Analysis Of Battery Degradation Effects On Optimized Torque Splitting In Dual-Motor Electric Vehicles, Homer E. Butcher
Analysis Of Battery Degradation Effects On Optimized Torque Splitting In Dual-Motor Electric Vehicles, Homer E. Butcher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Battery electric vehicle performance depends on both powertrain efficiency and battery-health. In dual-motor all-wheel-drive battery electric vehicles, driver-requested torque can be distributed between front and rear electric drive units, creating an opportunity to reduce electrical energy demand through torque allocation. However, lithium-ion battery aging changes the electrical behavior of the energy storage system through capacity fade and internal resistance growth. Capacity fade reduces the usable energy and vehicle range, while resistance growth increases voltage drop, current-related losses, and battery electrical loading. This thesis evaluates how these degradation effects influence the energy consumption, simulated range, and battery electrical behavior of optimized …
Semantic-Weighted Lidar–Camera Slam For Robust Mapping In Vegetation-Rich Environments, David Aigbovboise Akhihiero
Semantic-Weighted Lidar–Camera Slam For Robust Mapping In Vegetation-Rich Environments, David Aigbovboise Akhihiero
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many LiDAR odometry and SLAM methods are lightweight and effective, but they assume that all LiDAR point returns are equally reliable. In practice, this assumption is often violated in vegetation rich or semi transparent environments, where in a single beam footprint, LiDAR beams may intersect multiple scattering surfaces like leaves, branches or glass. These ambiguities in returns produces probabilistic or biased range measurements that violate the assumptions of most geometric registration frameworks and can lead to drift and inconsistency.
To address this challenge, this dissertation proposes a semantic-weighted LiDAR-camera SLAM framework that integrates class dependent weights into a front-end LiDAR …
Dataless Neural Networks For Boolean Satisfiability And Network Optimization, Andrew Evan Gautier
Dataless Neural Networks For Boolean Satisfiability And Network Optimization, Andrew Evan Gautier
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) require searching over a finite solution space subject to constraints, with the goal of satisfying an objective function. They arise in operations research, scheduling, resource allocation, circuit design, and many other fields. Many problems in combinatorial optimization (including satisfiability and network design) are NP-hard. Traditionally, researchers have built approximate solvers that return near- optimal solutions efficiently by developing increasingly sophisticated heuristics and meta- heuristics. Deep learning has provided new opportunities for improving combinatorial solvers by leveraging neural guidance to prune the search space. Traditional neural networks have distinct drawbacks in this context: separate training and …
Essays On Public Policy, Labor Markets, And Regional Economics, Toby Heaney
Essays On Public Policy, Labor Markets, And Regional Economics, Toby Heaney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation consists of three empirical essays examining how economic and political outcomes respond to changes in public policy, information, and local economic conditions. Across the three studies, the dissertation applies empirical methods to questions in political economy, economic forecasting, and regional economics, with particular attention to how the effects of economic shocks and policy changes vary across individuals, markets, and geographic areas.
The first essay examines the role of policy salience in electoral outcomes. Building on rational-choice and median-voter models, it argues that voters may respond disproportionately to policies that impose concentrated and highly visible costs, even when those …

PURPOSE: Same-day surgery (SDS) cancellations have significant implications on patients and hospitals. This study aimed to identify demographic and socioeconomic factors that impact SDS cancellations across a single pediatric health system.
METHODS: A case-control retrospective review captured patients (age < 18) who underwent SDS procedures from July 2022 to August 2024. Patients were included if they underwent any procedure at three operative sites: a tertiary pediatric academic hospital (PAH) and two outpatient surgery centers (OSC). Patients whose SDS was cancelled (n = 2,034) were compared to those whose surgeries proceeded as scheduled (n = 25,573). Patient zip codes were matched to Child Opportunity Index (COI) 2.0 data.
RESULTS: The overall SDS cancellation rate was 7.37 %, with a significantly higher rate observed at the PAH compared to OSC (11.4 % vs 53 %, p < 0.001). Patients with cancelled cases were more likely to identify as Black and have the lowest quintile COI (p < 0.001). Cancelled in preop and no shows were two reasons with the most racial disparities. In a sub-analysis comparing cancelled cases between operating sites, PAH cancelled patients tended to be Black (23.8 % vs 11.7 %, p < 0.001) and have very low COI (20.1 % vs. 10.6 %, p < 0.001).
CONCLUSION: SDS cancellation rates are significantly higher amongst patients who identify as Black and reside in low opportunity neighborhoods. Disparities in cancellation rate are more significant in patients scheduled at the urban PAH compared …

Technology-Driven Approaches For Invasive Species Detection And Management, Kushal Naharki
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Invasive species pose significant ecological, economic, and management challenges globally. Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica), tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), and mile-a-minute (Persicaria perfoliata) are widespread invasive plants across the eastern United States and present persistent challenges, particularly in remote and inaccessible landscapes. Effective management of these species requires an integrated approach that combines early detection, targeted intervention, public engagement, and spatial modeling. This dissertation used emerging technologies to improve invasive species detection, monitoring, and management.
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based platforms equipped with optical sensors were used to establish …

Comparing Unet And Hrnet For Geomorphic Feature Extraction From Digital Terrain Model-Derived Land Surface Parameters, Behnam Solouki
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Automated extraction of geomorphic features from high spatial resolution terrain data is important for environmental monitoring, geohazard assessment, and landscape change analysis. This study compares two convolutional neural network architectures, UNet and High-Resolution Network (HRNet), for semantic segmentation of mine benches and sinkholes from lidar-derived digital terrain models and land surface parameters. Mine benches represent anthropogenic, elongated, stepped landforms associated with historic surface mining, whereas sinkholes are natural, compact depressions common in karst terrain. Three terrain-derived input layers were used: square-root-transformed slope, broad-scale topographic position index, and fine-scale annulus topographic position index. Models were trained using five training sample sizes, …
Conservative Discourse: How It Shapes And Is Shaped By Social Studies Education In West Virginia, Elizabeth Christine Rexroad
Conservative Discourse: How It Shapes And Is Shaped By Social Studies Education In West Virginia, Elizabeth Christine Rexroad
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This narrative inquiry dissertation investigates how conservative Discourse both shapes and is shaped by social studies teacher identity, agency, and the figured world of social studies education in West Virginia. Drawing on the storied lives of three early-career secondary social studies teachers, this study examines how conservative Discourse operates as a structuring force in the daily lives and practices of teachers working in an exceptionally conservative political and social landscape. Using Critical Narrative Analysis (Souto-Manning, 2014) and discourse analysis (Gee, 2014) as analytical frameworks, and figured worlds theory (Holland et al., 1998) as theoretical lens, this study reveals how conservative …

Stakeholder Perceptions Of West Virginia’S Artificial Food Dye Ban In K–12 School Meals: Initial Year Of 2025-2026, Leah Michelle Rogers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
OBJECTIVES: Artificial food dyes (AFD+) are an increasing policy concern in the U.S., particularly in children’s foods. West Virginia’s House Bill 2354, the first statewide AFD+ ban implemented in K-12 schools, restricts seven AFD+ in state-funded meals. Little is known about how AFD+ bans are perceived or implemented. This study examined how the ban functioned within school food systems and the barriers and facilitators experienced by school stakeholders within the initial year of implementation during the 2025-2026 school year.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational mixed-methods study was conducted among implementers, enforcers, and receivers of the policy. A survey tool …

Energy Partition And Heating Mechanisms In Asymmetric Antiparallel Magnetic Reconnection, Aleksandra Abova-Volkova
Energy Partition And Heating Mechanisms In Asymmetric Antiparallel Magnetic Reconnection, Aleksandra Abova-Volkova
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma physics process whereby a change in magnetic field connectivity drives the conversion of magnetic energy into energy of the surrounding plasma, often explosively. One of the many settings where it occurs is at the dayside magnetopause of Earth and other planets, where the magnetic field, number density, and/or temperature in the plasmas on the two sides upstream of the reconnection site are asymmetric. How the incoming magnetic energy gets partitioned into outgoing energies during asymmetric reconnection remains an outstanding question; of special interest is the fraction that gets converted into internal energy of ions …

Racial Resentment, Immigration Attitudes, And The Politics Of State Immigrant Policy Adoption In The United States, Cindy Osei Agyemang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Immigration remains one of the most contested public policy issues in the United States, and racial attitudes have become increasingly important in shaping public opinion and political debate. While prior research has shown a strong relationship between racial resentment and restrictive immigration attitudes, less is known about whether these attitudes extend to legislative discourse and the adoption of immigrant-inclusive state policies. This dissertation addresses that gap by examining the relationship between racial resentment and immigration politics across three levels of analysis: public opinion, legislative discourse, and state policy adoption. Using a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative and qualitative …
Experimental Evaluation Of 100 Ft X 10 Ft Frp Truss Pedestrian Bridge, Ashish Dhital
Experimental Evaluation Of 100 Ft X 10 Ft Frp Truss Pedestrian Bridge, Ashish Dhital
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ABSTRACT
Experimental Evaluation of 100 ft x 10 ft FRP Truss Pedestrian Bridge
Ashish Dhital
FRP truss bridges are now increasingly used in pedestrian bridge applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, better impact performance compared with conventional materials, and ease of assembly. These advantages make FRP systems attractive for accelerated construction, remote-site installation, and environments where steel or reinforced concrete bridges may experience corrosion-related deterioration. Due to insufficient data on both strength and serviceability (i.e deflection, frequency) performances. Full-scale testing of FRP pedestrian bridges of longer spans (50’-100’) is needed to better understand the dynamic behavior, long-term …

BACKGROUND: Steroid hormones influence breast morphology and cellular proliferation and are associated with breast carcinogenesis. However, their associations with mammographic breast density (MBD) are less studied, particularly in premenopausal women. We, therefore, investigated the associations of steroid hormone metabolites with MBD in premenopausal women.
METHODS: Our study included 700 premenopausal women scheduled for screening mammograms. We analyzed 54 steroid hormone metabolites (Metabolon®) and assessed volumetric measures of MBD including volumetric percent density (VPD), dense volume (DV), and non-dense volume (NDV) using Volpara. We investigated associations using linear regression modeling to estimate the covariate-adjusted means of VPD, NDV, and DV, corresponding …

Humans are intensely social creatures. It is therefore not surprising that many psychiatric disorder criteria include social dysfunctions; however, overlapping presentations and diverse, complex etiologies make treating social dysfunctions difficult. Here, we introduce the Cognitive Affective Social Processing and Emotion Regulation (CASPER) model. CASPER integrates research from social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and developmental science to describe how real-world social processing unfolds and is associated with differing psychiatric social cognitive neurophenotypes. Briefly, social processing can be broken down into the following cognitive steps: identifying relevant social cues, attending to related cues, interpreting cues, and adjusting behavior appropriately. Each of these steps …

BACKGROUND: Recent trials have furthered uncertainty regarding the endovascular benefit for medium vessel occlusions (MeVO). Stent retrievers (SR) were employed in the first attempt in most interventional arm participants. We sought to compare outcomes in acute MCA M2 occlusions between frontline aspiration and SR, and to delineate procedural and anatomical covariates associated with differential treatment effect.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a multicenter stroke thrombectomy cohort identified cases of MT for M2 occlusions. Unmatched and propensity score-matched (PSM) cohorts were generated comparing frontline aspiration to standalone and combined SR. The primary outcome was functional independence (mRS 0-2) at 90 days. Recanalization, …

Intersectionality In Discrimination, Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms, And Suicide Ideation: Black Americans In Appalachian Contexts, Jailyn May Wilson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Racial discrimination is recognized as a race-based traumatic stressor that has been associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and suicide ideation (SI). However, there remains a paucity of research investigating the impact of racial and other forms of discrimination on understudied populations, including Black Americans residing in Appalachian regions. The current study used an online self-report survey to examine PTSS as a mediator in the association between perceived discrimination and SI and to examine the moderating effect of the number of identity factors with which one experienced discrimination (i.e., race, gender, region) on the relationship between perceived discrimination and PTSS. …

Abstract
Comparison of Push-Pull Air Curtain to Overhead Downdraft Systems on Aerosol Containment and Distribution in Controlled Environments.
This dissertation looks at the ongoing issue of tiny airborne particles created during medical and dental procedures and evaluates ways to reduce the risk of exposure for healthcare workers and patients to these particles. The first study focuses on the size, how long particles stay in the air, and how far they travel from common medical procedures that create aerosols, showing that tiny particles (less than 5 µm) can stay in the air long enough to escape basic droplet controls. As a …

Surrogate-Based Approaches For Evaluating Post-Harvest Food Safety Interventions In Fresh Produce, Md Shafiul Islam Rion
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pathogenic bacteria are still a threat to human beings worldwide as their presence is often unknown even if they are already present in fresh produces. This in turn resulted in several outbreaks and recalls across the United States. This dissertation investigated the survival of pathogenic bacteria and their potential non-pathogenic surrogates after antimicrobial interventions in different modes of applications on the surface of cantaloupes, butternut squash, and fresh cilantro. In the first study, peroxyacetic acid (PAA) was applied in three separate doses on nalidixic acid resistant Salmonella Typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, Enterococcus faecium, and Listeria innocua inoculated cantaloupe surfaces …

Do The Adaptogenic Mushrooms, Cordyceps Militaris And Hericium Erinaceus, Produce Caffeine-Like Discriminative-Stimulus Effects?, Stephen James Cullinan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed drugs in the United States, but its excessive consumption increases the risk of heart disease, sleep problems, and anxiety. In response to these issues, there has been a rise in efforts to find safer alternatives to caffeine while maintaining similar subjective effects. The adaptogenic mushrooms, cordyceps and lion’s mane, are claimed to have similar energy- and mood-enhancing effects as caffeine; however, there is limited research directly comparing their effects to caffeine. A drug-discrimination paradigm, in which rats were trained to discriminate between caffeine and saline, was used to compare the discriminative-stimulus effects …
Improving The Continuity Of Care For Opioid Use Disorder: Investigating Fentanyl Overdose Outcomes And Pharmacy-Level Buprenorphine Access, Lyn Yuen Choo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Opioid overdose (OD) deaths remain a leading cause of injury-related death in the United States (US) and approximately 76,516 drug OD deaths were predicted in the past year prior to April 2025. While previous research has focused on fatal opioid ODs, less is known about outcomes following non-fatal opioid ODs (NFOO) involving fentanyl. Patients who experienced a fentanyl OD may develop significant morbidity and inpatient mortality due to fentanyl’s high potency, rapid onset of action, and decreased response to naloxone. Research efforts to improve continuity of care for opioid use disorder (OUD) are highly needed to ensure appropriate follow-up care …

Dispositional Mindfulness And Autonomic Reactivity, Thomas Dylan Boyer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
To explain how different facets of mindfulness were associated with task performance in distinctive ways, Lindsay and Creswell (2017) proposed the Monitor and Acceptance Theory (MAT). According to this model, the mindfulness facet of monitoring present state awareness was thought to influence task performance differently than the nonjudgmental acceptance facet of mindfulness, but no studies to date have examined this model with respect to an individual's physiological response to stressful tasks. Because dispositional mindfulness has been associated with both increased and decreased physiological and affective reactions to stress in previous studies, the present study tested whether the Monitoring facet of …

An Assessment Of The Reinforcing And Aversive Properties Of Transition-Related Stimuli, Lillian Louise Skiba-Thayer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Transitions from relatively favorable (rich) to relatively unfavorable (lean) activities have been shown to disrupt behavior. Transition-related disruptions in behavior have been observed across laboratories, species, and procedural arrangements. The most commonly reported disruption in basic research is a pause in the reinforced behavior in the signaled transition from a relatively rich to a relatively lean condition of reinforcement (Perone & Courtney, 1992). The present study assessed the function of the stimuli associated with transitions as either reinforcing, punishing, or neutral across two experiments using eight pigeons as subjects. Experiment 1 tested the function of two stimuli, one correlated with …

Institutions of higher education have historically been designed as engines of innovation and knowledge dissemination in the United States and across the world. Whether this comes by way of short-term credentialing programs at community colleges or through R1 research programs at prestigious universities, all institutions deliver value and knowledge through their academic programs. Over the past decade, colleges across the country have been adding new programs at a frantic pace. While some of these programs seem to provide a clear path forward to gainful employment, some have fallen flat and proven to be bad investments by both the institution and, …
