. Our analysis identified 40 distinct conoid proteins, several of which are essential for parasite lytic growth, as revealed through genetic disruption studies. Comparative analysis of the tubulin-containing complexes sheds light on their functional specialization by microtubule-associated proteins, while the structure of the preconoidal …

This study aims to quantify environmental health impacts and assess risk by understanding the disproportionate burden of infectious diseases, specifically Influenza-like Illness (ILI), across regions with varying socio-economic characteristics. We introduce a novel vulnerability-based approach to better understand the complex relationship between socio-economic factors and ILI burden. We develop a machine-learning-driven framework to assess and map state-level socio-economic vulnerability to ILI in the United States. A vulnerability index was created by integrating 39 diverse socio-economic and health indicators from the latest CENSUS. A Random Forest Regression model then weighed these indicators to quantify each state's vulnerability for the ILI values …

Concordance Of Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization, Whole-Exome Sequencing, And Chromosomal Microarray For Evaluating High-Risk Molecular Features In Meningiomas, Brenndan Crumley, Emilie Russler-Germain, Sonika Dahiya

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumors, classified into three WHO grades based on histologic and/or molecular criteria. cIMPACT-NOW Update 8 underscores the increasing importance of molecular testing in grading and risk stratification, noting that morphologically WHO grade 1 tumors with concurrent 1p and 22q losses demonstrate clinical behavior comparable to WHO grade 2 meningiomas. This study aimed to assess the concordance of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), and whole-exome sequencing (WES) in defining the molecular risk profile of meningiomas.

METHODS: A total of 113 meningiomas were analyzed by WHO grade to assess the …

Immortalization And Characterization Of Schwann Cell Lines Derived From Nf1-Associated Cutaneous Neurofibromas, Hua Li, Angela Hirbe, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant condition in which patients are heterozygous for a disruptive pathogenic variant in the NF1 gene. The most characteristic feature of the condition NF1 is the neurofibroma, a benign, multi-cellular tumor which initiates when a cell of the Schwann cell lineage gains a somatic pathogenic variant of the other NF1 allele. Neurofibromas developing at nerve termini in the skin are termed "cutaneous" neurofibromas (cNFs), while those developing within larger nerves are termed "plexiform." Most patients develop cNFs beginning in late childhood or early adulthood, continuing throughout life at variable rates. Some patients may …

Relationship Among Sleep Disturbance, Stress, And Suicidal Ideation In Clinical High Risk For Psychosis, Heather M Wastler, Daniel Mamah, Et Al. Jan 2026

Relationship Among Sleep Disturbance, Stress, And Suicidal Ideation In Clinical High Risk For Psychosis, Heather M Wastler, Daniel Mamah, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Sleep disturbance is a well-established risk factor for suicide, though few studies to date have examined whether sleep disturbance contributes to suicide risk among individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR). The current study addressed this gap in the literature. We hypothesized that sleep disturbance would have a unique relationship with suicidal ideation/attempts when accounting for other variables in the model. We also hypothesized that the interaction between sleep disturbance/attenuated positive symptoms and sleep disturbance/stress would be related to suicidal ideation/attempts in CHR.

STUDY DESIGN: The current study used data generated by the Accelerating Medicines Partnership® …

Characterization Of The Spatiotemporal Representations Of Visual, Semantic, And Memorability Features In The Human Brain, Yue Wang, Peter Brunner, Jon T. Willie, Runnan Cao, Shuo Wang

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Object recognition requires integrated processing that extends beyond the visual cortex, incorporating semantic and memory-related processes. However, it remains unclear how different attributes, such as visual, semantic, and memorability features, are encoded and interact during perception. Here, we recorded intracranial electroencephalography from 5,143 channels while participants viewed natural object images. We systematically characterized the spatiotemporal patterns of neural encoding for visual, semantic, and memorability attributes and showed that memorability was encoded in a distributed manner, which can be dissociated from visual and semantic coding. While the ventral temporal cortex (VTC) was engaged in encoding all three attributes, the representations were …

Negotiating Disability Stigma In Undergraduate Students With Academic Accommodations, Demetruis Leonard, Pietro A. Sasso

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs

To understand how undergraduate students diagnosed with a disability who receive academic accommodations negotiate stigma, this phenomenological qualitative study was conducted at a midwestern private university using Gibson's (2006) Disability Identity Development Model. Findings from this study of six undergraduates receiving academic accommodations suggest they qualified for reasonable accommodations to guarantee equal access and mitigate the impact of their diagnosed ADHD, depression, and/or anxiety and were granted academic accommodations such as extended time for testing and assignments. These students also used family, friends, and peers to support the navigation of the negative stigma of being perceived as “lazy” or “taking …
