Sustainable Closed-Loop Supply Chain Network Design Under Uncertainty Using A Fuzzy Multi-Objective Optimization Framework For The Battery Industry, Mahdi Yousefi Nejad Attari, Sahar Rezanejad, Ali Ala, Vladimir Simic, Dragan Pamucar

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

The study presents a sustainable closed-loop supply chain network that integrates financial, environmental, and social objectives within a context of uncertainty. A fuzzy-based modeling approach is introduced to address uncertainty in customer demand, cost parameters, and carbon emission coefficients across the sustainable closed-loop supply chain network. Two metaheuristic methods, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) and multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), are employed to address the problem and are compared against each other. A practical case study of a battery company is employed to validate the framework. The findings indicate that MOPSO surpasses non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II in …

Application Of Healthcare Data Mining Techniques To Planning For Nursing Length Of Stay In Surgical Departments, Mahdi Yousefi Nejad Attari, Akbar Abbaspour Ghadim, Ali Ala, Vladimir Simic, Domonkos Tinka, Dragan Pamucar

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Effective allocation of nurse resources in surgical departments is essential for improving patient care and controlling operating costs in a health society. Length of stay (LOS) is the metric that connects clinical workload to staffing decisions, yet ward-level forecasting and its translation into daily nursing schedules remain limited. This study presents a hybrid, data-driven decision-support system that combines machine-learning LOS prediction with Reinforcement Learning (RL) for the surgical ward. A dataset of 137,145 records is used to evaluate Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, Decision Tree, and a Multi-layer Perceptron. Random Forest achieved the most accurate and stable performance (R² = 0.84; …

Spatial ability has been identified as an essential cognitive ability for educational performance broadly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Further, children with higher levels of this ability are more likely to choose STEM educational pathways. It is theorised that a benefit of spatial ability lies in affording young people further capacity to think and reason effectively in diverse problem-solving contexts, which translates into desirable educational outcomes. However, substantial evidence has identified a gender gap favouring boys particularly in the mental rotation spatial factor, and there is less evidence for any similar gender gaps for other spatial factors, …

Snif: Explainability-Driven Feature Selection Through State-Of-The-Art Shap–Nca Intersection Framework For Malware Detection, Sadia Nazim, Syed Shujaa Hussain, Bilal Yousuf, Jawahir Che Mustapha

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Modern malware detection rely on Deep neural networks to achieve high detection performance by leveraging a large feature space. However, these models often suffer from high dimensionality, limited interpretability, and reduced reliability due to redundant features. As a result, they obscure the true contribution of features to the rationale for the prediction. To address these challenges, this study proposes an explainability-aware feature pruning technique to improve the performance and efficiency of deep neural networks. The key focus of this study is the development of the novel SHAP–NCA Intersection Framework (SNIF), which integrates explainability with feature selection for efficient and trustworthy …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

This paper attempts to answer questions regarding the link between engineering success and spatial skills through three themes. The previous research of the authors in examining the questions surrounding each theme is the focus of this paper; we acknowledge that others around the world may have conducted similar research, but the specific findings of the authors are the main focus of this paper. In the first theme, we examine data from several author-led studies where positive correlations have been found between spatial skill levels and proficiency in tasks that are a part of what it means to be an engineer. …

Explainability In Action: A Metric-Driven Assessment Of Local Explanations For Healthcare Tabular Models, M. Atif Qureshi, Abdul Aziz Noor, Awais Manzoor, Muhammad Deedahwar Mazhar Qureshi, Arjumand Younus, Wael Rashwan

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Explainable AI (XAI) is increasingly used in clinical machine learning, yet quantitative evaluation of explanation quality is often reported inconsistently across methods and datasets. We present a reproducible, metric-driven framework for evaluating XAI methods on healthcare tabular data. The framework consolidates six established, family-specific metrics, fidelity, simplicity, consistency, robustness, precision, and coverage, into explicit equations; pairs them with a pre-specified focal-model protocol; and releases open-source code with a method-metric applicability map. We evaluate LIME, SHAP, Anchors, EBM, and TabNet across four public healthcare tabular datasets. Post-hoc explainers are applied to a single selected Random Forest focal predictor to control model-induced …

From Platelets To Particles: Optimizing Extracellular Vesicle Isolation In A National Blood Centre, Y. Chintala, A. Waters, F. Mcgrath, A. Lorusso, C. Wynne, S. Meaney

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Background and Objectives: Platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (PEVs) are submicron, membrane-bound particles released upon platelet activation, with a recognized role in haemostasis, inflammation and immunoregulation. PEVs remain insufficiently characterized in blood products. This study compared four isolation methods to evaluate their impact on PEV yield, purity and characteristics, aiming to identify a practical approach for transfusion service workflows. Materials and Methods: PEVs were isolated from expired single-donor aphaeresis platelet concentrates (n = 12) using methods based on different isolation principles: ultracentrifugation (UC), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), mixed size/charge separation (hybrid) and an affinity-based spin column method (affinity). Size, number and biochemical …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Handwritten Urdu text recognition remains a very challenging problem due to the cursive and complex nature of the Nastaliq script. Each writer has a unique style, and there is a severe lack of large, well-labeled datasets. These challenges make Urdu text recognition much harder than for many other languages. Here we propose a novel and effective approach for handwritten Urdu word recognition that addresses both data scarcity and feature complexity. We utilized conditional diffusion models to generate synthetic handwritten Urdu word images. These models produce realistic word samples covering a wide range of variations, such as stroke thickness, curves, and …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Forensic entomology is valuable in legal investigations for estimating the minimum post-mortem interval (minPMI) by insect species and their lifecycles on decomposing remains. While forensic entomology is well established in central-northern Europe and the UK, it has been rarely practiced in Ireland due to a lack of demand and practical expertise. Office of the State Pathologist (OSP) provides the national forensic pathology service; however specialised forensic entomology services are outsourced and instructed on a case-by-case basis. A collaboration was established between the OSP, Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) and University of Strathclyde over the past two years. This collaboration enabled …

Sustainable Development And Faith, Tony Kealy Jan 2026

Sustainable Development And Faith, Tony Kealy

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

The contribution of faith-based input to the broader idea of sustainable development has not been widely acknowledged in the traditional sense; however, recent global events suggest it may warrant further exploration. This qualitative study examines how faith-based activities, such as missionary work, have historically and can continue to contribute significantly to the environmental, economic, and human/social aspects of organizational decision-making. The focus is on the Catholic faith, specifically the role played by the Irish-based Medical Missionaries of Mary religious congregation in the mid-to-late twentieth century. An initial literature review was conducted to gather information from various sources to define sustainable …
