Investigating The Immunostimulatory Potential Of Dsrna-Silk Nanoparticle Complexes In Melanoma, Samuel J. Peters
Investigating The Immunostimulatory Potential Of Dsrna-Silk Nanoparticle Complexes In Melanoma, Samuel J. Peters
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The rate of resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment in metastatic melanoma is quite high, with an overall rate of 70%. Melanoma achieves these high rates of resistance by suppressing the immune response in the tumour microenvironment (TME), making them immunologically “cold”. The type 1 interferon response could be leveraged to initiate immune responses in melanoma, making their “cold” TMEs “warm” again. Double-stranded ribonucleic acids (dsRNAs) are potent activators of an innate immune response; however, they are susceptible to degradation by nucleases present in the body and need a carrier. Silk nanoparticles (SNPs) are an ideal drug-delivery platform as they …
“My Voice Is Trauma, My Voice Is Healing:” A Feminist, Trauma-Informed Embodied Study On The Impact Of Gender-Based Violence In Classical Music Communities, Sarah Pearson
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This Social Work doctoral dissertation explores the impact of gender-based violence (GBV) in classical music communities on survivor-artists. This is an intersectional feminist, trauma-informed, embodied study that draws on these three theoretical concepts to conceive of classical music as an institution of both colonial patriarchal power and a site of spirituality and meaning-making. The issue of systemic GBV in the performing arts has been a focus of headline news and sensational celebrity stories in the last decade following the MeToo hashtag and is slowly gaining some attention in academic research.
For this qualitative study, the sample consisted of 14 participants …
A Constructivist Grounded Study: At The Intersection Of Religion And Intimate Partner Violence In The Context Of An Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Community, Lauren Kalvari
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This constructivist grounded theory study, informed by a critical intersectional lens and guided by symbolic interactionist theory, explored how Ultra-Orthodox Jewish women experience and navigate intimate partner violence (IPV) within their religious and community contexts. Ten participants, recruited through purposive and theoretical sampling, were separated or divorced from abusive partners for at least eight months and had engaged in psychotherapy, allowing for retrospective meaning-making. Each participant completed one to three in-depth interviews on IPV, community responses, spiritual conflict, and recovery. Data collection and analysis were conducted concurrently using Charmaz’s iterative constructivist grounded theory approach, which included initial, focused, and theoretical …
Investigation Of Mercury Bioaccessibility In Subsistence Fishes From The Canadian Subarctic, Kiran Mateo Sharma Mr
Investigation Of Mercury Bioaccessibility In Subsistence Fishes From The Canadian Subarctic, Kiran Mateo Sharma Mr
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Fish consumption is the primary pathway for human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg), a global contaminant of concern known to cause adverse health effects. Fort Albany First Nation, a remote Indigenous community in northern Ontario that relies on fish for both subsistence and cultural practices, has expressed concern regarding the safety of local fish consumption. Community members and leaders have communicated several priorities for scientific research that are the foundation of this thesis. Specifically, consumers of wild-caught fish have asked how traditional cooking methods may affect mercury concentrations in fish, and how mercury concentrations in little-studied organs, such as liver and …
Exploring Religious-Spiritual Struggles Among Muslim Immigrants In The Canadian Context, Ayse Erenay
Exploring Religious-Spiritual Struggles Among Muslim Immigrants In The Canadian Context, Ayse Erenay
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Migration to a new culture and adaptation to a different lifestyle may cause emotional and psychological stress. In some cases, immigrants may experience religious and/or spiritual (R/S) struggles due to challenges to their beliefs and practices in the country they have immigrated to. Based on Pargament (2007, 2013)’s R/S struggle framework, these struggles may include questions about the ultimate meaning of life, one’s relationship with God, or doubt about one’s belonging within a religious or spiritual community. Muslim immigrants face unique struggles since Islamic teachings require Muslims to visibly practice their faith and reflect on God’s presence as a central …
The Power Of Letting Go: The Role Of Goal Adjustment Capacities Across Future And Daily Perspectives Of Chronic Illness, Alexandra Dagher, Meaghan Barlow
The Power Of Letting Go: The Role Of Goal Adjustment Capacities Across Future And Daily Perspectives Of Chronic Illness, Alexandra Dagher, Meaghan Barlow
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Goal adjustment capacities are self-regulatory processes that protect psychological well-being by allowing individuals to disengage from unattainable goals and reengage in new attainable ones. Although research has shown that these capacities are beneficial in the context of chronic illness, little is known about how their effectiveness may differ across various aspects of the chronic illness experience. The present research consisted of two distinct yet complementary studies examining the role of goal adjustment capacities in two chronic illness contexts. Study 1 (N = 149) prompted participants to imagine the future progression of a chronic illness, whereas Study 2 (N …
Permafrost Microtopography And Active Layer Hydrology In The Western Canadian Arctic, Tobias L. Leonhard
Permafrost Microtopography And Active Layer Hydrology In The Western Canadian Arctic, Tobias L. Leonhard
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The growing interest in Arctic regions will likely increase the use of nuclear energy in the Arctic. While this energy source has a high potential to improve economic opportunities in the Arctic, it also increases the release of radioactive material (radionuclides). Radionuclides are already found in the Arctic and are traced back to natural as well as anthropogenic sources. Water is one of the dominant transport vectors for solutes such as radionuclides or other contaminants. Therefore, improving our understanding of Arctic hydrology is important for assessing future environmental risks such as the release of radionuclides. Topographic and microtopographic features are …
The Effects Of Appearance Change And Partial Face Visibility On Eyewitness Identification, Raina-Lynn A. Brock M.A., Judy Eaton Ph.D.
The Effects Of Appearance Change And Partial Face Visibility On Eyewitness Identification, Raina-Lynn A. Brock M.A., Judy Eaton Ph.D.
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
There is limited research examining the possibility of a temporary appearance change (e.g. a black eye) between exposure to a perpetrator at the time of a crime and later identification attempts by eyewitnesses. Across two experimental studies, this research examines how eyewitness identification decisions are impacted by an appearance change and how lineup procedures can influence eyewitness accuracy. Study 1 examined how a transient facial feature, a black eye, affects the accuracy of eyewitnesses’ identification decisions, while manipulating the severity of the black eye (prominent bruising, faded bruising, no bruising). Participants (N=403) were exposed to a 43-second mock crime video …
Timing, Targets, And Teaching: How Employee Help-Seeking Influences Downward Knowledge Sharing, Nicholle E. Kovach
Timing, Targets, And Teaching: How Employee Help-Seeking Influences Downward Knowledge Sharing, Nicholle E. Kovach
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Knowledge sharing between managers and employees is critical for employee development and organizational performance. However, managers differ in whether they share knowledge, and in the type of knowledge shared. While solution-oriented knowledge offers immediate answers to improve short-term performance, process-oriented knowledge promotes long-term learning and employee development. The purpose of my dissertation is to investigate factors that influence managers’ knowledge-sharing decisions.
I conduct two studies to investigate my predictions. In Study 1, I examine how the timing of employee help-seeking requests, the source of performance targets and employee historical performance influence the type and quality of managers’ knowledge-sharing responses. Drawing …
Challenging Agency Deregulation, Todd S. Aagaard
Challenging Agency Deregulation, Todd S. Aagaard
Faculty Publications
The administrative state is experiencing two seismic shifts. First, in recent years, the Supreme Court has issued a series of decisions that significantly curtailed the powers of administrative agencies. Second, President Donald Trump is using administrative agencies to aggressively deregulate in his second term. The conventional wisdom is that the Supreme Court’s recent precedent will facilitate the Trump Administration’s deregulatory agenda.
This Article argues the opposite. Instead of promoting agency deregulation, recent Supreme Court precedent restraining agency authority provides a potentially powerful basis for challenging agency deregulation as administrative overreach. Time and time again, the Court has taken agencies to …
Fluorescent Protein Imaging Approaches Uncover Dynamic Subcellular Distribution Of Core Clock Proteins In Neurospora Crassa, Ziyan Wang
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Circadian clocks are endogenous self-sustained timekeeping systems that allow organisms to anticipate and adapt to daily environmental cycles. Found in diverse forms of life, these molecular clocks regulate the expression of ~ 40% of the genome in animals, fungi, and plants. In animals and fungi, circadian oscillators are built on transcription-translation feedback loops (TTFLs), in which positive regulators drive the expression of negative regulators which, once synthesized and imported into the nucleus, inhibit their own activators. This precisely regulated negative feedback incorporates multiple steps of delays that are essential for generating ~24-hour rhythms. Through these mechanisms, circadian clocks temporally coordinate …
High Temperature Creep Deformation Mechanism Of Fe28.2ni18.8mn32.9al14.1cr6 High Entropy Alloy And Its Modified Alloys, Edwin S. Jiang, I. Baker
High Temperature Creep Deformation Mechanism Of Fe28.2ni18.8mn32.9al14.1cr6 High Entropy Alloy And Its Modified Alloys, Edwin S. Jiang, I. Baker
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Fe28.2Ni18.8Mn32.9Al14.1Cr6 eutectic high entropy alloy exhibits a good combination of room-temperature and high temperature properties, including tensile strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance, making it a promising candidate for structural applications in extreme environments. However, the creep deformation behavior of this alloy— and high-entropy alloys (HEAs) in general—remains insufficiently understood. This dissertation systematically investigates the high-temperature creep deformation mechanisms of Fe28.2Ni18.8Mn32.9Al14.1Cr6 and its derivatives.
Creep mechanisms and associated microstructural changes were examined across a wide range of strain rates using strain-rate jump and constant-stress tests. Two dominant regimes were identified: dislocation glide/solute-drag at low strain rates, and dislocation climb at high …
Climate And Environmental Controls On Forest Soil Organic Matter Cycling, Genevieve Goebel
Climate And Environmental Controls On Forest Soil Organic Matter Cycling, Genevieve Goebel
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Climate change factors act on the soil environment in complex ways, known to disturb soil organic carbon (C). Rising global temperatures and alterations to regional precipitation and nitrogen deposition regimes may contribute to the intensification of global change by accelerating the rate of biological decomposition and CO2 efflux to the atmosphere. The magnitude and endurance of the disturbance to soil organic C across landscapes and throughout time that climate change factors may pose to soil C cycling are not comprehensively understood. These knowledge gaps in our field make it challenging to anticipate how soil environments and the vast ecosystems that …
Genomic Determinants Of Appetite Regulation And Their Role In Obesity Risk, Timothy J. Renier
Genomic Determinants Of Appetite Regulation And Their Role In Obesity Risk, Timothy J. Renier
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Over 40% of US adults and 20% of children live with obesity. It is related to increased risks of diseases including type II diabetes and cancer, is a source of harmful stigma, and impairs child development. Appetitive traits describing patterns of food approach and avoidance behaviors may serve as windows into the underlying pathophysiology of obesity. As both obesity and appetitive traits are heritable, common genetic drivers of obesity may lead to phenotypic obesity through appetitive traits as a disease mechanism. Additionally, GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have been shown to exert their profound clinical effects in part by modulating appetite. …
Engineering Disorder, Defects, And Electrical Transport For High-Performance Thermoelectric Fe2val Heusler Alloys, James Russell Taylor Iv
Engineering Disorder, Defects, And Electrical Transport For High-Performance Thermoelectric Fe2val Heusler Alloys, James Russell Taylor Iv
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Fe2VAl is a promising low-temperature thermoelectric material for waste-heat energy conversion because it is easily processed and comprised of earth-abundant, non-toxic, and low-cost elements. However, viability for applications faces two major challenges: high thermal conductivity and low p-type Seebeck coefficients. This primarily experimental work aims to address these issues through extrinsic and self-doping, point-defect and disorder generation through thermal and electrical processing, disordered and metastable phase composition quantification, and comparison of transport measurements to modeled electronic features.
An accessible phase quantification method was developed for bulk Fe2VAl using laboratory X-ray diffraction equipment to compare thermoelectric properties …
The Serotonin 1b Receptor In Psilocybin’S Therapeutic-Like Mechanisms: From Behavior To Network Reorganization, Sixtine Fleury
The Serotonin 1b Receptor In Psilocybin’S Therapeutic-Like Mechanisms: From Behavior To Network Reorganization, Sixtine Fleury
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Mood disorders represent a substantial and growing global health crisis, with ~10 million adults in the US meeting criteria for a major depressive disorder (MDD). Current first-line treatments such as SSRIs require long-term daily administration and fail a significant proportion of patients, driving renewed interest in rapid-acting alternatives. Psilocybin, a serotonergic psychedelic, shows growing clinical evidence of efficacy in treating depressive and anxiety disorders, often producing therapeutic effects persisting weeks to months following a single dose. Yet, the neural mechanisms underlying these enduring effects remain poorly understood and have been largely attributed to the serotonin 2A receptor (5-HT2AR) based on …
Early-Time/High-Frequency Electromagnetic Induction Sensing For Minimal-Metal And None-Metallic Subsurface Targets, Michele Louise Maxson
Early-Time/High-Frequency Electromagnetic Induction Sensing For Minimal-Metal And None-Metallic Subsurface Targets, Michele Louise Maxson
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Conventional electromagnetic induction (EMI) systems operate within the quasi-static regime, where measurements are dominated by conduction currents and are primarily sensitive to highly conductive targets and bulk soil properties. As a result, these systems exhibit limited sensitivity to low-conductivity and layered media, such as permafrost, composite materials, and minimum-metal landmines, where diagnostically relevant information resides in early-time/high-frequency electromagnetic responses, generally above 100 kHz. This limitation reflects a mismatch between conventional EMI system design and the underlying target physics, restricting the ability of standard EMI approaches to resolve fine-scale non-metallic subsurface structure.
In this thesis, I investigate early-time/high-frequency sensitivity as a …
Cross-Temporal Statistical Approaches For Evaluating Predictor-Outcome Relationships, Jeff Joseph
Cross-Temporal Statistical Approaches For Evaluating Predictor-Outcome Relationships, Jeff Joseph
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Central auditory function is linked with cognitive deficits, but few research projects use existing statistical approaches or develop new ones to forecast cognitive deficits using the results of central auditory tests. To address this limitation, we use a series of statistical learning frameworks for predicting a child’s cognitive abilities based on his/her central auditory performances and demographic factors. Two key challenges exist. First, children may start the study at a time when they are unable to perform the central auditory tests or cognitive tests. Second, cognitive performance is age-dependent, particularly in the early formative years of childhood and adolescence. To …
Governing Agroecological Transitions: Landscape Legacies, Participation, And Socioecological Change In The Northeastern United States, Kristen Jovanelly
Governing Agroecological Transitions: Landscape Legacies, Participation, And Socioecological Change In The Northeastern United States, Kristen Jovanelly
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Agroecological transitions are often presented as purposeful shifts toward more resilient, equitable, and ecologically sustainable landscapes. In practice, these transitions unfold through histories, ecological feedback, institutional arrangements, and contested forms of participation. This dissertation examines how these forces shape what agroecological transitions become, for whom, and with what socioecological consequences across urban and working landscapes in the northeastern United States.
Drawing on historical and critical analysis, ecological modeling, greenhouse experimentation, ethnographic fieldwork, and institutional analysis, I trace transition through urban forests, community-garden seed banks and soils, temperate agroforestry systems, and a participatory tree nursery. Analyses of urban greening and agroforestry …
From Meaning To Memory: Assessing The Capacity And Representational Structure Of Visual Working Memory With Meaningful Stimuli, Yong Hoon Chung
From Meaning To Memory: Assessing The Capacity And Representational Structure Of Visual Working Memory With Meaningful Stimuli, Yong Hoon Chung
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Visual working memory is thought to be strictly limited. Yet we remember meaningful, real-world objects better than abstract stimuli. Here I show that this advantage arises from the semantic structure of meaningful objects, not their perceptual features alone, and that it extends even to memory for associated features such as color. In the brain, meaningful objects elicit greater and more distributed delay activity, consistent with the recruitment of higher-level neural processes during maintenance. I propose that semantic knowledge adds representational dimensions that make items more distinctive, and that these dimensions are organized hierarchically with lower-level visual features. These findings recast …
Reforming Revocation By Physical Act, Barry Cushman
Reforming Revocation By Physical Act, Barry Cushman
Journal Articles
From the Introduction
In a previous article, I documented the various problems that are created by the law’s recognition of the power of a testator to revoke his will in whole or in part by physical act. That article canvassed five different areas of law in which such difficulties arise: ineffective attempts at revocation; the presumption of revocation; partial revocation by physical act; dependent relative revocation; and revival. In this Article, I first explore the asymmetries within the law of wills created by the persistence of revocation by physical act. I then offer some reflections on possibilities for reform.
